as one of the most prolific hip hop producers of all time madlib collaborated with different artists and recorded own songs under different pseudonyms. during his outstanding year 2003 he released the crown on his work, the remix album shades of blue. the album untinted contains the source material for the project and is a fantastic intro to compare all the material from both recordings. it s a great dose of jazz in which madlib focuses on the soul and jazz stuff he used for the recordings. with songs by among others herbie hancock, horace silver and donald byrd the 12-track album gives you an indication of the way madlib created his pieces. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

powerpill promises nothing but good times from an unknown source, from the day glo label art to the playful, upfront techno cut into the wax. this is no nonsense club stuff, leading in with the chirpy acid strut of -track 1- before getting tangled up in the modulating electro lines of -track 2-. -track 3- has a more overtly 90s vibe to it, calling to mind the early uk techno scene in its bleeping leads and dubby undercurrents. -track 4- finishes the record off with the toughest jam of the lot, but it s still a nimble affair that shuns the trend towards pitch-black techno and instead embraces a spread of melodic threads throughout the track.

obscure dutch private pressing from 1977. laid-back instrumental psychedelic / progressive sounds with jazz-funk-groove and abstract / experimental / latin-indigenous touches. stoned homemade atmosphere with treated / distorted electric & acoustic guitars, flute, electric piano, primitive drum machines / homemade electronics. much in the vein of the experimental-underground scene of france & germany during the early 70s but actually recorded and released in holland.

this is the third ep by dutch post-techno project monocorpse... his style is evident by now: minimal and dark... a sort of doom techno for the freaked-out dance floor... but this new ep also feels like a soundtrack... rather moody and haunting music which would fit perfect in thrillers and psychological dramas... despite all of this there are some real dance floor tracks on this ep... stuff monocorpse never delivered before in this way...

the second outing from yaleesa hall in this two-piece ep series on will & ink. the 13th release on the label packs a visceral punch across four fresh tracks that are perfect for dance floor deployment. first track daisy wright kicks off with minimal but impactful drum rhythms that eventually get cut up with tumbling sirens, hammering hits and blasts of dirty noise. it s hugely physical stuff, while follow up barbara adams is more stripped back and mysterious. icy hi hats tick, howling synths sound bring a sadness and the depth of stern field as sounds play out above, below and all around you is truly standout. harriet brown then sinks into a deeper electro groove with spangled bass, before a vip mix then slows things down to a dread fuelled dub wise swagger that eventually breaks out into oscillating, stuttering rave madness. it makes for one hell of a thrilling ride and kicks off a promising year for both yaleesa hall and the will & ink label.
