artist susana estrada was one of the leading figures of the “destape” during the late 70s and early 80s, a period in spain when sexual openness and freedom of thought exploded just when the country was coming out of a dictatorship. . besides acting in lot of movies and musical plays, susana as a singer also released a few 45s, cassettes and one lp, “amor y libertad”, produced by the great josep llobell, which is now regarded as a cosmic disco classic. from that album, cosmic record store selected two tracks for side a of this 12”, “gózame ya” and “quítate el sostén”. for the b side, the label has included three edits in a nu-disco & cosmic vein by producers james rod, javi frías and mr. absolut aka sergio peña.

panic. it creeps up the spine like the rst rising vibes of an acid frenzy. the haunting chill upon your neck. there is a sound intensity makes while echoing through the body, the epinephrine pumping through the jugular vein, voices from unknown origin, the blood throbbing through the numb extremities, heart palpitations, the flashing visions, cold sweat, the heavy breathing, hyperventilation, dissociation, fight-or-flight. honzo gives us a vision of what it means to truly be in a world of terror and angst and in the secret bloodlit dark behind our eyes we enjoy the cathartic abreaction this brings us.

following rhythm büro’s debut release last year, the kiev-based label has returned with a successive rb002. in a similar vein to their first release, this release features vero and na nich as well as a welcome addition from an up-and-coming ukrainian producer, lobanov k. a2 finds a remix from the notable and much-applauded dj’s dj, eric cloutier. sonically, the record ranges from deeper, housey motifs and dubbed-out techno ventures on the a-side to electro-esque and slightly weirder break-beat expositions on the b-side.

after the successful calypso roses far from home album, because music will release a two remixes ep for the record store day. those remixes are made by the south african mo laudi. his work is considered to be in the vein of jamie xx’s music. forget the thorns, because she has them, and without delay pick this (calypso) rose who, at 76 years old, looks fresher than ever. calypso rose was always a fighter and had to overcome hostility from her father, a baptist preacher thoroughly opposed to her pursuing a musical career. and she was sexually abused as a teenager, as she bravely confessed in calypso rose, lioness of the jungle, the 2009 documentary about her. a tireless worker, she composed almost 800 songs, starting at age 13, and spent 17 years singing on cruise ships for the new york-based company celebration at sea, before playing on the legendary stages of the apollo and madison square garden with two of the greatest calypsonians, lord kitchener and mighty sparrow. calypso rose is a fighter indeed: you dont survive cancer and two heart attacks without a solid dose of grinta.

ambient power duo anjous sophomore statement continues in the vein of their 2014 debut, unfurling a full hour of mesmeric synthetic drift and veiled melodic undertow. comprised of mark nelson (of pioneering post-rock experimentalists labradford and pan american) and robert donne (of labradford, aix em klemm, cristal), the group work largely in long-form suites of sound, alternately spacious and dense. the new lps six pieces embrace flux and ambiguity: drones swell and shudder, hushed currents of noise glitch and dissolve, atmospheres congeal and liquify. as with the participants prior projects, anjou evoke a shadowed, mysterious mood, variously melancholy and transcendent. the album is an accumulation of craftsmanship and experience, blurred forms traced in light and fog.

the new york-based (u)nity is made up of michael valeanu, axel tosca laugart, chris smith, max cudworth and amaury acosta. they formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore afro-cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. they say they ve been influenced by everyone from chucho valdes to art blakey to led zeppelin to kendrick lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. guarapachanga is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at the new school. it s derived from the style known as guarapachangeo the most advanced form of cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. on this recording, (u)nity is graced with a guest performance by grammy award winner pedrito martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on cuban music. martinez is also a priest in the yoruba religion and a historian of cuban culture. over its eight and a half minutes, guarapachanga twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. the whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the afro-cuban essence that is the bands lifeblood. the white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous djs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. if you didnt know guarapachanga was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a loft classic, yet it s also as fresh and exciting as anything you ll hear this year.

days of being wild continues their collaboration with berlin based french producer franz matthews, releasing his first solo ep, the spacey, cosmic ostkreuz. half of the duo languages, whose 1st ep the label released at the end of last year, franz matthews explores a very different sound on his first solo effort, all space disco, retro synths and funky guitars out. title track ostkreuz has been road tested by the days of being wild crew on dance floors all around europe all of last year and has created euphoria and anticipation in equal measure. this is a cosmic hit from outer space, all constructed around well known ingredients that thanks to franz matthews musical and melodic talent rise here to epic heights. the b-side guns of rixdorf is another devastating peak time tune. while remaining in the same vein as ostkreuz, it feels more high energy with its irresistible funky guitars calling and responding over a driving bass. days of being wild always try to pair producers with remixers that will shed a new light on their work. its no exception with ostkreuz, who gets the reinvention treatment from no other than moscoman and rodion aka the claydermans. the cosmic vibe is still here hovering on top in the opening chords of the remix, but soon enough a sub, housier bass makes its way in the mix and wont let you go until the end. carried by shuffling claps and a bouncier beat, the groove here is totally re-invented, taking ostkreuz from peak time to the darker edges of after land.

next up on aficionado, is something a little bit different…bendith are a collaborative welsh four piece, comprising of carwyn ellis from colorama (who recorded hapus for ‘nado back in 2012) and elan, marged and gwilym rhys from plu. following the folk-pop vein of bendith’s album released in october 2016, the ep includes 3 brand new tracks and two tracks - ‘dinas’ and ‘mis mehifin’ from the self-titled album.two of the new songs include welsh language adaptations of old classics, ‘can am gariad’ is a version of the lesley duncan tune, ‘love song’, specially requested by aficionado recordings’ moonboots, who obsessively collects versions of this song. ‘hwiangerdd takeda’ is a version of the traditional japanese song, ‘takeda lullaby’ and is inspired by the 1969 rendition by akai tori, the vocal folk group from japan. bookending the ep is ‘dan glo’, a lovely and mystical music-box demo instrumental. all tracks retain the stunning vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements which have marked out bendith as a unique and very special musical prospect.

french producer keumel makes a poised vinyl debut on the inner balance imprint, with three originals of fine skipping house and a remix by imprints head domenico rosa. “laïka” is an afternoon space-walk in the vein of vintage derek carr, its synths, hats and mid-track acid line surfing light and breezy over a scudding, bumping bassline. rosa’s remix strikes a more contemplative note by placing a soft breakbeat under the acid line and airborne pads. “no chill” is a fast-tempo stripped-down house jam that kicks to the sound of the label’s father figure chez damier and his contemporaries. “space birds” rounds out the ep by building a slowburn groove out of which a lightly-warped acid line slinks part-way through.

veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project’s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980’s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7” cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.

it s not all minimal techno in romania, as the p-balans crew ably demonstrate on this second release from local hero the holy fix. the synths come down thick and gloopy on -the void- before -slagwise- ramps up the horror tones with a perfect distillation of what makes a soundtrack pop off. this is nightmarish disco music in the vein of maiovvi and the like, and it s delivered impeccably. there is a greater focus on club tones amongst the atmospheric fx on tracks & traps though, with -quite vicious- in particular conjuring up a thrilling, madcap romp through buffed up disco techno.

re.face limited inaugurates its first release on vinyl with a unique 4 tracker ep titled lost. authors of this work the italians re_named, creative and talented resident of one of the strongest national night-life realities, zu::club, based in pescara. if lost, eponymous ep track, condenses in itself the thrill of a hopeful search of quiet serenity, united seals the safety of a placid finding, conclusion of an introspective journey to the discovery of a significant identity of its own. on the other side, the remixes of sakro and jack wickham consistently run through the same vein, a current that leaves way of surrender, but never tragically lost.

fuse londons offshoot label continues its strongest year so far with fabe stepping up to the plate to present the square town story ep. kim on gin is the first port of call with its swung rhythms and idiosyncratic bassline with all city brother following on in much the same funked up vein. no more order injects a housier feeling with its toughened up drums whilst enzo siragusa & seb zito provide their own interpretation of kim on gin in their own inimitable style.

the second of two zentrum spinoffs is with us! as with the first, it comes loaded with four remixes. octo octa, vito & druzzi, cooper saver and turbotito, and lemonade all handed in top-notch reimaginings of tracks off jacques renault s debut lp, which came out just under a year ago, and they all somehow manage to be unique unto themselves while also sublimely bleeding into one another. octo octas rendering of mi casa samba serves as a propulsive beginning thats as dark and druggy as it is sharp and focused. vito & druzzis take on faith runs in a similar vein, but in a more stripped-back, drawn-out, and patient sort of way, it is nearly ten minutes long, so this is perhaps not a surprise. the b s remixes are brighter, sunnier, though that s not to say they re not bold. cooper saver and turbotito s redo of words has a certain funky swing to it that, paired with spacey synths and balearic bells and whistles, makes it ideal daytime disco fodder. the lemonade boys close the ep with their vibey take on faith. pads for days, a plump bass, and a focus on the original s sax make you wonder if the song itself somehow got stoned from a couple extra giant bong rips. a fitting way to end both the 12inch and the summer.

copenhagen purveyor of melodic electro soul kondi records finally resurfaces after almost a decade with a new batch of tracks from man of the moment, jeremiah r. sleek nighttime electro in a deep but spacious melancholic vein of the other people place and drexciya s mellow aquatic dives. includes an extended version of the outer rings , which appeared back in 2011 on the ultra limited the 5th dimension album.

sing with me: much in the same vein of the mannheim house sound made popular by artists like johnny d, nick curly, christian burkhardt etc. bretts gives us a deep but driving track centered around an african boy singing. brett chops the sample up to create a choir of ethereal voices to support the boys singing. as the track progresses it takes a left turn into weirdville through some dramatic synth tweaks & sweeps. this track is perfect for anyone who likes to dance standing up, with their head down and first firmly in the air. speaking japanese: many people will tell you learning to speak japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, and theyre right. lucky for you, brett has done all the work by translating his message into sound. the core inspiration for this track is based on a sample from a song by get physical owner and artist mandy. they were kind enough to let brett use the sample and run wild with it. the result is 8 minutes and 12 seconds of over driven 909s, rolling bass lines and a pad so thick you need a fork to eat it. all of this keeps the calm while frantic chatter and out of this world fxs take you to a japanese after party somewhere in shibuya.

in collaboration with aniara records sankt goran presents an old swedish release that has been released as promo only in 1999. its a release called slobban by a late 90s trio of jens johansson, peter gustafsson and carl magnus ernström from falun in the woods of dalarna, two hours north of stockholm. almost classic detroit techno tracks with some jazzy influences from these guys that have been playing around and tweeking their deep bass nine, tb-303, korg dw8000 and yamaha dx7 & dx10, sprinkling some samples on top with the casio fz-10m since 1994. the peepz of aniara were so impressed by this obscure record that they found it essential to get a small run back avaialble for the many vinyl heads around. vinyl only release of these great swedish techno tracks somehow in the vein of the breakthrough tracks of aril brihka. nice one!

so far the most -punk- release in the borft catalog. this is the meeting between johan sturesson (kord) and petter svensson (nebula). while petter has his background as a punkrocker johan has some years of experience in the electronic vein this meeting result in a ebm/punk/techno ep dirtier than ever. lim ed 300x handstamped + sticker.

based in tallinn, estonia, young up-and-comer andreas kask offers up the inaugural release on new london based imprint x-kalay. due 7th december 2015. hot on the heels of his emotive three tracker for amsterdam based imprint, legendary sound research, kask continues here in a similar vein. saturated in machine warmth, we are taken on an unerring journey through the analogue deep. soundscapes shot through with the warm emotion and raw melancholy hues of a new tallinn dawn.

ltd 2016 repress !! helsinki based common labour gives birth to its second offering on this limited vinyl only release. continuing in the same vein of quality twisted deep house, potholes unravels the mahla ep. the title track mahla gets the juices flowing with a hypnotic deep house groover. serenades head honcho roberto rodriguez takes the remix reins and works mahla into a more percussive and refined interpretation. its an honour having him on the common labour imprint. on the flip side, gambler sleazes off into b-grade italo disco spaghetti western territory. a possible soundtrack to a horror flick with kenny rogers stumbling into a truckers rest area after a messy night out. rounding off the ep, spoekhus picks up the pace and mood giving the handbag circle some ammo to shuffle their stilettos too. cementing another polished offering from this artisan label.

after his two sana releases in 2014 somewhen s mysterious techno saga is introducing in 2015 the first part of the final sequel. the inverted concept contains four tracks. a-side opener „tr440“ with his steadily pounding synth followed by „veidt’s“ uncanny atmospheric existence. the hammering and aggressive „tas- and the the mellow vein of „selph“ create the back side of this profound project.

its a very exciting time for soul of hex right now. not only have they hit upon a rich vein of creative inspiration and clearly loving every second of being in the studio making some brilliant music, but the young duo from tijuana also seem to be inadvertently, or maybe purposefully, shaping a fresh new direction for the mexican house scene. taking influences from detroit via berlin, and with a knowledge of house, jazz, funk, soul and disco which goes way beyond their years sebastien vorhaus and 4004 are in the vanguard of this new generation of house producers and are already making their mark worldwide through releases on cvmr, mcde, faces and their own vicario ltd imprint.
