the x-man has been locked away in the detroit psychiatric hospital for the last 30 years. as his release date drew near ppu had a moment to sit down and talk with the man behind the mask. ppu - how did you end up here? xman - my music style, often described as aggressive funk, was deemed by the state of michigan too mental for the listening public. ppu - what does the x stand for? xman - x is an executioner. ppu - what do you plan to do after your release? xman - i am here to eliminate everyone in funk.

originally recorded in detroit, 1982 by the late danan potts a.k.a. superlife. at that time danan was hanging around the recording institute of detroit where juan atkins was training in production. danan was interested in atkins style of dance music and quickly recorded >go bananas<. bananas was released locally on southern sun records in hyper limited quantity, it is today one of the most sought after underground detroit techno recordings of all time.
the ppu label searched for this guy for years and as soon as they got a hold of the mysterious california gospel producer the first question was, why name your group shelve? >its not shelf, its shell-vee, for shelby!< ppu was finally able to locate shelby when releasing a record with michael soward (ppu-022), turned out shelby produced the title track >hes alive<. >this world< was recorded and mixed by dale >rambo< ramsey, who went on to work with some major hip-hop acts like ludacris, raekwon and the youngbloodz! today shelby hurns is still producing records and will be releasing his latest cd summer 2011. check!
southern florida, 1984. the sonarphonic sound was pioneered by james mccauley aka maggotron / dxj / basstech. originally produced for bound sound records in 1984, this is one of the earliest and rarest recordings from mccauley and marks the beginning of the underground miami bass electro movement. in the following years he recorded hundreds of tracks including >the bass that ate miami<, >temple of boom<, and >attack on the planet of bass<. maggotron is still active in the genre and is currently working on a new album. if you are unfamiliar with mccauleys musical adventure, let the sonarphonic be your guide. tip!!
in 1985 michael soward and shelby hurns set out to create the new gospel sound with their self-released album entitled >real love<. the lp was a progressive mix of synthesized gospel soul and spiritual funk. this heavenly blend proved to be visionary for their time and sounds so right today. ppu22 features three new edited versions from soward & hurns landmark debut, guaranteed to bless speakers worldwide. tip!
essential and unreleased material from marylands mr. mellow, this basement demo was multitracked and recorded by smallwood himself. it also features him on drums, bass, synth, rhythm ace, and vocals. this one man band laid down almost every one of his songs on reel-to-reel prior to paying for professional studio time. the lady disco demo is smallwoods favorite takebecause the back-up singer was lady disco herself. she went missing after george booked his session at sound studio maryland, and his sister had to sing her part. on the flip youll hear an alternate mix of roller coaster, recently remixed by smallwood from the original studio masters. tip!
following the success of the midnight express single >danger zone<, robbie m and terry patton continued to search for new sounds. over the next few years the duo would produce dozens of instrumental sketches. terry always recorded these backing arrangements to cassette tapes so they could easily listen to them later in the car. cruising the streets of rock island il, vocalist robbie m would write the additional melodies and lyrics.
long awaited lp debut from this oklahoma group, who recorded these tracks back in the 80s, but for whatever reason most of them never got released. especially check out the instrumental from >whos girl are you?< an incredible synth/disco track! a very good job has been done on the mastering, considering these tracks were mastered from an old cassette tape!tip!
get ready for an analog ride. these 80s multi tracks are all we have left from creative mind, crunch. hurricane katrina wiped out the home studio and master recordings. now back from the bayou, every struggling sound, tape flutter, and disco hiss are re released on vinyl, and sounding extra dirty.
time for another lo fi rider. 5 unreleased cassette demos from the founding members of midnight express, robbie m and terry patton. this volume includes the original demo groove for danger zone, along with 4 more raw uncut gems transferred direct to vinyl from the tapes. ppu did their best to restore the sound on these, but they were buried under 30 years of tape fuzz. this is the rawest synth funk preservation yet... and only on ppu records. tip!
