sterns edits returns after the sell-out success of its debut edition with another two catalogue reworks from ben gomori. this time he turns his attention to burkina faso s much-loved taxi-driver-turned-singer, amadou balaké. balaké ( porcupine in mandinka) is burkina faso s proudest musical export, and in 2013 he recorded his final album before passing away: in conclusion. the record saw him revisit some of his most popular tracks from his remarkable 50-year career, backed by an eight-piece burkinabé band who took the country s traditional sounds and brought them into a contemporary light. gomori retains the essence of the original recordings which were mostly captured in one take and marries them to vigorous afro-house stylings. bar konon mousso (musicien c est pas quelqu un) in which balaké tells of a bar lady being unimpressed by his profession, gets a gentle push towards the modern dancefloor, its wonderful sax lines resplendent. massa kamba is taken for a drive down the more traditional route, with commanding drums bolstering the original grooves and a marvelous triple harmony brass section at its core. balakes freewheeling style suits the hypnotic feel of the edits to a tee. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and london s ben gomori.

us producer d’marc cantu needs little introduction in the world of acid house and techno. since the late 2000s he’s been serving us quality musical output on labels like crème organization, m>o>s recordings, nation, altered moods or spectral sound, just to name a few. as well as his solo productions, he’s also one half of 2am/fm unit, alongside tadd mullinix (jtc / dabrye).
using a selection of hardware tools and analogue machines, his rugged sound draws on house, techno, acid, electro and hip hop and features crafty studio skills, knowing sampling and lovable raw aesthetics, defining his own sound that became known as jakbeat.
his latest offering for little beat different is, well, rather different in comparison to his usual club oriented output. it’s not as focused on straightforward dancefloor bangers, (although they are present here too), but features more experimental pieces, suitable for home listening purposes. totalling almost 38 minutes in length, this project has more of an album feel to it than a 12”.

a super rare disco / modern banger to end the year. star quake came out ofcolumbus,georgiaand that s about as far as they got. don t you know i love you is a relatively recent spin with o.g copies easily going for over $1000 and with good reason. a disco floater over some brilliant bass, i also edited the b side to remove the fade in so it can now be dropped easily in a club. happy new year.

known for housing a famous beastie boys sample, the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy, eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: “rien ne va plus,” from the self-titled 1975 album, had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys’ “car thief.” “rien ne va plus” is a banger, all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album, funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments, like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of “lilliput” or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on “horsing around.” “rien ne va plus” remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could, at least once, put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

another top notch bokhari outing! stephen is a scotsman but sounds like he is from detroit - he was also on bk013 where he shared an ep with hiver and provided us with the excellent theme from sapl.this time he s on his own. early 90s uk electronica and of course, the inescapable detroit blueprint run deep through this one, the unmistakably chewy, tangible heft of analogue sonics married perfectly with emotive melodies. a welcome whiff of azymuth era kenny larkin clings to the whole ep, while cologne collective noorden regular ikpathua lays out a spacious and deeply atmospheric rendition too...
