last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

ursprünglich war nämlich schon 1998 ein album mit diesem titel als bootleg-variante erschienen. dabei handelt es sich jedoch fälschlicherweise um die aufnahme einer show aus manchester, statt aus der royal albert hall.

komponist roque banos hat schon scores für filme wie “der maschinist- (mit christian bale) und das remake von “evil dead” (regie: fede alvarez) produziert. seine neue arbeit für “don’t breathe” katapultiert ihn in den olymp der suspense- und horror-soundtracks. die vinyl-ausstattung ist - wie bei invada üblich - edel: klappcover, bedruckte inner-sleeves, orangefarbenes vinyl, downloadcode. “don’t breathe” ist nunmehr auch in den deutschen kinos zu bestaunen und in den top 10 der kino-charts. in den usa wurde der film ein so großer erfolg, dass er sogar -suicide squad- vom thron der kino-charts stieß. nicht schlecht für einen horror-film mit kleinem budget. die frankfurter allgemeine zeitung schreibt: “nein, das ist kein schockschrott, das ist eine echte horrorkinoperle: das dunkelkammerspiel “don’t breathe” von fede alvarez zeigt, wozu das genre fähig ist.” ein großer teil der nervenzermürbenden atmosphäre baut auf roque banos akustisches setting - statt klassischer instrumentierung gibt es hier düstere soundscapes.

brand new, rambunctious, rootsy, spiritual brass-band music from lagos, with singing, drums and home-made percussion. obadikah is a group of old friends who play together in the cherubim & seraphim and baptist churches of the ikeja and isale eko districts. a couple of them were founder-members of the eko brass band, they’ve played with pretty much all the key nigerian reggae artists. the tunes are mostly traditional yoruban melodies, often sung at bed-time. the songs are mostly original, sung in yoruba (though jomido is an egun song from the badagry area of lagos state).

new to the stay underground it pays gang, the ninth release on the label comes from one of the hotest & experimental berlin producer (bordeaux native) : willis anne ! after a few releases on great labels such as berçeuse héroique & nous, he’s also the proud owner of one the most interesting label we’ve seen for a while called lan (perseus traxx, steve summers, andreas gehm ...). we get the chance to get 5 cuts on one ep which is almost a mini album introducing you guys to his astonishing sound. it could be described as dreamy, raw, completely analog (his trademark), well some kind of proto-techno new-wave belter. killer.

fresh back in … ‘limerence’ is not only misantrop’s debut outing, it is also the inaugurating release of his own label foul-up. the sound pops out of an industrial mindset, but the title piece reverses out of garage/classic house that nods to 90s r’n’b. on ‘nocturnal emission’ friend jon marius brogaard aeppli’s guitar solo is vogueing out on the floor, psychedelic rock meets psychotic blues by way of sheer uk sound.

knapp 40 jahre sind seit seinem ersten erfolgsalbum »oxygene (1 - 6)« von 1976 vergangen, weitere 20 jahre seit teil zwei: »oxygene (7 - 13)« aus dem jahr 1997.

jamie roberts is no stranger to the more experimental tenets of the techno genre, and much of the british artist’s output of late has hinted at more leftfield leanings. a recent return to will bankhead’s trilogy tapes imprint saw a brace of meditative, post-detroit workouts - employing the same heady, hardware aesthetic as much of his work on ternesc - though at a drastically reduced tempo. it’s this same willingness to break down perceptions regarding his own music that marks walk type – roberts’ debut on the avian label, as a notable chapter in the artist’s discography.

cosi002 further documents an emerging, ex-germanic theory of perth dance music, typified by tracks built on techno’s stern compositional logic, but poly-functional and cross-disciplinary, wearing the stripes given to them by this most nonpareil of electronic music ecosystems.
the ep has both dance floor heft and mood-focused flexes. “the hunt” is a solarised, laser-sharpened and hi-hat driven garage/big room hybrid. 8-minute “m is for audio” is a workhorse techno slow burner with all the red-eyed melancholy of greats like “acid eiffel” and “deep burnt”, acid burnt and stinging at the mid-range. conversely, “rube” abounds with percussive warmth and ear-dancing patterns, as does “freshness and convenience”, a bastard union of dusty breaks and a hard funk bassline. the ep ends with ambient cyber walkabout “freetown”, peripatetic, matte-toned and pulsing with vital signs.
