rich la bonte is a musician, writer and editor from upstate new york born in 1946. at age 11 he figured out how to record a piano backwards with his first tape deck and discovered monk, mingus and art blakey. in 1965 rich moved to ithaca, bought an electric guitar and started singing in garage rock band the huns. after the band dissolved, he moved to nyc and played bass and sang in the original cast production of the musical godspell. in the late 70s la bonte moved to hollywood with shari famous, released a a few 7” singles as dada2, and started flatdisk records, a vinyl subsidiary of dave gibson s moxie record company.

a selection of forgotten demos by band hymn, active 1981-1984, with multi-talented musician and post-punk pioneer lucas trouble (†2016) in the lineup. dition of 400 numbered copies. hand stamped sleeve. includes insert with photos, artwork and liner notes. all the tracks were originally self-released as demo tapes in a very limited run. their first work, coming home, was published in 1983, and the second one, too many lies, in 1984. both of them were distributed by the band themselves. shortly after, they released a more widely known 12” ep, tired (nova express, 1984), with a different line-up and noticeably more rock-oriented. definers of a totally genuine sound, hymn were coevals to the underground-synth-post-punk movement that surfaced in france in the early eighties, easily recognisable today via cult labels such as bain total and invisible/scopa records, with stunning releases by experimental references like ilitch, philippe doray or incontinents.

cementing his reputation as the star toaster with the small but popular el paso sound system, based in the waltham park area, dennis alcapone was one of the first deejays to rise to prominence following u roy’s breakthrough in the late 1960s. born dennis smith in the rural district of culloden, he became immersed in sound system culture after settling in western kingston. once el paso became big on the sound system circuit, dental technician-turned-producer keith hudson brought him into the studio for his debut recordings, which led to a debut album for studio one and hit material for duke reid, some cut in concert with his deejay sparring partner, lizzy. alcapones longstanding links with bunny lee yielded the excellent guns don’t argue album, first issued in 1972, on which the toaster raps with style over some of lees all-time greatest rhythms, including delroy wilsons better must come, john holts left with a broken heart and slim smiths rendition of the temptations soul classic ain’t too proud to beg.

italian artist paul santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on soundcloud, but now with his venetian causeway label hes able to prove the clout to be found in his music. on this 10inch the arch title generic house traxx actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. please him on the b side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

melancholic ambient tracks and deconstructed breaks come one after the other and set the mood of the person who dives in. melodies play a very important role in these introspections: meticulously planned, sharp or languishing, they guide the listener through his wandering. in this record, zwei kreise shows his obsession for detail and micro-variations under a new light, more ethereal and contemplative, renewing our perceptions with every listening.

makeness, the brainchild of kyle molleson, returns with his white label . off the back of a minor science remix being played out by the likes of jamie xx, ben ufo, avalon emerson and more last summer, the ep marks the producer’s most dance oriented ep yet. the roots of temple works date back to the producer’s time in leeds, which played an important part in both this release and his wider love for dance music. while there, molleson recorded a friend s percussion project, g-bop orchestra, at an old textile mill in holbeck, known as temple works. the vast openness of the space made for the best natural reverb and is weaved throughout the title track. it was also in leeds where the producer discovered cosmic slop, an all welcoming party with a sound system built by founder and resident dj, tom smith, with donations going towards raising money for local charity map (music and arts production). slop’s intimate and flawless sounding room played a huge part in cementing makeness’ love for club spaces.

since the millennium 2raumwohnung unites electronic sounds and pop melodies in a variety of ways. the early singles wir trafen uns in einem garten (2000) or 2 von millionen sternen (2001) playfully communicated the life-style of a new berlin. the duo, consisting of inga humpe and tommi eckart, started as a studio project and continued to develop via eight album productions. at the same time, an important impulse included developments in techno or house music. their most successful album 36 grad stayed in the german album-charts for 33 weeks, 2raumwohnung continued to expand their stage range as well.

returning with four tracks from four upcoming artists, lkr003 explores a variety of styles on the fringes of modern techno, with elements of industrial, noise, atmospheric ambience and clattering breakbeats forming an uncompromising whole.
on the a-side, strahinja arbutina’s brutal four-to-the-floor techno screamer ‘dehumidifier’ rattles the roof, leading into iazikzazubami’s slower, mysteriously murky ‘brmaa’, where visions of dark landscapes are conjured. on the b-side, consulate drags you further deep into the nightclub dungeon with his techno + breaks laden stomper ‘klattenburg’, while the ep is drawn to a determined close with hymns’ ‘map 7’, which gathers the eerie, robotic vibes of the previous cuts, and projects them into an energetic, mechanical climax.

spiros kaloumenos has been one of the key artists of planet rhythm at an earlier stage. this time he’s back with a completely recrafted style that perfectly fits the label’s current state of mind. adventurous techno with thumping beats and at times a little acidic touch. the greek artist comes up with a killer four track ep that goes from the sturdy beats of introvert shadow, through the acid tainted 101 reasons to the rave inspired anthem called de forme. we’re happy to welcome spiros back to planet rhythm.

isolation diaries is argentinian producer alejandro mosso s 2nd album. it comes more than ten years after his debut, hiperborea in 2005. he says i think the album is warm, emotive and nostalgic but not dark nor sad. it is percussive and melodic but not laid back and balearic. it is tribal and organic but still very precise, as only electronic music can be. the grooves are strong and infectious and the sounds are rich and satisfying, resulting in music that sounds very organic and unpremeditated. the album is accompanied by a burnt freidman remix of the track isolation diaries, and a ricardo villalobos remix of deardrum.
