rumble records present a reissue of serge gainsbourg s du jazz dans le ravin, originally released in 1966. gainsbourg, the original bad boy of french pop, the man who updated the french chanson and made it hip again infusing it with the youth culture of the late 50s and 60s, ruled by jazz, drugs, and free love. very different from his celebrated later works, the music captured on this vinyl edition finds gainsbourg mixing traditional chanson and big-band jazz rather than the avant garde pop that went on to define his career outside of france. this record presents a revealing insight into the early years of this iconic figure.

nigerian disco-boogie lp from 1979

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.

get physical is proud to announce the release of the first ever album from chicago house luminary dj pierre. entitled wild pitch: the story, it collects originals and remixes old and new, and stands as a testament to the unique skill of one of dance musics most important figures. famously, dj pierre as good as invented the squelch of acid house when playing with his roland tr-303 drum machine as part of phuture back in the late eighties. from there he went on to clock up more than 200 credits under aliases like doomsday, prime one, raving lunatics, ac!d face, dj pierres afro acid project and many more. he also became famous for the wild pitch mixes and alias that lend this album its name: they were characterised by long intros, layer upon layer of strings, repetitive vocal samples, and filtered hypnotic sounds on hard beats. working with labels like strictly rhythm, trax, king street, nite grooves, international deejay gigolo and more recently get physical, pierre has contributed hugely to the global evolution of house music for thirty years plus. this is a timely reminder of that and one that is jam packed with essential tunes that, old or new, still sound impossibly fresh. included is a cover version of donna summers classic and pioneering disco cut ‘i feel love. it is a 9 minute masterpiece of loose drums, wild acid lines and synthesised squelches that build and build before the vocal arrives and carries you away to the stars

hugh ‘redman’ james is one of the greatest jamaican music producers of the late 1980s. raised in a musical household in the west kingston slum of hannah town, with his mother a sound system selector, redman gained his initial schooling in the music business from none other than king tubby, the legendary sound system owner and dub mixer that was responsible for voicing and mixing some of the greatest reggae of all time. after being immersed in sound system culture during his youth in the 1960s and 70s, redman began sitting in on sessions at king tubby’s studio, but migrated to hartford, connecticut in 1978 in search of steady employment. returning to jamaica a few years later, he established a popular sound system in kingston and began producing music with king tubby’s assistance in 1985, working with the roots radics during a time of great uncertainty in jamaican music, as the new dancehall style came to prominence, early work featured gregory isaacs, sugar minott and frankie paul, as well as rising stars such as little john and horace martin. then, following the computerisation of dancehall, redman began producing some of the most popular music of the day, crafting durable and complex rhythms with a broad team of players that included steely and clevie, augmented by members of the browne bunch and other players. redman helped establish a number of total unknowns in this era, including carl meeks, dave bailey and wayne palmer, and became a serious contender for king jammy’s crown. but the producer was ultimately frustrated by the dramatic changes to sweep jamaican music in the early 1990s, and subsequently retreated from the music industry redman international dancehall 1985-1989 compiles the best work from his glory days, with half of the twelve vocal tracks coming complete with corresponding dub versions.

one of the funkiest albums ever from gilberto gil – a set that beautifully mixes rootsy elements with tighter funk arrangements – in a style that’s not unlike some of the 70s samba soul experiments from jorge ben! the record borrows heavily from american funk and soul of the time, and takes gil’s tight songwriting and infuses it with an even catchier edge than ever before – really creating a fantastic groove that seems to illuminate gilberto’s lyrics even more than before – with a sense of personality and joy that really comes through, even beyond the barriers of language! the whole thing s wonderful – tight, but never overproduced – and very individual, despite an influence from american soul music. titles include -rafavela-, -aqui e agora-, -ile aye-, -baba alapala-, -era nova-, -samba do aviao-, and -balafon-.

a tripped-out batch of hard jamming tracks from ex-mutante rita lee – recorded with assistance from all the members of the group at the time, but in a mode that’s quite different overall! lee is clearly the star of the show here – singing all lyrics with a much fiercer vocal approach than on her earlier solo album – pushing things hard to keep up with the jamming keyboards of arnaldo baptista and guitar of sergio dias – both of whom are working with the energy that would show up in the mutantes styles in the years after lee departed. one of the most compelling aspects of the record is the structure of the tunes – less conventionally rockish overall than the direction os mutantes were moving towards – and still with that strong dramatic flair that lee always provided when in the group. titles include -vamos tratar da saude-, -amor branco e preto-, -superficie do planeta-, -teimoisia-, -tapupukitipa-, -beija me amor-, and -frique como-.

a legendary album! this previously unreleased album by os mutantes was supposed to be their breakthrough album to an english speaking market – but for years it’s only been talked about in hushed whispers, and has only been heard by a lucky few! the record was recorded in paris in 1970 – and it’s all in english! (not that we’re biased against portuguese, mind you – but since we’re english speakers, it’s kind of a nice thing to have a record that we can understand!) the record features a number of tunes from the mutantes first two albums – redone here with translated lyrics, and in a compressed pop style that’s a bit smoother than the original albums, but still very nice! in fact, the record’s a sophisticated pop statement that would have stood well in the company of many of the best of 1970s rock elite – had the boneheads at philips actually decided to release the record! no use crying over spilled milk, though – because the album’s out now, and it’s filled with loads of nice tracks like -panis et circensis-, -batmacumba-, -tecnicolor-, -el justiciero-, -i’m sorry baby-, -saravah-, and a sublime reading of -baby-, a track that was virtually the manifesto for tropicalia!

a wild solo project from rita lee – done after the breakup of os mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! there’s a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that’s echoed by the band’s space-style costumes and makeup – but there’s also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like gary glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include -tem uma cidade-, -menino bonito-, -mame natureza-, and -eclipse do cometa-.

us producer d’marc cantu needs little introduction in the world of acid house and techno. since the late 2000s he’s been serving us quality musical output on labels like crème organization, m>o>s recordings, nation, altered moods or spectral sound, just to name a few. as well as his solo productions, he’s also one half of 2am/fm unit, alongside tadd mullinix (jtc / dabrye).

pretty great sounds from the legendary antonio carlos jobim – an album cut a bit later than his bossa years, but with a darkly sophisticated sound that’s pretty darn compelling! the album features larger orchestrations by claus ogerman, and in a way, it’s similar to the jobim album on decca from 1973 (aka maita pere) – in that it’s got all the simple elements of jobim’s earlier bossa scoring, flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we’d rank right up there with the modernist work of gil evans or duke ellington. a few cuts have a breezier sparer sound, and you’ll hear english versions of some older bossa tunes. titles include -dreamer-, -canta mais-, -olha maria-, -wave-, -two kites-, -this happy madness-, -song of the sabia-, -estrada do sol-, -voce vai ver-, -off key-, and -triste-.

an incredible album from brazilian rock legend raul seixas – easily one of the most important artists to emerge after the tropicalia generation – and a singer with a sound that’s as striking as his image on the cover! the album’s got an explosive blend of styles – everything from psychedelic samba to country rock to easy rock tunes – all bound together by the strong sense of presence that helped seixas elevate to become one of brazili’s most controversial rock stars of the time, all with the kind of legacy you might expect from the cover image! the sound is great – very different than what american and anglo groups were doing at the time, although with sly nods to their modes from time to time – and titles include the english track -how could i know-, plus -as minas do rei salomao-, -mosca na sopa-, -cachorro-, -al capone-, and the strange electronic -introducao-.

known for housing a famous beastie boys sample, the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy, eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: “rien ne va plus,” from the self-titled 1975 album, had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys’ “car thief.” “rien ne va plus” is a banger, all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album, funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments, like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of “lilliput” or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on “horsing around.” “rien ne va plus” remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could, at least once, put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

ikeaboy is the intermittent project from damian tubbritt, who first debuted the moniker more than ten years ago. it s been a long while since any fresh material from this deep cover curio of oddball techno hit wax, but now wicked bass have done the honourable thing and gathered up this excellent trio of tracks. shape memory plies a funky line in squelchy bass and jangling delay trills, while living in the future opts for a more mysterious, pad soaked trip into spooked out electro. on the b-side dayna sports some forthright drum machine beats and epic sweeps of synths that only serve to confound any expectations you might have about the sound of ikeaboy.

kapote is back with a new ep. the berlin based head of toy tonics, passionate vinyl digger and dj comes back with 3 new tracks. as always the kapotes music is hard to file under one genre. i hate clichees in dance music he says. my dj sets are never committed to just one style and so i want my eps to be more open than most dj records are.

for this spectacular release, we have the pleasure to bring you an amazing four track selection called eden ep by giuseppe cennamo, which also includes a fantastic remix by the romanian artist dubphone. for the a side, we have eden first, a beautiful minimal house blend with a strong hypnotic base that makes the listener float with its soft female vocals and texture pads in the backend. the second track is strong bodies and in it we can fully appreciate a techier approach with a groovy low-end construction, which gets perfectly complemented with several percussive articulations and of course, some delicate synth sounds in the background too. as first track of the b side, we have dubphone s remix of strong bodies that relies on a magnificent low-end with a truly peculiar night club sound that can easily get you into a fantastic trippy vibe alongside the several and complex fx elements that distracts you constantly from the base elements. the second track from this side is visionary, and it presents a more joyful base vibe than the previous tracks with some delicate deep elements that creates a subtle and refined sound that reflects the top-notch quality of the whole release.

an incredible album from lo borges one of the best singer/songwriters on the brazilian scene of the 70s! borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the club da esquina album by milton nascimento and his work as part of miltons corner club really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. yet borges is almost an equally great talent on his own with a soaring, soulful approach that’s every bit as great as the best nascimento material from the period and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! the sound here is completely sublime right from the start music that moves us, even if we can t understand the language of the lyrics like some of the best work by caetano veloso and gilberto gil. there’s maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the milton nascimento work of the period but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include beto guedes, nelson angelo, toninho horta, and tenorio jr. the songwriting is amazing and titles include cancao postal, voce fica melhor assim, nao foi nada, calibre, faca seu jogo, toda essa agua,pensa voce, como o machando, and aos baroes.

new york city based further reductions is the live project from husband and wife shawn (aka vapauteen, 400ppm, let er est) and katie o sullivan (aka rose e kross, ppg). back in 2014 they released their gorgeous debut album on cititrax records. the album was an adventurous trip, where they pushed forward a unique sound. after all those years there will be a follow up to this ep on knekelhuis. expect a fusion of different sounds, grimy and pretty at the same time.
