“ledyanoy album” is an ethereal feast containing orchastrated textures and thumping cuts alike. the winter theme of the album is easily recognized through the icey synth sounds and the beautifuly array of bells and fx which blend this lp to a cohesive collection of heart wrenching ambiances.

manse delivers the second 12” on his own mns imprint. ‘bang tap borrow’ sees the u.k based artist draw on familiar, drum heavy influences merged with mangled found sounds and distressed melodic refrains. exploding, rattling and swerving it’s way into the club.

goldmin founder romain lanteaume aka einka meets terrence dixon for a 2nd record which is nothing but a logical suite to the one released last year. this one is probably less deliberately dark but to us the edge was not dark at all, like what we tend to call melancholy isn t obviously a negative feeling. we believe there s no real duality between things and states. there s an incredible amount of degress in between. its always a bit more complex and deeper than the first impression!

the fourth release on bjarki and johnny chrome silver’s bbbbbb records, comes hot on the heels of the first. two and three are limited run, vinyl only, hand stamped releases to be sought out from your local dealer. bjarki returns as cucumb45 with the 5-track ep ‘something weirdcore’. on the surface there are elements of jungle, breakbeat, techno and rave, but to say this spans genres would be an understatement – it defies them. the title track instantly commands attention with breaks samples offset against indecipherable robotic groans and melancholic chords, but a sudden change of drum pattern shows this is more than a reprieve of known territory – it’s a voyage away from the limits of tempo and genre. this theme is explored throughout the ep by way of unnerving stripped back techno (akureyri), electro with subtle inflections of dancehall (comatack) and even a big beat/dub influenced jam (music for advertising). as cucumb45 plays with genres as we know them, so he does with the emotional resonance of the release. frequently switching from euphoric to anxious, each track is a testament to his incredible attention to detail. simply put, this is music for those who hate to be labelled.

discographies in dance music don’t come much more impressive than that belonging to paul woolford, the man behind seminal releases for the likes of planet e, xl recordings and running back. special request is the project that sees him continuing to defy expectation with a new ep on the fabric-run label houndstooth. stairfoot lane bunker encapsulates this approach with 5 bold new excursions into the outer limits followed by a remix from minor science (known for his previous releases on whities and the trilogy tapes) the eagle-eyed will notice 5 of these tracks appear on fabriclive 91. this ep is issued as an addendum. redrum is the fierce opener. rampantly-edited electro beats, a sampled speak-n-spell vocal, and a pure sci-fi breakdown sets the scene for the rest. stairfoot lane bunker and replicant are jungle tracks taken to dizzying extremes - the former building from widescreen atmospherics, thunder spells and lightning before descending into a frenzy of breakbeats and long heavy bass notes. replicant ratchets the pressure up further with hyper-edits across it s breakbeat introduction and throughout, punctuated by furnace-rattling subs. telepathic dog and five lane ends are highly evocative ambient pieces, pushing into the uncanny realms of metaphysical music. to end the release minor science comes through with his remix of stairfoot lane bunker, effortlessly blending in his own work with the disjointed sr breakbeats, flashing only snippets of the serrated bars, chopping them up and creating a new track in the process.

live from concrete island is the debut album from brighton based producer stephen maskell, aka the nags head. taking material from the last four years, he s created a head-spinning tapestry of melodic techno and crushed cityscapes. like echospace, maskells destroyed visions nail the feeling of being a stranger in a strange land. for the city s lolloping, dubby percussion we reach deep into its guts, pulling out a squiggly bricolage of pistons, pool balls, window frames, jets of steam. in turns rasping and narcotic, concrete island s beatless sections are akin to the crunching menace of early clark, or murcofs cosmic space treatments. an occasional shimmer guitar pop gem emerges from the rubble.

awake is a soundtrack for roaming around vast city landscapes between late night and early morning. a lone wolf observes the scenery and watches over people, their heads low, on the path home to sleep. inspired by 1980s movies, drone and video game soundtracks, rob orme aka submerse returns with an update to his signature sound.

following the first chapter of andy mac sdiving birdseries, idle hands welcomes italian producer piezo into the fold with an ep that harks back to the smoky, dubwise ambience of some of the label s earliest releases. luca mucci was a bristol resident for a few years before returning to his native milan, carving out an identity for his piezo alias with a slew of dubstep-focused eps on labels such as artikal music and subaltern. while on an idle hands skirmish stateside and playing on ny radio, one of the kelly twins dropped lume and remarked on how idle it sounded, sparking the process that led to this record. you can sense a link the early kowton records on ep opener opeq, all monochromatic textures and taut, slow-stalking rhythms, but here those facets are interspersed with a unique melodic elegance that offsets the moody immersion of the track, eventually blooming out into an effervescent slice of slow-motion house music. novemiluano meanwhile displays muccis capabilities in handling broken beats, exercising a devastating restraint without compromising on presence or energy in crafting a stunning piece of meditative soundsystem music. pushing that foundational dub principle of space and minimalism even further, lume closes the record out in stunning style with an intimate, glacial stepper that champions minute detail as much as looming gaps in the sound. with a peppering of micro sampling atop a deathly bassweight march, its a finely pointed arrow aimed right at the heart of idle hands, and we couldn t be happier to be releasing it.

we are back again with russian artist, module one. at just 22 years-old he is already had a stack of releases including an ambient album on detroit underground. * hometown* was written in the depths of russia in a place called novocherkassk, whose industrial cityscapes made a great impact on the overall sound of the album. most of the tracks were written in a few takes. most notably, the track * innermost self* is a dedication to module ones grandma who passed away a short time ago. due to a tragic sequence of events, he was unable to see her before she fell into a coma. the track is overloaded with tension and fear as well as stark anxiety. vinyl tastes better…

when tresor founder dimitri hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in east berlin on march 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of berlin s most influential and enduring techno clubs. “we didn’t know what would happen 10 months later,” he says. “we signed a lease for a year. which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months…”
as tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the us, germany, china, france, austria, italy and the uk, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification east berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.

an innate facet of the human condition is the very personal way we choose to process our own fatality. faced with dealing with the feelings of anxiety, death and fear after nearly drowning whilst diving in the south atlantic in his youth, ricardo donoso chose to channel them into his creative process. the result was scuba death, a project that was fully realised on donoso’s widely acclaimed 2014 further debut, nitrogen narcosis. after spending time devoted to establishing his kathexis label as well as delivering a trilogy of albums under his given name for the denovali label, donoso returns to further with a second scuba death offering, the worm at the core.

this music sounds mysterious and moody. well constructed works of smudgy acid and intermittent distortion make these tracks equally as ready for a dance floor as they are a spliff. we defaced the labels to further cloak the craftsman.

acid pauli is a name synonymous with certain aesthetic towards electronic music culture - both a part of the unhooked generation of that grew up experiencing his revelatory sets at places like bar 25 and fusion, and yet deeply rooted in musicality and adventurousness. bld, the second full album from martin gretschmann, (aka acid pauli), builds on his already impressive back catalogue which spans back to 2005, and includes a debut album released on nicolas jaar’s clown and sunset. over the course of the eight tracks here, gretschmann explores some of the many facets that have made him one of the most trusted artists in his field. released on his own (and nico stojan’s) label ouïe - the album is the perfect expression of the imprint’s commitment to diverse, exciting sounds, freed of the conventions of traditional club music. the album covers a number of moods and emotions, from dystopian carnivalesque vibes to moments of high intensity, through to deep melancholia and synth laden ambience. gretschmann’s well documented love of the sampler shines throughout - tracks are textured and colored with different hues from his extensive sound palette, whether it’s a part of his more psychedelic moments, or concentrated on his innate knowledge of dancefloor dynamics. as such bld sits together as a complete piece of music - to be relished just as much by blissed out home listeners as the left-field dancers.

electronic emergencies first release in 2017 is histoire dune ame by peine perdue, the acclaimed synthpop/minimal wave duo from paris and berlin. the ep, which is divided into four tableaux, tells a story that was inspired by 80s cult movie therese, directed by alain cavalier, about the mystical suffering of a nun who becomes a saint. expect nebulous acid wave chansons with mysterious french lyrics.

the ichinen project was born from the strong music connection between roberto bosco and kiny - both producer, performers and founders of last drop records imprint - and from the need to share their personal music concept. finally, this year they returns on their label with the first official track under new ichinen monicker. the title-track, a morning without glory, is indeed a unique melting pot of the different music approaches and visions. the track is determination at its purest form: a relentless 4/4 beat impulse, constantly striving and spaced out by industrial and metallic sounds that convey its deep and atmospheric imaginary. truly abstract and experimental techno that goes beyond its ordinary stylistic logics. on the b-side one may find a morning without glory reviseted at this time in two evocative interpretation by the most renowed artist in the nowadays techno scene. the first one is by dasha rush with a summer light remix, with a more serene and organic version of the original track. the last one is by etapp kyle who prefers to highlights low frequencies

phi002 returns to your favourite record store with a vengance. the pragmatism ep opens with a subtle yet catchy electro rattle crawling from a wet basement, soon opening rusty iron doors with an -early 90s electronica- sign with the help of a massive atmoshperic push. dial-up terror manages to recall the boundless sounds of pioneering techno days only to give hand to the playful and jacking afterhours stomper that is no - fun + compute. crossroads between ambient and electro rarely sounded as dreamy as with timeless ultrasonic sensei particle and its kaleidoscopic arrangements, that might have landed on of your favourite early warp releases. phi002 saves best for last with cinematic hypnotism called memento mori, a perfect closure for a colourful release that carves a soundscape deeper than trendy genre names.

following up his tender, soul-searching, journeyman 12” on lobster sub-label mörk last year. the northern hemisphere’s drum fanatical enigma roza roza returns with another round of heavily swung, choppy drum jams, all shrouded in a smooth aura of glistening hi ends, smooth carpeted pads and rankling, chiming basses.

aware is the alias of alexander glück, born 1983, who studied philosophy and physics in vienna, where he currently lives. apart from music, he writes monographs in the field of philosophy, which revolve around christian mysticism, buddhism and the poetics of modern cosmology, recently poesie des kosmos (2016). he wants to believe that someday, out of nowhere, a human, animal, or extraterrestrial being will accidentally produce the right sounds in the right order, and suddenly, everyone will be saved, forever. simone weil believed that only downward motions are real. in contrast, the will to ascension always constitutes an illusion. she noticed the strange feeling of sadness mixed with joy, naturally occurring when hearing sounds that gently move from higher to lower notes, from greater to lower expression, from intensity to stillness. feelings of joy rely on the reassurance that no one has to conquer the world. sadly enough, music is only a small glimpse of a pacified universe. the book of wind is a collection of short essays which never reach their goal, but vanish into nothing, to which they belong.

grebenstein is a producer, dj and visual artist living in kassel, germany. after playing in several bands as a drummer and guitarist he made his solo-debut with a 4-track ep on the regis helmed label downwards records in november 2014. the gloss 4 track ep for horo comes after his downwards records follow up strong, proud, stupid, & superior with seefried was released in october 2016. title track gloss centres on percussive crescendos and pensive guitar layers, while self and its version stretch this effect out into a grinding, slow motion introspection. loss closes the ep with serrated drum machine blasts punctuating feedback contortions. the tension throughout the ep is palpable, with the shaping of the tension providing the substance of his signature style. non club tracks for open minded clubs.

dominique lawalree (b. 1954) is a composer born and based in brussels. first meeting is lawalree s first archival release to date. culled from four different albums originally self-published on his private label editions walrus, circa 1978-1982, this compilation highlights the composer s unique sense of ambient and minimal composition. originally considered for release on brian eno s obscure records, lawalree s music is now no longer hidden. in this collection the listener finds the sounds of piano, synthesizers, percussion, wurlitzer, organ, and voice, all performed by lawalree. using these tools dominique creates miniature themes that gallop across the speakers in slow motion, stretching our normal sense of dynamics and color, effortlessly widening the stereo plane. on musique satieerique dominique pays homage to the influence of satie with simple repeated piano figures and a lush field of organs and flutes. and on other selections, like -le maison des 5 elements,- he takes a more wistful, ambient approach, layering keyboard lines, and invoking found/tape sounds to create a hypnogogic world of his own. childlike in its playfulness and surreal to the bone, the music spins like a carrousel placed inside the rothko chapel. lawalree s sense of timbre, tone, and overarching composition is like an impression of a home movie whose charm lies in its knowledge of intimacy, shared by few? an incantation of innocence. a quiet, understated music that is both touching and elegant gavin bryars
