a bastion of magnetic style and mixing board finesse, honey dijon continues to exceed her bounds, pushing through from the underground of new york to become a cultural, global star. her classic follow-up to houze with seven david jnr, the provocative personal slave is unapologetic, hedonist and achingly cool. honey has teamed up with charles duff aka charles mccloud, who lends his seductively sulky tones for the vocal on the record. murky and mechanical, cowbell dinks and a percussive breakdown lift the mood, keeping the tracks feet firmly in the house bracket. consistently, honey’s productions piece together her familiar chicago jack with a contemporary new york edge. this track goes further in exploring that hybrid style, delivered with honeys signature lushness. a strong force in the us techno scene under his matrixxman moniker, charles duff appears again for remix duties on the dungeon dub, which as the name suggests is profoundly dark and moody, resonating highly with his regular slots at berghain. the drum machine mix hones in on the percussive work, playing with a visceral, hypnotic vibe that is so potent its almost dangerous. if this release is any indication of honeys intentions for this year, 2017 will see honey continue her ascension as a music icon.

needless to say this one s been in the pipeline for a while and we re super happy to announce it s imminent arrival. comprised of the duo of emmanuel corre and silvere letelier, nummer have surprised and impressed many with their fresh take on the last 20+ years of dance music. inspired by the deepest strains of detroit, chicago, new york and their native france the pair have tapped into something that few artists manage these days - an original style. this sprawling 2x12inch touches on many of these cornerstones but never apes anyone s sound or vibe, forging their own path into the cosmos and beyond. machine music with a beating heart is central to the second sight atmosphere and nummer s character as producers. this is the deepness.

dolphin dance is the second release by d. briggs on the brooklyn based -stray current- label. on this limited run of 300 hand-stamped copies briggs combines driving dance beats with rough analog synth tones to create a set tunes that will move the floor. the title track has also been remixed by wt label owner willie burns. on his remix, burns strips the track down to the bone and drenches it in reverb, giving it a darker mood and a pummeling melody.

having honed his sound on a string of feted self-released cassettes released on his own harsh riddims label - which has also put out everything from bizarro hip hop to gleaming synth pop - and dropped a hyped 12” released on the cgi imprint, the healthcare ep finds fit of body delivering his most accomplished work to date. five woozy original tracks jammed out on second hand drum machines, bass guitar, cheap mics and creaking synths, this is techno as it was first imagined, raw machine soul made for strange times and unknown futures.

two floor-smashing highlights from the gnarliest corner of the spectral sound library get a welcome reissue on the first limited addendum 12” to the dope jams nyc volume 1: 2005-2012 compilation. first up is futuristic acid banger “poison dart” by 2 am/fm, the double-headed beast of ann arbor’s d’marc cantu and james t. cotton. beginning with an eerie synth coiling endlessly around a shuffling, anxious beat, the track unexpectedly blasts off with one of the nastiest acid basslines since “washing machine.” commanding, otherworldly, and freaky to the core. on the flip, cotton flies solo and tosses listeners headfirst into his chaotic and terrifying “bizarre carnival.” pounding kicks, blown-out bass and frenzied synths relentlessly collide with one another, creating an endless nightmare of a world on the verge of machine-induced annihilation.

spatial cues is a series of split singles sounding out main(void)’s and kon janson’s shared musical space. operating out of berlin and london, the two artists join forces to showcase their mutual vision of techno music. cues001 starts off the series with two immersive yet driving tracks, both built upon breathing and soughing atmospheres that wrap themselves around clear-cut, straightforward rhythms. guided by bleepy accents, cues001 a takes you on a stormy 10 minute ride through subtly shifting layers of sound, revealing its hidden depths in two slowly climaxing breaks. steadily evolving towards its floating finale, cues001 b contrasts a mesmerising percussion pattern with a steaming machine sound that loses itself in endless feedback cascades.

a year after his extremely versatile debut ep for figure, viers comes out with another batch of tunes that again set him apart from his peers both in production value and creativeness. touching on the tropes of classic detroit techno, saxton presents a beautifully delicate opening track, rife with life from within the machines while still steadily thumping ahead. it’s the mix of this vital momentum together with a certain restraint, allowing each element to breath. so much that even the slightest adjuments cause maximum effectmetro, as felt on suitably titled stomper nothing changed where everything hits in exactly the right place. same goes for the incessant dialogue of tones on zehn, which sigha expands into a pensive piece, layering soothing washes of synths. not only an exceptional ep in its own right, figure 85 further cements viers as a skilled craftsman with seemingly endless imagination.

vol. 4 with more fantastic cosmic / ambient-ish / experimental tunes

folamour was responsible for one of the dreamiest, most colourful deep house records of recent times - the brilliant shakkei ep on all city so hopes are naturally high for this excursion on the producer s recently launched fhuo records. he kicks off proceedings with the thrillingly addictive very first touch, where dreamy pads and looped party samples cluster around a snappy, jazz-fuelled house groove, before ratcheting the energy levels up a notch or two via the rubbery slap bass, driving drum machine beats and warm rhodes chords of alerte a babylon. in between, you ll find pravis l estaque, a stomping deep house floor-burner blessed with some seriously good, jammed-out electric piano solos.

toby tobias can be found in the shadows of south london. this is his first offering for the esp institute. on side a, gravitator evolves slowly over ten minutes from a somber intro of supernatural sighs, pulsing machine feedback and techno squelches into an ethereal landscape peppered with dissonant fragments of synth. with side b’s right turn to nowhere , toby stretches out even further, flexing a tasteful programming of the 808 while taking the long road to a reverb-drenched crescendo of distortions and expansive string swells. after a prolific output of material for other quality labels around the world, toby tobias has undoubtedly re-focused his point-of-view upon his induction to the esp institute. these two songs will have you locking up your children at night.

hailing from the ruhr area in germany, the homewreckers have a long history to look back on. numerous projects have involved the three band members johannes ehmann, gregor pottmeier and krischan wesenberg in the past 20 years always meandering between the realms of jazz, blues, soul, house and techno. between the profound bags of djs and the shelves of audiophile heads. their unique sound spans from deep dancefloor oriented electronic music to film soundtracks that, amongst others, underlined the infamous productions of the artist harun farocki. confusion ep is an excerpt of their upcoming album machine kiss that sums up six years of research and work and melts the influence of more than 25 years of knowledge onto one record.

ashley woz westlake is back with a nod to the sounds that have inspired him. moving away from the moodier melodies of his more recent writing, new tracks celsius and grain mark an exploration into some new techniques and sounds. feeling inspired after listening to some old bits from the great terrance parker and kerri chandler, woz loaded a 909 into his rytm and a vox, bongos and chords into a sampler with the intention of working on his workflow and having some fun. the end product was celsius which was quickly snapped up by lobster boy and left woz needing a second track for the release. he wanted to roll with the similar theme of giving his take on an older sound, so using the same workflow on the drum machine and sampler he wrote a track heavily inspired by his love for electro.

as longitude is the illuminated brainchild of eva geist and laura odl. together they explore sonic waves in an exciting world full of spatial drum machine rhythms and sequenced riffs. some of those trips feel like earth bound rituals, while others seem to be nothing less than ceremonies of stratospheric magnitude.

spencer parker returns on his own imprint this march with a four-track track release as part two of the three part different shapes and sizes series. following on from the raw and stripped back house jam aesthetic as seen in part one, parker kicks off this techno release with size information a track with driving kicks, subtle atmospherics, and infectious panning percussion. next up is shape deviation, which hones in on a twisted 303 arpeggio and is saturated in white noise and backed up with entrancing drums, before shape fascination goes into full drum machine workout mode with off kilter 808 claps fuelled by a hypnotic synth bass line. size devotion rounds off the release with its raw and distorted kicks and simplistic yet effective mesmeric male vocal samples.

acker 52 sounds like an indiana jones themed pinball machine. the listener is the ball that shoots through the rhythmically clicking labyrinth of the apparatus. the rich bass lines act as the electromechanically controlled levers, the flippers that accelerate it and keep it going. the percussion is the spring-loaded mechanism that re-directs it to ever new levels. this exciting pinball game as accompanied by ethereal singing and mirage-like violin play that waft through the hot air of the desert. with a variety of remixes this release makes a perfect match for many different moments of a party.

blood money club traxx first offering comes from tempe-based affiliate jock club and comprises of four hennessy-fuelled drum machine workouts fit for the post-recession era. on the a-side jock club delivers two haunting club tools capable of invigorating any life expectancy reducing lock-in. the b-side starts off with an emotional slow jam, before veering into a ruthless collision of hi-fi shape and pain.

if you’re setting out on an epic voyage to the electronic disco universe, it pays to recruit an experienced pilot. when it comes to intergalactic musical fusion, few are quite as experienced as cosmic disco pioneer and noted dancefloor explorer daniele baldelli. produced alongside friend and regular studio partner dario piana, zero gravity cannily updates baldelli’s early ‘80s cosmic disco blueprint for the 21st century. we think that the ep contains some of his strongest music to date, with each of the three cuts offering subtle nods to the italian maestro’s original cosmic club ethos. a-side “infinity machine” expertly combines many of baldelli’s greatest musical inspirations into one mind-bending late night workout. underpinned by a druggy, arpeggio style bassline, the track rises and falls through waves of funk-rock guitars, crunchy clavinet lines and intertwined synthesizer solos. throw in jammed-out electric pianos, and you have a near perfect fusion of cosmic disco and blazed funk-rock. the producer’s long-held love of african rhythms surfaces on “if you drive”, where bold acid bass, ricocheting percussion hits and weightless chords combine beautifully with starry melody lines and vintage analogue synthesizer motifs. it’s afro-cosmic for the nu-disco generation. a fine ep is completed by “air lock”, in which baldelli and piana pepper a rubbery, electrofunk-influenced groove with cascading synthesizer melodies, swirling pads and a swathe of fuzzy, eyes-closed guitar solos. it’s bold and assertive, but also as otherworldly and stratospheric as you’d expect from a pioneer at the peak of his powers.

one half of laszlo dancehall with leon vynehall, christian piers returns to duskys 17 steps with three tracks of machine driven music aimed at the dancefloor. leading with the heavyweight techno of detachment, the package also includes the dark mechanical rhythms of expanse and drum workout strain, as well as trevinos stripped back dub techno interpretation of detachment.

fresh off of a pair of well-received eps on his recently-launched manhigh imprint, berlins highly respected techno auteur henning baer makes his first appearance on nonplus with 4 excellently crafted, saturated machine techno tracks on the idea of instinct. following on feelings suggested in the title, the ep opens with a pair of more contemplative pieces: the title track’s spare arrangement puts mechanical rhythmic drive behind its exploration of dusky electronic atmospheres, while the feeling of dna is both brighter and slightly pacier, its hypnosis deriving from the pads and synthesizer sequences that circle the drums. ccc ii takes a darker approach to a similar idea, this time with the suggestion of polyrhythms in the distant and heavily-treated percussive elements circling in the background behind uneasy ambience. it builds to the closer spiritual quest, where overlaid rhythms in 3 and 4 are not easily reducible and create the tension at the track’s centre driving it to its conclusion.

grebenstein is a producer, dj and visual artist living in kassel, germany. after playing in several bands as a drummer and guitarist he made his solo-debut with a 4-track ep on the regis helmed label downwards records in november 2014. the gloss 4 track ep for horo comes after his downwards records follow up strong, proud, stupid, & superior with seefried was released in october 2016. title track gloss centres on percussive crescendos and pensive guitar layers, while self and its version stretch this effect out into a grinding, slow motion introspection. loss closes the ep with serrated drum machine blasts punctuating feedback contortions. the tension throughout the ep is palpable, with the shaping of the tension providing the substance of his signature style. non club tracks for open minded clubs.

“mirror test” conjures that rare mood between darkness and elation, contemplation and celebration, and drives it home with an infectious, jacking rhythm section which recalls the late-80s ny club music of boyd jarvis and paul simpson, and labels like easy street and fourth floor, but imbues the sound with a toughness and precision only possible today. analog synth figures, glassy and angular, ricochet around the track, trading jabs with funky snare work and robotic, stabby chord patterns to create a hook-laden machine groove which demands repeated listening.
the record’s b-side feature, “replace yourself,” is the subtler, dreamier, more futuristic of the two. unmistakably urban with its swinging, bottom-heavy groove and strange, architectural chord work, it seduces and transports. “replace yourself” dares you to do exactly that.

spring is in the air and matteo pepe, aka uabos, is taking away that winter chill with four tracks of house warmth and machine funk. acid bars float on crisp claps for the uplifting -mystic force-. the italian keeps the floor stoked with the sample strewn grooves of -copacabana- before the synths take over with the lush chords of -city woods-.-karmic souls- closes, meandering notes bend and shimmer on clean percussion for an exotic climax to an ep of ambitious analogue delights.

london label spinning plates steps up for round three with the lesser known talents of nekhsa throwing down some crucial electro styles.132 breaks is an utterly minimalist slice of drum machine funk, and completely infectious with it, while some jan works a cheeky bassline rub into the sparse soundscape. back in 4 and bidniz are both just as reduced in their construction, but then its up to dj spider to weigh in with a pair of remixes that find the new york producer on savage form. his version of bidniz is a dense, cloying workout loaded with sinister sound design, while some jan turns into an apocalyptic techno destroyer in his capable hands.

marvin horsch debuts on berlins film with an ep of exquisitely produced, cinematic electronica. the cologne based producer develops the colourful house found on previous work for the dorfjungs la-bel, with three playful compositions that draw as much on jazz and krautrock as more contemporary strains of alternative electronic music. opener omnisession 1 marries a beautifully shifting organ with live drum work before segueing into the glorious softness of sun after rain, a rich synth solo drenched in tape hiss. closer negobebo 2 wraps up the ep an energetic, looping recording replete with staccato drum-machine strikes and warm, wet verbs carrying a spirited lead across its six minute duration. an honest record, open and expertly executed fukushisha is an admirable addition to the film cata-logue.

editions mego is proud to present the latest opus from legendary british composer, actor, sound designer and all round fine human simon fisher turner. giraffe is a new major work which blurs the lines between sound design and song, machine severity and narrative sentimentality. subtitled living in sounds and music giraffe take the listener through a vast journey where an abstract clacking of unknown origin rubs up against a melancholic electronic sequence. life sounds were captured with a portable hard disc recorder and i-phone and appear alongside contemporar sound design. emma smith provides the narrative on slight smile whilst electronic machines grind amongst background industrial klang in mud larks .save as revolves around a beautiful simple piano motif which soon folds into an unnerving field recording and drone combination.
