as one of the first dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between detroit and amsterdam, orlando voorn has long been recognized as one of the netherland’s most original and inventive producers in the world of electronic dance music. voorn began djing at the tender age of 12 and went on to win the dutch dmc dj championships in 1986 with his own characteristic blend of hiphop and electro. towards the end of the eighties he acquired his first sequencer, packed away his turntables and turned his hand to producing.

russian producer nocow debuts on rekids with five murky tracks this december. based in st. petersburg, nocow is undoubtedly one of russian electronic musics most remarkable protagonists having released on clone, figure, fauxpas musik, gost zvuk and styrax. recognised for maintaining consistency whilst traversing various sub-genres, nocow is as comfortable producing intricate idm and robust techno as he is calm ambient and melancholic electronica. in soul connection a spoken word vocal mutters over metallic percussion and ominous stabs whilst a dense pad washes over everything. an undulating synth and ethereal effects make up disappear before moving onto syncopated drums and shadowy atmospherics in samaya dolgaya noch. next up, stop is comprised of mesmerising melodies, sturdy kicks and a looped vox until nocow concludes the package with a short 2-step cut titled aesthetic mind.

john morales geht dahin, wo noch kein dj war. das universalgenie aus der bronx, das in diesem sommer resident dj bei defecteds glitterbox-event auf ibiza war und aktuell in londons angesagtem bussey building auflegt, veröffentlicht ein abendfüllendes programm. er präsentiert unveröffentlichte mixe mit klassikern von weltstarts wie donna summer, barry white, diana ross, level 42, cher, teddy pendergrass, eddie kendricks und vielen anderen. satte vier cds oder zwei separat erhältliche doppel-lps ist diese einmalige zusammenstellung lang. john morales legt seit mehr als drei jahrzehnten auf und hat in dieser zeit über 800 remixe produziert. der vierte teil seiner -m+m mixes- ist zweifelsohne sein bislang ehrgeizigstes projekt. 32 stücke hat er seiner komplexen und unverkennbaren behandlung unterzogen und sie so noch einmal neu erfunden. dafür bekam er, was kaum einem dj gelang: man gewährte ihm zugang zu den original-mehrspuraufnahmen aus den archiven. wenn boiler room ihn als einen -der besten produzenten und arrangeure von disco-musik- beschreibt, ist das eher noch untertrieben. keiner mixt wie john morales.

coming hot off his rather expansive cognitive dissonance 2x12inch for love notes, and also an ep for axetrax, tape_hiss herein continues his impressive run. on jacob s ladder, the artist pushes his emotionally wrought sound over cooking percussion and bubbling acid undertones. maspeth ave is quite honestly the nastiest bassline we have heard on a deep house track in some time, sure to cause spontaneous bass face in the listener. life as an echo uses soaring chords and synths to prove its point, and forests of my mind finishes the ep off with a pitch bending chord that pushes the track right along. yet another extremely cohesive, emotionally charged effort from this artist.

das cover hält zwar nicht unbedingt, was sich der lüsterne betrachter spätestens beim blick auf titel wie »drink my honey«, »the wet dream« und »dirty willy« von der musik versprechen könnte, liefert aber einen überaus tanzbaren industrial-house-mix.
mit hilfe des gesampelten gitarrenbretts von niemand geringerem als luc van acker und dem groovigen zusammenspiel zwischen drumcomputern und synthie-themen ergibt sich letztendlich eine durchaus massenkompatible mischung, die mit ruths multifunktionalitäts-gesang geradezu garniert wird. zwischendurch lockert dann auch mal ein an nina hagens »african reggae« erinnerndes »marijuana in your brain« die szenerie auf, ehe es kurz darauf wieder mit härteren sequenzern und uptempo-breakbeats weitergeht.

für das wiener künstlerkollektiv sofa surfers steht seit seiner gründung 1997 die musikalische weiterentwicklung im mittelpunkt seines schaffens. seit ihrem debut -transit- bis zu ihrem neuesten album 20 loten die sofa surfers permanent die möglichkeiten von technologie einerseits und kollektivem spiel andererseits aus. 20 jahre bandgeschichte - das ist schon ein grund zum feiern. aber die sofa surfers haben zu ihrem jubiläum auch noch anderes vor: statt einem simplen -best of- hat man sich nämlich etwas ganz besonderes ausgedacht. neben neuen versionen einiger klassiker sind es vor allem die ganz neuen songs, die eine bislang ungeahnte fahrtrichtung vorgeben. dass sich die sofa surfers dabei dennoch stilistisch treu bleiben, ist ehrensache.
