when it comes to living legends in the texas and latin music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than soul vocalist and mexican-american songwriter and bandleader sunny ozuna. he became a star right out of high school in the late ‘50s and hasn’t looked back in the six decades since.
among countless other honors and notable achievements, sunny was the first latino artist to appear on dick clark’s “american bandstand” (in 1963). songs like “put me in jail,” “talk to me,” “should i take you home,” “my dream” and “smile now, cry later” still bring crowds to their feet throughout the southwest and california and around the world at “oldies” and “lowrider soul” events. and after releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in spanish and english), sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. his classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal.
this new compilation on brooklyn’s acclaimed big crown label is a lovingly curated selection of songs from the years 1966 to 1972. all compositions were originally released on sunny’s key-loc label, formed after his national star had been established, so he could have control of his own musical destiny. with sunny hits – a mix of originals and some great covers thrown in mr. brown eyed soul is an excellent celebration of sunny’s amazing body of work, and a perfect introduction for newcomers.

a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

born in the hammersmith west london. youthstar was into music from a very young age, relocated to france at just 16, and quickly discovered the drum & bass scene in bordeaux. he performed a load of shows around france with his partner at that time, elisa do brasil from 2004 to 2008. then he linked up with the infamous dirtyphonics and toured with them across the world for 3 years. as a true entertainer, youthstar quickly came up in the scene and was nominated 4 years in a row (2012 – 2015) as “best new comer mc” & “best mc” at the “drum & bass arena awards” in london.
he has worked with renowned drum & bass and bass music artists from around the globe including andy c, netsky, nero, borgore, metrik, shimon and the list goes on!

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

cosi002 further documents an emerging, ex-germanic theory of perth dance music, typified by tracks built on techno’s stern compositional logic, but poly-functional and cross-disciplinary, wearing the stripes given to them by this most nonpareil of electronic music ecosystems.
the ep has both dance floor heft and mood-focused flexes. “the hunt” is a solarised, laser-sharpened and hi-hat driven garage/big room hybrid. 8-minute “m is for audio” is a workhorse techno slow burner with all the red-eyed melancholy of greats like “acid eiffel” and “deep burnt”, acid burnt and stinging at the mid-range. conversely, “rube” abounds with percussive warmth and ear-dancing patterns, as does “freshness and convenience”, a bastard union of dusty breaks and a hard funk bassline. the ep ends with ambient cyber walkabout “freetown”, peripatetic, matte-toned and pulsing with vital signs.

landside is the collaboration between italian producers hunter/game and the icelandic band kura. the sound draws as much from the deep vibe and melancholy ambience of kuras reflective, dubby moods, as it does from the more insistent groove of hunter/game s dancefloor roots landside – signs of change ep signs of change is the fourth chapter of landsides journey through diverse sound researches that cross over to industrial ambients, basslines and a whirling melody accompained by a crescendo of sonorities that won’t release you from the flow. distance is a throw back voyage in a melodic orchestra of ethnic sonorities that elevate you to an esquisite and new dimension. luke hess remix, is a night bounce into into dub techno that will hypnotize you with its hazy yet enthralling use of vocals. kelpe remix is a deep and intense dreamlike hazy trip, accopanied by trippy melodies that melt with the voices of the original track.
