like all great music, it s difficult to pinpoint what this sounds like exactly - but toronto s block univers have cited their influences to include -boogie, house music, cold wave synths, gospel vocals, 808s and moog basslines- - so that would go some way to explaining the magic here. we tried to jam in as many of our favourites on this release as possible. more bang for your buck!

instincts just a feeling is the pure embodiment of an early 90s detroit techno record. originally released in 1992 on instincts decisive record , not many copies managed to get outside of the city of detroit. within the melodic strings, 808s, and loosely swung samples - you can feel the spirit of these early days and of this young producer finding his sound. meticulously remastered by josh bonati from the master tapes for this 2018 issue.

known for releases on labels like overall music, innercircle and frole records, back to basics regular barnsley begins 2018 by returning to his vessel records imprint with big move ep . consisting of two low-slung originals, the release also includes remixes from bass culture founder d julz and cabinet records bosses cabdrivers. a compelling groove lays the foundation of time whilst quivering synths operate throughout, leading into d julz s remix that twists the original into a moody roller with tightly executed 808s at its core. forgiveness starts with clanking percussion as melodies add to the heightening atmosphere, while the cabdrivers remix takes the key elements of the original and plays with the harmonies to make them coarser.

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.

at this point you should know that am/tm is anthony mansfield and tal m. klein. this is their eighth record together. you should probably also know that anthony mansfield has another side project with nick chacona called ncam. in other words, anthony is a collaboratively promiscuous producer who likes to make music with his friends. back to acid is am/tm?s attempt to get the world from uptight and twitching to firmly crooked and messy. coveting a return to the halcyon days of tripped out people melting on the dancefloor and raves in the woods, comes this hard hitting trip with vocals by navid izadi. add sweeping 303s and crunchy 808s.. and well, what more could you ask for in a track called back to acid? on the b-side is an extended ncam remix which ups the bpms and attitude. its a family affair.

for another record store day release, british singer-songwriter victoria christina hesketh (little boots) teamed up with historic chicago house label trax to release the 12 inch for >every night i say a prayer<. she wrote this one with hercules & love affairs andy butler and it is better than anything on his groups sophomore dud blue songs. (it is also better than pretty much everything on little boots own spotty debut, 2009s hands.) the housey original version of >every night< incorporates a sort of cleaned-up old-school chicago aesthetic (dig the claps), but tensnakes posh freestyle rerub is the vinyls real winner. you can never go wrong with clinking 808s and pretty female vocals. fact.

hot release alert by our boy paul du lac who is a long time close friend of the frustrated family, colleague at the clone office and an old dj buddy of frustrated funk label boss klen (when they played the nighttown basement in the early 90s). so it s a bit of a special thing for us having him aboard. this ep shows pauls signature minimalistic approach on chicago style house. typical jacking 707s and 808s combined with minimal synth pulses. qom and access are pure jackin bliss for the floor while moodswings goes deeper with layers of warm pads and spaced out stings. the title track comes with a stripped beats version from tevo howard, for those who like to mix things up.. highly recommended!!

welcome to the first love sick recordings release brought to you by the likes of riskotheque, marchmellow and screen age & mudie (aka southbound hangers). a side >all alone< provides an exhilarating journey through heartbreak, loss and isolation. in the intro, delayed piano chords hint at distant happy memories but soon make way for stark 808s and womb-like sub frequencies that bring the listener back to bitter reality. insistent vocal snippets serve only to galvanize the tracks emotional content. truly a song to cry to as much as dance. in contrast to this is aa >you dont understand<. positivity and hope pervade this little beauty, its glistening synth hooks and intricate drum programming conjuring thoughts of joy and new found affection. perhaps the perfect sound-track to a summer romance.

south of croydon raised christian sibthorpe (aka a1 bassline) sent over a few things over the last 12 months that really had me paying attention. but it was jessica (j. phlip) ended up being the first one to drop falsehood at the spring dirtybird party in sf which pretty much sealed the deal. it just smashed the room to bits. later on i met christian in person when he helped me do a live radio show at rinse fm in london along with ben westbeech and we agreed there that dirtybird would put these two tracks out.a1 claims to have been heavily influenced by early metalheadz and you can really here it on these tunes. while buoyancy is a smooth pulsing affair that really shines in the deeper mixes, falsehood (which we are re-releasing from a1s tighten up label) really buries the hatched in your brain with bits and pieces of 808s, breaks and house hi-hats all forged together like hot iron.

the proposition is a simple one. it was a 2009 when julio bashmore first remixed >heartbreaker< from deadboys classic first release - the >u cheated< ep on well rounded.
he remoulded the garage template of the original into something more immediate, replacing the swung off-beats of the original with driving forward-rhythms and a clarity of purpose that takes absolutely nothing away from the musical impact of the original. this circulated on mp3 and we smiled and danced.
unexpectedly, in 2010 jb returned to >heartbreaker< for a different interpretation. this time around a more haunting approach was the order of the day with cross-fading strings creating a soulful, otherworldly atmosphere. the drop this time also swapped sub bass for punchy 808s. a tantalising further alternative that pointed the way to this vinyl release.
