after releases on saints & sonnets and stay underground, it pays, berlin artist quell aligns with the mil label for the four track tomahawk which further cements his reputation for no-nonsense, stripped back house and techno music. size 7 sets the tone, a dark, underground roller with a trilling bassline and acidy bleeps that sits nicely alongside the shimmering chords and deep dubby vibes of monolame. on the b-side, harhead leads with fluid percussive rhythms and sequential kick drums to give an immediate grooveintrinsic melody. the energetic, grooveled tone continues into the last track, where are they now, a dark, technofused stripped back rhythm track with an acid tinged-feel.

it is not about knowledge only, academic or otherwise, it is and has always been more about understanding each thing for what it is, what it stands for and its origins. this is definitely the case with quell, who has been a friend of the these days records since the very beginning. after the artists collaboration with argy under the these days in-house project moniker >club lonely<, this is his first personal ep for the label. drawing influences from a few distant chronologically, yet classic styles of dance music, starting from disco-flavored house all the way to friendly nods at kerri chandler, ron trent, chez damier and the earlier period of new york citys ibadan records, >perception ep< blends all of them together in a most elegant and mature way. amidst the plethora of the house music sound recent revival, quell presents a very complete and solid proposal, which shows that he adores as much as he comprehends the connections between the past, present and future of this music

(a nod to supertramp s crisis? what crisis?) is one of those albums. its silken-smooth production, irresistible grooves, funk-tinged guitars, lush soundscapes and general glowing presence could easily lead one to believe that have dug up a lost disco gem from the 1970s. however, behind the disco-pop gleam lies eerie dystopian sci-fi ruminations of a futuristic bent and tones that can often feel as french as they do asian or african. this sort of cross-continental exploration is an expansion on bvo s previous two eps, the man behind the organisation, adrien durand, says. -i tried to continue the musical expedition between dystopian science-fiction haunted africa - plus haitian vaudou on -soleil dieu- - and futuristic asia. addressing, in a double entendre manner, some of the political issues that i am sensitive to.- in fact the jungle in question in the album s title is a metaphorical one and one that creates a vast series of environments for durand to explore such subjects as world trade, utopian ideals and themes of idols, as well as of time and communication. however, one will need to speak french to decipher such explorations, as well as shake off the natural impulse to move with every glorious beat on its 13 tracks, of which are moved along by maud nadal and agathe bonitzer s golden vocals.

modular expansion is a fresh new techno label, based in athens - greece. the labels first release (a limited white colored edition 12 inch) comes from the head of m.e., george apergis. the debut single features the track >quelle<, a detroit-ish techno/club oriented track, with a distinctive chord progression and solid bassline. the release also includes 3 striking remixes from international artists.
the first one comes from the acknowledged german artist johannes volk (exploration), who re-creates a dub version of the original track. the second remix comes from the rising scene of paris and zadig (construct re-form/ sino), who evolves the track into a groovy and deep experience. last but not least, the remix of irish technohead lee holman (kawl) introduces a darker approach, setting a minimal atmosphere with a unique vocal.
