moscow records close 2016 with a fantastic 3-track ep from berlin imports roustam and tolga fidan. this being their first outing together, the pair deliver a high quality, intelligent journey through minimal house and techno. the record opens with brodsky beat, a groovy, dance floor-focused track. lively percussion and tight bass communicate perfectly with the hope-filled lead to build tension throughout. the omega variant on the a2 has a much more abstract feel. broken beats and skippy percussion play back and forth with deep, spacey hooks and a peculiar synth, giving the listener a sense of mystery. finally, growing up is just a phase is a calming 14 minute trip that uses the entirety of the b side to tell a story of reassurance and calm. laid-back rhythms, guitar samples, relaxed vocals and a wandering synth line work together to form the perfect warmup track.

the extraordinary prolongation of sound jerked polly’s pretty head away from her work at the calibration machine. today’s jobs had seen her at her thorough and meticulous best but as afternoon melted easily into evening, these latest reverberations meant she’d no longer be able to focus to the level required. her boss had just dropped the bomb. as her ear drums filtered the noise, the technician’s bright mind was flooded with delight, her eyes no longer felt dry and tight with concentration, she was caught riding the crest of a massive wave of admiration. sitting her specs on the desk and pushing herself off the comfortable heat of her work stool, miss filla let the soundwaves pull her to her feet and carry her off to the main source of the captivating music. in honour of dixon avenue basement jams spending four years at the forefront of the global electronic music scene a new release was planned to shake the foundation to the very core. techno wizard big miz had been charged with delivering the goods and by the gods, the glaswegian had cracked it! he’d created, not just new tunes, but a whole new fucking genre. polly could feel the vibrations pulsating through every part of her curvaceous body as she sashayed along to the seductive beat.

mono junk’s cult label dum records is back with a new five track various artists ep that again packs a vital punch. he appears himself along with some fellow legends of the scene. first up, morpholgy is a consistent performer who has continued to serve up quality electro since 2009 and here serves up a hot new piece. ‘vector plant’ is busy and industrial, slick and metallic as it unfolds and burrows deep into your veins. then comes the a2, irwin berg featuring freestyle man (aka finnish moodmusic boss sasse aka klas lindblad) with a track made in 1995 and never released before. this pair worked together and made a cult electro record for sähkö recordigs in 1998 and this one is just as impactful. it is frosty and frazzled, slow motion but high impact and full of distorted lines and heavy drums. next is mr velcro fastener who were the first kings of electro to come out of finland and between 1999 and 2006 were famous all over the world. their brand new cut ‘almost there’ is a deep one that is riddled with bleeping melodies and has smeared chords bringing a sci-fi feel. then it is mono junk’s turn to dive into the vaults with an unreleased track from 2005. ‘feeling or destroy’ is a physical number with crashing hits and snaking, gurgling bass that is dark and dystopian. last of all comes irwin berg with mono junk as new york city survivors. says the dum boss, “our unreleased track here was made after the new york city survivors – static light cd 2002” and it is a turbo charged track with screwed up grinding bass, icy hi hat rhythms and menace in its grooves.

rothmans are back with their first release of 2016 and who better to bring in the new year than italian electropsycho s dj rocca & daniele baldelli. of course this record would have to pay homage to an italian great and who better than 1982 world cup hero marco tardelli. first up on the ep is a synth funk journey called kratos. rocca goes full on here and doesent hold back as he takes us on a journey of synth wizardry and classic italo beats. up next is an another original from rocca called fonk 400 another track that could have been plucked starigt out of the golden age of italo disco, again rocca is pulling no punches here. the ep is rounded off in spectacular fashion, just like marco tardellis famous world cup final celebration we have nothing short of genius with daniele badlellis electropsychomix of kratos. baldellie doing what he does best and taking us too another level yet again.

the unrelenting force that is hot creations often acts as a breeding ground for raw talent. this next release does just that with four ‘hot jams’ from upcoming artists lee walker, pete dorling, neil parkes and greeko. first up, young producer lee walker from middlesbrough makes his debut on hot creations delivering ‘that little ditty’, which takes hold with a deeply intoxicating bassline, prominent hi-hats and punchy stabs that build to a frenzied climax. shooting onto the scene in 2015 with his off-the-cuff edit of dj deeon’s ‘freak like me’, which played by the likes of marco carola, dixon and loco dice, soon gained over 1 million hits on youtube and was finally picked up by defected records. having featured on ‘hot summer jams’ on the label back in 2014, essex dj and producer pete dorling is back with another killer track. ‘manyana’ drives with a heavy bassline as tribal vocal cuts are played throughout. other releases can be seen on the likes of viva music, resonance productions and nofitstate. also appearing on the same ‘hot summer jams’, neil parkes is back on board the label with ‘peil narkes.’ a swinging bassline sets the groundwork as layers of moody synths roll out over punchy hats. since his first release on metroline limited, neil has spread his wings releasing on labels such as madtech, leftroom limited and underground audio.

lord of the isles, a.k.a. neil mcdonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. the esp institute has always wholeheartedly believed in neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had in progress’. there are two types of artists. one internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. the other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. the art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. lord of the isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world. neil is simply prolific. he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “in waves”. the title speaks to neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener. ahead of the album’s release, we are proud to share with you the single ‘weh-in’, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. this lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled ‘pik’, as well as a big room rave remix by esp institute resident ian blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.

for those of you wondering what adesse versions was doing at our heist boiler room this summer in london, the answer is here. the “push it along” ep for heist is adesse versions first appearance on our label and features 4 stunningly raw and warm originals, and an amazing remix by new york’s ambassador of funk: ge-ology, together with multi-instrumentalist marc de clive-lowe on keys. after having released numerous records for jackmaster’s numbers, local talk and toy tonics, we’re happy to welcome adesse versions to the heist family. when he sent us his demo’s we had the tough job to choose the right tracks, cause there were just too many. the selection on the “push it along ep” features what we feel are his purest work up to date. with only a small amount of elements, he manages to create such a big and warm sound, finding a great balance between gritty percussion, rich analog synths and funky sampling work.

having originally surfaced on creme organization back in 2002, luke eargoggle and ronnie johansson s monkeyshop project is an intermittent treat that offers the best of warm synth-led electronic disco. on their second outing for ali renault s vivod label (after the excellent escape from the mental zoo ep in 2014) the pair bring yet more of that addictive, utopian dance magic on this new record. -island of love- is indeed a romantic club burner with smatterings of vintage synth pop in its bones, while -heartbreak- takes a more overtly italo direction and sounds just as strong with it. obergman then takes -island of love- to task with a respectful remix that shines a few different synth lines and beat patterns through the same fuzzy prism.

african scream contest’ is the third release by the analog africa label. the project initially took off in august 2005 when label owner and vinyl collector samy ben redjeb arrived in cotonou, benin, “without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records - what i found in the process cannot really be described in words-. this first trip was followed by eight more to the region. thirty months and few thousand records later analog africa proudly presents this 14-track compilation. redjeb conducted 16 interviews in various cities in benin and togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene for the 44 pages booklet which also features many rare photographs directly received from the artists. delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 70s benin and togo and experience the african scream contest. very, very limited copies in, and this might notcome in anymore.... tip!

Æ is the third part of bjarki triptych of lps to be released this year. Æ is a particularly icelandic form, pronounced “i” in english, bjarki thinks it just looks good. here it is a selection of music that is at its core quite simple, with restrained instrumentation, made on hardware and features a selection of older works and the most recent produced just weeks ago. bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dance floor tracks he doesn’t seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrates very well. his music is at times cinematic and there’s a story behind each track. bjarki’s music always has something to do with him personally, but he’d rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets.

after 20 years as a dj and several releases on labels just like anthony rother´s datapunk, dave clarke´s whitenoise or co-labs with gez varley from lfo, frank kusserow took a longer break from the active electronic music scene. in the meantime he produced tons of new tracks that result in his new and vinyl only imprint sprow recordings.
