love not sex is the second stubb 12inch from paper recordings ben davis. the original is a melancholic slice of sunshine that draws inspiration from mor and blue-eyed soul with a hefty dose of balearica. acoustic guitars, rhodes, live drums and strings plus crazy ps tim davis on bass provide the perfect cinematic backdrop for the plaintive vocals of huw costin (torn sail) and rachel foster. japanese edit hero mori ra delivers his first ever remix and its a doozy. keeping the bones of the original track, he takes it in to dark psychedelic waters with the help of former_airline s tripped out guitar. a spoken vocal tips it in to full balearic wonkiness that will have the likes of dj harvey and bjorn torske getting hot under their disco beards. bergen s leca employs his trademark stripped back crisp production for a warm, dreamy remix. steel guitar, clicks, whirrs and a nordic playfulness make for a cosmic journey in to the northern lights. the 12inch will be a limited run of 300, screen printed in west yorkshire by the egg factory with artwork by artist rachel johns in a project that celebrates community and collectivism.

approaching complexity is tangent’s sophomore album release for n5md, a label that has seen accomplished releases from the likes of near the parenthesis, bvdub, and loess among others. throughout its nine offerings, the record features a gorgeous contemplative piano that hangs in the air amidst static clicks and dense atmospheres. its delicate touch feels both melancholic and stirring, as exemplified on tracks “equilibrium i (ii & ii)” and “awaken.” the latter cut is a fascinating work comprised of nearly inaudible whisper-song vocals and swelling ambience, its waves a thick froth of a toppled surf underneath tickled ivory. like the rise and fall of a heavy chest, this sound leads to the track’s conclusion, an elongated departure of breath.
a similar ending can be heard on the track “redundancy” which is complemented by the official video premiering at igloo magazine. jittering frames of concrete grass animations are edited to the rhythmic snippy percussion. this is juxtaposed by images of ice cascading off a rocket launch in slow motion and vapor in reverse. see below.
at almost an hour in length tangent’s new album is their most complete sonically, never straying from its core essence. a quality release that in its nature is both bound to existence and is otherworldly in its simplistic beauty.

ismo laakso s very well produced and spaceously mixed ofelia (from 1996-99) is a blend of industrial, avant garde, modern classic, bleeps and clicks. the narrative of this album sometimes undefinably blurs the lines between recorded material & samples, and also juxtapose the main grooves with highly psychedelic sound effects and (beautiful) melodies.

crazy 12 track library music style album on this ace italian label. all based around bumping live rhythms triggering an obscure japanese drum synth module recorded in 2018. it was november 2017 when i received a call from an old friend, hi fabrizio, i found a rare japanese drum machine, you should come and see it before i put this on ebay. i went to check it out and immediately realized it had more potential than just drum sounds generation, it was able to produce quirky and creepy sounds if triggered by any sound source. so i bought it and brought in the studio, where me and alex were laying down new beats and ideas. it took just three days of jams to get the skeleton of this record done: i programmed the module to receive alex s drum hits and the device started creating synth lines, almost as it was speaking its own language.i ve found a soul in this machine, and i wanted to bring it to life in these tracks, a mix of arranged compositions and improvised jams. no root keys, no grids, no clicks, everything came out in an instinctive and natural way as far as we know it s the first time this synthesizer/drum machine is been used in this improper and new way.

trux’ second ep on berlin based record label office is a bow to the many outstanding moments in the history of ambient music. allusions to brian eno are just as recognisable as to the charming concepts of pop ambient or clicks & cuts. it’s between these poles that the four tracks on the a-side oscillate and manage to capture the listener with vibrant and diverse soundscapes. the flip side sees trux drop a stunning melodic breakbeat tune besides remixes by workshops premier techno chef lowtec as well as a freestyle electronica version by o$vmv$m. the much loved super quiet tops the record artwork off with another remarkable example of his casual and airy black and white photography.

solar phenomena are keeping up a busy and high quality release rate in 2018 with a fifth offering already. this one is a three tracker from stl, who already released his “if time would move backwards” ep on the label earlier in the year. the title track opens the account with blown out drums trudging along in ever changing patterns. swirling, lo-fi ambience adds scale to the track and encourages you to get lost in the middle of it all. “weed detective” is ten minutes of psyched-out and stripped back drum work at an inviting mid tempo. keys dance and heavily treated vocal sounds trip you out in slow motion. last of all, “scubbu babe” has finger clicks, bright and mild crazed keys and ad libbed vocal sounds all doing gymnastics round more of those trademark drums. once again, stl proves he operates in a world of his own.

losouls another picture label follows on from eps in 2017 by honesty and the label boss himself with a new two tracker by japanese artist sasaki hiroaki. the yotsume label owner is based in tokyo and his sleek sounds take cues from 80s new wave and look for a soulful vibe in electronic music. 2018 has already seen him release on open recordings and now he offers up some warm house rollers for another picture. ‘eo1 is eight minutes of rubbery drums and loose, scattered percussion, tumbling toms and clicks. dreamy chords light up the background and the whole thing drives ever deeper into the night, always evolving as it goes. on the flip, ‘plain song is just as heartfelt, but icy hi hats and metal stabs are more upright, getting you on your toes and keeping you there for another eight minutes of organic, authentic deep house bliss.

real name takeshi fukushima, takecha has been a key figure within japan’s electronic music scene for decades and belongs to the same pioneering crew as soichi terada and shinichiro yokota. now in his mid- fifties, ‘deep soundscapes’ is an album encompassing fukushima’s sound with every track written by the producer between 1990 and 2013. intricate percussion and crystalline chords set the tone in ‘deep drive’ before a funky bassline joins serene synths in ‘midnight things’. appearing in soichi terada’s mix for resident advisor (under its promo title ‘deep loop c’), ‘gradual atmosphere’ is comprised of a galloping beat and saccharine chimes, ‘factory 141’ sees takecha demonstrate a murkier aesthetic, whilst ‘rhodes detox’ is a definitive example of takecha’s flair for expertly balancing elements within his productions. an homage to shufflepuck cafe&#769,,, an old mac plus video game takecha would play on a black and white 9- inch monitor back in the day, ‘shufflepuck’ blends ghostly melodies with clicks, whirrs and pops. ‘calm imagination’ is a poignant affair from start to finish with its hypnotising atmosphere, contrasting to the more up-tempo ‘warm rondo’ with its soulful keys and purring low-end. tying it all together, ‘genuine innocence’ is a cut that takecha made two versions of, one with a solo from a pianist and another with more emphasis on the beat, the latter of which appears on this album.-

ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco) return to not an animal to further indulge in the organic house territories previously mined for the previous releases. the duo have an uncanny nack for deftly balancing the rockier end of disco with the authenticity of early house, and never more so than on -secret place. the original bounces and struts in a pleasingly groove laden hypnotic fashion, while the dub version turns down the guitars and turns up the synthesisers for a more heads-down dance floor excursion. on remix detail kuniyuki takahashi makes his 1st appearance on the label. on the vinyl you ll find an interpretation which can be best be described as pitched-down balearic-techno, which clicks, clacks and folds upon itself, drowning in waves of reverbed drama-drums at a deceptively low tempo. kuniyuki also provides a second remix as a digital exclusive, mildly pulling back on the pomp of the vinyl version, but replacing it with a spacious pathos, complete with backwards guitars that reminiscent of an electronic within without you era beatles. angaphora make their naar debut with their own wildly stirring remix of the lead track, which evokes the golden era of 80s melodic pop music to bewildering success, laden with digitised emotion, singing ebow guitar, and not a kick drum in site.

uun returns to his imprint ego death with an ep that showcases his progression in both sound design and atmosphere. the a side kicks things off with on the concept of irony, a broken beat assault which serves as a mission statement with its scattered snares and vocal samples. the tangled web continues this mood but with a more intense structure, heavy on hypnotic synths that weave in and out of the tracks percussive framework. where as the a side is the logical extension of the first three ego death releases, the b side serves to showcase a deeper atmosphere while maintaining uuns preference for dense arrangements. the other features a haunting ethereal pad that floats above a broken kick pattern and a bed of clicks, pops, and field recordings. the closing track, absurd existence, forges all the elements of the artist s sound into perhaps his most melodic work to date. it is therefore senseless to think of complaining since nothing foreign has decided what we feel, what we live, or what we are. jean-paul sartre

as ever, the next project on opilec music is one with a rich back story this time paying homage to a very specific disco scene of the early 80s: it finds label boss i-robots turning out one of his brilliant reconstructions, namely of a classic and cult track by one hit wonders ahzz. this track was first released on land of hits, a label run by peter brown (who also wrote -material girl- for madonna) and michael campbell and has now been officially licensed for this reissue by opilec music. the track, new york s movin was huge on the new york disco scene and was played by the likes of david mancuso at the loft, larry levan at the paradise garage and by nicky siano at studio 54, but continued to be a big hit with modern new york tastemakers kenny dope, dj spinna, danny krivit and his body & soul party crew well into the 90s, as well as with stars like motor city drum ensemble and bulljun. i-robots is a notorious producer and record collector with a vast understanding of the history of house and disco and his version combines an original vocal and instrumental version into something really magical. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take i) is a jangling, organic and lose limbed disco number with a funky drum line, soul in its bones and plenty of lovably rough percussion, clicks and drums. a retro and impassioned vocal line adds flair to the track at the midpoint just before that groove kicks once more. this version is featured on the new i-robots - reconstructions 2007-2017 10th year anniversary release. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take ii) is then just as emotive and outgoing but after the break has more of a focus on funk. this is a huge party starting track filled with feel good vibes and once again proves opilec music work on only the most special projects.

rhythm plate vet matt hunt is back with his goshawk alias and the snappily titled double house & triple garage ep, kicking off with the warm and steady grooving deep house of -down in brooklyn-. -both sides buttered- is a cheekier affair that flirts with splashes of sassy organ chords and finger clicks to die for, but things get serious once more with the soul-drenched -88 keys-, which features an undisclosed number of melodic piano and rhodes parts twirling in bluesy harmony. -i live for the love you give- finishes the ep off with a sharp jack in its step and a heartfelt vocal lift to drill some raw emotion into your no-nonsense heads-down house session.

romanian artist dragutesku’s “convalescent” steadily builds from clicks and crackles to full speed rumble, squelchy bass paired with spacey pads and crisp percussion. cali native rithma responds with “watsonville”, thrusting the ripped-cone kick to the front before the softer side slides beneath the rhythm for an all-night drive. russian producer saktu starts the flipside with “veidi”, a neon-soaked breakbeat floater pulling the low end out for the midsection’s chirrupy synth-chat before turning on the jets. from berlin via budapest comes giash’s “new things”, a frictionless ride on a hypersonic rail across a bubbling, tonal landscape.

the squirrels are back. their second platter comes courtesy of kit n c.l.a.w.s. (say it out loud), the cheekily-named collaborative project from squirrels on film co-founder brian hock and veteran san francisco producer kit clayton, and just like the label s first record, it s a woozy, wobbly trip designed for dancefloors drifting between dimensions. savvy techno heads will recognize kit clayton s name from his decades of experience at the avant-garde of electronic music. in the late 90s, he and partners tang tran and juan mendez (now better known as silent servant) launched cytrax, a groundbreaking minimal techno label that paved the way for the clicks n cuts sound of the early aughts. his debut album — nek sanalet, first released in 1999 on stefan betke s seminal label ~scape and reissued in 2015 — remains one of dub techno s most enduring documents. meanwhile, brian hock moonlights as the drummer for deranged bay area post-punk outfit bronze while recording murky electro-techno excursions as c.l.a.w.s.

renowned argentinean artist franco cinelli returns to unlock recordings with three intricate cuts from the vault this september. one of argentina s most respected producers, franco cinelli has been making music for over two decades. the rosario-born artist has made a name for himself with excellent releases on the likes of djulz bass culture, esperanza and raum...music, not to mention his collaborative project alongside dario zenker named maria fresca on ilian tape. with so many of the upper echelons of house, techno and minimal supporting his tracks, including ricardo villalobos himself, franco cinelli s inimitable productions are not to be overlooked. originally released in 2009 and now finally getting a proper vinyl release, cinelli s remix of saccobros why not constructs an energetic narrative that extends over ten minutes. tight kicks work alongside looped atmospherics as a muffled hook and infectious sample add to the heightening suspense. cuts from the vault also sees two new productions from the argentinian. morph sense is the more twisted of the two, demonstrating a medley of clicks and whirrs whilst sci-fi inspired arpeggios operate throughout. as the name suggests, dub sine of the moon is the deepest cut on the package, with its crunchy percussion and subterranean tape delays that form a hypnotizing aesthetic from start to finish.

fedbymachines has been active for almost a decade now, lurking in the undercurrents of netlabels and digital releases. now shipwrec shine the vinyl light of this shapeshifting musician, an artist who has ably turned his hand to a dizzying spread of styles. this skill is amply shown on his first wax release, relapse ep, where a glut of genres are fed into the machine. ambient. electronica. techno. electro. all are combined to create a textured sound, one of delicate strings, ghostly clicks and static. ochre closes the quintet with a remix, one that amplifies the organic nature of this absorbing encounter.

it seemed like neo ouija, a norfolk based idm imprint, had closed up shop. four years of silence suggested that founder lee norris, aka metamatics, had decided to call it a day. but looks can be deceiving. 2016 saw the boss release a cd album of fluid acid, squelching electro and heartfelt electronics. shipwrec are now bringing four choice cuts from bodypop to the vinyl faithful. proudly sitting on the difficult to define shelf, norris seamlessly shifts from frigid winter moods to warming autumnal sunshine. old-school sounds are rewired, softened by delicate keys and steady beats. machine music morphs into organic matter. acid coils, echoed bleeps and clicks grow and blossom into vivid audio vistas with metamatics, once again, proving his musical mastery

37 kicks off with tó, circular, the percussion resonating in a room, the stabs leading, and the bass pumping. 12 is next, all harmony, promising pastoral harmony, synth clock and mouth moisture clicks. paradela bursts in on the flip side, monumental, synthetic symphony, acidic and bright. jordão is last, rhythmic stutter, the rhythm cuts through, accompanied by a monotone pulse, some lost keys make their way into the mix, it tries to stabilize so it can calmly take you by the hand and lead you home, into the river.

manchester native alex coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12”s for the likes of black acre, livity sound and bloc. with gamma ray burst, the next in his series of releases on london low-end specialists tempa, coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. with the record’s title track, coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track’s most intense moments. ‘ground zero’ revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin ‘alpha decay’ are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. showing his diverse abilities, ‘phase two’ is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged ‘ascent’. closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of ‘distant resonance’, alex coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.

after a split release with chambray on ben sims’ hardgroove in 2016 greek-producer george tounisidis is set to drop a new 12” for symbolism in november entitled ‘solidarity’. with his first two cuts for the british dj’s imprint picking up support from the likes of dvs1, jackmaster and anthony parasole it’s unsurprising sims has tapped him for a full release on symbolism. since signing, tracks from ‘solidarity’ have also featured in both ben sims’ boiler room and run it red radio shows, resulting in a barrage of requests for release details which tees up the ep nicely. musically, ‘solidarity’ moves between scattered sequences and stabs (‘three clicks left’ & ‘solidarity’), muted hypnotics (‘nekyia’) and fractured acid (‘workers’) while all retaining the distinct sense of movement and dynamism that typifies symbolism releases.

while pheek may have been in operation for as long as anyone can remember within minimal house and techno, cleymoore has been most productive more recently thanks to his pluie/noir label. following on from last years seikou single on xquisite, here cleymoore and pheek link up to deliver some densely packed, production rich jams that keep the spirit of mid-00s clicks and cuts alive. the beats themselves may be slender slices that carry the energy of the tracks, but it s all in the infinitesimal details in between that the true magic of this music comes alive.

zefzeed was chosen to be the first artist to release at arria, certifying his multi-dimensional artistic vision. porto deporta takes over side a with a deep bass motif propelling forward – everything clicks into place, making this piece a high definition 3d madness. soy sausage continues the journey with a stylish swagger and an irresistible groove, dotted with a chamber of indecipherable voice delays, while bright synths float across the driving beat. side b is spinning koo, a track that combines functionality with musical playfulness, tumbling percussion and clouds of textures, while drawing on the kinetic energy. though his tunes are aimed squarely at clubs, they’re detailed, spacious and hypnotic too, a rare blend that make arria-001 a slick dancefloor machine.

the second release on tb arthurs (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with magda as blotter trax. the pair first encountered each other at the famous motor city record store record time, when detroit artist bmg introduced his then co-workers magda and derek plaslaiko to arthur, who was visiting the shop from chicago. sometime after that meeting, magda and arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4 tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1a is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2a then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. last of all, 2b snakes and slithers its way through undulating drums, cosmic freakiness and gloopy synth sounds that are all seductive and subversive in equal measure. this, then, is a truly fascinating pairing.

spanish musician alex font delivers the third release from his acme imprint this may with two groove led cuts set for a limited release of 200 copies on vinyl. since his first release in 2008, alex font has been etching his name into the worlds of house and minimal, building up an impressive back catalogue of releases on labels including oblack and nite grooves. his imprint acme s debut release 001 garnered support from dyed soundorom, ricardo villalobos, seth troxler, san proper and sascha dive amongst many, and font returns to deliver the third instalment in the labels catalogue. la buena onda kicks off the release with a series of punchy kicks, organic percussion licks and general funkiness before easing into a classic house groove reinforced by its compelling lead line and charming vocals. second offering sincopa y contratiempo switches things up with a minimal arrangement of shuffling hats, glitchy pops and clicks, a distinctly off-kilter swing and delicate nuances throughout its near 12 minute journey.
