the transition from hip hop dj to dance music producer is not always an easy one. it is a path littered with countless fitted caps, baggy jeans, and backpacks. yet throne of blood s oneauff has walked this path and emerged unscathed. originally from north carolina, this long time brooklyn resident is no stranger to tob, having released two singles with production partner eamon harkin (mister saturday night/subway series) as well as remixes for populette, corinne (on the prowl), and the neurotic drum band (wurst music co.). though oneauff (known to the government as steve raney) has also been heard a couple solo releases including a digital-only single on buzzard gulch and a remix for cubic zirconia (dont cry recordings), the heavy heady ep is his most fully realized and developed. it s also among the most gorgeous records throne of blood has ever released.

italian producer simone fedi, hailing from tuscany, takes things to a whole new level on this third release on eskimo recordings. >bitter devotion< is a vocal pop gem with a balearic tinge, but its bittersweet vocals and the addictive melody will haunt you. for this tune fedi, a multi-instrumentalist with a knack for pop music and a soft spot for vintage gear, joined forces with a mysterious singer named lola rent, and this turns out to be a winning team.
bitter devotion comes with a rather spectacular remix package, ewan pearson (known from his remix work for goldfrapp, chemical brothers, hot chip, moby, franz ferdinand and depeche mode to name a few) gave it the royal treatment. as an additional treat, welcome stranger aka thomas bullock (rub n tug, laughing light of plenty, map of africa, whatever we want records) has indulged in a psychedelic >bitter devotion< dub, analogue and live... just the way we like it.

cynosure starts off 2011 with a killer collaboration project of label head mike shannon and one of berlins hottest young producers david dewalta. dewalta has been recording for years for the likes of vakant and meander records. no stranger to working with mike having already collaborated on the surrender ep on haunt music. the first effort together proved that the two producers make an excellent combination.

the haunting is a production straight out of the highland beats studio. jan liefhebber goes back to his roots with this old-school techno acid track. the ep starts with three minutes of pure techno accompanied by a haunting undertone. a contagious tb303 bass line kicks in when you least expect it and brings the track to a pounding crescendo inspired by early horror films and the dark rave sounds of the 90s. ritzi lee is no stranger to the art of techno and has remixed the haunting with his favorite tool the tr909 leaving the original acidic skeleton intact. ritzis detroit-influenced techno mix completes the 12inch and makes it an essential piece of red transparent vinyl for all techno freaks. experiments have been carried out on unsuspecting crowds around the globe and the first results are extremely satisfactory. hb041 is supported by miss djax, aaron liberator, bart thissen, nimbuz and buzz goree (mixworks/underground resistance)

john tejada was marooned in los angeles in the summer of 82. a strange place to grow up coming from vienna austria. even stranger considering the lack of techno there in the 90s. in a land of glowsticks and desert parties, tejada stuck to his love and development of his own unique electronic sound. fast forward to 2007 when detroit area native josh humphrey was also marooned in los angeles. it didnt take long for the two to meet and connect the cables on their modulars into a system twice as big. the result is marooned, palettes newest collaboration between john tejada and josh humphrey. the trio of songs reveal three sides to the duos work. the title track, marooned, joins humphreys modular synth work with tejadas beats and soothing pads, the result being a slice of beat-driven melodic techno created in a city where such sounds are rarely heard. melodiac continues from there with a lighter mood, with humphreys modular melodies and tejadas signature stabs and rhythms. rounding out the three is concrete safari, which largely focuses on humphreys modular fm synth work that slowly evolves into a cluster of tribal sounds, modular birds and grainy goodness. humphreys knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. he currently works with la based big city music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers. it is also a place tejada frequents to test most of his gear

the model is no stranger to gigolo, and we (the royal we) are no strangers to the model. as a supporter of gigolo records, you, our fated reader, should be familiar with our protagonist previous gigolo adventure. but in the words of the late george harrison, >all things must pass< and with this in mind we would like to reintroduce...
the model doesnt just have his own sound, he has in fact attempted to engineer his own genre: dark-techno-baroque. the sound has been crafted through a penchant for aristocratic mannerisms and a passion for high fashion and low fetish. it also happens to pretty succinctly sum up part of his unique personality. set against a backdrop of refined charm, there s an underbelly of something dark and brutal, which is possibly the best way to describe the a-side >in the night<. in many ways this could be seen as a return to form for gigolo, immediately poppy but structured as a classic song with haunting vocals underpinned with a driving techno rhythm. to further consolidate the techno aesthetic look no further then >flex on the b-side and you have a pounding track that could have been played by daft punk in 96 and will probably find a home with a diverse selection of djs today.
the >vampire funk ep< is the first release from the models forthcoming album on gigolo. the concept is in the same vain, but delves deeper into the dark-side of the model. exploring his fetish with the night and creatures that occupy its opulent corridors. like classic transylvanian tales the music from this album will present details that set the mood and composition to create tracks with narrative regardless of lyrics or words. the result being music that moves both bodies and minds and stirs the blood. as pretentious as this sounds the author of this mindless scrap of paper has the fortunate privilege of speaking from experience. as the mind that moves the hands that moves the keyboard is the mind that is being moved by the music as i type and you read. so we are already part way there. the rest will unfold in the coming months.
