uk funk connoisseur duke slammer takes the driving seat on the 303-fueled ‘bangkok skytrain’, with remixes from moscow based simple symmetry and returning artist tony g. inspired by tropical heat, bangkok skytrain utilises 303s, analogue drum machines and mixes in field recordings taken from an excursion to thailand. the result is a heady concoction of warm basslines and humid atmospheres, with a groove reminiscent of early 90’s melodic techno and a cheeky drum track that wouldn’t be out of place on a larry heard record. simple symmetry, the lipski brothers from moscow, slowly rebuild layers of the track like a locomotive building up momentum, and in typical style simple symmetry style finding the perfect vocal sample and pan pipes that help propels you into the foreign lands. before you know it the track is pumping at full chug! tony g’s take goes a bit further afield than the original. a dub rhythm sets the picture in outer-space. hihats stutters like cosmic dust rickashading off the nosecone of the space ship while longing strings take us deep into a distant nebular before the 303 bring the thousands of new galaxies into view. definitely music to listen to in the dark! look out for the secret dancefloor weapon ‘just drums’, an industrial drum machine workout for the freaks!

high mobility weapons unit sets off from an unknown location on earth, making its maiden voyage beyond our solar system and towards a distant galaxy. the transverse velocity ep is the debut release on the self-titled imprint, serving up four original tracks that are heavily influenced by mechanical cycles and deep space concepts. the a-side kicks off with the eps title track transverse velocity, where an array of eroded satellite bleeps and waves loop together as the analogue low-end pulsates rhythmically below. in wave 102 the bleeps are detuned and erratically timed, with a glitchy tape delay unit modulating them throughout the track. the saturated 808 kick drum and processed percussion are given a functional structure, allowing the bleeps to take centre stage. on the b-side, both cycle 01 and astronomy tool serve as stripped-back percussive dj tools. cycle 01 rolls along with its hollow, muted polyrhythmic stab line, whilst astronomy tool drives forward with an effective, crystalline synth hit. mastered by black monolith studios.

key vinyl don their scouting caps once again for another split ep featuring fledgling and debuting talents. first up is the plant worker. this french dj and producer isn’t exactly new to the game, but as the plant worker he’s been slowly journeying down harder, rawer trajectories—as the name may suggest. with a trio of eps out already, “iota 001” and “iota 002” continues his exploration into purer techno forms with two cuts of deep, probing, loopy floor material. then on the flip, key vinyl unveil the first works from masked newcomer transient x4. “lost in perceptions” is a jangling sic fi trip to techno’s bleak and pitch-black periphery, whilst “ways to space” sends its cosmic theme off for a spell in the basement, coming out as a monstrous peak-time send off.

james ross is a guitarist and composer living in brooklyn, n.y. originally from pittsburgh, pa., he has studied guitar at the university of pittsburgh and the mannes college of music in new york city. he has studied sitar with pandit krishna bhatt, and north indian classical music and composition with la monte young and marian zazeela. a composer in a variety of genres, james has written music for orchestral and chamber ensembles, as well as solo music for the guitar and the zhongruan (a type of chinese lute). he has also performed and recorded electronic and improvised music. recent performances as a composer and performer on the electric guitar, laptop and other instruments include sets at the bell house, at the small beast at the delancey with percussionist joseph benzola, a performance with kyle bobby dunn at issue project room, at pianos with richard lainhart, at glasslands gallery with michael vincent waller, at goodbye blue monday with david beardsley, providing live music for katherine liberovskaya and ursula scherrer’s optosonic tea series at diapason gallery in brooklyn, with video artist alex carpenter at the tank in manhattan, and at damrosch park at lincoln center as part of the guitar ensemble for rhys chatham’s “a crimson grail.” a recording of the -crimson grail- performance was released on nonesuch records on sept. 14, 2010. as a classical guitarist, james has performed as a soloist and ensemble player throughout the northeastern united states. he received a solo recitalist fellowship in 1992 from the pennsylvania council on the arts and won the 1993 mannes college of music concerto competition, resulting in a performance of joaquin rodrigo’s “fantasia para gentilhombre,” at symphony space in new york city.

over the past years bézier has seen releases under the dark entries record imprint with the most recent telomeres ep this year. the title track &#30342,,,, or pronounced * mina* translates from japanese to * everyone*. mina is a journey through space with the initial ascent marked by a moody window of time in which uncertainty dominates the mindset of the passengers. once they break through the atmosphere and are proceeding as planned they land on the final destination, an interplanetary discotheque. mina was recorded this year with mark pistel on the helms for mixing and features sf drummer kevin woodruff of tussle fame providing live drumming for the last portion of the track. along with the title track the b-side includes tracks previously released on compilations but appear here for maximum record playing enjoyment. * serengeti drive* which appeared on honey soundsystems earlier hnytrx compilation of queer dancefloor artists is the slow burner of the group. * mysteries of the deep* which appeared in the jacktone cassette compilation of bay area electronic stars is the soundtrack to an underwater expedition. both tracks were recorded, produced and mixed by robert in his home sf studio in 2009.

where to now? records are proud to present beatrice dillons follow up release to the widely well received * blues dances*. this three track 12 inch sees beatrice step things up a gear in terms of intricacy, experimenting wildly to add to her already astute palette of timbre and rhythm. face a leads the record with the unmistakable skronk of saxophone cutting and jamming over the skeletal pulse of beatrices signature dubbed out techno landscape. initially the inclusion of saxophone acts as an aural abstraction or diversion to extract a little freedom from the pumping cavern of dark dub techno atmosphere punctuated with the mechanical juddering saw-bass, but as the piece develops and we become deep into the groove the inclusion of wild sax snorts trips us up and become the focus itself as new levels of complex melodic and rhythmic detail become apparent within this otherwise structurally obedient space. taking its cues from rabih beaini, miles davis * big fun* era, dresvn and keith hudson, undoubtably face a is a compelling, complex trip… heads down but arms flailing. face b continues the theme but takes the listener far deeper into the cavern. here the concern is more the effects of space within song, a moment where beatrice allows herself to move away from the floor to find a little more room for playful experimentation. the saxophone is further treated with a plethora of effects to compliment the array of dub signals that scatter and skip around the basin. the record closes with sonnier (walk in the light) which strangely somehow manages to feel jazzier in its components, even in comparison to a pair of tracks riffing on a manipulated free-jazz sax part. it sounds strangely unsure of its world, adding to this whole loosely slung, loping feel which somehow fits amongst the stern, brooding, and efficient synth play. beatrice masterfully manages to create a piece here that grows in intensity without ever increasing in pace or texture, every drop is intended to stir the listener a little more than the last. theres a sense throughout all the pieces of having rhythm imposed or even inflicted upon the listener but this is certainly not a conflict of ideas… there is optimism, harmony and above all - wild groove nestled within beatrices world of mutant shuffle.
