considered by many as -the motown of salsa,- fania records is probably the most transcendental label in the history of latin music. by bringing together the eclectic vision of dominican bandleader johnny pacheco with the business savvy of impresario jerry masucci, fania created a sound: the apex of tropical music, combined with the swing of big band jazz and the gritty vibe of american r&b. the label provided an artistic heaven for a young generation of musicians who were inspired to experiment with new musical formats. the albums recorded by willie colón, héctor lavoe, rubén blades and eddie palmieri from the early 70s to the mid- 80s went beyond the parameters of so-called -salsa- - taking latin music to unsuspected levels of sophistication. when you think latin soul you relate to a mélange of r&b and mambo rhythms intermixed culturally by and for the youth of america. it was 1974, and a brash youngster by the name of ralfi pagan walked into the offices of fania records and demanded to be heard. fania president jerry masucci allowed ralfi that opportunity, and ralfi auditioned for jerry right there in his office. it took only a few moments for masucci to realize that he was in the company of his newest recording artist, he put ralfi in touch with recording director, johnny pacheco, who hurried him into the recording studio for ralfi�s first fania recording session.

a chance encounter at university during the acid house summer of �88 and subsequent bonding over baby ford�s �oochy koochy� established a life-long friendship between leicester lads, jimi o�callaghan and al green. inspired by the sounds of detroit, early ny house like murk and masters at work and the emerging uk sounds of lfo, orbital and aphex twin, the pair began djing and making music as the wild geese. their first ep, �the wild geese ep�, was released in 1994 on their own giddy goose recordings imprint. the guys pressed 500 copies and, with jimi�s connections made interning with pete tong�s ffrr, sold copies direct to london shops. the record sported packaging designed to look like an american 12� and an accompanying press release attributed the ep to a fictitious dj duo hailing from wisconsin. rave reviews followed and a distribution deal was struck with vital uk, who produced and sold another 500 copies worldwide. another ep followed a year later. sadly, plans for a third ep on the label never materialized, but the pair remain close to this day. 24 years later we are honored to reintroduce this genre-defying, uniquely forward-thinking ep to today�s dance floors.

next up on francis harris exceptional imprint scissor & thread comes a collaboration with american producer, dj aakmael. aakmael has built a reputation for some of the deepest, rawest house music sounds coming out of the states, releasing well-received tracks on the likes of freerange records, release sustain, kolour dogmatik and ndatl. returning to scissor & thread, aakmael and label boss harris cook up an intoxicating vibe across this 5 track ep. each shares a track and work together on the fifth, while also remixing each others solo cuts. first up aakmaels deep muzik- a quintessential nod to its self-proclaimed mission statement. skittering drums, a shuffling groove, deep keys, and chords make up this essential opener. franks (aka francis harris) all that light mix shows another side, finding pockets of space and developing the fizzing percussion to produce an equally affecting piece of dancefloor bliss. sharing production duties from the outset on mercy of means, the guys slip into an easy mid-tempo groove with plenty of depth - the rhythm rolls along and offers the perfect basis for some sublime melodic touches. franks part song also hones in on the subtle deep grooves. bumping, slightly filtered and saturated drums provide the main body, with beautiful washes and keys finding their way through, aakmaels remix beefs up the groove somewhat, making the snares snap harder and kick hit a little stronger, but the essence of the tracks melodic atmosphere remains perfectly in place.

songs about the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from arabic sounds, american funk as well as neighboring ethiopia. kamal keila was among the first artist we met in sudan during our two trips to khartoum and omdurman last year. he is one of the key figures of the sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in sudan from the mid 1960s until the islamist revolution in the late 1980s. when we meet kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels. each tape included five tracks. one with english lyrics and another with arabic ones. musically you can hear the influence of neighboring ethiopia much more than on other sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to fela and american funk and soul. his lyrics, at least when he sings in english which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. a brave statement in the political climate of sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called shmasha. a note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of august 1992. both sessions stand as a hearable testament how kamal keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics. kamal keilas album is the first in a series of releases covering the sudanese jazz scene on habibi funk. be on the lookout for albums by the scorpions and sharhabeel coming soon.

with 2018 marking a quarter of a century for positiva being at the summit of the dance industry, the label have enlisted the work of both paul morrell, and latroit, to sprinkle modern magic on the timeless record. british producer and xxl resident dj paul morrell laces his own mix with euphoric, high-tempo chords and a floorfilling breakdown, a stark contrast to the deeper, gritty interpretation offered by 2018 grammy award winning american producer and composer, latroit, who added: - as the rush comes was obviously one of the stand-out tracks of the decade, and it was amazing to get my hands on that vocal. i ve also known dave dresden (one third of motorcycle) for years before this came out and it was great to reconnect and finally work with him creatively after all this time. the vinyl features 3 remixes of as the rush comes by latroit, paul morrell and dash berlin.

next up for rhythm sections club focused sub-label international black 004 is here and it is bringing the heat - this time from tennessee, usa. mister saturday night and cgi affiliate alex falk delivers a 4 track ep made with one thing in mind the dancefloor. taking influence from the likes chevel, levon, redshape and phase, alex falk achieves a singular vision merging american and european styles of techno. opening with upp, an effortless techno groove with a tight rolling bass line, classic lead stabs that pulsate, twist and turn as the heavy kick punishes the subs. beta comes in next with a serious low end bounce a distorted bass bump pushes the system to the max before being followed up by lower sub all swinging around a fat house kick and tight percussion another club stomper for the serious rigs only. the b side is a proper dub techno workout.

the american pop duo �made in france� has been making waves on the parisian stage with their retro style evocative of the great girl groups of the 60 s (the shirelles, the ronnettes, the shangri-las). this album follows the release of music video clips for the singles -beau brown- and -burn-. musicians and songwriters bathed in the pop music of the 50 s - 70 s from their native usa, johannah cantwell and laura woody take us through the ups and downs of their lives in paris with joyful melodies and self-deprecating humor. the album has undercurrents of surf rock and motown, with riffs from organ, harpsichord, sitar and timpani supporting their texts, which are decidedly of their time. produced and arranged by franck hedin and nathalie loriot (the shuffles, lafayette, howlin�jaws�), recorded by fred carrayol at mercredi 9 studio in paris, the album was both mixed by fred and etienne colin.

jaars other people is pleased to present a new solo record of guitar and live custom electronics artist patrick higgins, an american avant-garde composer and producer from new york city. higgins is known for his work in experimental and contemporary classical music, playing guitar and composing in the mythical avant-noise-jazz ensemble zs. his solo work as a composer unites european avant-garde forms with the post-minimalist howl of new york. his upcoming release on other people, dossier, is a four-movement piece performed live without overdubs or edits. all of the samples and synthetic patches were custom built and specifically engaged to become elements of live guitar manipulation. the sound world is post-apocalyptic in spirit but builds to an intimate and reflective end. the material was developed over a two-year period and finalized at the end of 2016. cover art is by alfredo jaar.

sphonica�s white label series returns with a real deep house excursion by chilean producer massiande in the form of his �freedom ep�. massiande is an artist of multicultural roots. he was born in santiago, chile, yet he has lived most of his life alongside us american people and has dutch family roots, which has greatly affected the way he perceives and lives music. growing as a big fan of us soul, jazz and disco, he found his way into music production through house and his biggest influences have been artists such as larry heard, ron trent and chris brann (aka wamdue project).

orient meets occident. collector edition of jaime zenamon�s debut album from 1984 available now! zenamon studied guitar and composition in israel, spain, portugal and in various south american countries. he a was student of abel carlevaro and worked as teacher at the berlin music university (hdk) from 1980 until 1992. the album was recorded at christopher franke�s (tangerine dream) studio and features udo hanten from the cult krautrock project you. similar sound compared to cluster, neu!, kraftwerk but with stronger esoteric world music influences. nandu muley playing the santoor, a 100 string music instrument which was already used by assyrian musicians for the production of their hits some thousand years ago :) originally released on polydor in 1984 the album get�s re-released for the first time by private records in 2015. remastered from the original master tapes at 24 bit. really rare recordings, especially the 12� is one of the most valuable and sought after german electronic records of the 1980�s.

since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album in 2013 on names you can trust, la mecánica popular has quietly been contemplating the evolution of the group s sound, philosophy, and overall approach to making music. band leader efraín rozas experimental nature has continually pushed the boundaries of his own definition of not only latin american music, but its broader relationship with music s global culture and history. the sound of -psychedelic salsa- that lmp helped capture in their debut was destined for further outside-the-box interpretations, and with the formation of a new quintet lineup over the last few years, lmp began to incorporate a more free, improvised and instrumental-focused performance of rozas increasingly radical compositions. the band subsequently took this liberated approach directly into the studio, recording roza cruz live, in its entirety. it was a cathartic experience, a necessary methodology for the new album s concept that embraced the intimate performance of its players and did away with standard techniques of isolation and overdubs. the evolution of the band s sound on roza cruz brings forth a blend of styles rarely heard together, a touch reminiscent of electric-era miles davis or eddie palmieri at his most experimental, as the driving force of timbales and congas provide a bed for a wave of lush, analog amplification that mirrors the dueling leads of fuzz guitar and electric piano. but as far out as those instruments take the listener, the raw rhythm the clave always keeps it tethered to the earth and the dance, a cerebral yet visceral gift for the mind and feet.

back in 90s san francisco scott, gavin and robbie hardkiss helped pioneer the american underground scene with their club nights, warehouse parties and groundbreaking record label. they forged a new direction for dance music with a string of vinyl releases by hawke, god within, little wing and rabbit in the moon, culminating in the seminal compilation delusions of grandeur released in 1995. delusions of grandeur made the billboard dance charts, went to no.1 on the rolling stone alternative album chart and launched the international dj/production careers of the hardkiss brothers. in 2018 to celebrate the 20th anniversary, the album was remastered and re-released with this new vinyl.

proper mixed bag this one soothing, grinding, banging, and disturbing! new york city by way of miami, alex suarez delivers his debut lp the eight track autogolpe for l.i.e.s. autogolpe, is a term for military coup initiated by a dictator to take control of an existing government and suarez uses this loose idea to create the sonic equivialent of the pain, strife, oppression, isolation, and joyous freedom associated with said act. musically he expands on his prior releases for bank and primitive languages as heavy industrialized sonic beatings sit next to somber passages, oil drum slow beat tribal clangers provide a back drop for screams shooting out of the dark. musically it paints a distorted picture of world in decline, an exile from another land and arrivial to anothers in chaos or the clinging hope of something better on the other side.

american producer dustin zahn readies the next release on rekids special projects this april with four vigorous cuts entitled take the throne. dustin zahn has been flying the techno flag for two decades, releasing on labels like rekids when not helming the berlin-based enemy records, a label which has released music from artists like fellow us techno stalwart ambivalent, arts boss emmanuel, and innervisions producer yotam avni. zahn is also respected for train wrecks, his weekly podcast series inviting members of the house and techno community to discuss a wide variety of music and industry related topics and stories. the release opens with the thumping kicks and sci-fi melodies of take the throne before rolling into the dubby tones, infectious claps and rattling white noise of decorum. the atmospheric nameless midnight then follows, packed with echoing synths, tantalising effects and a twisted vocal sample that weaves throughout, arriving at the final track subtle flex where escalating synths meet syncopated percussion.

berlins own steffen linck, a multi-instrumentalist known as monolink, announces his debut album amniotic, due april 20th via embassy of music subsidy embassy one. it is the experiential nature of monolink�s music that defies the muddy definition of modern live electronic music. armed with a singular blend of berlin underground culture with the pop-leaning sensibility of american electronica, steffen transports listeners into his own realm of sonic exploration. the music is pillared by emotive guitar tones, analog synth stabs and, for the first time, his own vocals acting as a singular point of departure for this budding talent. amniotic stands as monolinks first complete body of work, following his 2017 ep burning sun via sol selectas, and the end, a collaborative record with acid pauli in 2015.

san francisco in the late 1960. the hotbed of psychedelic and rock culture. the dead, joplin, jefferson airplane and a host of others all gaining mainstream acceptance for their acid tinged work. but the city and the surrounding bay area had so much more going for them. a liberal political outlook and a large african american and latino population, meant that musical and cultural reference points were wider and more easily assimilated there than (almost) anywhere else in the united states. two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were santana and sly and the family stone, with their melting pots of sound that took in jazz, soul, rock and latin influence. for a while they were two of the biggest acts in the united states and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. they were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole lp. one of the best to do just that were leon�s creation, whose debut lp �this is the beginning� acid jazz are reissuing here. a native of san francisco leon patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers the music is a perfect blend of acid soul, mixed with hippie sentiments that will get you dancing on the uptempo numbers such as the title track, �back roads� � with its glorious harmonies and the soaring �power�. more thoughtful numbers such as �until you were gone� or �love� will touch your soul. so impressed was carlos santana that he eventually asked leon to join his band.
