london artist mal-one has recorded a 7” to celebrate all things punk... name checking many london record stores in this song, with a reggae/dub version on the b-side. the record cover is a collage of a 100 punk singles of all the classics from adam and the ants to x ray spex. his next london punk art exhibtion is in may on piccadilly and inside the shrink wrapped 45 is an invite to the show. mal-one has exhibited along side banksy and peter blake among others. this black vinyl 7” only release of 600 copies.

subb-an and adam shelton may be plenty busy with their own endeavours, but they still know how to bring it home to roost on their own one records. this time around they ve both turned to the same vocalist, isis salam, to deliver some insistent instruction atop their lean and mean productions. subb-an s -self control- is a cool and deadly workout that places the emphasis on the bass and places salam s classic speech at the front of the mix. shelton gets into a more jacking frame of mind on -only now-, whipping up a raw chicago flavour to devastating effect.

two key players of the scene join forces on figures sixteenth release. no one else than adam beyer and luke slater contribute tracks to this very special ep. mod by luke slaters planetary assault systems project takes off with a fast, breathless groove. its force drags the dancers along, and the mesmerizing bleeps put everybody in a deep trance. within seconds, the solid ground of the dancefloor is nothing but a remote memory. mod has a very special aura, it is hard to grasp its exceptional energy. it appears to be pretty elementary, and yet it is an verwhelming techno anthem which will accompany you for quite some time. adam beyers simulated usage surprises the crowd with its elegance and subtlety. forming an irresistible funk, the fabric of the track interweaves various tiny elements. this savageness obviously manifests in his musical approach which can be characterized by his open-mindedness in regard to diverse influences, currents and styles. simulated usage is strong and joyful, it is techno in its best sense. once again, adam beyer und luke slater manage to coin the face of contemporary club music.

since it’s inception in 1991 on the streets of glasgow, soma records has stood for uncompromising quality of the highest level in every area it operates. stuart mcmillan & orde meikle formed slam during the acid house explosion in the late 80’s and then together with friends glenn gibbons & dave clarke they forged one of electronic music’s most widely known and well respected labels. with mcmillan & meikle as the figureheads with their slam project and influenced by the early detroit techno scene, soma quickly began to develop it’s own sound and with their eyes firmly fixed on a vision of the future, the team began the quest to instill their unquenchable thirst for electronic music into the world around them. soma quickly became an international brand as slam’s anthemic “positive education” brought about an electronic renaissance that saw the group thrust into the limelight and green lit the furious rise of the label.

in many ways, it s difficult to believe wehbba only dropped his first full-length ep on drumcode this year. released in february, the four-tracker eclipse was a monster statement piece of the brazilians talents and followed on superbly from fake, his contribution to last year s a-sides vol.6 inarguably one of the biggest tracks on the compilation. with the confirmation that wehbba will take part in drumcode s off week party in barcelona, followed by the brand s takeover of resistance in ibiza, its indisputable proof that his crisp, chord-driven take on techno has become a vital component to the expansive palette of sound adam beyer has drawn for the label in 2018 and beyond. catarse marks the rapid-fire follow-up from the prolific producer. opening with the eerie she lost control, wehbba says he took inspiration from the joy division track of almost the same name (‘she s lost control ), but instead of crafting the dense sonic atmosphere with vocals, he employs an analogue kick drum and stealth-like moog bass with dramatic results. process follows, a cut which begun as a cover jam of laurent garnier s crispy bacon and ends up incorporating the cut-up vocals of legendary minimal composer steve reich, who is one of wehbba s chief inspirators. the resulting track is an ice-cool percussive work that s rich in dancefloor functionalism. the title track will be familiar to many who follow drumcode radio, a goose-bump inducing highlight of beyers dcr392 at awakenings in eindhoven, catarse is driven by a memorable melodic riff resplendent in 90s techno euphoria. the ep concludes with the terrific mind awake, a powerful concoction of reverb heavy basslines and glitchy effects, that s been thoroughly road tested by both beyer and wehbba and kicks like a rodeo bull.

drumcode continues its commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge techno. with releases this year already from adam beyer, pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika and julian jeweil, this july sees the return of enrico sangiuliano with astral projection. after his remix of mobys of why does my heart feel so bad back in november last year, enrico sought creative inspiration from his travels, transcending that into his productions and long studio sessions during the winter months. the result brings a mind and body melting release from the italian producer. the title track astral projection is a captivating, big room techno masterpiece. deep reverberations punch alongside a sinisterly crisp percussive drive. launching into a groove laden synth modulation of low end textures, it breaks down into an ethereal amalgamation of pads and synths before the vocal launches, taking this track to another level. ‘blooming era has destructive dancefloor intent. there is no holding back with the low end synth modulation which enrico has mastered to perfection. a tightly woven percussive flare moulds flawlessly with the rolling oscillations of the beast of this track. if you have seen label head honcho adam beyer playing anywhere on the globe in the last 5 months, this has been a peak time favourite. road-tested to the max, and with much success.

son of a beatnik - an absolutely monster record getting some well deserved reissue love! produced in chicago by the well loved and late dj chunk-a-bud aka adam malian (rip) all the way back in the mists of 1994 on rick lenoir s coveted house jam label this 12inch undoubtedly takes it s cue from the cities vast, rich and deep heritage of dj s and predecessors. this record proudly contains the spirit of the music box, the warehouse and all the other like-minded spaces that fuel it s disco thrusting beats, anyone with a passing interest will know the elements that make up son of a beatnik , they are classics in chicago and beyond! this is one of those records that just doesn t stop, it s still getting caned today by those lucky enough to own a copy. a true blue cult classic, real deal house music from the windy city. a truly rare 12inch that doesn t show up very often son of a beatnik is an essential release from a particularly fertile period in house music, chopped up, sampled, looped and programmed with love! a surefire winner, this record will cause infinite damage on any dance-floor. truly essential stuff here, this reissue has been realised with the full involvement of rick lenoir and is 100% legit! don t snooze, this one deserves a spot in any self respecting house heads record bag or dj set, classic material made available again for 2017!

the third release on ascorbites own corseque records is not for the faint-hearted. advance the flight and inadequate demeanor are clearly twins, delivered from the darkest corners of ascorbite’s mind. the bold, pounding quality of the ep brings adam x or grovskopa to mind but ascorbite has a dystopian touch that’s entirely his own. advance the flight is like a battle track for an intergalactic armada being attacked by an infinite horde of swarming space ants. inadequate demeanor, on the other hand, is a grim steampunk fantasy of a black, shining locomotive plainly out of control, raging on red hot rails towards the end of the line. however, while both tracks are rough and unforgiving, ascorbite manages to invigorate them by the use of subtle melancholic atmospheres – like rainy skies over a concrete desert. a balance between brutalism and vitality. a trademark of ascorbite and corseque records.
