initial listens to inre rymden (swedish for inner space) reveal it to be a curious combination of slow-motion house music and salubrious new age funk. in this case, first impressions are accurate, and they should intrigue you enough to dive deeper into the paradisiacal vistas tommy awards paint here. the opening track prometheus introduces that feeling of sundown deliquescence that very few musicians can summon, as it locks into a laid-back groove that induces utmost serenity, buoyed by sublimely mellow guitar vibes that should make fans of manuel gšttsching s ashra and phil manzanera s solo output spring to attention. draget conjures the sort of exquisite elegance and preternatural chill last heard on roxy musics 1982 lp avalon but somehow its even more blissed out than that boudoir classic. and so it goes for most of inre rymden: among the six tracks, only rexy hints at tension, courtesy of a bass line that sounds like it should score a prisoners walk to the electric chair. but thats tempered by guitar sighs of radiant melancholy, not unlike those lofted by popol vuh s daniel fichelscher. even when inre rymden gets relatively uptempo, as on hans logan, it still glides like gilded, glazed, balearic house jams, urged on by subliminal bongos and dappled with pastel guitar shimmers far off on the horizon. music is love and love is our music, runs tommy awards slogan (a sentiment beautifully echoed by david crosby on his revered 1971 album if i could only remember my name), but one could also argue that it is medicine a balmy ear massage that spreads healing frissons to all areas of your body and mind. tommy awards continue their miraculous act as scandinavians channeling the tropics with stunning audio verisimilitude.

rundum-sorglos-groove-paket zum zurücklehnen und genießen. re-release von 2000. sei es mit peter kruder als kruder & dorfmeister oder rupert huber als tosca, wenn richard dorfmeister seine finger im spiel bzw. an den reglern hat, darf man sich auf entspannt-fluffige klänge zwischen trip-hop, dub und downtempo einrichten. tosca wurde 1994 gegründet, erstaunlicherweise schon kurz nach dem start von k&d. ihr debüt gaben tosca 1997 mit -opera-. dessen nachfolger -suzuki- kam im jahr 2000 in die läden. beide alben erschienen bei !k7 und g-stone, dem label von peter kruder und richard dorfmeister. -suzuki- hat nichts mit kleinen japanischen autos oder monsterbikes zu tun, vielmehr versteht sich die veröffentlichung als hommage an den zen-meister shunryu suzuki. das album enthält in der cd-version zwölf und in der vinyl-ausgabe neun instrumentaltracks, in die vocal-samples instrumentenartig eingeflochten wurden. vielen fans des österreichischen duos gilt -suzuki- mit seinen -hypnotic, deeply chilled-out epics- (allmusic) als dessen beste einspielung. die neuauflage von -suzuki- ist die erste seit 2000.

“sometimes life can kick you in the nads”, says dominick martin (aka calibre). “when life does do that, i need to make music like this. with its tones of hope and gospel-level layers of self-recorded vocals. raw, uplifting, soulfull...” even to the most ardent of calibre follower, “grow” sounds like nothing else he’s done before. yet it’s not actually on the album it gave a name to. partly because its ultimately positive veneer (even though it was written in the midst of two toxic relationships - one personal, one with the bottle) doesn’t quite complement the deeper, more contemplative aesthetic of the album. but also because this is the start of a whole new story for calibre...

2 great downtempo tracks on another fine reissue from adelaide s, isle of jura . check out beach for a sublime tropical winner. big tip! . chrismar chayell‘s it’s never too hot 12&#8243,,,,,,, first appeared on the now defunct antler records back in 1987, but isle of jura make the balmy two-tracker their sophomore release. infusing belgian new beat rhythms with sea breeze and tropical fervour, both sides will transport you to the hidden cove of a deserted caribbean island. as their previous release, a big harvey favourite and fetching a pretty penny in the beardy circles..

a collaboration between aphex twin (richard d. james) and µ–ziq (mike paradinas), mike & rich - ’expert knob twiddlers’ was made back in 1994. richard edited the tracks into shape later in 1996 with his new apple mac computer and it was released later that year on rephlex, the label he co-owned and which released the first two albums by µ-ziq. this new reissued version has been carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original dat tapes, put into a more fitting order and, more excitingly, seven new bonus tracks and alternative versions have also been added. the album was recorded over a few days during the 1994 world cup, back when richard lived in a big shared flat in stoke newington. richard had tried to collaborate with a few other likeminded artists but something clicked when mike and rich worked together and the sessions have a unique feel, playful and at times actually drunk. these are fun experiments in the spirit of lighthearted moog pop and ripe 70s british tv themes, standing out from the po-faced electronica of the time with a garish glee. the record was made on what is now seen as pretty primitive gear - an atari, roland mks-80, memorymoog, roland r8 and a handful of samples on a casio fz-10m - but it’s to their credit that it resonates well with the hardware workouts coming out today. there s a broadminded but sloppy funk to the record, even whistling, singing and harpsichord in reg and wonky beat pile-ons in jelly fish . there s latin piano and wheezy drunken techno in ‘vodka’, or the sleepy spaced out ambience of ‘bu bu bu ba with its barely contained laughter which seems to reflect the absurdity. the new versions and bonus tracks are an absolute delight - from a trancier version of ‘vodka to the wonky bounce of ‘portamento gosh , the 3/4 dub of waltz, the banging door bass of brivert and muonds , the creepy seasick atmosphere of clissold bathroom and finishing with the strangely graceful and serious organ plodder. a generous and welcome return to the racks.

while his formative years were spent listening to everything from yes to photek, scott hansen didnt get his hands on an actual guitar or drum machine until he left his native sacramento for san francisco in 1995. encountering this whole new world at 20 years old was a profound experience,says hansen,better known by his musical pseudonym tycho and as the graphic artist iso50.at the time,i was just learning the processes of design and music, both felt very similar,and have flowed back and forth for me ever since.as seamless as his two creative outlets have been,nearly a decade passed before the release of hansens first proper tycho lp, sunrise projector (later expanded and reissued under the title past is prologue).and while three striking singles have emerged since then, the sum of all those sepia-toned parts is nowhere near the double-exposed soundscapes of dive.
