bastardo electrico is a techno night and label based in cork, ireland. it’s run by jamie behan, a veteran of the scene and one half of flexure alongside stephen mahoney. both have been djing since the mid-90’s, but flexure is a relatively new hardware-based project that sounds like a mashup of techno, acid, electro and chicago house. shadow puppets is flexure’s debut ep, a collection of unhinged machine bangers fans of tinfoil’s and on the hoof’s weirdness will likely appreciate.

device control is jake reifs new solo production outlet which draws equally from the pools of early wax trax and medusas with the hybrid pit jack of early farris or rush. machine made yet with a soul, all four cuts are for the true hyper jackers on the floor, tested and recomended. born in new york and spending his formative years in the mid-west, jake reif has served time amongst some of the best, producing alongside both mystic bill as well as reade truth releasing well recieved 12s on rong music and a break out remix on snuff trax in recent years. back in the day you could catch jake clocking hours working at sonic groove records among a motley crew of heavy hitters whilst honing his talents.

up first is get enough, seven minutes of seductive techno that has an almost machine-gun like disco synth firing across the groove. it is a rumbling peak time track with real force and energy that will bring any floor to life. the title track, toleranz, is a gritty and stripped back basement cut with dry hits and burrowing acid bass that takes you deep into the night. cobra then proves this pair have real breadth in the studio and is a barrel chested house cut with more big hits, rib rattling bass and incendiary techno hi hats that really get you on your toes. remixing are the tech duo of pleasurekraft, whose releases on octopus and mood records have won them plenty of dj and dancing fans. they layer in some dark melodies to sq80 and build it steadily before allowing the militant drums and crisp snares to explode and drive you and the whole club forwards.

nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie. thats how belgian dj producer boogie belgique (aka oswald cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producers forte. this is pleasingly evident on volta, the latest boogie belgique album for the cold busted label. jungle law gives a glimpse into boogie belgiques sonic palette. tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. album opener go slow shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. its a beautiful concoction, and boogie belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

long awaited repress of this amazing masterpiece as very limited white vinyl edition. what happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine? when light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? those are the questions that johannes heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold. ‘black light’ sees the german techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. heil chooses the words of fellow futurist nikola tesla to set the stage of the black light story >black is the true face of light, only we do not see this<. track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the figure and cocoon regular conjures throughout the album. everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. battling the current, johannes heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. if the pictures painted on >black light< are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. the machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. its the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. its pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose. provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. the impression that >black light< leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, johannes heil shows no sign of slowing down.

dj support comes from ben ufo, jon k and hodge. semtek returns with his first work since 2012, when he contributed 12inches to world unknown, awkward movements and in plain sight. in the meantime the cambridge-born, bristol-based producer and dj has been hard at work running his label don t be afraid, bringing through talent including mr beatnick and mgun. bad teeth consists of nothing more complicated than two complementary tracks for the dancefloor, inspired by bleep n bass, jungle and two-step. the title track rolls moody synths, metallic stabs and offbeat drums into a rugged uk house joint. jon of worcester twists similar elements around a broken groove, cutting between drum machine and breakbeats. both tracks feature rolling basslines tuned for maximum soundsystem pressure.

varg marks the start of his expansive nordic flora series with four tracks of downcast euphoria, fitted with enough bump to make you mistake the smoke machine for a riot control agent.

new years deal - another genre bending release on the healing company. modern sounding wave vibes and a great break beat loaded track on the flip that wont do harm to any good dancefloor!. -an ancient puzzle of mystification and nostalgia, waiting for the listener to unravel the mystery, but never offering enough clues to do so. while an ever-growing mass of synth layers and bulbous basslines flow across these two tracks, it never comes off as too clean, instead relying on the occasional detune or bitcrush to remind you it s being made by humans, not a machine.-

antlers mulm has been sending his melancholy songs and soundscapes into the world for many years now… some years ago one song was featured on the “radio resistencia” compilation (et001) and finally there is this 7 inch on enfant terrible… the two tracks are coming from the last album “touring the moon bog” which was released on cd and tape earlier this year… both tunes featured on vinyl here are the most up-tempo and rhythm driven ones from that album… recommended to fans of solitude fx but also those who are into new order… it is all melancholy, dreamy and catchy… what else could you wish for?

burnski and jon woodall s constant sound label continues to reach skywards following the formers essential dna album, welcoming the ever-reliable laura jones and stephen brown into the mix with a collaborative effort that matches club precision with machine soul in equal measure. -crystalline- works around detroit motifs to great effect, while -concave- ramps up the swing factor for a spacey number that gets fancy with the fx. -pv- too does a fine job of making the synths ping around the mix with a jammed-out feel, while endian delivers a remix of -nothing lost- that leans on berlin techno dynamics while injecting some colour into the situation.

back in the days at the west-saxon highlands there was a missile, which marked the starting point. when credit 00 saw the legendary rocket rise on tetris’ final screen, it was the first time he became aware of electronic music at all. since then it actually hasn’t changed that much. he keeps pushing that buttons that belong to the impressive pool of music machines towered up next to his bed. after moving to dresden in 2000 to study fine arts, his passion for synthesizers and drum machines got nurtured through visits of dresden’s club-canalisation. he quickly made himself a name as a dj, who is just doing his own thing and got popular for that reason. as a part of the idealfun-crew he started hosting parties always in the twilight zone between legal and illegal. this led to “robo dance”, dresden’s only and (also for some other reasons) best electro club night featuring guests like dmx krew, luke eargoogle or imatran voima. the track credit made with randy barracuda of imatran voima has probably been created some time after the show. apparently, randy was not in good shape anymore and so “lebensraum” unmistakably bears credit’s hallmarks. for his own music he’s inspired by cannibal movies, number theory and birds. still, his music is not easy to pigeonhole. after all, he loves synth wave, electro, afro, kraut, kosmische, disco, italo, miami bass and other proto stuff – a lot of machine music.
