professor rhythm is the production moniker of south african music man thami mdluli. throughout the 1980’s, mdluli was member of chart-topping groups taboo and cjb, playing bubblegum pop to stadiums. mdluli became an in-demand producer for influential artists (like sox and sensations, among many others) and in-house producer for important record companies like eric frisch and tusk. during the early ’80s, mdluli projects usually featured an instrumental dance track. these hot instrumentals became rather popular. fans demanded to hear more of these backing tracks without vocals, he says, so mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985 as professor rhythm. he got the name before the recordings began, from fans, and positive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to invest himself in a full-on solo project. it was the era just before the end of apartheid and house music hadn’t taken over yet. there wasn’t instrumental electronic music yet in south africa. as the ’80s came to a close, that was about to change.

by now, the world is familiar with the extensive works of monsieur dimitri from paris. his prowess as a globetrotting dj and taste-maker for over 20+ years, his reputation for the finer things in life, his sartorial style and of course most importantly his infamous remixes and disco edits. isn’t it odd that until now, there hasn’t been an official home for the man’s stellar reworks? it just doesn’t make any sense. this is exactly the reason that he has decided to set up this brand new venture - le edits records. naturally, a high standard of quality is present with all le edits releases across the board - from sourcing 100% virgin vinyl used for pressing to the mastering through tape, to the beautifully crafted and designed tip-on sleeves that were popular with record companies in the 1960’s and 1970’s, to the wonderfully imagined graphic design that adorns said sleeves - dimitri has overseen every aspect of this, his first label.
what about the music? we hear you ask? well, simply put, only the finest disco reworks are to be released on le edits. fans will be treated to dim’s special versions of classics and rarer than rare tracks, all lovingly re-touched and mixed from the reels and master tapes each time, fully sanctioned and created in conjunction with the artists, rights holders and above board distribution. 100% official and 100% essential.

aiby returns to vizual with an amazing ep, albeit without the noise. this solo project is deep, dark and freaky and showcases aiby’s love for vintage gear. yet there’s nothing old about these tracks — aiby’s sound is fresh and forward looking with hard driving beats that have just the right amount of wiggle. these tracks sound great played loud and are perfect for deep and dirty late nites. a forthcoming iz & diz remix of “you need a freak” will round out the project quite nicely.

sumerian fleet is a trio formed by dutch producers alden tyrell and mr pauli, joined by zarkoff after their 2010 debut ep. their second ep came out in 2012 followed by their debut album ‘just pressure’ on dark entries in 2014. sumerian fleet have returned to release their sophomore lp ‘pendulum’ of all new material as well as a remixed version of “this game has no name” from zarkoff’s other band, fffc.

delsin records inertia series is back with a powerful four tracker from yan cook. the producer from ukraine has also released delsin s main label and associated ann aimee, as well as planet rhythm and cooked. he makes straight up techno that arrests your attention and does just that again here. toucan is first and is a spangled, underwater techno track with gurgling lines wrapping round shuffling percussion and insistent drums. it s one to get into your head, while puffin is more physical, with more warped synths and paddy drums woven together into a fluid, rippling groove that never lets up. the drums on dialogue are deep and land with real resonance while dubby chords rattling out to the horizon. last of all flamingo is the most manic of the lot, with hi speed synths and booming drums all coming together to make for powerful, sub shaking and room filling techno madness.

kicking things off on the sleazy tip is -be with you,- a mid-tempo funk number that carries an irresistible vibe, bumpin moog bassline and a chug that is sure to inspire more than one dancefloor to do the hustle. taking things a bit deeper is -i love you,- with it’s hypnotic chords, brooding sub-bass and twirling groove.
flip the disc over to catch -love so fine,- which lightens things up a tad thanks to a shuffling rhythm and layers of chords and soulful vocals. ep closer, -whenever you’re around- amps things up with a heavy dose of 80’s chunk and funk… serious business to get the party all hot and sticky.

poker flat label boss and genuine dance music legend steve bug teams up with langenberg for this excellent two track ep. langenberg has released an unfathomable number of dancefloor fillers under various monikers on labels such as drumpoet community, mule, ovum or styrax leaves and recently released his debut album central heated house on dessous. langenberg is also one half of the project ribn. chord cluster has summer anthem written all over deep yet euphoric, spacy yet danceable, and ultimately a deeply emotive piece of house music that will bring smiles to faces all year. the rhythm track is tight yet remains loose and funky, while the pads and synths dip into just the right amount of acid to keep the ravers lost in the moment. the teaze treads similar ground arpeggiated pulses lead the arrangement, while a chicago influenced groove brings a shuffle to proceedings the joy in the track is evident it s clear the guys were having a lot of fun in the studio.

having given us a taster of things to come back in september 2016, with the pressing matters single, the cyclist returns to hypercolour with a brand new, full length album. and as the title suggests, sapa inca delirium leans heavily on south american mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that the eleven-track album paints so well across its various tempos and rhythms. from the tropical burst of mood setting opener, go back to the steamy and pacey percussive flow of inhale/exhale which features regular collaborator tanaya harper on vocals, the cyclist’s fourth long player is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. antiexist, with its down-tempo rolling snare fills and ethereal gregorian chanting segues effortlessly into a blind girl drinks ayawaska, a suitably discordant and hallucinogenic skit that ensures the album flows into the more rhythmic cuts like skateboarding in the jungle and mirrors (the second album cut to feature harper on vocals). even the traditional jazzier vibes of when we all break down featuring joni are kept rugged and boisterous, with heavyweight bending bass, choppy breakbeats and fx’d ambience amongst the smooth jazzy chords and sweet vocal delivery. sapa inca delirium is one of those albums that will reward on repeat listen, such is the diversity of style on show here, and the detailed and wide eyed curiosity offered up across the long players fifty three minutes.

disco fruit s sublabel continues to turn out smooth and slick deep, funky house, and this time around tonbe is on hand with the goods to get the people grooving. broken heart features rachel on vocals and some sweet saxophone, hitting the spot just right for universally appealing house music. street groove is a more forthright, clubby affair where the drums take the lead and the keys lock into a loopy late night roll. feel so good features some more choice vocal turns with urgent melodic hooks, and then something jazzy swoops in at the end with some proper new jersey heat to get your body popping.

forgot 001 is the debut release from london based record label forgot. the compilation is comprised of four tracks by four different artists: harry orso, aka ratomagoson, was last year picked up by gilles peterson’s future bubblers project and has gone on to drop a succession of well received releases on labels such as twosixtysix, polyop and tru thoughts. forgot residents hoffy and joe s both come from beat-making backgrounds while phillip russel aka pila boasts an impressive catalog of material online. since its release campaign launched earlier this year, the forgot 001 compilation has received a wealth of positive feedback from a number of revered and respected djs such as dom servini, adam scrimshire and david hanke aka renegades of jazz. the release gained considerable airplay during the summer: dom servini on soho radio, risha on radar radio, selassie tbc & amy frenchum on worldwide fm, toshio maatsura on tokyo moon and adam scrimshire on balamii radio.

x-coast helps to launch brand new label underthesea. the new york-based artist delivers three fresh original cuts complemented with a remix by berlin’s versatile talent borrowed identity. the ep presents equal parts of groove and energy characterised by x-coast s 90’s rave inspirations with a pulsating swell combined with seductive female vocals just like a mermaid’s allure. on the flip-side, borrowed identity illustrates his stripped down rhythms for a well-rounded 12-inch.

london based disco outfit faze action team up with celebrated anglo/brazilian artist, nina miranda for proto house crossover. faze action have always managed to take different musical traditions and blend them to create sounds that are somehow familiar whilst simultaneously containing the unexpected. last year s mangwana, featured long time faze action collaborator, zeke manyika, singing in his native zimbabwean shona over faze action s infectious disco production. this time, british/brazilian singer, artist and all round creative force de majeur, nina miranda, takes things further with her invitation to vamos pintar or let s paint, in portuguese. on the surface there is the familiar faze action restyled proto house but it soon becomes apparent that the brothers have appropriated more than just a brazilian vocal. punchy 808 drums and fizzy synths are infused with brazilian caixa and pandaro as if they had always been designed to co-exist. the remixes come from the illustrious max essa, whose british born/tokyo resident background chimes well with the international nature of this latest offering. his slo-mo bubble dub simmers with mediterranean sun that reclines into romantic piano flourishes and dubbed out vocals, whilst the extended dub manages to draw out the original elements at their original tempo. faze action s own paradise 90 dub closes the package by keeping close to the original arrangement with added economy and plenty of dub delay of course.

this autumn, wah wah 45s are very proud to present their latest signing, an outfit who ve garnered huge praise from jools holland, are darlings of the guardian s music reviews pages, and have set festivals alight up and down the country with their unique melange of sounds. for a good few years, honeyfeet has been a conduit for the ideas and expressions of an exotic mixture of manchester based musicians. jazz? yes, some of that! folk? stick that in there! hip-hop? i thought you d never ask! someone once called it folk-hop and barrelhouse-pop, and that s just vague enough to make sense. it helps that they are fronted by ríoghnach connolly, real world s newest signing and -a remarkable singer and flautist who can ease from irish traditional influences to soul- (the guardian). this extraordinary band s debut single for wah wah 45s, sinner, was originally affectionately known as boingy squelch, after the unconventional sounds trombonist biff roxby used in his early demos. ríoghnach conveys the story of a woman who never intends on staying at home -chained to the sink- - -i may be a sinner, but i m not a slave-. in that way, the song is a rejection of outdated, traditional roles. since their previous album, 2013 s it s a good job i love you, keyboardist john ellis jumped on board as full-time member, bringing his unique musical presence. this enabled the development of a more texturally adventurous style, as witnessed with the dual atonal solo between himself and guitarist ellis davies on sinner. similarly, for their next lp, orange whip, engineer, bassist and spiritual guide lorien edwards makes his honeyfeet recording debut, so completing the -kitchen- of this very special band. sinner is released on limited 7- vinyl (100 copies only!) on october 20th and comes complete with a woozy, low slung club-friendly mix from former innocent sorcerer, polish dj and producer envee. the album, orange whip, will be released on wah wah 45s in the summer of 2018.

just a few months after its first release, nitsa traxx comes back with a very special 12”. the project started with a file exchange between eduardo de la calle and ferenc. they decided to work each track on their own side using only a few isolated sounds from the other. this way none of the tracks could never be treated as a full original, but proper remixes of tracks that never existed, building an uncanny, almost dreamlike emotion. a side is for ferenc’s “parón largo”, where synthetic strings are omnipresent and time and space unbends, evolving to an anticlimax where an eerie vocal and the longest possible drop are the leading trademark. a never ending and emotional standstill that goes deeper than the mariana trench. eduardo de la calle uses his distinctive signature sound in the b side. “cloaking tech d fly d” is an obsessive yet beautiful track that reminds us of the somewhere in detroit series. this is a mental and heart-warming tribute to the motor city sound that just a producer like eduardo could do. next releases are on the corner already, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

autotomy is a collaboration between belgium s sleeperhold publications, brooklyn-based musician patricia (max ravitz) and the dutch artist louis reith. this output is the result of a long process of contemplation, discussion and elimination which gave us a record that encapsulates both patricia s sense for hardware production and dance floor rawness. describing this release is not a simple task. so we ll just tell it like it is: it s a record that slows down and, in this process, reveals its mystery. referencing the title of this release, wunderkind max ravitz seems to provide the listener with the possibility of transformation, a way to shed part of your own being.

resurgam bedeutet ich werde wiederauferstehen- und ist das heiß ersehnte, sechste studioalbum von fink. die band besteht aus dem in england geborenen und in berlin lebenden singer/songwriter und bandgründer fin greenall und seinen langjährigen mitstreitern tim thornton (drums, gitarre) und guy whittaker (bass). das album erscheint mitte september 2017 bei r coup d / ninja tune. der titel -resurgam- entstammt einer lateinischen inschrift aus einer 900 jahre alten kirche in greenalls heimat cornwall. diese haltung pulsiert durch das ganze album, das vom wegweisenden produzenten flood (pj harvey, u2, foals, warpaint, the killers) in seinen assault & battery studios in nord-london aufgenommen wurde. die zehn neuen tracks wurden innerhalb von zwei monaten geschrieben einer luxuriösen zeitspanne im vergleich zu vorherigen fink-alben und bilden einen songzyklus, der zugleich selbstbewusst und umfassend ist. resurgam ist ein mutiges neues kapitel, aber auch unverkennbar fink: mit ganzem herzen, gefühlvoll, unbändig, aufregend. ein klares highlight!

get weird does love a tune that conjures up the feeling of or suits being played out in the desert. “falling” does just that. it was built to be played outdoors with it s spacious vibe and tight groove.

ahead of a forthcoming ep on midnight riot dropping later this year, norm de plume makes a welcome return to his own label plumage nearly a full 2 years since it s last release in 2015. plumage05 is norm s 3rd solo ep for the imprint. a1 new flow is vintage ndp fodder it s just the tempo that has risen. two bars of obscure disco gets lifted, chopped & filtered. the emerging source material merging with norm s own synth lines / swells and chopped vocal stabs - all underpinned by tight, chunky, grooving drums. deep, disco-house the way we like it. b1 another flow see s norm explore more of his own original musical composition with this slightly deeper, more electronic cut. a soul vocal sits upon deep pads and a driving, gritty 1 note bass line. pads and synths swirl and build and we get some wild modulation on the filters before the track breaks to slowly introduce a repetitive, rolling & pounding motif over which norm lays some signature pads and a lovely simple lead-synth line.

‘keep it simple’ is anything but, the atmosphere came from an early morning field recording in the departure lounge of milan airport, the chatter and noise comes over as something almost alien and the melody came later after an alcohol soaked evening sitting by candlelight with friends, playing the piano. despite it’s multiple layers it has only one message - give trance a chance. ‘at last’ is a more direct affair, with a classic call and response pattern, the 0-coast shouts aggressively at the microbrute and the microbrute responds with a howl not dissimilar to a lost whale calf calling for its mother.. either that or its just a banger.
