decadubs 4 is a vinyl-only companion-piece to hyperdub 10.3, the latest cd in hyperdubs ongoing series of birthday-marking collections. following on from the labels first two 10th anniversary compilations, the third act represented in 10.3 transects and extrapolates forward the hyperdub catalogue from yet another angle, this time following the melancholy vapour trail drafted by burials numerous atmospheric beatless moments. this ep tunes in to those 11 new moments of downcast ambience that comprise half of the cds complete content, resulting in over 40 minutes of hitherto-unknown audio which squarely shoulder their extended play billing.

skylax welcomes f.t.g., known to house music scholars as freddy the groove, and his many friends for our next release in 2014. last year, f.t.g. and his italian partner in crime, marco riff (who also appears on this very record), pressed a very limited run of a single-sided, special throwback tribute to late 80s chicago house music. the track was aptly named ‘tribute ’89’, and it put a more dancefloor oriented twist on a track by a certain originator with the initials r.h. needless to say, it became highly sought-after incredibly quickly and fuel was further added to the fire by the repeated club play by none other than the dj idol ricardo villalobos. luckily for our followers, that original mix appears on this ep with another unreleased mix of the track and 2 originals featuring belfie and alex tea alongside f.t.g.with enough said about ‘tribute ‘89’ itself, the unreleased mix maintains the warehouse vibe with a heavy kick and bouncing bass pattern but takes it to another level with the introduction of rolling vocal cuts and a rather ravey synth line. flipping over the to b-side, we are treated with two tracks by f.t.g. and alex tea, named ‘public enemy’ and ‘bango’, with the former also seeing belfie lend a helping hand in the production. both of these originals round out the record nicely and cement it as another skylax release that is definitely not to be missed

publicist is longtime producer/performer/musician sebastian thomson. his tracks approach house music from a darker angle, adding processed vocals and noise to a raw foundation that also takes cues from new beat, acid house, and detroit techno. when performing live publicist sequences the synths and not the drums, preferring to play an electronically treated drum kit in the middle of the dance floor. this adds an element of sweat, excitement and virtuosity not found in most electronic producer s live performances. sebastian thomson is also known as a founding member of post rock pioneers trans am and as the drummer of heavy metal innovators baroness. living in brooklyn by way of buenos aires, washington dc and london, publicist has spent the last four years touring europe extensively.

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

general ludd is rich mcmaster from new jersey and tom marshallsay from canterbury. the guys met at the glasgow art school, where rich studied environmental art and tom studied fine art. their first collaborations were interactive sound installations, but that quickly gave way to all night music making sessions, some of which resulted in this fine twelve-inch. both tracks have already become staples at mister saturday night parties. eamon tends to play the heady, brothers and sisters, and justin tends to play the absolutely crushing, woo ha, but were sure you ll like them both.

timely re issue of reeses cult classic just want another chance. one of technos classic basslines that inspired a generation of dnb, garage and dubstep producers. originally released on detroits incognito label, this re issue on kevin saundersons (reese) own kms imprint and has been re mastered for 2014. contains the original, dub and accapella versions plus a whole host of rhythm tracks written by kevin saunderson on the b side for creative djs to play with.

when chateau flight was approached to participate to this live project of covers of terry riley, together with le cabaret contemporain, they immediatly said yes. it was the occasion to play great music from a majeur influence of them, and also to play it live with some great musicians. the live experience went so great that they decided to go in the mythical vogue studio (around paris), to record it. the idea was to have a full live take, no edits, to capture the magic of the improvisation. cabaret contemporain is 2 prepared double basses, 1 drummer, 1 guitar player, 1 prepared piano. chateau flight(i:cube and gilb-r) providing the electronics sounds and the mixdown here is the result.
