land of confusion is one of the most seminal chicago acid house records. originally released in 1987 on bam bam s westbrook imprint and produced by the legendary armando gallop it marked the start of a recording career that would make him a household name among house and techno aficionados. to say land of confusion is raw is an understatement, it consists of a handful of elements but its impact when played is incendiary. armandos tb-303 acid lines sound possessed and unruly while the primitive drum machine patterns stagger around the track giving it a feeling of out of control urgency, a truly lo-fi piece of crazy chicago acid that was popular with many djs in chicago(including ron hardy at the muzic box) and around the world and continues to be influential today. an essential record for any discerning house or techno fan.

nick curly s first truesoul release is outstanding. this collection of three track s encapsulates both nick curly s and truesoul s ethos and moulds them into a driving house machine. first off, crossroads uses a delicate melody that is under-lined with lashings of driving drums. trust shuffles along with it s rolling percussion and bass line whilst indigo child is just as funky and will get any dance floor fired up.

three is the number, basement toolz the titel. once again rat life records is taking mickey on a night out to the sewer. here are two tracks made by credit 00 with a borrowed tr 909 drum machine. side a is called korg the groove, as the title already reveals, its inspired by a classic detroit techno cut. can you tell which one it is? on the flip side you will find 909ish, one drum machine and one synthesizer, which is not much but all you need and more, plus there is extra noise on the clap to amplify your face slapping pleasure.

romansoff is the man behind raw tools, a guy who loves to dj and arrange parties in and around bucharest, he is starting to stretch his wings further afield. with a release on machine records inc being his first for another label, romansoff delivered 3 tracks of dancefloor goodness to the ruff draft inbox that made me jiggle in my chair. it was when i got up and started to dance like my dad, and my son started to laugh and point, that i knew it was a winner. i contacted romansoff who suggested we should have a game of stone, paper, scissors to decide the track order

on jupiter masterdrive the london synth and drum duo further hone their blend of jazz, prog and electronica within the confines of brevity demanded by the 7 format. recorded direct-to-tape over a few heady sessions, these tracks bear the palpably unfolding, organic beauty of improvisation and live recording while conveying ever deeper levels to the pairs musical and artistic vision. the band recorded these pieces in constant experimentation with their tape machine, trying different approaches and techniques for each track this is a small glimpse into the process and a tantalising sample from an expansive body of recordings.

after the success of their first release charmin are back with another high quality wax. this offering showcases the talents of florist and close friend of the imprint tilman, all pressed up on heavyweight vinyl with a lovingly designed cover. the ep kicks off with �proof nothing� which is a statement of intent. deep, churning piano chords overlaid with delayed vocal samples all underpinned with a solid beat and deep bass. next up �raw� does exactly what it says on the tin. this is a stripped down thumper with crunchy claps and an infectious groove. �once again� has a looser, more percussive feel to it with machine gun snares rattling off overt the top of a killer chord line. bringing things to a close is �mood swings� which builds brooding atmospheres and eerie vocal snippets. all in all this ep carries on the good work of this exciting new label. charmin continues its journey to bring you uncompromising, underground house music of the highest order.

a lot of water has passed under the bridge since the release of etienne jaumet�s night music, dating from october 2009. his hypnotizing music and enchanting live performances put him directly on the map. it�s just him who is in control of his ship. he moves without complexes from his saxophone to his drum machine (his beloved tr 808) while turning knobs modulating synths, and sending his voice through an echo.la visite, etienne�s brand new album, more luminous and jazzy than its predecessor, has been composed and produced within a two month period in the versatile studio. it became a piece of introspection, mentally as well as physically. in the title track, for which flop wrote the text, we hear etienne travelling through the inside of a body, fantastic voyage style.it is always surprising to see a record taking shape. etienne would arrive at the studio without any precise idea in head, approaching his work rather intuitively. he works standing up, which brings a very different energy than being seated behind a computer polishing up every detail. he is in total mastery of his set-up, ready to capture that short-lived moment of true creation. the only use a computer has for him, is to record his experiments - afterwards being mixed by jerome caron (blackjoy).in between night music and la visite, etienne has not been lazy. not only has he done numerous collaborations (amongst others with joakim, richard pinhas, francois & the atlas mountain) and picked up djing, he has also recorded a new zombie zombie album (rituels d�un nouveau monde) with cosmic neman, as well as the soundtrack loubia hamra. and he worked with artist felicie d estienne d orves on the installation satori. at this very moment, etienne and his saxophone are still part of the tour of james holden.
