after several appearances on the label, kareem comes up trumps again with an excellent first solo single release backed by a wonderful remix from white doyen oskar offermann himself.how low can you go the opener track acts as a discreet, structured, driving and some how dubby house tune that keeps a nice layer of grit beneath the fingernails. its loopy character imparts the feeling of virtually remaining unchanged but it nevertheless staidly evolves within its sonic borders and imparts a sensual quality of all-enveloping warmth. oskar offermanns interpretation of how low can you go introduces skipping melodies that are transmitted as choppy discoesque pulses and rhythmic modulated bass sounds are the preferred form of punctuation. indeed the remix is intended to be a dj tool, but like all of oskar offermanns recent house works, it builds smoothly as though every element was simply waiting in the wings to make its appearance at the proper moment, and – just before it finishes up – sounds like it could go on forever.

>univrs< follows on from and develops the concept of the album unitxt (raster-noton, 2008). whereas the focus of unitxt was on the processing of rhythmic patterns (unit = unit of measurement, element) and information (txt = data, language), with univrs the focus is on the conceptual differentiation of a universal language (universum/universal = unity, entirety). the 14 tracks of univrs have evolved from a live context, hence the approach is more continuous and dense.

just like different fishes can be found in different grounds, also the acoustic tales of the micronaut take place in different regions of the emotional landscape: sometimes warm, sometimes fresh – sometimes calm and stagnant, sometimes lively and floating. and just like all the fishes are connected by the water surrounding them, also this album has its connecting element: a very individual and independent groove. this groove comes with a lot of surprises. for instance, when a guitar chord from the acoustic band atmosphere of gruen- dling suddenly gets tangled up in a loop and introduces an unexpected but coherent change into the direction of broken, electronic beats. or when the emotional world music elements of schleie mix up with exciting halfstep rhythms. sophi- sticated arrangements, unusual instrumentations and intense emotions- these are the main attributes of friedfisch . though the experimental character of this work does not really aim the dance floor, it still keeps connected to this place: two sensitive remixes by mollono.bass represent the upbeat for an entire series, being exclusively released on vinyl.

raoul records is very happy to welcome liviu groza for the fourth release of the label. after his china charm ep on cityfox just before this summer, he is back with 3 tracks that fit perfectly with the sound of the label. it certainly has something to do with house and techno, but livius personal touch is quickly modifying our expectations, for the pleasure of our ears. there is an authentic energy in livius work and the a-side track >no love< is a perfect example of that. what starts with a typical filtered techno loop is suddenly brought to another level with a huge melodic bass line and then with two chords that enlight the track with a certain melancholy. the b-side starts with another killer bass line. >the manimals< bass line is a snake that enrolls its body around every other element: a great house groove and an hypnotic piano. liviu is a snake charmer! the 3rd track >mean fine< seems to be the perfect b2 track. what sounds rather quiet and reduced when you first listen to it, turns itself into an efficient old school dj tool with such groovy hats and hypontic vocals once played on a proper sound system!

following the legendary first two, stoically super minimal records >sog 1< and >sog 2< that provide ecstasy disguised as boredom on kompakt extra/speicher in 2007, and the outstanding beautifully bizarre >sog - abweichung< on profan in 2010, we are now listening to >fremde hÄnde<. like its predecessors, this sog stands in the tradition of >the art of omission< with wolfgang voigt variegating his preference for the bluntly straightforward quaver bass in two different forms. the a-side contains a tonally noncommittal sequence ambling across the keyboard in quantised form, reminiscing of the arpeggiator (accompaniment function) function of early 70ies and 80ies synthesizers. on the b-side, daring and thoroughly unquantised quaver rhythms rock around a bass drum that, as the only straight element, tries to keep the whole thing together. the result sounds a little like a delirious can live.

subtlety is not the first word used in connection with most djs, but there is much more the métier of germany s gregor tresher than simply playing records, as lights from the inside attest: just as a painting or photograph appears to move if one stares at it long enough, with close listening the stratified grooves and melodies assembled on gregor s stunning third full-lenght artist album reveal an organic universe of shifting sound. meticulous attention to the latter element—melody—was of utmost concern to the frankfurt resident. not obvious, eight-bar earworms that would quickly exhaust their welcome, but musical lines that could repeat, develop and intertwine in different patterns. in this regard, lights from the inside harks back to gregor tresher s earlier releases, but as always his sound aesthetic continues to evolve in new directions.

the final part to the limited edition hi five mobilee! vinyl series features tracks from mobilees head lady, anja schneider, and one of the very first artists on the mobilee roster, sebo k. each of the artists careers have grown and flourished with the label, and whilst retaining many elements from their signature styles, these tracks also show how they have developed their sound over the last five years. sebo ks way back comes with a funky house bass line and colorful synths, creating a very full and warm sound, and one that is topped with an element of old school vibes. as with all of his releases, its classically built for the dance floor and one that will be enjoyed by many. meanwhile, anja schneiders >something left<, has a more minimal and isolated feel to it, broken up with the soulful voice of cari golden. completely contrasting to sebo ks a side, it makes this an interestingly varied release!

>hollow hills< keeps the psychedelic side of riley reinholds music up, which he has released since his first release on disko b in 1995 (red flare ep). jittering voices, sounds that ricochet and basslines that come like little earthquakes. the 11 minute epic >hollow hills< works similar to the waves at the beach, constantly featuring irregular shapes and never repeating itself. the track has been remixed by french artist gohan, who lives in paris and who has electrified the track with his vision of modern daring electronica, bordering on music the glorious wishmountain did in the past. finally domestic musical impact comes from the cologne musician oeler who has made a tougher and more elaborate percussive beat, the core element of his interpretation of >hollow hills<.

this is the second release by antonelli for dreck after his boogie ep in 2007. in classic antonelli working method the material here is made without a cpu, just with hardware. this gives the tracks a warm feel and a sense of an older mode of production, but nevertheless the two tracks are fully rooted in the now! stefan schwander starts out with the idea of the bassline as a genre-defining element in music. he then works from this central idea towards an euphoric and a reductive version, resulting in the two tracks here at hand, >disconnected< on the a side, and >operatore< on the b side. they both feature a beautifully analogue disco (if not moroder) bassline, build up continuously without ever meandering or loosing direction - very straight and pushing the dancefloor forward with >operatore< being the more bouncy and carefree track of the two.
