marcus lambkin aka shit robot returns with his third full length album for dfa records, entitled what follows. the 11-track album was conceived and recorded at marcus’ home studio in a small town outside stuttgart, worked on in various new york studios and then mixed over the course of 11 intense & coffee-fuelled days in dfa label mate juan maclean’s new hampshire studio. the album follows lambkin’s previous long-players, from the cradle to the rave (2010) and we got a love (2014), which drew plaudits from the likes of the guardian and pitchfork, and featured reggie watts and james murphy among the array of contributors.

youth isn’t usually associated with wisdom, or depth or complexity for that matter. most 22 year-olds are still figuring out how a washing machine works but in the case of howes (the solo project of manchester-based john howes) he’s making electronic music that is operating on innovative and experimental levels one might expect from a hardened career musician hitting their stride. having released a more house-oriented 12” on melodic a couple of years ago, his debut album proper is a record that is as expressive as it is cohesive. it’s a release that floats between nocturnal stillness and insomniac driven intensity. the shift, howes says, “comes from the forced and narrow nature of a lot of electronic music. most modern electronic music to me is too safe in terms of ambition, sound design and intention.”

samaris release silkidrangar sessions ist ein nachfolger und begleiter des letztjährigfen albumdebüts silkidrangar und beinhaltet überarbeitete versionen des originals, welche nun exakt ein jahr später veröffentlicht werden. samaris vereinen sehr ungleiche elemente in ihrer musik, die von elektronischen sounds, über klarinette bis hin zu jófríður Ákadóttirs bezaubernder stimme reichen. samaris mischen kalte elektronik mit gewagten, perkussiven beats und eindringlichen vocals, welche isländischen gedichten des 19. jahrhunderts entnommen wurden. einen großteil des letzten jahres verbrachte die band auf tour und spielte festivals wie roskilde, green man, reeperbahn, longitude, etc. die silkidrangar sessions wurden über zwei tage in reykjavík aufgenommen, und es wurden diverse gastmusiker eingeladen, welche instrumente wie tabla drums, cello, saxophon oder modulare synthesizer einbrachten.

theyre young and tough, and especially wonderful too, easily one of the most compelling harmony soul groups to ever hail from the windy city! the sets a chicago soul gem from the early 70s, recorded with a laidback, slightly tripped-out vibe thats different than the tighter styles of other groups from the same scene, definitely righteous at points, with some of the superbad modes you might hear from an east coast lineup like the delfonics or soul generation, especially when they were trying to get a bit more conscious in their message. arrangements are great – handled by tom tom washington, eugene record, and cliff davis, very much at the best brunswick mode, but again with a deeper sort of vibe too. the title cuts a monster, and a very fitting follow-up to their earlier sly, slick, & wicked track – and the album features 2 versions (vocal and instrumental) of a cut called this is the lost generation, a very righteous soul groove with a heavy production tip.
