2023 repress incoming! for the second effort on his very own oblique imprint, ben buitendijk returns to the sound he’s only showcased through his well received promised land (mosaic) and a recent remix through subwax. this more dubby approach is the general thread in the sophomore oblique release called “past and present ep”. generally, this release is threading into deeper territories than it’s predecessor but is therefor revealing different sides of the label owner’s taste that are maybe being underexposed thus far.

there is no doubt that the native detroiter jeff mills, as >the wizard<, put his own mark on the cologne psycho thrill club-nights and thus the entire west german rhine area in terms of techno in the years 1991-2007 through his innumerable appearances in the cologne clubevent institution. mills track >mosainga<, which was given to claus bachor in 1996 for publication on his own label, also played a significant part in this well beyond the 2000s. in 1997 for the first time (unofficially) released in advance via roland caspers essence label on a >psycho thrill ep< white-label limited to 500 copies, mosainga finally appeared remastered in 2004 on psycho thrills own >motor city dayz vol.1< (ptne 2111) compilation including a dj-friendly bonus loop and then finally made its way straight into the clubs of the world. the track then received renewed attention beyond its natural decay value in the cologne bnkr years (2011-2016), which were deeply shaped by psycho thrill itself for colognes nitelife, in which the cologne label completely redefined the entire techno culture of the dome metropolis in its own way 2 be propelled forward once again.

2021 repress! the third time is the charme...that’s right. thus, the joy about the third album by marek hemmann is huge. likewise, the third album is perceived as an important brand which ought to show the actual extent of a musician’s potential. either hold one’s ground or dare something new? marek hemmann is not deterred by such expectations. he was merely in the mood for new tracks. the eight newcomers on “moments” sound accordingly - easygoing, detached and characterised by the same profoundly and harmonically balanced musicality for which marek hemmann is world-renowned. anyhow, a “just continue as before” mentality is not an option for the berliner by choice - from the beginning, his music effort- lessly blurred the established genre lines. in this vein, his new work is influenced by a great candour. as already accomplished with his highly esteemed albums “in between”and “bittersweet”, in “moments” marek hem- man takes the listeners - and certainly the dancers - on a journey through different spheres of contemporary electronic music.

after several unknown and mysterious releases, it is now time to reveal whos behind those innovations. adrian dragut, going by the name of dragutesku, is trying to express a different vision of himself. from the dark side of his ego to the peaceful depth of his soul. the idea for the album name, -dualism-, is to show that there is nothing -right- or -wrong- and similar to the concept of yin and yang, who cannot exist one without the other, thus becoming a duality. this release will come out with 8 tracks as a double vinyl, with limited copies.

2020 repress! after a relatively long break jaffa surfa makes his return with a new release that is a bit more raw thus shifting the sound of tape hiss into the same direction. in comparison with his previous releases on labels like bosconi extra virgin, all inn records and houseworx he is making an effort to explore new territories with ‘psy lance ep’ while staying true to his trademark housey sound. considering all the musical styles that jaffa surfa is taking inspiration from (from the soul/funk/disco trio, through all shades of house music and all the way up to techno) it doesn’t come as a surprise to see him churning out productions in various styles even within one release. the rolling yet deep ‘psy lance’ complements the playful and trippy ‘bazz’ nicely just as the beatless dj-tool ‘preacha bonus’.

charles duff and daniel fisher have known each other since well before their respective forays into dance music. they serendipitously crossed paths at some point in the early 2010s with mutual friends in the nyc club kid scene. shortly thereafter they realised they both were keen to ditch the vapid hipster bullshit that had fueled their early careers thus far in order to pursue something pure: techno. mind you, this was at a time when it was not terribly cool to be into underground dance music. if anything, they both were greeted with massive skepticism from their peers but that didn t ultimately deter them. both went from relative obscurity to regular slots at berghain. and for two american kids musing in a pathetic bedroom studio, this was nothing short of a dream come true. a prophecy had been fulfilled. the two tried their hands at numerous attempts at collaboration over a 5 year period but nothing seemed to stick. most of it sucked horrendously according to them. but not on this occasion. the stars finally came into alignment and they were able to execute a concise group of tracks that finally made sense together. which brings us to threads. threads, an homage to the uber-dystopian bbc docudrama from the 80s, sums up their dynamic approach to tracks. it s an alienating, sinister take on techno that somehow manages to not fully lose faith in dire times. much like life today.

jacks house makes its first move of 2019 with a third volume of various artist shenanigans pivoting around the crisp minimal house formula that has kept the label on track and in record bags thus far. rich nxt is feeling tracky and subtly spaced out on the heads down dubble, while politics of dancing comes correct with an insistent roller that finds its groove and stays there. julenns good company is a crafty, shuffling workout laden with deep chord pulses, and legit trips djedai- takes things in a freakier turn that should resonate perfectly with the after hours crowd.

krym mryk, a young record label based in crimea, was started by stas karpenkov with a diy approach. it all began when stas approached ildar zaynetdinov (gost zvuk records) with music of his own. back then, ildar used to host the radio gost broadcast, presenting new electronic music from russia, and stas s music made it onto the air. eventually he issued a 7 inch with his music in november 2016, thus starting a label of his own. and now he comes back with a new techno/ambient 12 inch includes a remix by stanislav tolkachev.

what do you get when you cross a frenchman, a dane, two irishmen and a swede? the debut various artists compilation from kyoku records, of course. gathering the producers who make up their whole discography thus far, the melbourne-based imprint are welcoming back dorsi plantar, sune, long island sound and ethyene (alongside folamour and marc bianco). translating from japanese to a befitting -dancing birds-, the odoru tori ep is revitalizing the elegant origami series for one last spin. the orizuru, hachidori, oumu and hakucho, that is, the paper crane, the hummingbird, the parrot and the swan are bringing the handmade array to a suitable conclusion. on the a side, the scandinavian connection is responsible for bringing some summer heat. dorsi plantar sheds his usual wistfulness for a slightly moodier, more functional track with -senorita lolita-, although still incorporating some of that playful sampling he s now come to be known for. -californicate- from sune takes a more laidback approach and channels the breezy and carefree atmosphere of the coastal golden state. on the flip side, long island sound follow the same recipe that made -delusions- such a big hit with the intricate sampling and eloquent arrangement of -ease in-. to top things off, ethyene, with the help of folamour and marc bianco, close out the record with a groovy, vocal number that sees them employ their signature french touch formula to great effect on the simply titled -good-.

2018 repress of this timeless classic. the desired by many and sought after ‘the time’ by vizar is getting a re-release. the hypnotic and sweeping track originally released in 2011 is still being featured in numerous dj sets to this day thus proving the ‘timelessness’ contrary to its title. besides these it appeared as one of the soundtracks in anatoly ivanov’s 2013 documentary ’kvadrat’ that is about the realities of techno djing exemplified by the life of andrey pushkarev. b-side is reserved for yet another worthy vizar masterpiece, ‘in between’.

an ardent heart is a focused techno mini album that brings forward stefan goldmann’s most dancefloor-centered material in a decade. the tracks push and pull relentlessly. despite their linear appeal, there is an intricately balanced interplay between the heavy-handed kicks, the bouncy bass accents and the sizzling, yet clear-cut details whipped up by the rallying drums. the peculiar, seemingly “vocalised” mode of synthesis is maybe the most unifying sonic characteristic of the six tracks and one coda. formant shaping, vowel filters and airstream perturbations let a wide range of sounding elements speak in the tongues of a cybernetic babylon. layered polymetric patterns perforate the aural plane with alien scripts. clearly structured, yet opaque messages that seem to have traveled for aeons emanate from the red-hot circuitry. they spill into a network of delays, channeled down into labyrinthine corridors, enveloped in electrostatic noise. most tracks build on chance patterns evoked with hardware sequencers and freeform modulation sources. the resulting synthetic systems are as cohesive as they exhibit vast internal variation and range. thus balancing simplicity and complexity right in the middle, the results are just as immediately gripping as they can feed sustained attention. a wide palette of distortion and overtones mark the contours of individual elements that seem to have near-physical qualities – as if there were metallic strings, thick membranes, a resonating sphere, all struck by electric mallets, caused to vibrate by mechanical bows and sung by silicone lips.

body sculptures is a contemporary project that brings together five unique voices in european experimental electronic music today. the formative element is the collaborative pact between sweden’s northern electronics and denmark’s posh isolation. last year marked both body sculptures debut live performance - a highly notorious set at berlin atonal festival 2015 - as well as their debut recording, “the base of all beauty is the body”. the disparate elements that have come to inform the project thus far are further refined and encoded in their new lp, “a body turns to eden”.

enter the winking ship and go on a journey through the half-human-half-hyper-reality of david goldberg. emo serialism is a sparkling macrocosm of breakbeat wizardry, technoid trance, robo emotion and versicolour ornamentation. the eponymous first track with its safe ground baseline is the cotton wool of the ep, the galaxy’s aether and the joyful opening ceremony of this planetary feast. baseelmnt64 rings out! the stars align and the tournament begins. lightyears later, hobbling yet graceful konradichtion 101 is the daring darling of the public, thus emerges victoriously. and the moral of this story is made for / left for blank.

this mirror-like musical progression starts with lots of dynamics and harmonies which then continue with a more sonically tranquil section while heading towards a dynamic ending, thus completing the symmetry and binding both parts in a seamless album.

the 3rd release on alma negra records is dedicated to the music of eritrea, a small (in african terms, that is) country nestled in between sudan and ethopia on the south end of the red sea. drawing from its native spiritual roots as well as the christian and islamic influences of conquering factions, this multiethnical country is home to an amazingly diverse plethora of cultures and musical styles. on this ep, we are happy to showcase the music of the saho people from the region of zula, which is located in between the coastal lowlands close to the dahlak archipelago. the word saho roughly translates (translated?) as nomad, pointing towards a lifestyle where tradition and culture is being passed on orally over generations. the exact source for these edits of the saho sound are thus lost to the murky depths of history, as they are based on traditional folksongs

excise is a vinyl-focused label based out of san francisco, california. each release pairs a regional californian techno artist and a local visual artist, thus serving as a platform to fuse the two local creative scenes. its first release features label co-owner muon with 3 hypnotic raw analog tracks. many of these tracks received heavy play time in the san francisco underground, and now are seeing a broader release for the first time.

as a polychrome composer, laurent perrier is developing his work through a large number of projects which, although they often share many common points, are all built on a strong identity. thus, zonk t has always been a way of exploring the most ambient fringes of dub, and the transition from the all-digital to compositions made entirely on modular synthesizers has overall not changed its approach in depth. yet, banburismus, whose unlikely title comes from the crypto-analytical process developed by alan turing during the second world war, begins by taking us by surprise with a long luminescent drone that seems to rise endlessly before dissolving little by little in a wall of echoes, glitches and distorted voices then make way to round and deep basses disturbed by metal peaks on which float distant blips, like farway echoes of the secret messages decoded by turing. real master stroke, this track occupying the first face of the lp is a trip in an ether much more populated than it seems. shorter, the three pieces of the b side participate in the same atmosphere, but still extend the sonic field. more stripped, more airy, more cosmic, banburismus achieves there new heights with ease. we could be tempted to play the game of references and try to put zonk t somewhere amongst the great experimenters of electronic dub. but who cares,, banburismus is well beyond categories, and laurent perrier, by cracking the code, opens for us the doors of a universe of disturbing and fascinating vastness.

for this 16th release, the label wanted to add to its panel of artists an emblematic figure of the french house scene for several years. it is thus franck roger who sticks to the production with 4 tracks in the colors of the french label.

trora vol. 1 is panda lassow’s interpretation of recent global tropical bass movements like gqom, kuduro and more. she likes bass music from around the world. thus, we can also hear influences from bounce and booty elements. as born and grown up in eastern germany, in trora vol. 1 she combines these with her musical roots she found in techno and rave music.
