bruno pronsato returns with his first new artist album in 6 years. entitled us drag, it’s the follow-up to 2011’s critically acclaimed lovers do— lauded by pitchfork as a “striking and massive statement,” and decorated with a 4.5/5 rating by resident advisor. the new record, which finds the ex-punk rock drummer exploring dense, interlocking rhythms and unorthodox tuning systems, was recorded in berlin during the second half of 2016, and features a collaboration with liars’ frontman angus andrew. after the vast, complex arrangements of his previous albums, the 9 recordings on us drag are relatively more upfront and direct, with a particular focus on bells, tuned percussion and the sequential circuits six-trak synthesizer (used to create many of the album’s synth parts). pronsato’s ongoing collaboration with yonatan levi continues, with the israeli bassist appearing on the album’s second track

we’re glad to welcome back aun to cyclic law for their latest opus! aun’s music as always suggested forays into other dimensions, be it to imaginary worlds, industrial wastelands, through space and time, or via mind altered states. from the ominous dystopian artwork, of a city being drained of its energy by some mysterious black hole, to the first notes of the title track “fiat lux” we are once again transported on aun’s otherworldly travelling path. ever since the space industrial and power electronics of aun’s previous cyclic law cult release “black pyramid”, the world has become even more sinister, but in contrast, “fiat lux” exudes even more of aun’s melancholic hopefulness. the disintegrating chords and densely textured waves, anchored by a left field industrial pulse, invoke occult drug enhanced, future psychedelia. created in part in their montreal studio, these tracks were extensively performed live, prior to recording, and refined while on tour breaks in montpellier, barcelona and tokyo. the energy of these cities is definitely at work in these recordings, which also features a french connection of experimental heavy hitters: witxes, frédéric d. oberland and philippe petit have helped round out dumais and leblanc’ arsenal. fiat lux: let there be light, from light will come darkness.

creme de hassan is a collaborative effort and project of paul labrecque (head of wantastiquet, sunburned hand of the man) and ghazi barakat (pharoah chromium. this is the second release for inversions, and the first full length album. pr is currently underway courtesy of the berlin-based dense promotion. so far the record has been played on the digital radio stations bytefm, eldoradio and ondefurlane. it has been played on the independent music podcast, and reviewed in the online magazine rockerilla.

to celebrate the rebirth 100th release the label owner shield and his right arm robytek get in the studio with salvatore principato (sal p.) and dennis young, known as the vocalist and marimba/percussionist of the seminal early 80s nyc band liquid liquid. the experimental sounding band emerged from new york city s vibrant downtown scene in 1981, developing their own unique sound, a fusion of irresistible basslines, junkyard percussion and urgent, free-flowing lyrics.

arriving as the first release of the new sublabel series figure jams, this split ep by fabrizio lapiana and amotik serves not only as a crafty cut in its own right but also showcases a particular type of package, which figure will be facilitating from now on. the a-side is taken up by a pair of lapiana’s irresistably dense grooves that unmistakebly tread in the footsteps of his homeland’s highly emotional techno, unafraid of big melodies but also injecting just the right amount of twisted acid to set the floor ablaze. this sense of grandeur and space is also reflected in the work of fast-rising producer amotik. painting with his very own colours as an equally epic scenery, its bleak and post-apocalyptic landscape dominated by broken industrial beats and hypnotically swirling synths.

loco dices desolat label welcomes uk artist waff for its next ep, a meaty four tracker by the name of hanzz sup. in recent times, waff has really established himself as one of the beacons of main room house and techno around the world. from standout sets at key ibiza clubs to gigs at fabric, london via big underground hits on labels like drumcode, cocoon and hot creations, he is a real man of the moment. the title track opens the ep in fine style with hulking great big kicks reverberating down low as wonky tones and scattered percussion add more heat. barreling along and taking no prisoners, it is a hugely physical drum track with spoken word mutterings piling on the pressure. making just as big an impression but in less direct ways, the shuffling and bubbling karimba is a skittish, busy affair with tribal drums and vocal chants all layered up into something that is sure to become anthemic in ibiza this summer. on the flip side hypnotised works on getting into your brain with tight, scurrying drum and percussive patterns that never let up. its a dense, busy arrangement that makes for a high octane ride. last of all inception takes on more of a house feel, with well swung, low slung drums bringing the groove as hammering hits and frosty synth lines keep busy up top. this is house and techno that makes a big impact from one of the most on point producers out there right now.

ltd repress , for our final record of the year, we turn to glasgow’s man of the year - denis sulta. like a good chunk of the numbers family, he has earnt his stripes working at the coalface of techno aka rubadub. he has crafted two excellent twelves for our bare-chested cousins at dixon avenue basement jams and is beginning to carve himself out a reputation as a dj of some repute, expertly blending in the bangers with sulta-certified weirdness. denis is part of a new wave of glaswegian artists who are doing amazing things and whose music is continuously exciting us. ‘it’s only real’ created by sulta during a burst of inspiration one sunday, takes us back to a time when techno was intricately melodic but still kicked hard in the club. made with only the purest of intentions and a dedication to the art of moving heads and feet. support from four tet, john talabot, joy orbison, kowton and loads more quality djs.

a work 12 months in the making, adam beyer continues his exciting series of collaborative eps, teaming up with heavy-hitters pig&dan for an multi-faceted four-tracker. chances are up if you spied adam beyer in an airport departure lounge over the past 12 months, he d have his head buried in his laptop, immersed in creating sound sketches. a long-time fan of collaborations, the drumcode chief has been on an inspiring streak of form lately, teaming up with the likes of mark reeve, dense & pika and now pig&dan. the results have been compelling, to say the least. in trademark perfectionist beyer style, the title track capsule - a shimmering slice of techno - involved -around 15 different versions- the track rigorously road tested by the swede and featured in episodes of drumcode radio to test dancefloor reactions, before finally getting the sign off.

swiss duo me & her join the hottrax roster with a robust release featuring british duo dense & pika and detroit’s dj bone on remix duties. with recent appearances on deeperfect, natura viva and clarisse records, the rising duo has quickly cemented a reputation as ones to watch since making their production debut back in 2014. joining them on the release is dense & pika, who have been taking the world by storm whilst releasing on leading labels such as adam beyer’s drumcode, scuba’s hotflush, not to mention renowned uk imprint hypercolour. meanwhile, dj bone needs little introduction having paved the way for quality techno for over two decades including running his renowned subject detroit imprint. sturdy kicks and intricate effects drive ‘wild rage’ forward before introducing metallic snares and animated melodies. on the other hand, ‘thunderstruck’ is a dusky production composed of heady stabs and echoing elements that together generate a compelling groove. dense & pika’s shuffling remix of ‘wild rage’ shines a spotlight on a tantalizing synth as eerie nuances operate throughout, before dj bone concludes the package with a trippy and percussive reinterpretation of his own.

zweitwerk des world music trios um folk-koryphäe james yorkston! das zweite album von yorkston/thorne/khan wird anfang april auf domino veröffentlicht. es folgt dem von kritikern gefeierten banddebüt “everything sacred” von 2016 und präsentiert einen zusammenspiel verschiedener strömungen wie dem nordindischen sarangi, jazz-gefärbtem bass mit reminiszenzen an danny thompson und einer akustik gitarre, die den folk- & blues-koryphäen elizabeth cotton, dick gaughan und mississippi john hurt tribut zollt – und drei sehr unterschiedlichen vokalisten: james yorkston (east neuk of fife), jon thorne (isle of wight) und suhail yusuf khan (neu delhi). “neuk wight delhi all-stars” ist eine sammlung von traditionellen indischen und britischen folksongs, wunderschönen originalen und eigenwilligen coverversionen, die nicht nur klassische musik aus indien und jazz zusammenbringt, es zitiert ebenfalls reggae, irischen dudelsack und den einfluss des madagassischen gitarristen d’gary. dark entries presents all four mixes of transdance by night moves as a tribute dedicated to the lives lost in the oakland ghost ship fire on december 2, 2016. night moves was the brainchild of michael guihen, from south london. inspired by seeing tubeway army perform on top of the pops in 1979 he placed an ad to form a synth-based band in the nme. in november 1980 he was introduced to denis haines, formerly gary numans keyboardist on the telekon album. denis and michael worked closely together, writing a number of backing tracks. one of these was the farewell song from gary numan to his band tubeway army, love needs no disguise. in exchange for this backing track, denis gave michael the studio time needed to develop transdance

the second instalment of the enigmatic olympos series comes in the form of apollo, recognised as the god of music, art, medicine and plague amongst other traits. the a side gets underway with the hypnotic cutter (a1) (ena), that intersects its atmospheric layers and solid bassline to a trippy effect while a2 s (a2) (duo) consists of syncopated percussive elements swathed in blissful pads and acidic segments. flipside s (b1(tria) returns to denser and more psychedelic waters that leads nicely to the breezy and gloaming vibes of (b2) tessera). all in all, a proper immersive head trip. ltd hand stamped.

‘mind fiction’, kaczor s first release, comes with organic artwork such as a growing plant cover and simple yet sleek thai design inspired by a recent tour to southeast asia. the ep serves as a perfect example for kaczor s own artistic vision: moody textures and mellower grooves meeting his trademark raw and gritty, forceful attack-laden release of rolling drums, bass and percussion, pointing to kaczor s own roots in the more stormy outbacks of broken beats or uk bass. first track ‘balance’ starts off with a softer, textured soundscape, nicely balancing melancholy synth waves and drum rattles into an atmospheric opener with a slowly oncoming and unfurling, melodic twist. the title track ‘mind fiction’ more closely follows kaczors very own signature formula of a simple and driving bassline followed by an evocative build-up rushing into an emotional, cathartic breakdown. ‘asta’ might be kazcor s most daring and trippy production to date: an intense mixture between hypnotic, hard hitting thumps and thunderous rolling drums taking the listener into the electrifying whirl of a night-time storm, where the tense and dense, humid atmosphere culminates in a monsoon-like rainfall of spiralling reverb – marking a fitting crescendo for this impressive debut on kaczor s now very own sonic ground.
