after an excellent 12inch on rosten label sstrom drops his first full length otider, which is by far the most diverse offering of the project encompassing elements of different genres and putting them in woolen and dense sonic textures. otider could be loosely translated as un-times or non-times. it positions the tracks out of specific context and rather represents them as some rediscovered artifacts relating to personal experiences of the artist. otider slightly distances sstrom from techno label as the compositions elegantly drift between lush transparency and thick grooves of outsider/lo-fi house as in kronofobi or svvaren or sensitive, yet subtly monolith and mellow techno on damm and i huvudet. in modernisten we can even trace echoes of coldwave/synth aesthetics with melancholic guitars sweeping over hypnotic rhythmic patterns, while closer sov nu introduces something which reminds a darker form of garage music with light synthpads constantly surfacing among raw mechanical beats. all the tracks were created over a relatively long period between 2010 and 2017 by employing the process where he let his hands work automatically without interference from his head. this freedom could be felt across the release, which juggles with different musical forms so lightly and organically, but at the same time maintains a coherent vision, which illustrates the vast scope and diversity of the artist.

following the u.s. army’s liberation of munich in may 1945, the world’s first amerikahaus was inaugurated there with a library, a magazine reading room, a children’s library, a record and lm department, and lecture and seminar rooms, together with a concert hall and exhibition space. up to 80.000 people a month utilized the offerings of amerikahaus during its early years. beginning in 1953, the united states information agency (usia), an institution founded as an instrument of the cold war, began to finance amerikahaus. in addition to representing the u.s., its principal task in west germany was to democratize and denazify the postwar population. after the beginning of the cold war, many of these re-educative measures also served as propaganda in a programmatic linking of democratic and economic principles meant to strengthen transatlantic relations against the communist bloc. in 1997, the u.s. government concluded its work at amerikahaus in munich and shipped almost all its items back to the states. however, 1.630 long-playing vinyl records from the library were left behind in cardboard boxes in the basement. when michaela melián looked through this forgotten collection, one of the first things she came across was don gillis’ 1940 tone poem »portrait of a frontier town«, whose second movement is entitled »where the west begins«. don gillis, a composer and radio producer, used the musical styles and genres of that decade to create an explicitly american program music. michaela melián’s »music from a frontier town« is fueled by the diverse sonic material of this extensive record collection once considered as an instrument of cultural education. this record has been produced in addition to melián’s twenty-four hour performative music installation »music from a frontier town« in the garage of what is now the bavarian center for transatlantic relations at karolinenplatz, munich (4-5 may 2018).

as a polychrome composer, laurent perrier is developing his work through a large number of projects which, although they often share many common points, are all built on a strong identity. thus, zonk t has always been a way of exploring the most ambient fringes of dub, and the transition from the all-digital to compositions made entirely on modular synthesizers has overall not changed its approach in depth. yet, banburismus, whose unlikely title comes from the crypto-analytical process developed by alan turing during the second world war, begins by taking us by surprise with a long luminescent drone that seems to rise endlessly before dissolving little by little in a wall of echoes, glitches and distorted voices then make way to round and deep basses disturbed by metal peaks on which float distant blips, like farway echoes of the secret messages decoded by turing. real master stroke, this track occupying the first face of the lp is a trip in an ether much more populated than it seems. shorter, the three pieces of the b side participate in the same atmosphere, but still extend the sonic field. more stripped, more airy, more cosmic, banburismus achieves there new heights with ease. we could be tempted to play the game of references and try to put zonk t somewhere amongst the great experimenters of electronic dub. but who cares,, banburismus is well beyond categories, and laurent perrier, by cracking the code, opens for us the doors of a universe of disturbing and fascinating vastness.

with the celebrated return of dr. octagon (dan the automator, kool keith and dj qbert) in 2017 including their first-ever live performances fans are sure to keep gobbling up the space weirdness that first surfaced more than 20 years ago. get on down presents a unique picture disc, featuring the original octagon album artwork by the legendary artist pushead. the infamous doctor’s head and lower torso reach above and below the actual 45 rpm playing surface, as if trying to escape their two-dimensional status. on the a-side is a brand-new dr. octagon song, “octagon octagon,” which picks up where the original energy left off. it’s a dark and grooving glimpse into keith’s rubberband mind, jumping abstractly from line to line, chock full of equal partscharisma and dementia. on the flip is the song for which the group is most well-known, “blue flowers.” the version presented here is the amazing “prince paul’s so beautiful” remix, which first appeared on a mo wax 12” in the uk in late 1996. it was the first meeting of the two great production minds from different eras – dan the automator and prince paul would go on to collaborate many more times over the next decade, most notably as the group handsome boy modeling school. this is another great trophy for any self-respecting kool keith and dan the automator fan, combining the old and the new in triumphant fashion.

dimensional people is by it’s nature a collaborative album. originally premiering as a spatial composition using object-based mixing technology playing with the possibilities of sonic design (4d sound) and collective musicianship, the recording expands upon these ideas. dimensional people expresses itself as a dynamic 50-piece orchestra, telling a story in sound. mouse on mars offer sound as a means to encourage open-minded societies, aided by cutting-edge technology including their own mominstruments music software or a spatial mixing technique called object based mixing, with which a spatial version of the work was created. it is a conceptual puzzle composed around one harmonic spectrum within one rhythmic scheme, mostly in the tempo of 145bpm (inspired by chicago footwork, so the dance ?oor is not entirely absent). looking ahead, dimensional people will also be realized through installation, presenting the work as an immersive listening experience, as well as performance.

initially paying tribute to the analogue absurdity, sonic diversity and sheer imagination of the early 90s dance music landscape, future four returns after a hiatus of several years, pushing into new eras, machines and ideals with connection. initially a solo project of andy meecham, the brains behind emperor machine, chicken lips, and bizarre inc., connection is the first future four release to feature the contribution of erol alkan as a permanent member, and is a coupled with a remix from i:cube. a veritable powerhouse of synths, vintage drum machines and all man-ner of effects, connection unfolds with minimal tempo and maximum impact, as sequences of unexpected electronics gradually build from every direction, each landing with the razor sharp precision associated with their composers. cascading synths overflow like fizzy drinks, pro-pelling the track along an electronic patchwork of fm synthesis and psy-chedelia. on the remix, i:cube takes the unpredictable rhythm of connection and coaxes its versatile, multiple elements into a timeless slice of boogie house. nurturing the outsider casio feel of the track under a musical heat-lamp, the always forward-thinking frenchman emerges with a cut that could easily soundtrack both sun deck and space station.

chris weeks has been building up the kingbastard catalogue for a long time now, generally taking a self-reliant approach in the underground electronica scene where cd-r releases reign supreme. hes been a key figure on ambidextrous since the label launched back in 2008, and now he s committed to wax with a range of crunched up leftfield sonics for the machine-loving crowd. anxiety is a melodic cut with a house-minded structure, but theres a lot of production acrobatics and compositional swerves taking place within this framework. scatterbrain is more overtly out there, tapping up the kind of heavily processed sounds that producers like paradroid have championed in the past. data loss strike a heavy blow somewhere between dubstep and electro, and data ctrl ups the tempo for a rabble-rousing exercise in mind-bending machine music

fireplays (also spelled -fireplais- on second single) was the moniker chosen in 1981 by italian producer franco pagliaccia foran instant-band project composed by him and a few other musicians. -allein- b/w -hormone- was released in mid-1982, and as can be clearly heard, both tracks clearly show the mutation disco as a genre, started having at the very beginning of the 80s in europe: ablend of electro disco, along with new-wavish elements and some classic era-blueprint sonic elements: synth driven melodies, filtered vocodered choruses, pads, swirling cosmic sounds, cowbells, all topped by a powerful male voice that will give genuineconnoisseurs an exact zeitgeist, along with assured goosebumps.

futile demise ep is an emotional and disconcerting journey through the mind of finnish artist juha puupera. drawing on influences from norwegian black metal, uk sound system culture and italian horror cinema of the 1970s, gruth mixes dark and aggressive tones in his sonic palette. his production methods are often experimental and the style rarely fits into one box as it spans forward-thinking techno, black ambient and doom industrial. with his ep, gruth shapes montevideo-based tormenta electrica label’s first release. of the four tracks featured, two are collaborations with the finnish techno and ambient artist ikola, known for his etherwerks label, while the mysterious helsinki-based violinist and sound designer kujo contributes to the other two.

for anma’s sixth outing we see a coupling of two remarkable talents from either sides of the atlantic, each taking two turns across a side of crisp wax. first up for the us side we have new york based trinidadian deep. personally mentored by chi-town legend ron trent and with his own unique vision of soulful deep house, he has imparted us with two deeply immersive cuts of intense dance floor electricity, laced with his signature percussive club spirituality! for the uk flip, london based will lister is a name to watch out for, a young producer who can boast his first wax release being put out on phonica’s own house label! taking things down a notch on the pitch fader, will has provided two slow-mo jams that reward the attentive listener with his sensuous and detailed production style. building tension meticulously before releasing energy with aplomb and polishing things beautifully with his class jazzy flair. lovingly pressed on 180g vinyl, hand stamped and labelled on a limited run.

in late 2017, thomas gandey and danny mclewin - known from the popular disco-influenced electronic music collective psychemagik - emerged from their studio in bordeaux, france, claiming to have produced an extended musical arrangement, both entitled, and containing the sounds of, the shakuhachi. furthermore, they insisted, for the purposes of this production, and a further album of related arrangements to be released subsequently in conjunction with the successful german record label kompakt, they should be referred to henceforth as ghost vision. shortly thereafter, the audio recordings described by gandey and mclewin came into the possession of noted los angeles degenerate, dj and nymphomaniac citation needed dirty dave, who was quick to relay the hallucinatory qualities of the duo’s productions to fellow dj and trusted hallucinogenic expert paramida, of esteemed german musical imprint love on the rocks. paramida, recognising the innate quality of the sounds presented to her, decided that such recordings warranted immediate release through her audio distribution channel, and not without remixes. quite without thinking of the origins of the instrument which had given the recording its particular sonic distinguishment, and of course, its title, she enlisted the help of two musicians named alex - one from tokyo, and one from kyoto. both alex from tokyo - teaming up with his colleagues isao kumano & kenichi takagi as tokyo black star, known for their prior releases on popular german label innervisions - and his counterpart, alex from kyoto, better known as al kassian, rising tamagotchi on paramidas love on the rocks imprint, and his own label, planet sundae - turned in striking reinterpretations of gandey and mclewin’s composition.

berlins own steffen linck, a multi-instrumentalist known as monolink, announces his debut album amniotic, due april 20th via embassy of music subsidy embassy one. it is the experiential nature of monolink’s music that defies the muddy definition of modern live electronic music. armed with a singular blend of berlin underground culture with the pop-leaning sensibility of american electronica, steffen transports listeners into his own realm of sonic exploration. the music is pillared by emotive guitar tones, analog synth stabs and, for the first time, his own vocals acting as a singular point of departure for this budding talent. amniotic stands as monolinks first complete body of work, following his 2017 ep burning sun via sol selectas, and the end, a collaborative record with acid pauli in 2015.

london band tomaga are back with their fourth release under the hands in the dark banner: memory in vivo exposure. the 12inch ep consists of four original tracks and yet another new musical evolution for the duo. whilst they still use complex layering and harmonic polyrhythms in developing their original approach, this time the sonic tales they have shared are much more cinematic and dreamlike. these visions are locked up into emotionally charged loops to convey the sensation of a dream in which half remembered things become new zones of feeling.

after me planet e are proud to present momentum, a two-track collaboration between carl craig and argentinian live electronic collective klauss. the ep is a result of an unplanned production session at the bands buenos aires studio in february of last year. each running at over ten minutes long and brimming with tension, both tracks use analogue grooves to form a grounding for meditative loops and mind-bending sonic processes to wander.

nice price deal !!! this is the first remix that todd rundgren has ever done for another artist. this is at least what rundgren nerds/experts have told us. anyway, we are of course extremely proud to put this wonderful music on wax. todd rungren has been a big inspiration for lindstrom, so this is a dream come through. also lindstrom has made an extended disco version of quiet place to live exclusive for this 12 inch.

this is music that comes from playing records. dj fiskars have done it for 15 years, subconsciously gathering an assortment of ideas, vibes and moments on the job. it’s only now as he’s starting his career as a recording artist those ideas start to materialize in an accessible form on wax. it’s fair to suggest that the record has a day side and a night side. “filippa” is a somewhat balearic piece: on the shelf it lands somewhere between your omar s records and a mario kart disc. on the flip, “key largo’s” mellow yet banging house grooves drop especially well at the after hours party. the release also marks the dawn of fiskars’ new vinyl-first imprint leave the man in peace with his kit – be on the lookout for more releases in 2018.
