it was only a matter of time. two genre-defining artists together ... pop music and dance musics most famous arbiters of taste, collaborating at last. dj hells >u can dance< is an interpretation of an unreleased bryan ferry song, but its one that reflects a perfect melding of two distinct personalities, a record that sounds as if the voice and music were made for each other.
hell, of course, has been riding high on the success of >teufelswerk<, his masterpiece of a double album, a journey replete with fruitful experiments and club bombs. one that has yielded both massive hits and not a tiny bit of controversy along the way. ferry, meanwhile, has been as busy as ever—recording a new album, performing in places as far afield as siberia, opening up the cannes film festival ... basically just being bryan ferry.
and now here they are together ... it all started in 2006 when hell dropped in to meet ferry at his west london studio. at first they discussed hell remixing an old roxy music track, and then it turned into something else - something new (u can dance).
they had similar impressions of one another — hell: >i was impressed by his aura and his look.<, ferry: >he impressed us with his sophistication and charm.< fast forward a few years later, and hell is hard at work on teufelswerk and putting the finishing touches on the aforementioned song titled >u can dance<, a serpentine moroder-esque disco burner. with the help of old friend peter kruder, of kruder and dorfmeister fame, hell fashioned the song into a smoldering nine-minute highlight of the double disc set, in which ferry turns in a typically assured vocal performance.
ferry may seem like an unexpected fan of dance, but hes been going to clubs since he was a teenager, and in his lengthy career hes worked with legends such as nile rodgers of chic and david williams from michael jacksons band. >its always a pleasure to work with people from that genre, who follow a singular groove.<
the single follows in the wake of hells >the dj feat. p. diddy< which has won over floors and critics alike with its nearly 30-minute radio slave remix and fine work from the likes of deetron, jay haze and others. on >u can dance< hell and ferry have similarly pulled out all the stops for the remixes, gathering up work from the grammy-nominated producer carl craig, dfa mainstay tim goldsworthy and pop electro superstars simian mobile disco.

back together once again, the production powerhouse that is lake & lys return to rising music for another piece of peak time, dancefloor madness. humanica picks up where la tromba left off, a huge track featuring a harmonica played by dirty vegas steve smith, backed up by driving synths, heavy percussive drums and the trademark sawtooth lake bass line. sloane, on the other hand, is a classic old skool groover, chords stabs reminiscent of classic house records push the track, while vintage drum machines are perfectly juxtaposed next to modern pad sounds, all combining to send the dancefloor in to old skool ecstasy.

rotterdams legendary discohouse producer mark du mosch presents his debut release for cyber dance records in the shape of the cold sweat ep. consisting of five outstanding tracks that take us from the near italo disco bliss of now or never to the classic dutch lo fi electro sounds of revenger, on to the searing intensity of the system and the title track then rounded off beautifully with the deep chi house vibes of satical, this is not an ep to be missed. already getting rotation plays on intergalactic fm and called by moustache label impresario david vunk one of the best techno records of the year, we cant speak highly enough of this totally rocking record.

tonbaumeister’s love for electronic music roots deep in the late eighties when he got his first computer, a commodore c-64, and when he instantly fell for the distinctive sounds of its sid chip. always driven by this passion he since then devoted himself to producing electronic music on various computing platforms and with multiple different programs to discover and soon constantly reinvent his own style. growing up in hessen, in the very heart of germany, he was deeply influenced by the endlessly evolving styles of house music and techno, which shaped the face of the vibrant club culture in cities like frankfurt and kassel. although tonbaumeister’s style might prematurely be declared as house music, the diversity of his productions makes it almost impossible to put them in a box and label them. his energetic tracks range from straight house to tech house to almost dark technoid characteristics, but suddenly one finds oneself surpr ised by the aforementioned sounds of late eighties computer games embedded in a psychedelic landscape with rough sawtoothy baselines. as hard as it is to pin down his production style, it is even harder to label his dj sets, which, as well as his productions, constantly evolve and morph while mirroring all of tonbaumeister’s influences. since 1999 he developed a passion for djing and he has had the chance to transport his enthusiasm into a number of clubs, infecting many clubbers with his verve. at the moment he is about to launch his own label subclinical

the title track, lost in shibuya, is perhaps our favorite track from the album. its a very evocative track, a 7 minute journey that revolves around a killer bassline, that captures the trancey techno vibe that made some of the most glorious moments of nineties techno. on the flip side, we asked one of our favorite producers to deliver a remix. his name is quarion and as part of drumpoet community, he is responsible for some of the best deep house sounds of the past years, and is one of the leaders of the neo deep house movement. quarion blessed us with a tribute to mood ii swing that is his dub infected killer usuki shinrin mix.

the remixes come from prominent producers around europe, so starting chronological from a2 to b2: sian has appeared on a lot on raves and parties with his surf board. he is an international traveller who loves to be reminded of the times when surfing farmers left their houses with door frames and no doors. his remix works in a way a countdown functions. building up tension at an incredible speed, this track is set out to explode... but sian would not be sian if he had not developed a club friendly torture . sian rides the wave of superfatt basslines and adds a sequence that sounds as if someone had replaced his teeth with thin pieces of metal, creating a humming voice comparable to one of a jaws harp. sian keeps the tension going with very few elements and shows he is a true masterof techno.
secret cinema has been accompanying us since his first releases mid of the 90ies and we truly believe quality prevails, not to mention his mayor chart hit just 3 months ago with “shake ur tech-ass”. well secret cinema is unbelievably massive in his production. we dont see how anyone can fatten up the sound more than he can. but it is not only about tuning and pimping and pimping and tuning... his remix is a masters piece of perfectionbecause it creates something rare... deep emotional hydraulic strength. this is like diving head on into a pool of silicone and getting sucked into it. this track has an hypnotic feel to it that is comparable to radiohead.
darko esser is an icon in the techno scene of the netherlands. his remix takes the track in to a direction you would not expect it could go to. starting rather minimal darkos remix soon takes a turn and brings in jack elements and cool nostalgic melodies that will warm the heart of every detroit techno lover. was it derrick may who played chords like this... these strings are looked up in the back of our heads like childhood memories of having your first popcycle exploding in your mouth. this is soulful music with just enough analogue imperfection and warmth to it.

bristol-born and london-based producer rekordah takes charge of lo fi funk records second instalment. as well as running the independent label pollen, rekordah also promotes a series of parties of the same name with efa (which have hosted artists of the caliber of mike slott and slugabed among others), and crafts his own brand of cosmic, dismembered hip hop, in that wonky style everyone is raving about.
>cherry coke< on the a side, is full of bubbling sounds that evoke the soda drink your nephew drinks while he plays with that atari you found in the attic, played over a dilla style beat, whilst in the flip side we find >butternut<, in which p-funk synthesisers rise side to side with space age special effects, frantic syncopated drums and 22nd century boom bap.

tiger supported by... rob da bank, kiko, markus kavka, mihalis safras, justin berkovi, ivan smagghe, orde meikle... moonbeam are back on traum! the russian brothers had a great year and have been voted as one of the top 100 djs worldwide by uk dj mag, in december 2009. we think they are wonderful, dedicated people who really deserve winning this award. with their new a-side track >tiger< moonbeam show their timeless quality and their deep knowledge of music, writing a seemingly simple but gigantic track. if you want to express in words what this track is like you might say it is a hybrid of joe beltrams >energy flash< fuelled with a melodic note and a lot of post-techno feeling. creating a revival of rave which so many people speak about, but so few actually reflect in theirproductions! the energy of this dark monumental new school acid track is counteracted by the two tracks on the flipside >land of the lost (strict mix)< and >zoo<. the b1-track >land of the lost< sounds like a soundtrack for a film set in a ghost-town in the midwest of the united states. a track that travels like a camera does... through different rooms of a deserted mansion. the b2-track >zoo< is the beat track of the record. it relies on its cool driving sequences and the hypnotic feeling it creates through them. adding small changes here and there that keep the track constantly going.

clone classic cuts continues to dig in the crates to bring back forgotten or obscure records from the past! this is 3 tracks by da posse (produced by hula... one of the outthere brothers... and with maurice joshua, k fingers & martell). strings & its my life are chicagos take on detroit techno... a rare release that sounds like a early derrick may record (think the dance) but maybe slightly more straight forward (as one might expect from chicago). a rare piece in house and techno history since this is one of the rare examples of a record that doesnt show the clear difference between chicago and detroit in the late 80s. this record most likely got produced within 1 year after rhythm = rhythms legendary nude photo and strings of life releases (both 87 and this came out in 88). as extra bonus track we have the groove. a phat bass driven chicago acid track that still rocks it. another fine piece of powerful dance music history back in the spot light!

spirit catcher is becoming more and more a permanent member of the systematic family. after their debut e.p. last year and their contribution to the >5ysyst< project last summer, these three tracks are their latest productions on my systematic imprint. something which always impresses me a lot is how jean and tom continue todevelop their distinctive spirit catcher sound, no matter if they release on 20:20 vision, nrk, moodmusic or elsewhere. its always an awesome mixture of fluffy driving house beats, a portion of deepest darkness and freshhypnotic sounds figures! i love the way how they do install the dark organ melody at >sedona<. the organ soundspretty outta space and lets me float away once i have closed my eyes. also, the mystic mood at >future fools<generates me a goose skin, every time i hear it. a1) new love - this elevating new track is deep, funky and sexy. the beat is ever growing, the bass never ending. disco mixes with deep winking and eye to electro. b1) low down - sounds like a completely different atmosphere. still funky, its the perfect tune for a poolside party in la as the sun is going down... smart, sexy ladies get the party started moving to this disco house dance tune. b2) dont stop is the natural conclusion to this 12inch. we re at the break of dawn when this drops, as the sun is rising. slow bpms and vocal intermissions for those whose feet still want to move to the groove.

classic sounding track by two long going and respected techno heads.. fabrice lig and titonton. these guys take it back to the early nineties when techno was still fresh and new... the days that titonton and dan curtin were debuting with their sophisticated techno sound. raw funky 909 percussion, bleepy analogue synths and great warm string sounds and beautiful melodies. purist techno tracks that never go out of style and reminds the old blokes why we loved techno in that period so much. and it shows the young cats that there is more then the standard dj tool techno! beanfield is on remix duty here... and he delivers an updated modern dancefloor friendly house version with a great string section that reminds a bit of knights of the jaguar and a killer bassline after the break. check!

nsi. non standard institute – eitherway, nsp o7 is the third part of nsi.s scale & sync research series. max loderbauer again is responsible for the analog sounds and sequences and tobias freund was responsible for additional sounds, beats and mixdown treatments. all in all a record that follows the idea of non standard productions.

nico purman is back for his third instalment on the marching band in the sky that we call our vakant home. purmans sound continues to evolve, covering truly large distances with every release. since his robostrobe inspired earlier vakant works tuesday ep (va017) and euphrasia ep (va025), nico drops 3 large-and-very-much-in-charge space jazz masterpieces that he fermented in what sounds like a midnineties new york house basement.

gem001 is egberts -dezelfde weg ep-. secret cinema has been dropping it regularly and the crowd response has been amazing! side a is a hypnotic melody driven techno slammer titled >dezelfde weg<. on the flipside is a deeper darker track called >vette sounds< with creepy yet commanding synths over a pounding bassline driven groove. this track has also received the secret cinema remix treatment to brilliant effect!

deepart returns with his snapshots concept. deepart is andi hart, and if theres one man out there which keeps true to his own sounds its andi hart. hes been pushing his sounds for almost ten years now, ever without doing any concessions. this double 12 inch brings eight new typical deepart tracks, they come in his typical minimal lo-fi style, but with the soul deep within. sometimes warm, frantic some other time.

chantals tracks are tinged with a hazy, nocturnal sadness, a touch of sexy, decadent disco glamour and a retro palette of sounds that reminds the listener of the synthesised soundtracks to john carpenters horror films. diegors & the dons (aka m. aguayo) tracks are testimonies to this fact. built simply but well, in the comeme style for maximum dancefloor power. the overall strangeness plus the syncopated melodies are distinctly latin and couldnt have come from any other label. cÓmeme is hot right now and this is definitely the best record they have done so far

not quite one year after his exceptional album sworn, anders ilar is back with his new cellular memories ep. its four tracks could be regarded as a safe cure for uninspired strictly functional dj-sets. you probably wont find many records which are that packed with enchanting sounds and melodies, longing emotions combined with infectious solid grooves. from the dubby back to square one, over the minimal massive 808 kicks in hazard ahead and the dramatic but blissful clicky and groovy ulterior motives, to the stunning choral epic ocean sonata, cellular memories ep is a musical pleasure and another masterpiece and of course a must for fans of anders ilar.

dualism are kwamina and gab from zurich. they produce music since 2005 and had their debut release on pheeks label archipel >dualism speech defect ep< in 2006.
today their sound appears minimally as twisted, queer-melodic deep and wicked techno with much love to the detail. their sound surprises with unconventional rhythm-structures and many-layered sound-design. their distinctive style and preference for idiosyncratically and broken sounds as well as the clever use of vocal snippets is always present on their productions.
the name-giving track of this ep is remixed by dapayk and also by estroe.

vivace is a project of stephen hitchell (cv313, echospace, intrusion) and is a unique hybrid of deep house, dub, jazz, & soul, a sort of new school/old school fusion which pays homage to chicago house heroes like chez damier & ron trent in their prescription era but with a modern twist. this project is the continuation of his previous soultek material initially featured on germanys force tracks & force inc family of labels back at the start of the century. the title track in its original form is a sub-aquatic journey through space and bass, as deep as you would come to expect from an echospace production but the sound palette has changed, shifting into a world filled with ambience and free form jazz. the use of live instrumentation & vocals are a driving force behind this project and add a depth and soul oceans deep, its like melting in sonic butter. the soultek mix is a frenzy of edits, funked up and sounds like it could be a schizophrenics take on house music, brendon moeller dives deep into soul, shifting and morphing the original into a proper late night house jam you could only imagine derrick carter or theo parrish dropping at the wee hours of the morning. the closing intrusion mix gives the original a frosty lime green haze best absorbed while inhaling, real trippy stuff. this first release has already earned countless play from francois k and in its inception (as soultek) was hailed as >jacks echo -- the future sound of chicago< by de-bug magazine, germany
