many of us wondered what happened to legendary chicago artist, producer and dj spencer kincy aka gemini since the early 2000s. a cursed journey into insanity or a deliberate choice to turn the page of music for another life ? speculations have been abound...where did he go ? with these 3 previously unreleased tracks one should think spencer is back on the scene...but not quite. just lost tapes found in the attic, some unlikely email communications and you ve got the lost ep, his final testament under the gemini moniker. what you have here is another brilliant example of spencer s musicality, raw or metallic sounds melted into live and program drums delivering unique dancefloor energy (4321, jungle life) or deeper, and simpler structures with chicago vibes from another age (monday to wednesday). defiantly fresh !

friends & relations is a freshly minted imprint based in peckham, a neighbourhood that has gone from run-down dump to hipster haven in the space of a few short years. the label s first missive comes from its founder and proud peckham-dweller, ali nebraska gibbs, a producer best known for his missives on rush hour and mister saturday night. it s a predictably strong release, with both -stop playing with my heart- and -keep what ya got- showcasing gibbs skill for turning rubbery disco and soul gems into tasty, club-ready house cuts. he s particularly good at teasing out tracks via judicious use of sampled loops, as the deeper and smokier closer, -rat boogie-, deftly proves.

newcomer region takes no time to get his credentials across, and this debut ep is all you could possibly ask for from an artist making their way up the food chain. coming though on the young jaunt label, region dishes out some seriously magnificent dub techno lashings here, with the opener -subline- being something of rough gem, the remix comes from lies-associate voiski, and the frenchman strips the whole thing down to a deeper, murkier tone that we ve come to associate him to. -borders-, on the b-side, is a supremely deep and meditative house track with a touch of the shed in it, and main man basic soul unit drops his version of the tune, a broken beat assemblage with that same dubwise feel that wraps the groove of the original cut.

detroits brainstorm have achieved cult status as a group among underground disco, soul and boogie aficionados worldwide. hot for you lifted from their 3rd lp from 1979 has always been a huge record for the more discerning disco jocks, those who like to dig a little deeper to find the gems. a real dancefloor burner that found favour with everyone from larry levan to daniele baldelli after it s original release. the same can be said for journey to the light, another anthemic slice of midtempo michigan soul that was hugely popular in london on its infamous -rare groove- scene, pirate radio stations and beyond. lifted from the bands second lp and oozing class journey is a stellar cut, truly essential! both of these tracks on one 12- already make this an essential release for any real soul head, but the fact that the versions featured here are private re-edits from one of the true masters of the game s private vaults makes it utterly unmissable. yes, thats right - danny krivit, disco royalty, a true pioneer and re-edit trailblazer adding his unique touch to these incredible pieces of music make this a particularly hot biscuit. danny has kindly opened up his archive and in conjunction with tabu / demon music group brings us these amazing reworkings. both tracks have been lovingly edited and tweaked by mr.k himself with dj s and dancers in mind. 100% legit!

for their third delicacies 12inch this year, smd take a deeper, more spaced out approach, in contrast to the strict techno of the previous two releases. far away from a distance features hypnotic synth washes that glide slowly in and out of time with the track s rhythmic bed, stumbling over each other in a 5am haze. -flying or falling- pushes into classic smd melodies, mournful detroit indebted warmth spilling over the groove.

most excellent unlimiteds series of 45s celebrating the 45th year of danny krivits career continues with a blast of two heavyweight cuts that, to borrow the parlance of the era from which they came, are bonafide sure shots. wood, brass & steels *funkanova* a jazz-funk masterpiece and loft classic that was liberally sampled in the house world (black science orchestra, terrence parker, the bucketheads), is pared down to its most joyous elements. from the intro, a typical krivit maestros detail of an opening bass slide prefacing hands-in-the-air cascades of iconic horns and keys, to the echo of the last notes, its a perfect edit immaculately tailored for dj usage. the flip delves deeper into new york city dance history with a rough and rugged beat- down of a proto-disco, b-boy classic: boobie knight & the universal ladys * sex*. displaying his usual knack of going straight for the jugular, krivit takes the songs siren-call-to-the-dance floor horn riff as his starting point, peeling off another layer to the floor-shaking bass and drums before bringing it all back to the top with a perfectly placed drum roll that will have flash disciples fiending for doubles. solidifying this blazing double-sider is the fact that neither of these essential cuts has ever appeared in seven-inch form. another most excellent unlimited sure shot!

various artist ep collaborations 2 from unlock recordings, featuring tracks from label head solimano, bruno de vincenti, christian burkhardt, barem and federico molinari. gonzalo solimano first created the unlock recordings imprint back in 2004 as a platform to support latin american productions, and ever since then the buenos aires label has played host to the likes of guti, jorge savoretti and franco cinelli. the second instalment in the labels collaborations series, solimano now invites german producer christian burkhardt to join argentinian talents bruno de vincenti, oslo records artist federico molinari and fun records founder barem for a split release. first up is solimano & bruno de vincentis cut love nebulae which layers infectious percussion with gentle chord sequences and filtered effects. christian burkhardts doog then cuts in on a deeper and darker tip, with a low-slung bass groove and hypnotic pad sequences. up next is barems funk duck with its rolling percussion, staggered synths and a pulsating low end, before federico molinari rounds off the package with 2.014.2, blending dubby bass patterns, chopped samples and frantic synth spirals.
