berlin/zurich based label tardis is back, enthusiastically dancing out of the studio into the dawn of a much wished-for summer. for their second release, tardis has enlisted paul mac aka jorge zamacona who hoists in not one but three rough killers.

they come from livorno, italy but these four young men seem to have landed from detroit in the mid-90s. raksasa is the debut ep of the talkin robots who have been remixed by the dextrous brain of jerome sydenham who has once again shown immeasurable talent with soul research.
analogic and definitely old school, is the sound of the original mix while sydenhams mix is dark and refined: deep techno for all hours.

opener getting run down loops up a nagging hip hop sample over skittering dukey beats and washes drifting pads and spacey keys over the top for a hypnotic late night groover. reach out goes at a calmer pace, but revolves around intense builds, insistent polyrhythms and detroity riffs for a bit of hypnagogic drama. on memix duties, om unit does what you hope hes going to do, injecting reach out with seemingly infinite swathes of space and bottom end, looping about at his own pace, but with that constant sense of om unit purpose. nphonix closes out proceedings with a tweaky, rubbery acid style workout that will find friends in bass and house camps.

with the tropical interlune lp, a wonderful package full of high-level soulful analog house grooves (reminding of early theo parrish / 3chairs stuff), rio padices purpose is to bring us into a journey to celebrate 70s atmospheres and sounds. far away from the common precepts of modern edm but not forgetting his dance roots, his efforts lead us to a concept of funky and organic cuts assembled in a wise perspective of his musical evolution.

american born but europe based producer dia serves up the next two tracker on her own wip label. the dj also runs her own event space under the same name as well as the twelveinchesoflove label and is someone who has proved herself adept in the field of heartfelt and instrument rich house music of the course of her career since first emerging in 2007. brightly coloured and full of dancefloor purpose, this is some of the classiest feel good house you will hear for a while.

revivra is back on gamm with two seriously well produced re-edits (or remixes?) on the soulful boogie tip. just like last time this is just not some quick 5 min fixes but hand crafted reworks that takes the original tracks to the next level with loads of added live elements. the a-sides take on midways set it out is so good it almost makes the original sounds like the remix. with a beautiful live string intro it explodes into a proper boogie winner that easily could have been produced by any of the big producers from late 70s. on the flip revivra goes back to his deep love for marvin with +11 min excursion of mercy mercy me. epic is an understatement!

every now and then, a record comes along…this is one of those occasions. but...it is not any old record, it is a new one. specifically, the new 12inch single from sundown drive, brought to you by mind fair and rogue cat sounds. moving on from the body and soul that embodied their first trip, sd transcend you to the annals of deep clubland and melodically twist your heart strings with an early morning flutter and a tantric tension. the meandering-yet-purposeful piano finding its feet later in the proceedings this time, but rising to full effect, leaving only the dub to knock us sideways into a beautifully-simplistic dark alley of spring reverbs, synthesized prophecy and the voices in ya head telling you to give it up.

one year old and four releases deep, retreat present its first 2010 offering with the long awaited second volume of the treats series. featuring 3 exclusive tracks from session victim and quarion, treats vol.2 showcases the producers ability to move beyond the traditional house sound, incorporating more soul and disco influences as well as coming up with a few surprises! session victim start things off with the magical danish daughters, a slow groover that begins in a gentle but assured way, sparking your interest with its infectious guitar and piano loop until the beat kicks in and makes you irrepressibly shake that thang. adding a synth line here or a bell sound there, the duo keep the pace of the track steady until a startling guitar riff breaks it down, giving way to the original loop to return in its full glory, complete with extra organ dashes!

after their hot contributions for treats vol. 2, session victim prove indeed that they are on the roll with a funkafied and no holds barred ep that pays homage to their hip-hop roots. move me so starts rather simply, with just a guitar and a vocal, but you can hear a moving bassline and distant rhodes chords creeping up from the background. two minutes into the track and theres still no kick drum, although the level of excitement produced by the magnetic groove is almost unbearable. a filtered drum break finally gives way to a four to the floor beat that should turn any dancefloor into a frenetic party. the track builds with high energy, as the pounding bassline seems to be directly lifted from an early 90s hip-hop classic. the breakdown sees the vocal/guitar loop being played differently until the second part shifts gear and brings more surprises in the mix with the intro rhodes chords coming in and out.

nick lapiens debut release as metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. a skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. that initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. this, his second release as metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. the titular track on the a side is a deep, psychedelic groover. melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by lapien with optimum restraint. equally pensive and gorgeous, the flood serves as a machine’s beat-less foil on the reverse. made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of jean michel jarre’s more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. expect to hear more from lapien here at sequencias. he has many more dark corners left unexplored.

more than six years into his career after several eps and a full album, there isn’t much known about ben gibson, and he is clearly keeping it that way with intent. gibson first emerged on jeff mills’ experimental, influential 6277 sublabel but then again vanished into the ether, he only reappeared three years later on perc trax, even more surprisingly with a full-length. since then, he’s gone on to steadily more notice with perc’s imprint, sect records, and most recently m_rec ltd in spite of the continuing lack of information. exposure isn’t the most important thing for us at chronicle though, and after hearing these five tracks, we saw exactly what it is that drew mills to him from the beginning. it is a sound that we find a perfect fit for the techno futurism of our chronicle series, and here we offer a platform for gibsons more sci-fi, ethereal sounding material, exclusively on vinyl for the fifth edition of our sublabel.

character is techno as you can expect it from deetron: deep but uplifting, refined but powerful. the b side drives on a catchy vocal and goes more toward the (deep) house spectrum, but with a punchy kick to keep that dancefloor going. swiss funk!

londons powell works with opposites, in a way that is delightfully disconcerting. his tracks, on the surface, seem relatively uniform - but listen closer, or at punishing volume, and they teem with detail: wiry guitars, sinister yelps, synth figures that fizz like bubbles through sparkling water. across two eps in 2012 for his own diagonal label and one for death of rave in 2013, he has established himself as one of the uks most unique electronic musicians.

for the fourth and final round of the stallions compilation, bosconi records closes in style with athena: muscular four tracks that run between detroit and chicago sounds, dub and ambient aiming at the discovery of new, unexplored horizons. selected big stallions, which feature the best of their talent trying to cover up unknown journey and territories but leading to surprising results. the oliverwho factory with a rousing mind free, nick anthony simoncino of an entrancing and picturesque tramonto techno, nicholas with a soaring and disruptive from somewhere else and ennio colaci on beautifully nuanced hinterland, close one of the most interesting art projects in recent years increasingly raising even more bosconi records in the olympus of globality.

here lies the final chapter in the first testament of shocks, and as with the previous three releases, were granted no mercy. a-side tracks trajl and contagious are a full fledged assaults on the psyche, taunting with just enough melody to convince us of musicality, but never really rising from of the swamp theyre stewed in.the b side closer klamata could be seen as a comedown, but after a short while you realize that youve been led only deeper, left in a state of total disarray.

mushrooms project are the kings of the mid tempo and they do deep, druggy, chunky, sometimes more balearic, sometimes just more freaky music better than anyone else. check! their approach is hallucinating and all encompassing and is made up of the analogue sounds of guitar, bass, synth and percussive layers to create a dirty but unique background. their new undergrass album is a melting pot of all their influences and is a straight up journey through the mesmerizing and unusual minds of the mushrooms. undergrass is released on gatefold double vinyl with a bonus 10 inch featuring remixes of 16823 by brennan green and mudd. brennan takes his mix into the electro boogie sounds of an 80s new york while mudd brings out the guitar, layering up his own production with equally devastating effect.

spanish dj and producer uner is looking back on an impressive but intense career. after first milestones on top notch labels like saved and diynamic he scored even more points with his last releases on the Überlabels cadenza and visionquest which made him one of the most wanted minimal-techno-producers around

bill youngman has been around for almost 20 years with releases on legendary labels like serotonin, scandinavia and tresor. he crossed many styles from melodic electro to really, really harsh techno, but recently he seems to have found his very own personal style. the music he released on killekill in the last two years show a very singular approach to techno and electro. percussive, deep, melodic, toolish – all at the same time.

ms. smooth socal soul meets mr. nocal dirtybird swagger and they have a baby together. that baby is justin jay and at 19 years old he is already making his 3rd appearance on dirtybird. i have a feeling this is justin jays breakout record. the a-side static is at 119 bpm and will sweep you up then rip your pants off. but even when you get hit with the massive bassline, an old school anchor stays intact. waves b-side has a classic deep dirtybird feeling, with tuned 808s and a surprising melodic element showing off the sweeter side of this up and coming young gun. justin jay has more potential than anyone i have heard in a while and if he continues to play like he has been lately, he has a long dj career ahead of him as well.

olin inaugurates the god particle party into orbit with the title track. sassmouths remix stays true to the original, but adds organic percussive touches. the b goes into darker warehouse territory riding between gritty punch & deep groove.

samuli kemppi may have begun in warm house climes as the duo sam & gigi, but he has since found his niche and fame sound tracking the deep and icy black recesses of space. 2009s komisch debut, deep space helsinki ep, birthed the galactic signature that would come to define his solo techno output for labels like prologue, mote-evolver and perc trax, meanwhile cementing his stylistic meanderings to a single, albeit flexible, narrative. parallax of one second ep is samuli kemppis third outing on m rec ltd, after the full cyclic model ep and remix inclusion on ben gibsons more than milk, and sees the fin plundering the astronomic theme once again with stellar sci-fi precision.

berlin based quell aka nikolaos raptis, is a relatively new name to the house scene, but the up and comer has been striking chords as of late with releases for the likes of kolour, tsuba and ibadan.
