rivulet records are continuing their release just where the compilation at the beginning of the year left us. again bringing 4 artists together on one release shifting between dusty, mellow house and some how twisted techno. peonies from russia, who has been releasing tapes on his own label „summer night“ since 1 year, sets the mood for the record with his track „soft light“ which sounds almost like a dim, fading memory of a club night full of classy house records. the rework by ital, the head behind „lovers rock“ from new york, builds up the mood in a complete different, driving and technoid atmosphere. the b-side is the first cooperation between two very old friends, berni from trier and jonas palzer from berlin, both part of portray records. their tracks are playing with the same kind of hauntology as the a—side, building up a sound that is familiar and distant in the same way - referring to old records by boards of canada as well as to the contemporary sound of „house“ at its best meaning.

if you love contemporary minimal music, then you are certainly familiar with the greek artist stathis leontiadis. with his bands human puppets, exetix and plexiglas this musician became one of the stars of the genre. now he is back with doric. with this solo project he already released a single and an album on fabrika and a 10- on domestica. the new release is once again a 10-, this time on peripheral minimal. doric uses a special concept. the a-side is the so-called asleep side and is about loneliness: music that sounds paranoid. sleep of reason is almost unbearable, it s madness driven by minimal electronics. everything is very danceable, but this is the dance of madness. the minimal sound comes straight from the 80s. over my dreamssounds a bit like the early parade ground. simply great! head against the wall (a title that needs little explanation) is slow and compelling.

get on down is a heavyweight slice of storming jamaican disco-reggae heat from the legendary studios of miami s tk disco empire. king sporty s version may not have been as well known as connie cases electro laden later 1982 version (also produced by sporty) but the perfect marriage of disco stylings and sports jamaican roots meant the original 1979 version was a cult classic in underground deep disco circles. over 35 years since get on down was released the keepers of the tk disco vaults have given permission for some of their classics and lesser known gems to be respectfully tweaked by contemporary producers and dj s who fully understand the lineage of the label and the music contained within. stepping up and get his hands dirty is none other than london dwelling, wolf music man medlar. a regular face behind the turntables all over the world medlar has lovingly freaked king sportys anthem for the modern dance-floor, extending the right parts in just the oh so right way, dubbing out parts that needed just a smidgen of echo here and there and generally making the track irresistible to dj s with its lovely long beat led intro. these are extremely tasteful edits, done with respect and reverence over 2 parts old school style. look out for those low flying dubbed out vox and lazer beams too, powerful stuff! this is only one of many underground disco classics that the mighty miami based tk disco label brought to the world, reimagined for 2016s dance-floor, officially sanctioned in conjunction with henry stone music / tk disco. file under - classic / essential!

andrzej nowak is a polish early computer music composer who never found proper place in official contemporary music world. tracks produced between 1987 and 1994 as a score for never screened animation movies (the producer didn’t like them). lines of simple sounds, interrupted by primitive electronic trumpet and other fake instruments. are you sure it’s a film score? what was the thing that producer didn’t like? weird harmonies or too much rhythm?

one of the most accomplished and celebrated bands in the field of contemporary, unclassified pop music. almamegretta are masters in combining a wide range of elements such as dub, funk, reggae, world and electronica, all filtered through their own deep southern italian roots. the band from naples is now back with a new album, mixed by the dub master adrian sherwood, who had already been involved in their mid-nineties masterpiece “sanacore”. this new work consists of ten tracks, nine originals plus a well chosen cover of an old neapolitan hit by nino d’angelo transformed into a lovers rock style song. almamegretta’s original line up of gennaro t tesone, paolo polcari and raiz is augmented by a great list of collaborators and the result is a strong and multi layered set made of afro-funk numbers, reggae ballads, and other riddims, while the british dub influence remains central within the group’s wide sound palette. the title “ennenne”, which means no name, is inspired by the acronym used for those who are born from unknown parents. the right title for such a highly dense picture based on the combination of contemporary sounds and social topics.

peter michael hamel emerged from the 70s krautrock scene dreaming of “the blue flower growing between the milestones on the road to a future world-music”. a truly visionary artist who worked and studied with john cage, morton feldman and terry riley, his 1980 colours of time lp - an epic, sprawling, 22-minute saga - was hailed by the guardian’s rob fitzpatrick as “an absolute masterpiece of skull-bursting, synth-led ambient minimalism”. thirty six years on, astral industries reinterpret hamel s original vision with remixes from two contemporary heavyweights - wolfgang voigt and rod modell (aka deepchord). each expansive interpretation invites you to step outside of reality and into an alternative imagination of hamel s future world, spiralling into the colours and slowly out of time itself. original artwork by theo ellsworth and a massive thanks to peter michael hamel & eckart rahn.

kid flicks is the music project started by greek producer and songwriter nickos devisis. highly in?uenced by the bright side of contemporary athenian life, multiculturalism and the internet culture, kid flicks created a unique sound which draws from various genres and styles. from electronic to sample-based music to psych pop to world music, the album full of upbeat pop melodies, explosive percussion and greek, middle eastern and african music references. kid flicks third album kid flicks and first with an updated 3-piece line up, will be released by klik records in greece and wordandsound in the rest of europe on late june. on december 2015 they showcased at glimps festival in belgium and their creative process and involvement in the athenian music scene were one of the subjects of cbc arts documentary series interrupt this program. they currently work with brooklyn-based pr agency drunken piano (carpark, yep roc) and booker jj pallis (boogarins).

moscow records’ first release of 2016 comes from label boss archie hamilton, remixed by romanian talent ali nasser. the title track on the a side is an uplifting piece of minimal house blending a familiar synth line with a trippy vocal and his characteristic groove. ali nasser’s remix on the flip brings together both classic percussion and synth elements, in a contemporary style, constructing a timeless house classic.

next up on will & ink is a second release from yeleesa hall & malin, hot on the heels of their last collaborative effort, lucas, at the end of 2015. once again the mysterious hall and amsterdam/paris based oscillate music boss cook up some hard hitting house that is sonically inventive. opener first carol has hulking kicks and hits and a writhing, monstrous sounding synth line that brings real rawness and energy to the four-four beats all around it. some spooky little beat-less passage of eerie industrial sounds appear before second carol again slips into a well swung and purposeful groove. this one is rubbery and rolling, with dubbed out chords riding up and down and airy hats adding a sense of scale. another ep of contemporary club music of the highest order.

after inaugurating the ‘opera’ sub-series of his outis music label with the sublime omonimo double lp this april, dino sabatini has invited some choice allies to help define the vocabulary and expand the vision of the new imprint. the aforementioned album, which wove together sabatini’s atmospheric conjuring skill with the piano flourishes of antonello salis, already exhibits the labels commitment to dismantling the either-or logic of contemporary genres by successfully merging a variety of supposedly irreconcilable styles, talents, and worldviews (e.g. both mythological and the technological perspectives). the follow-up ep, concentrica, draws on the material from omonimo and delivers it into the hands of additional remixers in order to continue the outis opera voyage.

with his project fred und luna musician rainer buchmüller (sugar ray buckmiller) from karlsruhe, germany is paying tribute to his favourite electronic oriented music by using its characteristics like repetition and beautiful melodies, putting them in a contemporary context and preserving their subtle and seductive charm. fred und luna play their self described elektrokraut (concerning songs that are basically kraut mixed with electronic elements) and krautelektro (which is elektro mixed with kraut elements). they live in karlsruhe which, like düsseldorf, lies next to the river rhine. perhaps karlsruhe is the new (neu) düsseldorf, with fred und luna (as pioneers/vanguard).

drawing on a rich well of influences from sufi and shamanic african trance music, irish and eastern european folk music, to steve reich and philip glass and more contemporary electronica influences, their music is built around deceptively simple sounding ideas that are lent power through the use of repetition and rhythmic loops. they have been compared to both portico quartet and gogo penguin for the way in which they navigate the choppy waters between contemporary dance music and jazz.

the uk s newly inaugurated future primitive label holds a candle to its name by unearthing two leo anibaldi productions from deep within the roman s voluminous back catalogue. the two-track 12- debut sees anibaldi provide the label with a contemporary stretched edit of 1994 production -fusion 1-, a cut lifted from the aeon ep originally released on the now defunct italian label, acv. future primitive has also given ambient number -evocation part ii- a full remaster and b-side privileges, honouring an esoteric production from anibaldi s void lp that was originally released on aphex twin s rephlex label in 1996.

two years ago i played at studio 9 in vilnius, lithuania. the following day i missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend linus, who took me to the contemporary art centre. it was there i spotted a book named ‘rojus’, that linus told me translated as ‘paradise’. the word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. a few days after returning home, i turned on to a national geographic documentary named ‘designed to dance’, explaining the courtship rituals of birds of paradise. as i watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birds’ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. this gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these birds of paradise and their habitat. thus, rojus. leon vynehall 2016

new release on eye teeth by israel vines featuring the hybrid techno bass electro anthem “gatekeepers”, the dark techno gem “unscathed” and the ambient “repose in dub”. we started this sublabel as way of exploring pure and experimental techno in an entirely contemporary context (where it often uses historical lenses and a wider musical context). this is techno from detroit and america, not detroit techno. we would like to see american techno evolve, and this new imprint is an attempt to be a catalyst in that arena. this ep was pre-mastered by neel at enisslab studio in rome. the vinyl was mastered by carl at trutone and pressed at archer records in detroit.

fresh, genre bending interpretations from barac (romania) and dbridge (uk). these two inspiring producers provide their modern touch to the contemporary dancefloor continuum: dbridge offers an up-to-date hybrid that straddles the line between techno and breakbeat, while baracs extended mix is a deep and hypnotic journey through space. dbridge represents a milestone when it comes to uk dance music. being part of the legendary drum and bass group bad company in the late 90s, running his extensive label exit records, and regularly releasing on boddikas nonplus, metalheadz, as well as r&s, he has gained an enviable reputation as a specialist with a modern take on techno and breakbeat variations.

while being a rare patrick adams and billy nichols production, mary clark’s “take me i’m yours” has in recent years become one of the most celebrated disco tracks by contemporary deejays. this borderline gospel-disco gem has all the elements of a timeless disco cut, a driving bass line, powefully arranged strings and horns, but most importantly, a very soulful performance by mary clark. like many of peter brown’s “affliate” labels, little is known about them or the artists recorded. originaly released in 1980 on ‘la shawn’, it is rumored to have been no more than 200 records originally pressed, making this one of the most sought 12 inches among collectors.

in 1972 francois de roubaix and bernard maitre composed together the music of a tv series for children presented by puppets, called the onix. the musical oddity here released by weme records is a part of this ost. this piece of music demonstrates once again that francois de roubaix was in touch with all kinds of music of his time, including contemporary music. in this experimental track we can feel the influences of the composer pierre henry, an other explorer of unknown sounds. on the b side jodey kendrick makes his own interpretation of this music with current tech and sounds while keeping the atmosphere and fantasy of the original sound. attention non music !

after moods, an album full of fantastic and contemporary designs of electronic music which constantly flirted with modern classic designs hildenbeutel releases the remix-ep, all produced by himself like he often used to do in former days. the result is a package of five remixes (four on vinyl, the download version with a bonusstrack). you can hear the neo trance-influences of artists such as kink or others as well as the fine feel for the understanding of peaks and arrangements without gimmicky showing off. at the latest with the driving and upbuilding groove of lost - retouched the shaman in the desert peeps out from behind the cactus and offers psychedlische gifts. henceforward it is: everybody for himself and all together.

french label d3 elements returns to chicago for its next ep, this time looking to the assured house talents of hakim murphy for three tracks of raw, dense grooves right from the heart of the windy city. opener boxbeat is a curious, freaky jam with bobbing percussive hits, wonky, pixel thin synth lines and free roaming pads that wrap the whole thing in a nice sense of spaced-out serenity. taste o rainbow has a much more firmly planted kick drum that pounds away uninterrupted below a free flowing brew of modulate synth sounds. it s expertly reduced and masterfully reserved and is sure to send dance floors wild as a result. the flipside cut freshness has pinging drums and a big, frazzled bass line as slithering chords rain down the face. musical yet jacking, cosmic yet propulsive, it is a perfectly contemporary chicago house sound that rounds out a fine ep from one of the best in the game.
