the finnish tropical troupe maajo is back with a two-track ep. in contrast to the afro-balearic sound of their 2016 debut tropic of tulli, the new defo / mansaba ep is a step in a deeper and sometimes darker direction. defo kicks off the ep with a driving 5/4 rhythm. reminiscent of mark ernestus’ ndagga sounds, it is a tribal tune with maajo’s signature ethereal disco elements. trevor deep jr.’s version straightens out the original’s unconventional time signature and focuses on a four-to-four beat and plenty of berliner dub. the remix is a solid dancefloor tool, traversing the original like a train making its way through a dark rainforest. the b-side is entirely covered by mansaba, a 14-minute long journey into inwards. this studio jam, recorded largely live, is a wild mixture of polyrhythmic sequences, krautrock guitar licks, equatorial forest percussion and violin synths. the trip starts slow and soothing, sneakily picks up pace and keeps grow and growing, eventually exploding into a full-on tribal dance.

a side, -i want- is the most laid-back moment, in lack of a better term. warm-sounding tribal percussions supporting the interaction of deep chords and wonderfully lush synths running thought the whole track only to get enriched with a beautiful piano line in the 2nd half. if there is track fitting to represent the sunset, that transition from day to night moment – -i would- is the one.

b1 -ghost- is the track on the record with the most forward-momentum. deep tribal rhythms and lush synth lines are a sort-of a leitmotif on this record and are present here as well, with an occasional vocal snippet that only deepens the magic.

b2 -abourisha- makes good use of those leitmotifs in a similarly effective but overall quite different manner. broken rhythm gives it a slightly different energy, making it an ideal track for those 5 am moments when a track like this marks the night.

mikkel metal returns to copenhagen’s echocord this may with his new mini lp ‘just enough light’, comprising six originals from the danish artist. copenhagen based producer and dj mikkel metal has been a beacon of light in the danish electronic music scene and further afield for nearly two decades now, with the dub techno imprint from his hometown, echocord, being the predominant home for his output, whilst also releasing material on cologne’s kompakt, tartelet, semantica and avant roots, a telling sign of the quality embodied in his work. here though we see mikkel deliver a mini album concept in the shape of ‘just enough light’ and opener ‘awake’ perfectly sets the tone with emotive, dynamically unfolding atmospherics, tension building bass drones and spiraling dub chords subtly easing us into the project. ‘bregnan’ then stirs in some classing dub-techno tropes with billowing stab sequences, lumpy subs and off beat high hats carrying the hypnotic groove for six and a half minutes. ‘jech’ then strips things back to an almost beatless amalgamation of murky chords and modulating synth whirrs. opening the flip side of the release is ‘include’ which embraces a brighter feel via ethereal pad swells, jazztinged synth melodies and bumpy 909 rhythms before ‘konkin’ edges back into the eerie, brooding aesthetic with bubbling echoes, broken drums and menacing bass swells at its core. ‘restore’ then closes the package on a stripped-back vibe, laying focus on an ever- eveolving singular dub chord to ebb and flow around thunderous subs, kicks and bright hats.

the italian dj and producer viels is the perfect example of a promising artist who has earned his stripes in the scene. his first contribution to dynamic reflection was a single track on a va two years ago, then a solo ep on the nursery last year and now it s time for his first well-earned vinyl called distrophism. although his sound has matured over the years, he has never compromised as far as his straight forward sound goes. circular, the a1, is the best possible example of that. the continuous drive keeps it going for well over seven minutes, without ever becoming superficial or dull. the b-side extends to other sides of his musical spectrum by making use of more drone-like, hypnotic elements. beside these three convincing originals, spanish heavyweight svreca jumps in for a remix of circular, completing the variance of styles. needless to say, this new release, proves that viels as an artist and this ep in particular, are forces to be reckoned with.

after the soft landing of banoffee pies records latest sub label venture otaku, the imprint continues following the theme of subtle compositions with the second edition, this time from swedish born vilhelm with mermaid porn. a five tracker starting with an aquatic feeling on the title track mermaid porn with bubbling effects rolling into the a2. entitled kirchner with more with positive and patient melodies. standing to attention in the spaceships cafeteria, the a side comes to a close with always in costume. the b side opens with saturday bossa - drums inspired by the brazilian music wave of bossa jazz with a slight twist. the b2. track, skopje blends off beat percussions with a cutting snare and a more electronic 4/4 direction. the general expression being, music for home. with love from banoffee pies. x

the water surely is greener on the other side. susans 5th release marks perhaps the biggest step towards the so-called life of susan. speed and depth transform into ritualistic whistles, strange questions may be asked, but the summery seasons will blossom whilst binge eating kebabs with that wild seasoning. susan wont create her own energy drink, but the likes of dj swagger, axefield, dj windows xp and joakim hellgren sure have spiced up the spectrum of reason on this one.

next up to bat on art alfies velvet pony is stockholm talent and karlovak alumni cj scott and he hits way out of the park. the ep includes the highly anticipated track peaktimekatten already featured on baba stiltz resident advisor mix along with two more housebombs both bearing cjs signature touch of speed and urgency stretched out over the full length capacity of a records side. his previous release on karlovak gained huge support from the likes of martinez brothers and cassy.

the raw jacking sexiness of ghetto house has always played a big role in the killekill universe. so its high time to put out our first release which goes that direction. italian andrew soul is an artist we have been watching for a while already. when he sent the demo with the extremely raw and dirty tunes that you find on the a-side of this 12inch, the decision was easy: killer stuff which makes you bounce immediately we want to put this out! the b-side comes from dirtbox, who is also one half of snuff crew and therefore has been part of the killekill family for a while already. actually almost from the start. being the musical wizard he is, he can not only make house and acid music and anything else you could think of, but also class a ghetto house. maybe even more classic than andrew souls side but ranging from the percussive style of smmfd and work that to the raw energy of fukk it is definitely in no way less original. shake dat ass!

after a short break in the african wilderness, black rox return for part 4 of this acclaimed series. date with the rain sees soft rocks turn in an 11 minute one for the lion king manipulation of a joyous and uplifting jam that fuses traditional rhythms (think a humm-ba-ba) and vocals that are underpinned with a strong 4/4 kick.on the flip side,roots unit perform some major surgery with a pump up the jam reconstruction on le beat is technotronic. crazy percussive jungle rhythms and wonky vocal hooks rule the roost until it merges into a future techno-techno amazonian world.

as a companion release to his new material on is / was, mark has been kind enough to let us dig through his extensive back catalog, remaster and reissue three pearls from the crayon label heyday. zulu groove and warehouse blues roll along the darker technoid mode mark was known for at the time, while thru showcases the lighter, bouncier side of his style.

the boys from politics of dancing records launch their new imprint, p.o.d crxss. it s a label of collaborations, of paths crossed, it s about friendship, having fun making music with each other. the first release is understandably done by parisian artists, as djebali, franck roger and politics of dancing have been long time friends, deejaying together for years. the result is two quality deep house tracks, cut for dance floors, one track pressed on each side of the vinyl for maximum dynamics and dj friendly use. friends, music and party, thats what it s all about.

after the last release, that was more house-oriented, we can say – in a nutshell – that the upcoming ://ab004 is about: techno! with their piece ab1, nx1 take a powerful, break-fueled percussive line, keeping an eye on the big floor with their huge reverb rooms, while stephanie sykes, who grew so close to our hearts, presents a real peak time-slammer with her track blur, that definitely references to her brimming, energetic dj sets. jay quentin, also a friend of the club for many years, nourishes a lotz of warmth and depth in his track information superhigh, which remains still pushing enough for the dancefloor – perfect for a special b side. rave on, ravers!

relaxers fifth ep is the final edition in the self titled series that began in early 2016. th six tracks are split between viscous, serpentine techno and liminal, dubbed out beatless passages. my reminiscence opens with a shivering groove and a terror-soaked atmosphere before giving way to the more monolithic wormholing of headache. stevie and blister pack drift further afield from the dancefloor, rippling and reforming. each side is closed out with a brief passage: empty promises and health is wealth are evocative and fleeting snapshots.

following the massive buzz a round the labels last release (voted the record of 2017 by some 400+ international djs and tastemakers on bill brewster s dj history podcast/poll (2017 furtive 50), hobbes music kicks off 2018 with a heavy slice of warehouse techno backed with deeper electro flavours, a second double-a-side 12inch outing by the anonymous dali. you may remember dali (nb all caps in the spelling) released a debut 12inch around this time last year. support came from ben ufo, laurent garnier, domenic cappello (sub club), john heckle, chris duckenfield, the revenge, tom findlay (groove armada), sean johnston and xdb (among others) and a repress happened swiftly, with laurent garnier and avalon emersonalso supporting most recently (on wwfm and at berghain, respectively). dali has a passion for analogue synths, abstract, hypnotic dance music and all things psychedelic. don t bother looking her up on the net, social media etc. dali is eschewing all that, to let the music do the talking for now

a warm welcome to detroit producer javonntte for his first quintessentials release. javonntte has been releasing his blend of pure deep house quality for years and his how is club246 is another fine example of his great talent. so how is club246? first of all the title is an hommage to a club in detroit in 1996. and javonnttes interpretation of club246 is diverse! the opening track has a slight kerri chandler flair, whereas club246 is a pure pumping club tool for all you djs out there. the b-side goes deeper. worldmix is a slow, deep (hell yeah) and hip hopish low bpm groover, whereas citylights is a classic vocal deep house track. club246? proper house music all night long!

although better known for his euphoric uptempo european disco edit style across labels such as public possession, ostra discos and most recently bahnsteig23, here the melbourne based collector and dj steps away from the dancefloor and presents two slower paced and (dare we say) more mature, sample-based efforts on this double-a side limited edition 7 inch.

perfect records returns with a fully rounded release by danny scrilla. the a side, “mirrors” features talented singer alis beautifully tagging along on a very scrilla trip to space. on the b side, “can of worms” is an intense, sub-heavy roller that’s been blowing up soundsystems left and right. the final track on the ep, “wipeout”, is an absolute hoovery head-nodder for the dancefloor-inclined.

three years since profane’s seminal album v.illan mills was recorded for inperspective and it’s long overdue that he returns to the label. this canadian native’s unique style that somehow fuses the hip hop sensibilities of j.dilla, the jazz/funk ideologies of danny breaks and the experimental truth of squarepusher has been a breath of fresh air in recent years on the underground d&b scene and these two new cuts from him are no exception. the experimentally epic breakbeat off tempo monstrosity of drughmada is a heady, giddy tapestry of beats and breaks with a sleazy sample and panic led overtones. west newton views is a darker more minimal affair. a clunky, dubstep vibe which maintains moody intensity throughout. tense and suspenseful. the other side sees the triumphant return of rome’s lynch kingsley. this young, precocious talent has been a good friend to the label for a number of years and after making waves with his debut eden ep it was only a matter of time before his return. we are pleased to present void , a dark journey through the breakbeat, sci-fi escapism of early 90 s d&b which in time develops into a deep, break laden workout with gorgeous synths and fantasy atmospheres. a joy to behold.

mayak’s first part of their anniversary release continues to balance between deep and minimal house. for the a-side, the much promising noah skelton delivers a 12-minutes deep house saga, and for the 14 minutes remix on b-side we invited a legend - kamran sadeghi - who makes a sophisticated groove to support the great afterhours vibe.

a uk techno powerhouse returns to bass culture for their 55th release, bringing the ruckus with four deadly cuts that combine killer beats with powerful bass and a high level of production, as you might expect from d julz s respected label. ben sims appears under his ron bacardi alias with a follow up to 2015 s debut release, rock your body/first effort . much like the first ep, sims new release is fired up and ready to deliver its potent energy to the dance floors of the world.on the a side we re met with windy city , which kicks things off in frenetic style, its slamming beats colliding with the layers of analogue to produce a rather chaotic start to proceedings. this is followed by ready for action a tough, bouncing cut featuring a delectable female vocal which really sets things off nicely.the flipside continues in a similar vein as one left in the chamber brings a smooth vibe, though with the emphasis still on the percussive side of things. sims flexes his production muscles across all four tracks here, injecting the music with his years of experience on the road and in the studio. the last track is a beats mix of ready for action , highlighting the focus on beats, beats and more beats, adding an extra touch to an already powerful track. this is music par excellence from an artist who is a consummate professional, enjoy!
