as we move into a new year, again start the cogs of labels and artists around the world, this is certainly the case for disc over music as they bring us their first release of 2015. high off the back of exquisite releases in 2014 from luca lozano & mr. ho and nicson, disc over’s first installment of 2015 comes from label head tim green - a three track ep bursting with two classic tg productions and grooves which is then given another dimension with a remix from the talented german born producer borrowed identity. the ep kicks off with the aptly named ‘scar’ - a track which when heard, truly makes it mark. it sets the tone for the rest of the ep with it’s prominent bassline and haunting howls whilst dreamlike keys bounce and float above. track two, ‘we thought’ is taken down a gear but keeps all of the groove built from ‘scar’. it begins with a simple trademark tg bassline and is allied with light and free singular keys. the listener is then joined by vocals which along with the previous elements take you on a real trip. borrowed identity speeds things up right away with his remix of ‘we thought’. the track is morphed into a dancefloor groove with the comforting vocals darkened, cut and reworked on top of an unpredictable and fluctuating bassline. managing to keep the identity of tim’s original the track becomes something completely different and certainly makes you feel you want to take the trip

2016 repress , this is right up the alley of those who digged theo parrishs dance of the drunken drums: a hipnotic piano chord pattern sets the tone, while jerry the cat provides smoking live percussion and a walkin jazz bass bops effortlessly. the flipside dives even deeper into jazz territory with a jazz trumpet improvising over quirky percussion sounds.

nebraska is someone who’s tracks we’ve been loving for a good few years now and finally managed to pin him down for a release here on delusions of grandeur. the uk producer is something of an enigma, and despite some amazing releases on rush hour still remains resolutely underground and seems to keep his releases to a minimum, focusing on keeping the quality high rather than flooding the market with average material. once again, he brings the real deal with three drum-heavy warehouse jams to nice-up the dancefloor. aw-right (mute version) sets the tone with a raw house groove that keeps things stripped to the bare minimum. a bouncing bassline and rattling percussion break help to define the track but it’s the dusty, dubby approach to the mix which really makes the track shine. next up we have warp and weft, a similar sounding track but by dropping the bpm’s nebraska has created a sublime low-slung, bumpy groove to really move to. flipping over we’re treated to the brilliant eighty eights which will have you nodding your head like the churchill’s dog before you can say ‘looped up piano and bass one bar groove repeated for over eight and a half minutes shouldn’t work should it?’

parrish smith s debut of dystopic forbidding sets the tone of this label s impressive first release with a superb stark, acid ridden slab of body music. helena hauff adds to the proceedings with her remix of pankows >das vodkalied< taking no prisoners and using heavy percussion in contrast to a wonderfully tense set of arpeggiations, which all descend into skull crushing pressure. carrying over to the flip side are pankow, pioneers of the italian industrial/ebm scene, with two tracks from their legendary first tape -throw out rite- from 1983. with das vodkalied disembodied vocals are cut up and come from every direction driven by a raw, off-kilter energy and pounding beat. i m food for you cranks up the drive and anxiety to create a killer track based around stark arpeggiation. last of all, perseus traxx provides an acidic stripped down venting of frustrations which he spits out with vehemence.

lady blacktronika aka “the first lady of beatdown” brings three solid productions with all in vain ep, the next instalment on bass culture records. discovered on myspace by mike huckaby back in 2007, lady blacktronika’s sound brings a gritty edge from her street days, while simultaneously oozing a unique female sensitivity. making an impressive transition from the days when the dj boys wouldn’t let her play with their toys, she runs multiple labels, sound black recordings, sound kemystry and is co-creator of cocaine records, as well as releasing on deep explorer, skylax, underground quality and now bass culture. jumping straight in with learn me baby, the a side sets the tone with a deep and pounding, powerful groove. the title track takes it up a notch, the most incessant of the package, built for that peak-time dance floor fury. while the techno undertones remain, lord knows is a beautiful swirling house number that infuses the ears and body. the common denominator in all cases is the resonating voice of lady blacktronika herself, adding the human touch… a touch of soul.

known for his past releases on nation, l.i.e.s, and cititrax, chicagos beau wanzer delivers a 12 track lp of archival material culled from tapes stored away from years past, the tracks in question being plucked between 2002-2008. wanzer has stuck to his grotesque guns over the years, keeping his music personal, grating, and down right bizarre. each track takes a narrative of its own, from the languidly vocaled, yet uncannily catchy *mob boss* to the possessed murmurs of *love tone*, wanzer has created a completely unique collection of music which engages the listener all the way through.

the original, with a well-constructed bassline incorporates a warm up melody that begins to set the tone for the night ahead. each layer is distinct as the track begins to build itself right to its crescendo when each of those individual layers collectively come together. you can distinctly hear the 80 s like synths that are cleverly inserted into the track which are highlighted by the female vocal samples. the grittier elements add a touch of darkness and instantly transport you to a warehouse club with an intimate atmosphere. the remix, done by the widely loved tech-house duo pleasurekraft jack up the tempo a notch, and add a bouncy groove to the track. where the original brought out a darker side, the remix is more upbeat and settles in well for a peak hour set. bringing that crisp bassline to the fore, and tuning out the melodies to make them a tad subtler it showcases a more tech-house version of the original. there s an added element a slightly more haunted vibe which is coupled together with those gritty and harder elements. all i can conclude is what a tech-house bomb this is from the highly talented pleasurekraft. they always manage to bring something new and unique to every single track they ve ever remixed which truly shows their remarkability as consistently good producers.
