austrian imprint luv shack records is opening up yet another chapter in 2018 by welcoming irish house and techno aficionado and misfit resident andrew johnston aka moodtrax and his own-brand of super warm and brooding sound to their stable. the perfect illusion ep opens up with never can get away, a steamy & dreamy cut that sucks you right in to its lair of thick pads and trancy sequences, which are contrasted by a carefully programmed synth bassline and a stomping house beat. the title track immediately evokes early chicago warehouse jam feelings, with bass sequence, detuned chords and classic drum patterns all oozing of old analogue roland machines. the meticulously arranged percussions section and a set of eerie strings and pads make this one definitely stand out from the crowd. running number starts as a no-nonsense house track, carried by a beefy unisono bassline and a 16th note heavy drum pattern, yet it transcends into 80s territory with the help of a deeply emotional chord progression that might just make you forget you re in a club. berlin duo longhair give running number the luvremix treatment, really digging deep into that chord progression and building a melody and synth-bell infused italo-house track around it that should make this years festival crowd weep and rejoice alike.

sterns edits returns after their well received and recently repressed amadou balake excursions, this time with ben gomori turning his hand to guinea for a third instalment in the series of re-works from the sterns music catalogue of african gems. balla et ses balladins were one of guinea s national orchestras formed as a result of the newly elected president, sekou toures authenticite policy of the early 1960s, which sought to promote guinea s cultural identity following independence from france in 1958. gomori takes the scalpel to two cuts recorded during their years on the state-run syliphone label, making good use of bandleader balla s lively trumpet playing. the gently haunting nyo is taken on a stomping slo-mo chug with a head-nodding bassline and stuttering fx creating a shimmering effect on the tropical guitars, while the rousing horns of wilikabo are laid over with rasping synth bass for a punchy juxtaposition. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and london s ben gomori.

deep, soulful and techy treats by maestro eric ericksson. eric has been releasing his music since the early nineties on labels like fragile and planet e. in resent times eric’s music can also be found on papa records, local talk and freerange, to name a few. an elegant four tracker that starts out with the uncompromising and crude track ”greed”, followed by ”acquiescence” with its sharp and classy shuffles, lush strings and big sounding pads. the flip side starts of with ”totality”. complete, raw sounding with morphing dubby stabs, combined with rough grooves and punching beats. the ep ends off with the pulsating, dreamy and sensitive track ”closure”. nothing is left by chance when eric shows his vision and approach for modern electronic music.

another fierce and unique act from the depths of the glasgow underground appear on optimo music with their debut green door studios recorded four track ep. keyboard player jim mckinven was previously in altered images, worked for many years in martin rushent s genetic studios, was in one dove and previously appeared on optimo music as one half of organs of love. he is however but one component of this transgenerational band. they describe their music far better than we could - “seedy electronica, consisting of 2 basses, electronic drums, synths and dark vocals. inspired by the avant-garde that influenced the electronic music scene of the late 70’s and early 80’s.”

initially paying tribute to the analogue absurdity, sonic diversity and sheer imagination of the early 90s dance music landscape, future four returns after a hiatus of several years, pushing into new eras, machines and ideals with connection. initially a solo project of andy meecham, the brains behind emperor machine, chicken lips, and bizarre inc., connection is the first future four release to feature the contribution of erol alkan as a permanent member, and is a coupled with a remix from i:cube. a veritable powerhouse of synths, vintage drum machines and all man-ner of effects, connection unfolds with minimal tempo and maximum impact, as sequences of unexpected electronics gradually build from every direction, each landing with the razor sharp precision associated with their composers. cascading synths overflow like fizzy drinks, pro-pelling the track along an electronic patchwork of fm synthesis and psy-chedelia. on the remix, i:cube takes the unpredictable rhythm of connection and coaxes its versatile, multiple elements into a timeless slice of boogie house. nurturing the outsider casio feel of the track under a musical heat-lamp, the always forward-thinking frenchman emerges with a cut that could easily soundtrack both sun deck and space station.

relaxers fifth ep is the final edition in the self titled series that began in early 2016. th six tracks are split between viscous, serpentine techno and liminal, dubbed out beatless passages. my reminiscence opens with a shivering groove and a terror-soaked atmosphere before giving way to the more monolithic wormholing of headache. stevie and blister pack drift further afield from the dancefloor, rippling and reforming. each side is closed out with a brief passage: empty promises and health is wealth are evocative and fleeting snapshots.

chris romans has been rolling out crucial electro jams for a number of highly regarded labels since the early 00s. amongst them are touchin bass, shipwrec, frustrated funk and central processing unit, so that tells you everything you need to know about the level he s operating at as 214. now he comes to 20/20 vision with some body-poppin jams of the highest order, broadening the tech house label s remit to embrace the thriving electro scene with one of its most vital practitioners. potential events is a brooding, atmospheric affair while windeye draws on a more playful, detroit indebted palette of sounds. radioactive man remixes windey- with a steady, finely detailed approach, and then back to sine finishes the record off with another snappy salvo of funky drums and bubbling synths.

three years since profane’s seminal album v.illan mills was recorded for inperspective and it’s long overdue that he returns to the label. this canadian native’s unique style that somehow fuses the hip hop sensibilities of j.dilla, the jazz/funk ideologies of danny breaks and the experimental truth of squarepusher has been a breath of fresh air in recent years on the underground d&b scene and these two new cuts from him are no exception. the experimentally epic breakbeat off tempo monstrosity of drughmada is a heady, giddy tapestry of beats and breaks with a sleazy sample and panic led overtones. west newton views is a darker more minimal affair. a clunky, dubstep vibe which maintains moody intensity throughout. tense and suspenseful. the other side sees the triumphant return of rome’s lynch kingsley. this young, precocious talent has been a good friend to the label for a number of years and after making waves with his debut eden ep it was only a matter of time before his return. we are pleased to present void , a dark journey through the breakbeat, sci-fi escapism of early 90 s d&b which in time develops into a deep, break laden workout with gorgeous synths and fantasy atmospheres. a joy to behold.

steve bicknell is currently having a moment. when you look at his recent releases, his growing number of gigs, his eye-catching collaborations and his new record label 6dimensions, it seems he’s feeling particularly inspired. resident advisor steve bicknell has been an integral and highly-important segment of the underground electronic scene since the early ’90s and has continued to expand his musical horizons through producing, promoting and playing” hyponik “bicknell has shaped a scene from the shadows for decades thanks to the legendary lost parties he co-ran, which brought djs like jeff mills and robert hood to the uk for the first time, as well as his own production work the vinyl factory an underground leader announces his return. his 6dimensions label seems to have reinvigorated him the arts desk.

mannequin records is proud to present a trilogy of reissues from the avantgarde italian-born producer doris norton, -norton computer for peace- (1983), -personal computer- (1984), -artificial intellingence- (1985). . apple s first music -endorsement- and roland affiliate, doris norton is one of the most important women pioneer in the use of synths and in the early electro / computer music. norton is the wife of antonio bartoccetti, progressive rock guitarist, and mother of the musician and techno producer rexanthony. as a teenager, she was drawn to medieval, renaissance and baroque music, not to mention quantum physics, differential equations, organic chemistry, the experimentalism of john cage and animated movie soundtracks

more disco meets deep house from that guy bobby analog on his third release from his body fusion imprint - this one has been getting some spicy reactions in the club. strong nyc influences from henry street for the a-side with a little hat tip to the darker, deeper feels of chez, ron and kerri on the flip. we hope there’s something for all hours of the early morning on here.

i wonder is the first vinyl release on sean mccabes excellent good vibrations music label. originally featured on nathan adams audio therapy lp (2013) on tribe records, i wonder demonstrates nathan s ability to write real heartfelt songs spectacularly delivered & oozing soul. the original, which saw early support from louie vega, dj spinna, mood ii swing, joey negro and kevin hedge, is now released as a single for the first time on sean mccabe s good vibrations music label. complete with brand new remixes from the one & only louie vega, and a killer late night dub from sean - this is the real deal

kingswood drive and accidental return were an early teaser of this new set. displaying their signature analogue sounds and arpeggios, alongside broken beats and soul, you wouldn t be alone in hearing the influences of dam funk, herbie hancock or bugz in the attic coming through on these two. elsewhere more jittery, playful rhythms underpin croydon rooftop café culture. as well as in the calming and ethereal prints on the heath, a subtle tribute to mutual hero prince, who passed away on the unusually prolific day this and two other, currently unreleased, tracks were written and recorded. throughout the ep the duo nod at their london home from the -heath- to kingswood drive and more obviously croydon itself. the sound of south london is threaded throughout this record with pride. even down to the mechanical sunset sound of ep finale thorns, capturing some of the essence of the studio view over london from their high point on the hill in thornton heath. the first ep from albert s favourites co-founders and synth-production duo modified man focused on throwing out heavy editing, recording music with as few processes as possible and grabbing performances as single takes. blending warped cassette recordings that touched upon early jazz-funk/brit-funk influences with the energy of broken beat and experimental electronica, won them support from patrick forge, osunlade, thris tian, yam who? and titeknots to name a few. since that release they premiered new track thorns live on boiler room, going on to deliver a full, three-hour live performance and dj set for the infamous global community. they also provided remixes for dele sosimi, amp fiddler, makadem & behr and hector plimmer, meanwhile, busily preparing a series of four, six-track vinyl eps which will be released over the next 18 months.

emotional rescue and jamwax ends their capo disco series by returning to glen adams and his cover of bob marley’s classic. the early 70s lee perry produced original raw sound is taken to the disco reggae dancefloors of the early 80s with a bottom heavy jam, while his capo crew works a killer dub flipside.

“yuxtaposición” is a recently unearthed treasure recorded by a tight italian trio in miami during the early seventies. until now, this music has only been heard in office backgrounds, tv commercials and movie soundtracks. but the perseverance of an admirer brought about its first-ever release on the italian schema label. imagine hearing a 1972-era cal tjader quartet without cal tjader and you get an idea of what to expect. it’s slightly latin, lightly funky and truly enjoyable. “yuxtaposición” offers enough to interest a jazz listener. but the sounds heard in these 35 minutes are really better appreciated as mood music. lead man, cabildo, composer of all ten tunes here, has a knack for writing jazzy little hooks that launch his tasty, well-crafted keyboard solos. often alternating fender rhodes and piano within the same song, his playing maintains a hypnotic command that recalls bob james’ cti style. electric bassist bobby fares and percussionist max ronnie make subtle, supportive contributions that serve only to enhance cabildo’s sound. there’s a funny thing about yuxtaposición too. it’s kind of like developing an addiction. you may not pay much attention to it at first. but before you know it, you’re hooked. you need to hear it to be satisfied. a very nice surprise.

r&s newcomer karim sahraoui delivers an ep of deep, emotive techno that draws on the rich legacy of detroit while staying relevant for the modern era. sahraoui is a globetrotting seeker of musical truth spending time in malaysia, italy and spain as well as his native france, he recorded in the early 2000s to some acclaim as djinxx, releasing prolifically for delsin, cocoon, f-com bedrock, and ovum amongst others. in 2009 he took a couple of years out from the industry, travelling to malaysia to find himself. in 2011 a chance meeting reconnected sahraoui with derrick may, who he originally met in the late 90s. may was reactivating transmat and persuaded karim to let him release his music, but on the condition it be under his own name. the resulting pair of eternal life eps in 2014 and 2016 marked his rich return to form glorious melodic, contemplative techno in the classic motor city mode. his plenitude ep for r&s builds on similar positive themes - from the percolating arpeggios and mystic melodies of spy of the desert, to the anthemic jazzy techo paen of born again or the aching symphonic build of before the 2nd coming its clear that after decades in the business sahraouis talent is only growing rather than diminishing. i wanted to give it more spirituality, musicality and roots with the choice of the sounds. going back in the past and transcribe everything with visionary fusions, sahraoui explains.

kalbata has turned his hand to many styles over the years, not least the excellent soundsystem explorations of congo beat the drum, but on this second release for his label brush & broom, he s decided to fling himself into the fiery pit of acid while paying tribute to 90s motocross bikes. honda is dripping with 303, punctuated by a twitchy set of drums, while yamaha takes a diversion into moodier territory, letting hazy chords set the tone for an energised but defiantly heads down acid workout. suzuki is a bit spicier, capturing the essence of up-for-it early trax records but edging it into more hypnotic, looped up territory. toyota finishes the ep off with an atonal bleep out with an electro undercarriage

tom ellard is the creative force behind australian post-punk band severed heads. in 1982 he self-released two cassettes of solo material, “80s cheesecake” and “snappy carrion”. these cassettes document the transitional period between the early experimental severed heads’ albums “clean” and “blubberknife” before the start of something new with “since the accident”. with the advent of the then new roland tb-303 bass synthesizer, a machine synonymous with the acid house sound, tom began to write more beat driven material. the rhythms are made by a tr-808 drum machine, kawai s100f and sh-1 synthesizers, plus various televisions, radios, cassette decks and pedals. two songs from these cassettes would later appear on the b-side of the “dead eyes opened” single.

matt flanagan has been making music as defekt, ess and tinfoil for the past few years, so who better to put out the debut release on first cut? we decided early on that there was no point in repeating his admittedly fine back catalogue, so matt went off one evening and did a 30-minute live jam on his machines. there was no real plan, but between us, we picked the three best bits, which you now own. then we had to come up with a name. initially, we toyed with the idea of calling it ‘fekt’ but then decided that only a local audience would appreciate the joke and that it wouldn’t travel well. octal step then emerged as the clear favourite. we sealed the deal to release ‘toner head’ over a cup of takeaway coffee on a bench in the stephen’s green cente in dublin. and why is gunter walraff on the other side of this sheet? well, he seems like a cool guy. plus he’s german and has a moustache - what’s there not to like about that?
