madame e. is a musical setting of georges bataille’s “madame edwarda”, a short novel that interlaces themes of eroticism, religiosity and death, and was written under the pseudonym pierre angelique in 1941, during the occupation of paris. composer mirco magnani wrote eleven electronic pieces and presented them to actor/singer ernesto tomasini. they turned them into songs by adding vocal melodies and together they produced a libretto based on bataille’s french text. the result of their dynamic interpretation is a hypnotically spellbinding performance where the audience is transported through worlds – ancient and new – and where tomasini’s haunting falsetto conveys the tormented emotions in bataille’s work and becomes the instrument that articulates the writer’s famously obscure themes.

bastardo electrico is a techno night and label based in cork, ireland. it’s run by jamie behan, a veteran of the scene and one half of flexure alongside stephen mahoney. both have been djing since the mid-90’s, but flexure is a relatively new hardware-based project that sounds like a mashup of techno, acid, electro and chicago house. shadow puppets is flexure’s debut ep, a collection of unhinged machine bangers fans of tinfoil’s and on the hoof’s weirdness will likely appreciate.

incoming! adult only 46 is here and it’s another biggie. chris carrier’s trusty label always delivers the funk and this release is no exception. featuring rhythm&soul plus russian newcomers belogurov and orbit and the bossman carrier himself, it’s comprised four tracks, all with their own unique groove and atmosphere – perfect for anyone who loves deep rhythmic house music with hypnotic sensibilities. rhythm&soul takes one side of the record, the first of his tracks ‘take off’ comes in with sturdy beats pushes things along at a steady pace. his use of ‘live’ sounding percussion is evident throughout, working perfectly alongside a captivating double bass keeping things moving. if you manage to stay still while this is playing then there’s something wrong with you, utterly irresistible. the second track from the madrid-based producer is another upbeat joint. the deep bassline bounces up and down while razor sharp hats slice and dice their way through the lower end. as with most of rhythm&soul’s work, there are lots of nuances and details peppering the track, keeping it interesting from start to finish. on the flip side we have the russian boys belogurov and orbit, who deliver eight minutes of pleasure with ‘jysk’. smooth cosmic grooves rise up off this steaming hot, sensual cut. a naughty allure emanates from this track as it moves forward, subtle pads swirling in the background to suck you in and keep you locked to the groove. and to round things off, chris carrier delivers a typically eccentric roll out. subtle beats are placed over an analogue low end together with a selection of strange sounds direct from carrier’s well-equipped lab. variations in the rhythm and texture keep this one interesting all the way until the end.and there it is, another hot one from the adult only camp… strictly for over 18s!

the fruit band s fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 single, say it, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy djs and collectors. athens of the north has since reached out to cypress studios of jacksonville, florida and discovered a complete album of the group s stylish, dancefloor-smashing funk and deep disco on tape, unreleased for over 30 years. here we present out two favorite unreleased tracks on 45 for the first time. 500 only no repress.

basmala is the debut album by the american world music and ambient soul production basmala, released in 2016 on preservation electronic recordings. the album maintains a hip-hop base and ambient or minimal atmospheric sound, which is the unique signature of basmala.

underground quality boss jus ed is beginning 2017 in fine fettle, with transition his first album since 2014 heading up a spate of vinyl releases. the triple-vinyl set is full of evocative, immaculately produced deep house treats, from the alton miller style intricacy of the loop 222 bodin strasse and shuffling, yearning the day prince died, to the rich bass and dancing drum machine hits of medellin my new grooveland (inspired, apparently, by a recent trip to colombia), and the low-slung, motor city grooves of sci-fi connection. best of all, though, is the rushing positivity of spring is near, where intertwining synth lines bubble away over a fizzing, techno-influenced rhythm track.

globe trotting crate digger daniel t, exploded on to the scene with a string of releases after his amazing debut tetrachromat on young adults a couple of years back. daniel has been growing some serious gems in his laboratory. two gems that have come to maturity and have been plucked for the fahrenheit/celsius ep on cosmic pint glass records. daniel has crafted something special in these two cuts. beautiful, bouncy and positive tracks that work as well on the dance floor as in the soundtrack to a road trip. after hearing them, cpg called in their top men lauer and jack pattern for remix duties.

modular ball is an experienced duo from japan. sound engineer isao kumano teamed with musician kenichi takagi for their first release on rowtag records. they usually work together with alex from tokyo under the name tokyo black star. they share a same passion for analog old synths but kenichi added his touch on the project using his own modular systems.

“mornin” is a radical discoid track built with alien hoover pads and synthetic stabs that is both fresh and euphoric. “clean sunrise” has deep feelings for south african shores and gentle rhodes harmonies. “mannam” is a triumphant little number whilst “capasa” is a 6 min long improvised recording locked down in one take.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

emika’s very first symphony orchestra piece “melanfonie”. featuring soprano michaela srumova and the prague metropolitan orchestra. this recording was paid for by emika’s fans via her kickstarter campaign “how to make a symphony”.

deepblak’s chief alchemist aybee releases his fourth full-length studio album, the odyssey. as befitting its grand title, this newest long-player finds him concerned with personal journeys: both the personal one that has brought him to this point - living in berlin, 15 years since founding deepblak in his native oakland - and the one that beckons for him personally and creatively in future: aybee sees himself as being halfway up a mountain, looking back on where he has come from, and to where he will be headed next - both concepts play a profound role in the emotional textures of the album, which in true deepblak fashion draws from jazz, deep house, techno, hip hop, blues, experimentation, cinema, space, time and infinity.
