the alias of welsh-born, california-based brian williams, lustmord first emerged as an associate of spk in the early 80s, before embarking on a solo career that has yielded such classics as heresy (1990), the place where the black stars hang (1994) and (with robert rich) stalker (1995). lustmord has also contributed to numerous hollywood films as music and sound designer, and collaborated with the likes of clock dva, chris & cosey, geir jenssen, the melvins, tool, aaron turner, monte cazazza and coils jhon balance. often seen to epitomize dark ambient, it would be more accurate to say that his work simply goes deeper, further, than conventional ambient dares, or is able, to go. half a decade in the making, the word as power is his new studio album and an exploration of ritual music without dogma.

alessio alexsoul pagliaroli returns to whasdat music this time with the distinctive voice of none other than arnold jarvis. this piece simply titled *tonite* has already become a crowd favorite of terry hunters bang party sundays in chicago, received major play from kai alce and norm talley at movement festival in detroit, and is in the rotation of other top djs: louie vega, moodymann, rick wilhite, just to name a few.

lil jabba isnt like the rest of them. while they are busy joining the dots between house and techno or whatever is safe right now, he is throwing paint all over the page. he is not american, but he is affiliated with chicagos teklife crew (dj spinn, dj rashad, etc.) and divides his time between baltimore and brooklyn, exhibiting his visual art, riding around with his bike gang and making some of the most hypnotic juke and footwork you will ever hear. local action have been figuring out a release with him for over a year - eventually an ep wasnt enough, and they persuaded him to make it a full-length album, scales. some of scales has already seen the light of day through youtube or limited cassette releases, some of it is unheard. some tracks sound cleaner than others, that is because they are newer. that is how these things work. what is consistent throughout scales is the quality: across 12 tracks, jabba flips, twists and inverts the footwork template with endless layers of samples, gurgled vocal tags, jazz licks and whatever else he feels like. these arent trax, they are tapestries.

ludovic llorca aka art of tones is a composer who spent his youth in the north of france, learning music-making with computers (commodore 64 and amiga). after releasing a couple of techno/house 12 inches on small labels, he signed an artist contract (using his family name as a moniker) with french label f-communications on 1997, releasing three eps, followed by a lp (newcomer) on 2001. the albums huge success (more than 170.000 copies sold) leads him to stages around the world, touring for more than 3 years with musicians and singers, performing live in famous festivals (montreux, nice, vienne, den haag, les vieilles charrues) and in prestigious venues.

2013 sees the release of norwegian disco viking rune linbaeks latest long player, on his drum island label. its his first album since the 2000 release (sondag) on paper recordings repap offshoot. last years single wonder feat kurt maloo on the label was a day one sell out here at all ears and marked a significant maturing of runes trademark sound. the influence of norway on the worlds forward thinking disco scene & beyond is more than evident, with countrymen like todd terje, prins thomas and hans peter lindstrom all leading the charge for years now. the creative cauldron of the infamous club in a public toilet skansen has much to answer for! krasava is a very much vocal led project, with a cast of featured vocalists which includes norwegian popstar anneli drecker alongside recent collaborator Øyvind blikstad. the album is steeped in norwegian folklore, visually and musically and the gentle lilt of the norse/balearic sound, sits comfortably alongside more cosmic flavours, rock and beautifully crafted pop.

perseus traxx is no stranger to the legion of underground warriors who place quality above quantity, having released on bunker, m/o/s, photic fields, boe recordings, boomchik, chiwax, sequencias, and future flash to name a few, as well as being one half of nite vision with the man behind mantra/myriadd.the muses are the nine goddesses who promote literature, science and the arts, the personifications of inspiration. though only named and assigned characteristics as recently as the roman era, they were revered by the ancient greeks, who documented that them as having been recruited by the egyptian god osiris as he passed through ethiopia prior to embarking on a tour of asia and europe to teach the arts of cultivation to mankind. itís with this in mind that perseus traxx, makes his first release on newcastleís flight recorder label, delivering an ode to four of them directly rather than the forms they have inhabited while they visit him. bubbling and cutting, heavy synths and dusty tones are jammed out live to tape, ranging from the playful to the stark as they characterise the appropriately named tracks. an ordered tangle of wires and patching in a unique set of acid-free sonic experiments, that sometimes feel as cold and edgy, as they do warm and carefree.

this is the second vinyl for the spanish label that is connected to discos paradiso record shop. agony forces (lycaon) express their experience better than ever. they are growing more and more. very high quality of modern techno. one of the two remixes is signed by an artist who doesnt need any introduction: ness. his style is unmistakable. the surprise is the other remix signed by dark vektor, pure electro that we dont hear much of these days.

coyu is back on noir music and this time stronger than ever. he serves up a double a-side with the haunting techno tune salvation and the lfo oldschool inspired future house.we fell in love with both tracks on the spot and are happy to have such a strong release by coyu on noir music. remixes will follow late summer.

nick lapiens debut release as metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. a skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. that initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. this, his second release as metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. the titular track on the a side is a deep, psychedelic groover. melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by lapien with optimum restraint. equally pensive and gorgeous, the flood serves as a machine’s beat-less foil on the reverse. made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of jean michel jarre’s more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. expect to hear more from lapien here at sequencias. he has many more dark corners left unexplored.

more than six years into his career after several eps and a full album, there isn’t much known about ben gibson, and he is clearly keeping it that way with intent. gibson first emerged on jeff mills’ experimental, influential 6277 sublabel but then again vanished into the ether, he only reappeared three years later on perc trax, even more surprisingly with a full-length. since then, he’s gone on to steadily more notice with perc’s imprint, sect records, and most recently m_rec ltd in spite of the continuing lack of information. exposure isn’t the most important thing for us at chronicle though, and after hearing these five tracks, we saw exactly what it is that drew mills to him from the beginning. it is a sound that we find a perfect fit for the techno futurism of our chronicle series, and here we offer a platform for gibsons more sci-fi, ethereal sounding material, exclusively on vinyl for the fifth edition of our sublabel.

877 records join with longtime friends and collaborators to present the well rounded rebel alliance ep. klic and riskotheque lead the way with their track compton, a bass heavy anthem already rocking the clubs and doing damage on radio. stomping 808&#8242,,,,,s, sing along vocals and acid arpeggios join perfectly to form this instant classic. donga & blake more than do justice to the original with the compton give a dam jam remix. a perfect example of their sublimely considered approach, the reworking is an altogether deeper four to the floor roller using only finely selected elements from the original. well rounded in the house! next up is skeleton grin by donga & blake + richta. this original composition features vocals by donga over an intense and metallic techno-esque bass and kick. we are true believers in the power of a b-side and this is no exception.

mushrooms project are the kings of the mid tempo and they do deep, druggy, chunky, sometimes more balearic, sometimes just more freaky music better than anyone else. check! their approach is hallucinating and all encompassing and is made up of the analogue sounds of guitar, bass, synth and percussive layers to create a dirty but unique background. their new undergrass album is a melting pot of all their influences and is a straight up journey through the mesmerizing and unusual minds of the mushrooms. undergrass is released on gatefold double vinyl with a bonus 10 inch featuring remixes of 16823 by brennan green and mudd. brennan takes his mix into the electro boogie sounds of an 80s new york while mudd brings out the guitar, layering up his own production with equally devastating effect.

ms. smooth socal soul meets mr. nocal dirtybird swagger and they have a baby together. that baby is justin jay and at 19 years old he is already making his 3rd appearance on dirtybird. i have a feeling this is justin jays breakout record. the a-side static is at 119 bpm and will sweep you up then rip your pants off. but even when you get hit with the massive bassline, an old school anchor stays intact. waves b-side has a classic deep dirtybird feeling, with tuned 808s and a surprising melodic element showing off the sweeter side of this up and coming young gun. justin jay has more potential than anyone i have heard in a while and if he continues to play like he has been lately, he has a long dj career ahead of him as well.

in january the debut album the damage is done by hot coins, the disco crossbreed project by danny berman (best known for his house productions as red rack em), was released. his personal time machine journey into the sights and sounds of downtown new york sometime around the late seventies/early eighties is much more than a tribute to his heroes of those times. its also a brilliant examination of todays club music.

after sides from matthew burton, seuil and albert schwartz, sammy dees ultrastretch label returns in 2013 with volkan akin. a regular presence at berlin institutions like club der visionäre, akin has been slowly rolling out his brand of prickly, spaced-out club tracks since the end of the last decade, both under his own name and as v for volkan. but if volkan akin has up until now been unfamiliar beyond germany, his ultrastretch debut, voltage, featuring an absolute beast of a ricardo villalobos remix, stands to turn more than a few heads in his direction. densely packed and intricately constructed, voltage is an extended groove you can get lost in. cymbals ring softly amidst whirrs of faintly melodic clicks, scratches and voices. but at the center of akins churning, percussive arrangement lies a warm and weighty kick sure to keep dancers pinned to the floor. like so many great perlon records, voltage can be taken as a deeply considered exercise in sound design or as a deadly club track simultaneously, with akins musical sophistication and knack for an inviting beat working hand-in-hand. the original mix spends over 11 minutes unraveling, but as you fall further into the swirl of akins interlocking rhythms, youre likely to stop counting. a shorter constant voltage mix evokes sunrise, pulling back the originals heft to reveal gorgeous pads and hints of organic rhythm. ricardo villalobos, sammys longtime label mate at perlon and a producer who likely needs no introduction, digs deeper into the thump at the heart of voltage on his acdc remix. focusing on the originals wisps of melody, villalobos turns in a warm, zoned-in remix that feels of a piece with the singular techno trips found on his recent lp dependent and happy
