having been approved by labels as respected as underground quality and autoreply, brazilian producer apoena returns to his allnite label with yet more of that pure and heartfelt deep house music for those who like it classic and classy. i know yo- punches and tickles in all the right places with its dreamy keys, soulful vocal lick and rock solid drum lines, while tristeza nao tem fim heads into even more blissed-out territory with its rolling groove and heavy-lidded chords. lost has a solid bottom end thrust that wouldnt sound out of place on a mike huckaby record, and mama loves you brings more of that sweet, laid back, feel good feeling to finish up this impeccable collection of house jams.

dubfire and miss kittin have scored another big hit in the form of their second collaboration ride, the follow-up to the much-loved anthem exit. now, many destroyed dancefloors later and they’re unleashing a big pack of remixes to sit alongside their two original versions. solomun may best known for big melodies and hooks, but his remix boldly displays his affinity for heads down techno. a beast of a track, it centers around ticking percussion and pulsating synth delays with a throbbing low end. minimal in approach, maximal in aesthetic, it’s a no-nonsense groove. matthew dear dons his audion guise to remind us how instrumental he was in formulating that oddball techno sound a decade ago, making good use of the vocals in the heady breakdowns and matching them with unsettlingly wavering synth sirens and an almost tribal bass stomp. it’s full of atmospheric touches and pulls off a big room feel without resorting to cliches. depeche mode, erasure and yazoo legend vince clarke is a personal hero of dubfire’s, making his appearance on this package all the more of a special, rare treat. his chunky house groove is decked out with rolling congas, electro arpeggios and a yearning, bluesy guitar lick. french star djedjotronic has himself remixed depeche mode, and his version rounds off the package with throbbing low end, harrowing synths, techy percussion and brooding reese bass swells. with four very different mixes to choose from, this is an immense package that is set to cause havoc on dancefloors worldwide for some time to come.

newcastle-based producer traela makes his first appearance on wax with this on-point work out for hhatri, a london based label who have previously been happily working with the likes of soichi terada. there is definitely a sense of feel-good optimism and kinked drum programming hovering over this ep, especially on hanging over a river. you know i can hide also stands out with its strafing bass lick and spacescraping synth rolls, but the script gets flipped for ep closer uyokuthola as tribal percussion meets with an ambient atmosphere for a most engrossing end result.

our latest looking for mushrooms ep comes to us from a collaboration between long time dirt crew resident tigerskin and gifted jazz pianist and composer grambow. we first heard from grambow when his fluid key stylings featured on tigerskins faint in 2015. the title track is a suspenseful and moody journey, lead by live double bass from feature artist das eb. building in intensity with tigerskins warm production and steady percussive instrumentation until grambows live lead on a gritty synth growls in over the top. a true modern electronic classic as far as we are concernred. tsukiji is a playful deep house groover. balmy tuned percussion and shaken highs roll along under the light hearted piano which cruises along throughout the whole tropically touched endeavour. this track has party written all over it! octocat is a tougher italo disco tainted work out, tightly programmed live and analogue percussive elements push along, while wailing keys lick over a tenacious grunting bass. you can really taste and feel the long studio sessions the guys had to compose this great track. it is so much more than generic dance music. red fox is a divine culmination of the pairs compositional prowess and dance music knowhow. a cinematic and spirited house track that glides and glistens via delicate piano, plucky percussive riffs, bright strings and woodwinds. we are very honoured to release this outstanding musical release by tigerskin and grambow.

bass culture reach that magnificent milestone of 50 releases with an extra special ep from someone who has become part of labels inner circle, the infallible mr g. set up in 2009 by paris stalwart djulz, bass culture records has maintained a consistently high level of music, crossing from techno into house and back again, always with a focus on quality over quantity. mr g delivers two special gems from his arsenal of weaponary to mark the 50th bsss culture release. the first, * transient* sees mr g in contemplative mood, taking a studied approach with this deep, soulful cut. softened pads are drizzled over a punchy low end, with tough, crisp beats supporting a stirring vocal which urges everybody to get up on their feet. the nineties organ lick gives it an almost sorrowful feel, and those pads continue to takes us up to the skies. a beauty. on the flip, * crumple zone* goes straight for the jugular with a driving b-line, alarming stabs and finger-clicking percussion to get that head nodding. combined with garbled, hypnotic vocal clips, its a mesmerising, eyes down cut for the late night heads. towards the latter part of the track, a naughty riff comes in and adds another layer of sleaze to proceedings. and there you have it, mr g proves yet again why he is such a all-round don and bass culture celebrates 50 releases with panache.

straight out of the ukraine comes io (mulen) aka aleksandr voznichenko, a man whose back catalogue includes releases on labels such as rejected, eklectisch and area remote to name but a few. now he links up with one of paris’ premier labels, run by one of paris’ premier crews – apollonia. with one solid track and a classy remix from danish young gun malin génie, this is another surefire winner from apollonia. ‘to the unknown’ kicks things off with a steady build up. shrouded in a hazy mist it draws you to its understated groove, io turns in a very considered production that evolves at a slow yet utterly gripping pace. the energy levels rise like the tide of the ocean, engulfing you before you know it. io’s dexterity and cunning ability to keep the listener engaged manifests itself here, bomb! on the flip side, malin genie steps in to give ‘to the unknown’ a new lick of paint and what we get is a jazzy, minimal rework with a jaunty skip in its step and a wicked bassline.

opener equilibrium two from buitendijk is a perfectly streamlined and serene bit of spaced out, hypnotic techno. gentle synth pulses roam about the airwaves, left and right, up and down, as ethereal pads glow behind. it s heady dancing music, whilst liem s contact is also perfectly aimed at both head and heel. it is full of lick synth pulses that bubble and boil as watery droplets and ticking hits also colour the most subliminal groove. closer this is all you need is a more textured, frazzled cut with frosty lines and rickety pads working you into a trance. rich drums and clever bass filtration add dynamics and tension and so like everything else here the end result is hugely captivating.

through the spirit realm is refracteds first lp to date, and it comes canadas excellent silent season, a home to rasmus hedlund, quantec, and asc, among others. enter the jungle quickly gives a picture of what s to come thanks to the track s abstract blend of animal sounds, a myriad of noises which is swallowed up the warm and dubby swings of the jungle is thick, a donato dozzy kinda lick. the whole lp follows a similar string of thought, one that binds stripped back techno together with deep ambience and slow moving plates of drone, the ritual begins is simply hypnotic and we could keep it on for hours on loop. its tribalism at its most cutting-edge, and an altogether fantastic debut performance from this growing techno personality.

the dance is the result of a long lasting musical love affair between kontra-musik s ulf eriksson and sebastian mullaert (aka minilogue). as most love affairs, it started off as an exciting experiment: ulf would play records and sebastian would bring out his music gear and play a live set. as they were touring with this live concept, their sounds started to really integrate, and after one especially fine night at trouw, amsterdam, ulf and sebastian decided it was time to conceive the dance. once the decision was taken, everything else came naturally. the dance was to be recorded live, in one take, at kontra-musik s home field inkonst, malmo, sweden.
