the album was released on the small abookyi label. named after a nightclub they played in called pelikans, and sung in english and fante, this was the first album where ebo sang on tracks, such as the classic ‘come along’, on which he also plays keyboard. this song clearly defined a new direction in highlife and has become a ghanaian funk anthem. ‘come along’ formed the basis of sadat x’s ‘remember that’ hip hop jam from 2011.

last year’s on the corner underground smash release, the 12” ep santuri’s embaire umeme, introduced uganda’s mugwisa international xylophone group (m.i.x.g) to the world. the recordings center on the embaire, a giant xylophone native to ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself. the instrument performs a key role in village life, with ceremonial playing sessions lasting for hours on end. these recordings may be esoteric in nature but they add important context to the santuri’s embaire umeme 12” and are a vital documentation of the iganga village’s culture, as well as that of uganda. jones has artfully chopped the epic session into a series of short evocative chapters to create a pioneering masterpiece. remix duties are led by griot house innovators, the diabolcal liberties, who have raved-up some sun ra frequencies for the cosmic junglist crew. last but never least, victoria topping has created beautiful artwork using the session photography taken by jones during the recordings

amongst hip-hop fans, boogie down productions first two albums criminal minded (1987) and by all means necessary (1988) both loom very large. and for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. that being said, too many people sleep on bdps third lp, ghetto music. released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the groups first two. as on by all means necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and dj scott larock, krs-one pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his edutainment syllabus. lyrically there was never a question about krsã power, and on ghetto music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. clear cases in point are two of the albumãs singles, you must learn and why is that? but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece who protects us from you (still sadly relevant in 2017), ghetto music and world peace. still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

juris boiko (1954-2002) and hardijs ledinš (1955-2004) were the core members of the nsrd, which is best known as latvian avant-garde, postmodern, experimental and underground music group active in 1980s.
their activities were widely multidisciplinary and they can not be considered as purely musicians since none of them had a professional musical education. their creativity was manifested through variety of media – music, performance and action art, visual arts, poetry, samizdat, the introduction video art in latvia etc. nsrd also made a significant contribution to the explanation of the theoretical aspects of art in the interpretation of the postmodernist movement, and developed the independent concept of “approximate art”. at the end of the 80s, nsrd got connected and performed with several artists and musicians living in west germany, including indulis bilz&#275,,,,,ns, micky remann and maximilian lenz aka westbam and others.

born in a remote log cabin deep in the scottish highlands, eventual reality, the debut album from the james l’estraunge orchestra melds jazz and electronic music sensibilities with a huge helping of heart and soul. in 2014 seasoned producer and musician ricky reid and his partner retreated from the city to embark upon a new life, in his own words “away from the constant, incoherent noise of the world”. as he set up his studio, the clean air and spectacular surroundings began to provoke musical inspiration like never before. then, like a scene from ‘field of dreams’, a series of talented musicians from his former life visited the cabin for a series of late night jamming and recording sessions, leaving behind them hidden treasures to be discovered and lovingly pieced together by ricky over the following months. with nostalgia so much a part of the album’s creation, the james l’estraunge orchestra can’t help but appear somewhat spectral, after all they are truly the band that never was.

a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

the seventh ep from the untold stories, is a collaborative project, beats and keys. the beats coming from nektar agu, and the piano from matias zurita, aka cossmos. both artists from buenos aires, and they obviously found a great harmony for this project, because the result is very nice indeed. a1 is a special work, entitled seiya . it s an enlivening track of distinct attitude, the flow is strong, the percussion powerful, and combined dextrously with the beautiful keys from cossmos. the effect is very inspiring, very mental - deep and evocative, and very enjoyable. this epic work then get s a remix by archipel label boss pheek, who keeps all that made the original magical, and crafts a refined 8 min remix, if you liked the first track then this will be a very awesome further development. the ep is then concluded by a 7 min work by nektar agu and cosmos, this time a more upbeat and trippy affair, again it s beats and keys in a cool harmony, again done with considerable skill, and is a nice end to a fine record.

the sweet and soulful harmonies of the whatnauts spanned a 15-year career in which they recorded three albums and numerous singles, ranging from timeless ballads to temptations-esque politically-charged funk to dancefloor boogie. the music of the baltimorebased group, which featured the angelic falsetto lead of billy herndon, gained relevance for a younger generation via samples taken by the likes of de la soul, a tribe called quest and kanye west. this 2-lp set is a career compendium of their best slow jams, funk grooves and 12-inch club tracks, including multiple unreleased and rare sides.

first time band anthology - includes 9 unreleased tracks! this fall, the independent literary press all night menu will publish sam sweets hadley lee lightcap, a nonfiction novel that traces the backstories of the three members in acetone, a band that played in los angeles for nine years. though few heard them, their recordings are time capsules of who they were, how they lived, and where they came from. light in the attic has partnered with all night menu to present acetone 1992-2001, the first anthology of the trios music. the book and the album will be released at the same time.

uwe schmidt has long been recognized as one of electronic musics most respected and versatile artists. a man of many talents, projects and identities including atom heart and senor coconut, uwes playfully ironic and acid- tinged atom tm moniker is perhaps the identity that most speaks to the new york dancefloors where the bunker makes its home. several atom tm releases are much-loved bunker classics and with the future nights 12inch uwe offers a heady experiment in what happens when a track takes you so far inside your own head that you’re in danger of losing your way back. . the a side is comprised of two fuzzy vocal techno tracks that are as fun to listen to as they will be to subject to some heavy tweaking in the hands of a capable dj. the b side, chemistry is particularly versatile and crazy-making with elements of darker techno stirred into a disorientingly stereophonic maelstrom that’s guaranteed to cause a dancefloor to lose its moorings until the only thing keeping reality from splintering is the tracks dry academic vocal reassuring us that its all just chemistry

making a debut appearance on our own invisible ep 6 compilation last year we re very happy to at last feature a full 4-track ep from the mysterious immaculate rivombo. again the music is filled with that signature sound of live african percussion and 303s but this time with additional thumb pianos, hypnotic vocals and spacey synth lines. purporting to be from burundi (for all we know this could be the product of an elaborate ruse emanating from berlin tbh) the enigmatic producer (he? she? they?) has once again excelled and produced an ep that manages somehow to sound uplifting and spiritual at the same time as it is deep, dark and dubby. whatever, the music s great and that s what matters. definitely one to watch out for. another great ep from invisible inc. trippy, far out sounds. my pick is b1.killer party tool!! zona del silencio or the zone of silence is an area deep in the mexican desert. it is the home of several rare, mutant species of animals (including the purple cactus and a malformed version of the desert tortoise). the area’s name derives from an odd anomaly that prohibits radio waves from transmitting inside the zone. when asked about the strange phenomena, the locals invariably reply that they do not see strange things in the desert, only strange people. play this record three times and the idwt gang will appear in your mirror and smoke you out.

in the whole history of hip-hop music, few groups can claim to have been as influential and important as joseph saddler’s group grandmaster flash & the furious five. many of the genre’s signature elements and trademarks can be traced back to the supergroup founded by the grandmaster, their discography was among the first to feature recordings of scratching and turntablism, their’s was the first to feature songs with political and social commentary, they were the first to refer to rappers as mcs, some might even say they were the group that first coined the term hip-hop.

monumental house anthem alert! another classic jammer from 1992 lifted straight from the strictly vaults. this one s huge. phuture aka acid house pioneers spanky and dj pierre (with a little help from roy davis jr) turn in a driving, acidic monster in true wild pitch style. probably the only record that begins with a sinister voice saying this is cocaine speaking before diving head-long into one of the best anti-drug house records ever. absolutely brilliant. bubbling 303 basslines and cavernous handclaps combine with a funked out, dubbed out synth line that just doesn t stop. phuture will survive, and they weren t lying when they said that as this record (among too many others they had a hand in) still rock today. yep, still fresh. tried and tested, often imitated, never bettered. phuture are the originals. open up your eyes (and ears). this one s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all 4 mixes as per the original release way back when. essential stuff here. you simply need this one.

dark entries is proud to present the deluxe 2xlp reissue of ‘come visit the big bigot’ by severed heads, oone of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the australian post-punk independent music scene. they began in sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of ‘industrial’ noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. as the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. after many line-up changes featuring garry bradbury and psychedelic guitarist simon knuckey, severed heads was the vehicle for composer tom ellard. ‘come visit the big bigot’ was severed heads’ first record to be released commercially simultaneously in australia, north america and europe in 1986. it was a prime period for this industrial dance music and bigot was a respected album that did well from the tour they did with skinny puppy that same year. quite a few people still define the band by this period. ‘come visit the big bigot’ was made on a fostex 16 track recorder in tom’s bedroom, employing the newly acquired akai s612 sampler and roland sh-101 to create most of the drum sounds. the album signaled a new direction, flirting with the dance floor and the pop song. presenting the heads at their most cohesive, while retaining their distinctive musical stamp. tom’s vocals are harmonized, slowed down, sped up, run through fuzz boxes, backwards, drum machine rolls, sampled guitars, horn sections, and voices but with a subversive rather than malevolent intention. tape loops are more subtle and define their own space and texture. like the original australian version of the album, we’ve included a bonus disc featuring three extended remixes by sydney dj robert racic (who produced the edited 7” version of “petrol” we reissued in 2015), plus three b-sides from the ‘twenty deadly diseases’12” and two additional tracks from the same recording sessions.

invisible starlight is a ripping tune by an unknown midwestern funk outfit with a driving backbeat and soaring horns. it sounds like ohio to us, but we can t be certain. however, we are sure that this band must have rocked local bowling alleys and lounges wherever they went. universal cave is proud to present our edit to our fellow 45 loving movers and groovers. on the flip, the beat broker rounds out the original with his signature style and an impeccable ear. the kind dub s sun drenched delay and reinforced drums ensure that invisible starlight will shine on any dancefloor.
