chupacabras and brother y join forces to form the debut vinyl release from tutamen. brooklyn resident and elusive production talent chupacabras offers up two machine-powered cosmic cuts, expanding upon the territory explored with his contributions to the tutamen tape series and last years ep for go finger. the as-yet unknown brother y makes a first appearance with two hypnotic numbers on the b-side.

altered moods recordings makes its first artist foray into asia, more specifically, it sets its sights on nagano, japan, where it finds a fertile and quickly expanding underground scene and one of its key players, yoshiki tsuchiya, also known as miruga. miruga has made a big splash in his relatively short arc as an underground artist. he came out strong in 2012 with human tube on anton zaps bellwether ethereal sound label after a full-length digital album on logos recordings two years prior.

ivy lab and alix perez have been astounding electronic music audiences for years throughout drum & bass and further afield with their own 20/20 and shades projects respectively. now in 2016 the two forces combine for a collaborative release like no other, drawing their own distinct styles to create the beautifully diverse, *arkestra* ep. the double 12 inch vinyl includes a download code.

chris carrier delivers a box of steaming fresh hot techno jams with the latest release from his trusty adult only sub-label, sound carrier. over the last five years he has dropped five eps on the label, with this marking sound carrier’s sixth outing. as usual, the sounds here are a little more entrenched in the techno sound ethic.

in the space of two short years shlømo has quickly established himself alongside the likes of marcelus, bambounou, francois x and the antinote records crew as a key figure in paris’ current techno generation. having established his own taapion records label in 2013 and built a roster around a core of local producers including roman poncet, pvnv and antigone, in addition to enlisting stephen brown, conforce and sterac as remixers for the label’s releases so far. for its fifth release, bright sounds - run by fellow parisian kennedy smith - revisits last year’s rechaïm ep (bsrx003), with a trio of remixers offering their own takes on shlømo’s established deep and expansive sound. first up is the aforementioned 50 weapons artist bambounou, who offers a dynamic groove-based version of the title track that bounces along an elastic kick drum with cut-up fragments of the original’s atmospheric pads providing further impetus. label owner kennedy smith takes on theory is the worst by bringing its dub textures to the for while filling the track’s empty spaces with intricate drum patterns. finally, italian techno pioneer donato dozzy turns grounded queen into a classic dozzy slow-burning techno trip, with his trademark layered sound complimenting the track’s subtle rhythmic backbone.

spanish dj & producer, eduardo de la calle, has continued to explore the outer limits of the electronic palette since his cadenza records debut back in 2013, clocking up stellar releases for the likes of mule musiq, hivern discs, be as one and nonplus over the last couple of years. eduardo returns to cadenza in february with the ‘anima animus’ single, coupling two tracks of refined techno for your listening pleasure. taking inspiration from the psychologist/philosopher carl jung’s concept of anima and animus (and do take the time to explore this), eduardo marries arpeggiated synths and melodic chords with a soft kick and tantalizing hats, producing a slick piece of reflective techno that’s alive with melody and groove. on ‘north pole’, we get more of the signature ‘de la calle’ sound, subaquatic bass and searing, melancholic strings play out over a steady mechanical beat, nodding its head not only to the detroit masters but also to the european new wave sounds that influenced the motor city artists in the first instance. another assured single release from eduardo that will further solidify his place in the current electronic music landscape.

rushmore is a 1998 soundtrack to the wes anderson film of the same name. the songs mostly blend raw, adolescent urges and insecurity with an awkward grace, composed primarily of popular music from the 1960s. continuing with its soundtrack initiative, ume will be reissuing this classic soundtrack back on vinyl for the first time in years.
the 1998 wes anderson film, rushmore, starred bill murray, jason schwartzman, olivia williams, seymour cassel, and luke wilson. the soundtrack was scored by mark mothersbaugh and also features music by the kinks, cat stevens, the who, john lennon, zoot sims, faces, and more.

almost exactly three years after nr&, a project uniting &me’s and rampa’s production with the voice of new york disco-house-siren nomi, dropped their debut ep, we finally can announce a new chapter in this ongoing transatlantic menage. this very “spoken for” ep is comprised of two new tracks, that again fuse songwriting with floor-demands and showcase the same crackling and pulse quickening passion that instantly has become nr&’s trademark. so here’s the evidence – a long distance relationship is not necessarily doomed to get boring after a while. “taste like” on a might be conceived as the club-affair of those two new joints. a tune indulging in self-control, extending the pre- eruptive moment of excitement to track length. there is nomi’s unmistakeable sexed up oration, flanked by an affirmative thunderstorm of claps, then a bass heavy bridge, overflowing into a noise brushed finale. altogether a tasty flavour carrier for an effective floor heating. “spoken for” is not only the title track, but also the hymn coming out of the flipside ambush. there is no kick necessary to underpin what nomi’s charismatic croon is laying down. therefore a wise choice to let the arrangement of interspersed field recordings, percussive details and piano- and synth-decoration exercise in unobtrusiveness. safe to say, this tune will refine many future peaktimes anyway.

the white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. but since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination, and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action.
certainly not in the case of junior boys, who’ve readied a new album, big black coat, via city slang. a strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what jeremy greenspan and matt didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release.

originally recorded by marc moulin, vincent kenis and marc hollander in 1977 brussels. leapfrogging over style and genre boundaries, the lp shuffles between improvised jazz, minimalism, imaginary ethnic music, classical and even proto-techno (saure gurke foreshadows characteristic detroit techno riffs by a good ten years). it became a cult album in its own right and a few decades later parisian dj / producer krikor spontaneously decided to rework two tracks for his dj-sets. ensemble brings his remixes with the kind permission of crammed, marc hollander / aksak maboul and krikor.
