having previously turned out some refined club tracks for friendly neighbourhood label banoffee pies, christian jay comes to idle hands for his debut solo 12inch. as revealed in our past support of artists such as i.a. bericochea and matt karmil, an appreciation of the finer end of the minimal house and techno spectrum weighs heavy at idle hands hq, and christian embodies everything good about the micro-genre. the stylistic approach on this single is consistent across both tracks, fusing shuffling, 2-step fuelled drum patterns with blissful atmospheric content in a most natural of ways. on 117 this manifests in a more flamboyant end result peppered with playful hi-hat tones and delicate melodic licks, while on contrail the mood is resolutely low-end focused with some choice bass touches in amongst the tightly wound funk of the beat. what makes jay s efforts stand out is their immersive finish, using dexterous doses of dub processing to create a quintessentially bristolian mood while retaining the razor-sharp edges of upfront european minimal. its a tone that speaks to limbering up at the start of the party, or shaking down deep into the morning. that said, we could listen to this all day and night.

with half a century of existence, beninese band poly-rythmo can easily be considerate as legends of the african music alongside sela kuti and tinariwen. drawing their name from the extensive mix of influences that forged their sound (american soul and funk, nigerian afrobeat, french chanson, congolese rumba, etc.), they are known to be impressively productive as they released from 1969 to 1980 hundreds of eps and dozens of albums. in 2014, orchestra conductor florent mazzoleni visited the band and decided to produce this new album recorded in the legendary african studio satel. with its warm tone and mastery of rhythm variations, madjafalao will instantaneously become a classic of afrobeat and poly-rythmo will share their warm joie de vivre with thousands of people during their european tour starting in late october.

niro perrone better known as simply niro, or easy to remember, alongside sibling and production partner elia perrone, has come a long way over the past few years stacking up releases on the likes of m50’s revered kimochi sound, sound of vast, memento and the dub, as well as releasing his debut lp on his unclear imprint. here though we see niro introduce a new chapter with his brand new label pads.
‘hands of shadow’ opens the release and sets the tone of the label from the very beginning with an understated melodic feel fused with raw percussion and a subtly evolving yet intricate structure. ‘inner space’ follows and wanders into dub territories with spiralling echoes, low-slung drums and ethereal atmospherics. title cut ‘pieces of you’ opens the flip side and lays focus on an infectious unfaltering groove via vacillating pad swells, sporadic jazz licks and a weighty 4/4 drive before closing cut ‘the spectrometer dance’ rounds it all off with some ambient vibes.

opening cut acido setting the tone perfectly via murky broken rhythms and glitched out bass hits before the latter stages introduce a squelching 303 lead which tails out the rest of the record.what follows and takes a more robust approach rhythmically with a weighty kick drum, shuffling congas and choppy hats lying at the forefront while spiralling bass hits and vocal chops meander around them. opening the flip is nasty(or nylo if there is no way to fix name) which draws on an earth shattering sub bass lead, sparse percussive shots and a subtly bubbling synth stabs.lastly the package is closed with nylo(or koi if there is no way to fix name), an intricately programmed energy fuelled workout featuring reversed bass swells, jazz tinged rhodes melodies and crunchy distorted drums.

step forward andré abel and joana da conceição, the portuguese duo behind the long-running experimental act tropa macaca who had a brush with the alt-mainstream a few years ago in the shape of the ectoplasma single for daniel lopatin’s software label. seemingly absent since their 2013 lp, praga de urubu só pega em cavalo magro, abel and da conceição have been coaxed into appearing on the trilogy tapes. given the tone of vida, it should come as no surprise that tropa macaca are also set to perform at the upcoming meakusma festival

fuckthegovernment.ltd, a.k.a. f.t.g (alfredo trastulli) and music box head honcho, marco riff, return to the skylax fold in 2016 with a cache of house nuggets for our listening pleasure. their last venture on skylax saw f.t.g collaborate with a bunch of his friends, resulting in some of the best tracks we’d heard all year, including the unforgettable fuckthegovernment theme. their tracks have been celebrated and hailed by some of the best djs in the game, names such as derrick may, ricardo villalobos, raresh, and dj harvey. the bar set by the first record remains sky high, and somehow, these two manage to raise the bar even higher. it may be the biggest cliche going when talking about an album, but the duo certainly do take us on a journey, through the past and present of house music. it’s a record not too dissimilar in tone to paranoid london’s from a few years back, but f.t.g and marco strip things back even further than those guys did, in our opinion, the sound is more raw with less frills, and no track names to predispose feelings in the listener either. this eight track project is cohesive and elaborate, with movements through sounds both acid and jazzy, minimal and maximal. it explores sounds that came to prominence in famous house locales such as detroit and chicago over in the u.s., but the underground european influence is definitely present, from paris to berlin, and of course f.t.g and marco’s home of italy. with this album, these guys add to the underground sound that has cultivated in the city of perugia for years now, a place that has seen the likes of simoncino and nicholas hone their craft.don’t miss out on a piece of skylax history

mount liberation unlimited is formed of sunbeams, sockerbitar, and swedes ! chance members of a stockholm-based band during their late teens, tom lagerman and niklas janzon found themselves peeling off from the pack to smoke and make techno. dreaming of a global dance music community in which artists are allowed anonymity, the two set out to service this secret society by soundtracking happy-making moments under the mount liberation unlimited guise. mlu s third release, (eerie) for your love, developed organically and inversely from their live set into the studio. in this procedural fluidity, hypnotic live takes animate as tenacious tone, melody, and groove. mlu s method relies upon thee jam, the feeling shared in the moment, and then revisiting that friendzied magic. this dedication to spontaneity is tempered by a naive faith in one another, an unspoken jibber jabber that melds two minds together in childlike harmony.

strength lies in calmness – and vice versa. marcel fengler returns on imf and offers three new inspirited musical pieces that protrude from the club context just as well as cater for your home stereo, picking up on the diverse musical moods defined by his debut album fokus (ostgut ton, 2013) while concentrating on intertwining sound aesthetics. with “kyu” laid out on the a-side, this new 12- starts off with a delicate yet muscular floor-pleaser – its subtle 4/4 rhythm is counteracted by lush claps on 2/4, but the true finesse comes in form of its varying rhythmic details, crisp hi-hats and underlying, subtle melodies, most notably the twirling organ trills, sustained synth pads and alienated shout outs. “shitau” on b1 picks up on these introverted and adoring musical moods with more organic bell percussion and swelling synth layers adding a more cinematic touch to the complex rhythm patterns—then pausing for a short dreamy break, gaining speed again before culminating in a grand finale. “zen” follows up with intimate string arrangements until fengler varies the tone and tempo with tribalist percussion and a lush kick drum. this ep is an ideal companion, whether you re pruning your bonsai or branching out a club set.

following the release of 2015’s animistas album on mindtours, steevio returns with the fourth and final volume in the modular techno series after starting the project in 2012. initially conceived as he moved his studio practice towards a purely outboard, analogue, modular synthesiser set up, the modular techno series has charted the development of steevio’s exploration of this working practice both on record and on stage. the work involved in live appearances across the uk and europe over the past four years have fed into the creative process, with rehearsals for sets often yielding the material that has ended up on vinyl. volume 4 is arguably the darkest instalment in the series to date, dealing in a strict economy of minimalist rhythms and off-key melodic touches while still easily identified as the unmistakable tones and distinctive grooves of steevio. in the grand tradition of techno as visionary music, the dystopian tone that lingers throughout modular techno vol 4 points to a future of uncertainty, but this is far from nihilistic music, always within the darkness remains a glimmer of hope.

jordan peak s rogue society imprint gets straight back into action after taking a year off with a seriously heavyweight package. london producer and dj sam russo known for his outings on respected house and techno labels such as leftroom, vitalik, fear of flying and air london provides us with three stellar tracks that showcase his impeccable production skills. the release also comes backed with high quality remixes from fachwerk head honcho and delsin regular mike dehnert, who takes a tougher approach and turns therapy into a thundering techno tool while chicago born malmö native amir alexander changes the tone of thats what he did on sunday into something much deeper and emotive than sam s original adding variety and depth to another impressive release from the label.

gouru is launching its own label, submersive, with an ep from brendon moeller aka. echologist, including a remix from french duo hbtvsk (voiski & heartbeat).in 2014, to celebrate the 4th birthday of the webzine gouru, brendon moeller and hbtvsk were invited to play at la machine du moulin rouge (paris). following a car accident on his way to the airport of new york, brendon was unable to appear and play. to make up for this unfortunate incident, gouru offered brendon the inauguration of its new label submersive, and invited heartbeat & voiski aka hbtvsk, the duo he was supposed to share the stage with, to remix one track. 2 years later, the first ep of the label gathers all 3 artists who were not able to share the decks on stage, on the same record. as brendon himself says , “all good things take time” and instead of evoking the nostalgy of a party that did not happen, the record opens the doors of the imagination and takes us to a powerful collaboration between 2 artists’ generations, thereby showing us the techno scene at its best.zur opens the ball and sets the tone of the ep, a dub and progressive rise, based on a cyclic structure, punctuated by a random reverb. tension is maintained throughout and finally leaves room to filth, whose rhythm is faster, unrestrained, yet keeps an air of suspense and unpredictability - the perfect soundtrack for an exhausting race. looking for trouble plays on a more hypnotic side. with a dark yet electrifying atmosphere, rhythms are exalted by a strident and piercing melody, evolving alongside uncontrollable sounds, throwing us straight into a cosmic trip. faithful to the spirit of the ep, the filth remix delivered by hbtvsk is a perfect exercise of style. without denaturing the original track, the remix revisits it. its’ heavy, powerful mechanism is, at the same time, accurate and sharpened. certain parts of the original track are easily recognizable, which finally get lost in the subtle gearwheel of an anthem tinted by noise.

after a five year absence the illusive cottam label returns. since the original series paul has travelled the world djing, released on labels such as aus & versatile and started his own imprint ruff draft for his own original productions and tracks from other producers. currently taking a break from djing & concentrating on production it felt like the right time to reactivate the label that started it all with some new under-the-counter specials. first up we have ‘mixing tool’, a heavy beat and percussion setting the dark & foreboding tone, the unease increasing like something is creeping up behind you until the distant war cries reveal themselves - a deep track that is much more than the title suggests. next up, the long awaited vinyl release for the cottam re-wiring of a classic film title track, mixing the best elements of the originals synth score with a club ready beat and acid that adds to the original - this is one of the finest carpenter reworks you ll hear.

sound carrier volume 8it’s back to the cosmos with the latest instalment in chris carrier’s always-on-point series, sound carrier. the label is a home for the prolific paris artist’s techno stylings, and no.8 in the series focuses on a galactical fight theme – taking us from terra firma up into the skies and beyond. the first track, ‘alien blaster pistol’, couldn’t be more self-explanatory. mysterious keys parade over an ominous bassline while the beats keep things moving neatly. gentle chimes and bleeps are added, initiating a dialogue between the various high frequencies located in the top end. next up is ‘mahem (magneto hydrodynamic explosive munition)’, which steps into familiar sound carrier territory, that is… slightly unhinged. rolling along at a steady pace, the tune is rough, yet light with shimmering effects and charming wobbly chunks of bass. on side b chris gets gnarly on us with ‘earth invasion’. it’s the beginning of the end, so of course the music has to match that frightening prospect. gruff beats and stomping bass collide with cymbals, crunchy snares and mutant acid licks to create a beast. finally, ‘haumea brigade’ takes us into the twilight zone again, whirring fx float above hard-hitting beats and a mean b-line. eerie pads help to maintain a chilling tone throughout. deadly, the soundtrack to the end of days here on earth... prepare to evacuate!

answer code request picks up where he left off with his album (code, ostgut ton, 2014) and 12“ (calm down, mdr, 2015): with the neume ep the berghain resident offers three new tracks, meandering between restrained club contexts and brittle break beats, machinery and futurist soulfulness. the eponymous track “neume” starts off on a with shuffling rhythms atop a heavy kick, soon caught up by first surging then predominant drone motifs, flashing bleeps and piercing strobe sounds. “meta” on b1 clocks in instantly without any build-up: its rhythm section sets the tone with broken beats while acr slowly carves out more musical detail and textures: subtle command vocals from the machine room, swelling synth pads and other chilling, athmospheric means are subsequently being added until the track’s break where the emphasis shifts towards the kick, pads and synth melodies until the track’s sustained, smooth outro. “vis” on b2 is the ep’s most protruding track: classic uk garage shuffle rhythms and amen breaks are contrasted by a funky kick and dreamful pads, intertwined with additional sparse percusion, layered with what in the first instance sounds like chirping birds but then like sparking wires. answer code request continues what he does best: combining the warm human touch with chilled alienated aesthetics.

infrastructure regularly works with up-and-coming artists on cover artwork. respected young swiss artist julian charriere provided the iconic greyscale cover for post scriptum s debut lp (inf-020), and london based photographer guy archard s work featured on campbell irvine s reunion of two bodies maxi-ep (inf-018). now the celebrated british fine-artist robert ncnally has been invited to submit original artwork for facticity. selected by jake and dinos chapman to show work at the prestigious flowers gallery in london, and commissioned by damien hurst to provide work for his private collection, robert s incredibly detailed large scale pencil drawings are attracting serious interest in the modern art world. mcnally s cover image was selected from a series of works based on adapted antique post cards. its anti-establishment, censorship-related overtones are clear to see, as is the stark use of contrast - thick layers obscure the fading original, re-appropriating it. setting the tone for this carefully compiled collection of new music, rich in subtexts and sub-genres, a special edition print of the cover artwork will be included in the first 500 copies of facticity.

keeping with the rough release rate of an album every couple of years, prime numbers label boss trus me is back with his fourth full length, planet 4. featuring nine cuts of intergalactic techno and once again marking a considerable sonic evolution for this acclaimed uk artist. never one to do the same trick twice, david james wolstencroft uses his latest album as a vehicle for his own interest in deep space, physics and dark matter. it is those subjects that have occupied his mind in recent years, and those subjects that inform this brilliantly otherworldly album. where previous lps have variously been funk and soul heavy, or openly analogue and physical, this one is a more subtle and supple techno affair that is as cerebral as it is seductive. starting with a monologue that suggests that man has already landed on mars, 1979 is a cut that immediately places you somewhere in orbit. spooky synths and sci-fi sounds are eerie and atmospheric and very much set a perfect tone. from there, there is slow, elastic and unsettling mood music on the unexplained , deep and insular techno on dark flow and trippy dan bell style minimalism on ring round heart . the second half of the lp touches on chunky dub, manic and melodic grooves. this is a coherent statement that holds together conceptually and musically. as well as providing plenty of dynamite for the more discerning dance floor, planet 4 is also a delightfully detailed affair that will work just as well on headphones late at night.

** ltd 2016 repress ** the next release on fofs deeper house offshoot sees the labels roster swell to include two producers who are ascending the ranks, their recent >gruff it< track on the hotter than hot >visionquest< label has turned a heads and they look set to continue their upward trajectory. matthew has also released solo projects on john shepheards >retrofit< label as well as providing the debut release for sammy ds >ultrastretch< label. not only that but matthew is currently in the middle of his summer residency at berlins much revered club der visionaere. >take me away< is a pure slice of chord driven deep house and as such is a slight departure for the duo, the melodies inclining towards more melancholic feelings. remixes come from recent fof favourite scahtrax who strips the track right back, injecting a booming bass heavy kick drum & atmospherics to lend the track a more hypnotic tone. label co-owner blm injects a dubbier feel into his take on the flip. finally, matthew burton goes solo for >tell them phill sent ya< - a loose limbed dancefloor workout reminiscent of perlon in their pomp.

king ghazi is shadi khries and gilbert cohen. recorded in amman / may 2014. all the music presented here is original, and has been recorded in jordan in may 2014. this project was born when i met shadi in paris, at the percussion recording sessions for acid arab. from these sessions came the idea of&#8203,,,,,exploring local music styles on the verge of disappearing, in jordan and elsewhere in the middle east. it was also an opportunity for me to meet exceptional people and wonderful artists. for 15 days, we travelled through jordan, recording local musicians. here we hear osama al khairat aka abu sayah, an exiled syrian musician who plays the yarghoul (two flutes linked together by beeswax. one plays a drone, the other the corresponding range, all while blowing continuously). i want to specially thank shermine sawalha for allowing us to record in the living room of her parents house, as well as for coordinating the whole project. without her energy and patience, this record would not be in your hands today.
