in what might be something of an unexpected reissue move, early rave belter -sweetness & light- from australian duo itch-e & scratch-e gets a fresh airing for the 21st century no less than 25 years after it first landed in a hailstorm of bright melodic lines and raucous tempo. in its original form -sweetness & light- is everything you could possibly want from an early trance stormer, all plush layers of harmony reaching an emotional crescendo over an irrepressibly bouncy beat. the -for life- remix meanwhile flips the script with a blissed out, chord-heavy version that slows the pace right down, possibly for the original fans of the tune who need things a little slower now.

a1 is a deeply psychotic acid death march into confusion, so minimal and primitive (kick, snare, acidsquelch) it will challenge every beard and armpit and might even hypnotize the dj to the point he cannot mix in the next one. a2 is a straight up commodore 64 sid track with mongoloid data elephants tooting over a wobbly and tarded electroish beat. b1 is a dystopic dreamy rave stomper, starting out kinda datacuddly but gets more and more serious, with choirs of fable mooers taking you into that virtual bad trip you need. b2 continues as expected with more c64 sid madness, so snary i cant even determine if its in 115 or 230bpm.

after his banging ep 1 on aus, tee mangos back for the 5th installment in his tribute project, inspired by the much referenced theo parrish quote: love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or dj. everything else stems from that core, that love. with that love, sampling can become a tribute, an expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. time is now time is now comes off like adamski era seal rerub for the small hours. replete with hypnotic looped piano and drums sounding like they were lifted from vaughan mason s raze house archive. simply sweet sweet electronic music. make it last forever the b side is tee mango on home turf, with a selection of choice samples under his cap (from a record you might recognise), some simple loose sampled drums and a smattering of dub delay. love for this series coming from: axel boman, benji b, artwork, fred p, and a heap of others. these tribute releases sell out pretty quick, my hunch is that these will not hang about.

vocalist and mult- instrumentalist family thebroomfield s might be new to you but deepfunk heads know the deal. the six broomfield siblings (vocalist, diane and her 5 brothers) released some of the best rare groove 12s and 45s in the 1980s (although this 45 was recorded in 1979) as well as recording with betty wright, kc and the sunshine band, timmy thomas, little beaver, julio iglesias, michael sterling and many, many more. championed by keb darge and others on the deepfunk scene in the early 2000s, this record has remained agonisingly elusive, despite being very popular as both sides are brilliant. so, with the help of symphonical records we got in touch with aaron and made this happen, look out for aaron s 45 dropping soon as well.

austin-based musician eliot lipp delivers �skywave�, an album lipp has been working on for the past several months. with influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. in these nine songs lipp feels he �might have everything i want to say in one moment.� recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing skywave and giving himself permission to take some risks as well. with a versatile approach, lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across america and abroad always returning to his hometown in the pacific northwest. collaboration plays a role in all his albums. he�s been a fan of emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his �not quite awake� remix. he asked dmc champ chris karns to scratch on �joyride�. in addition to doing cuts, chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples. �reflection� came from a jam session with gibbz and cherub in their nashville studio. one of lipp�s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from seattle that call themselves fish tank friends. most of them had a hand in the early stages of �spiders�. with monthly trips planned from texas back to washington, he anticipates more evenings surrounded by friends, fans, and new listeners where he brings everyone together through the touch of a button.

ltd new years deal - 50 % deal - in 1999, serotonin records released their final output, which happened to be the very first official release by fischerspooner, before they moved on to great international acclaim. serotonin was their introduction into the dance music world. one might think that the label would have grown only larger and more successful from this particular high point in its history - but life is uncertain and circumstances unforeseeable. label founders john selway and jason szostek became drawn away in different directions and the label ceased. recently however, they began to discuss bringing back the imprint, re-releasing or remixing old material, digging up their own unreleased productions and producing new material bridging the gap between their early styles and what they create individually now. they also began to look around for new artists that complimented the amorphous serotonin sound

with bjoern torske, skateboard, telephones and last not least the sex tags label all hailing from bergen, the city s not been exactly short on world leading �d.i.s.c.o� , but it s geir hermansen aka velferd that recently cought our ear with his keys. in �the city that drowned� it s unlikely only ever so wet, there s bliss, sun, warmth, heat - all painted bright with skyrocketing masterful synths over very neat and dry bass. great! laid back and somehow dreamy the whole thing catches you by the ear and lingers on but then there s so much dedicated kick and an almost extatic groove in each track - irresistable string hooks made in heaven! �never� and �through the valley� add on to where the title song just left and this give the 3 track ep so much perfectly arranged strength� bergen might well have given birth to another disco standard-bearer.

imagine apollo 13 mission commanded by mika vainio and erp and you might get an idea of the intergalactic atmospherics crawling from the new phi chapter. slovenian minimalism afficionado evano returns to phi with an icy pulse that starts the electro romanticism on the first track and soon turns to hypnotic four to the floor pace. atonal minimalism intensifies with the last two tracks but manages to make the vacuum of music space sound incredibly human.

forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, emotional rescue turn their attention towards carl & carol jacobs cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. -yonge street jam band- comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. the playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

klaus returns from a 2 and a half year hiatus from himself with just 11 minutes of music - that s an average of less than a second of music per day, which is frankly ridiculous. you might recognise the a side if you were there when ben ufo opened up for jamie the xx at brixton academy, the only confirmed occasion this tune has been played in public. few are brave enough to do so as it is pretty murky. youve gone full heart of darkness eh (morris da boss kudos) lenna woke up when i played it, she cried but then grinned (manchu)

in 2015, midland watched gerd janson close panorama bar. the way he played that night and the energy he held in the room inspired him to go home and write some music influenced by the experience. the tracks that followed was the first release on regraded. fast forward three releases, in a taxi to an airport gerd mentioned he might have some demos for the label that he had been working on with shan. what followed was a pair of tracks that perfectly encapsulate what the label is about, soundtracking the moments of the night and day when everyone on the dance floor feels like a family.

(get bad). the result? one of the most unlikely and essential party records of 2017. queen and house music: not necessarily the most obvious of bedfellows, but music for freaks has never been a label to take the path most travelled. over the course of their de-cades long journey the label founded by luke solomon and justin harris has released uni-quely idiosyncratic dance music, establishing the label as a go-to imprint for those seeking imaginative, unpredictable records that still undeniably work on the dancefloor. their latest release might well be among the most out-there of them all. originally released back in 1984,two sharp pencils (get bad) is a record by queen drum-mer roger taylor, featuring him on vocals as well as drums, bass & guitar. now brought bang up to date via a fully official and endorsed remix courtesy of anna wall & corbi, this overlooked album track looks set to become one of the summers most essential records. born and bred in the uk, anna wall is a dj, producer and label owner who is a key player in london�s underground house music scene. her label the bricks champions up-and-coming producers, while anna herself has djd all over the world, most recently for mixmag at pacha for their ims launch party. corbi is an ibiza-based dj and producer, a&r for the highly respected fina records and co-founder of melon bomb, a party and dj collective that has in the space of just a couple of years become one of the white isles most talked-about exports. having met while working at house giant defected records some years ago, anna felt that corbi would be the perfect studio accomplice to work on the remix of two sharp pencils.

one of the current techno scene�s �hidden treasures�, bristol based a sagittariun has discretely released a wide breadth of music over the last five years for labels like secretsundaze, hypercolour and his own elastic dreams label. two highly acclaimed albums in �dream ritual� and �elasticity� as well as fifteen eps have appealed to those who like their techno without frontiers, taking in blistering 140bpm techno, breakbeat idm and ambient dub with ease. his second release for hypercolour displays signs of crossover appeal at long last� lead track �vanishing point� has already been receiving early plays from the likes of laurent garnier (dropping it in his recent timewarp germany set), spencer parker and len faki. big pumping beats and spiralling fx fall aside to a lone breakbeat that ushers in one pretty special breakdown section. the childlike keys and fathoms deep synth stabs (straight out of the john carpenter school of fathoms deep synth stabs) have already drawn comparisons to the retro 80s vibes to be heard on the american sci-fi horror series stranger things. it�s a breakdown that takes the listener to an uncharted dimension, bookended by slammin� beats that acts as a perfect mood changer in any set. watch this one soar! �the pathway� keeps things on an all together straighter tip, an incessant tribal loop weaves and filters around a thunderous kick and shuffling hats, ebbing and flowing all the way in what might be a sagittariun�s most club-centric and stripped back production yet. matrixxman (dekmantel/spectral sound) is on hold to deliver a superb remix, pushing the original down a long dark tunnel for a growling and reverberating techno overhaul

lyon-based beatsmith ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. through releases on longtime underground favorite kolour ltd and upstart labels like kyoku, as well as contributions to his own moonrise hill material, the frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. his collaboration with better listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound, maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique. the playin with fire ep is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. the a1 slot sees e joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed folamour, for the superlative why my love. meanwhile, loneliness of the shadow dancer- continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. the b-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and i sold yayo to buy kicks serving as the bob james-esque closer. the package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas. dont be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. and you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.

related artists red axes, lena willikens, khidja, autarkic, boot & tax key selling points il est vilaine arent from brittany, but they sure are tricksters. the francophiles among you might have caught on to the corny pun in their name (beating a certain presidential candidate to the punch all while turning the name of the pastoral ile-et-vilaine region into, literally, hes a nasty woman) but the real takeaway is that these born-and-bred parisians dont take themselves too seriously especially in an era in which there is much too much of that happening.

elizabeth merrick-jefferson is one of those artists who seem low-key. theres not a lot of information about her, if any, except for the existence of the first two records and a lone interview. one released in 2013 and the other in 2014. listening to either record tells you her music might be a lot of things, but low-key isnt one of them. powerful and colourful, direct, and with 313 references embedded in its dna, she pulls it off with style. elizabeths third record is no exception. it has found its home on our mothership label, burek. three happiness is tailor-made for the dance floor. it wont leave anyone with a pulse standing. playful synths, wonderful strings, and infectious groove make it impossible to ignore. knowledge revolution is layered and paced, painting a somewhat different picture. melancholy and a sense of mystery envelop this track, whose leitmotif vocal appears just frequently enough to provide insight into the title. the last track of this ep is fittingly titled noctilucent clouds. its a drumless track with a rhythmic main synth counterpointed by sounds which give off the impression of clouds shining through the darkness of winter nights. another amazing release from burek.

when life gives you lemons, have a lemonade. else the other side might be, your cup of tea. 2 labels, 1 mindset: lemonade and cup of tea are two belgian labels based on an ancient pinky-swear promise between arno lemons and fungku. it finally becomes reality with these 2 other-styled fusion labels working together as brothers! lemonade presents a sampler of studio 58 a project by sue avenue with the crazy funk band big whoop and the latin jazz band compro oro, london wonderboy cody currie and a smooth ending track by the brussels based duo lockwood. cup of tea is a mixtape made by fungku with an infused trip of tracks from a peculiar gang from brussels who live by the rules of ratlife. enjoy the flavour of all artists presented on this combo mini lp straight from the belgian underground! independently, but together.

transit records 005, -without end hours�, comes loaded with phat, but definitely distinct dancefloor bangers that take the title of the ep quite literally. they cover a full night (and day) out in the club, and range from dark, technoish house (�when your groove is mine-), over uplifting re-interpretations of classic house anthems (-without end hours-), and dystopian tech-house (negativ dekadent remix), through to sizzling after hour house (zuckermann remix). ryoma sasaki�s originals show his love for classic electronic music blueprints and how he is able to turn them creatively into something compellingly fresh and contemporary. it feels like listening (and dancing) to something you know, but not from the past, more so from the now. and while they wonderfully work in that now of the night, negativ dekadent turns this familiar feeling into an uneasiness with the future, only to make you forget about it in the abyss of his beats and overwhelming synth patterns just before the morning breaks. finally, zuckermann fully beams you into the slightly distorted new world you might find yourself in anyway at 11 am on a beautiful sunny morning on one of those (berlin) dancefloors.

after one year of high energy industrial and punk-leaning music, kess kill presents something slightly more contemplative: the vinyl debut of the swedish act grand mal x. the solna based duo started in 2010 and was first known from the cassette scene, which was also where we stumbled across their work. drawing from a long and wide palette of influences � from osho dynamic meditation and eu highways, to artists like suicide, coil and rune lindblad � their music breathes an ethereal yet catchy air, a difficult line to tread. the fact that one of the members is active at the legendary experimental ems studios in stockholm might be the reason for the unusual amount of depth and maturity, steering the music sternly away from the plainly accessible. opener �late night call� is a brooding and growling number perfect for setting the mood in any room or occasion needing an infusion of sweaty sexual energy. �speed of light�, the record�s most up-tempo song, leans towards both synth pop and electro-punk. on the flip �the trip� does the exact opposite of the opener, winding things down both emotionally and energy wise, replacing sex appeal with lithium-lined angst, not unlike alan wilder at his deepest. ending the ep is �rabbit�, an unadulterated trip down a similarly named hole for those who feel like falling. summed up it�s the most abstract but surprisingly catchy kess kill release to date, an essential beacon in grasping the label�s concept.

with comparisons being made to psykick warriors of gaia, cyclobe and insanlars kime ne this ones definitely making waves amongst fans of.....well....whatever sort of music this is. komodo kolektif is a loose collective of veteran multi-instrumentalists based not in indonesia as one might expect with such a name, but glasgow, scotland, their name being a reference to the indonesian gamelan instruments featured in their compositions. the instruments used (saron, gender, kempul) belong to local gamelan ensemble gamelan naga mas of which two of the musicians have been full-time members for around a decade while the other members are also loosely affiliated and have appeared as guest musicians on various one-off performances and who are themselves well-known musicians in their own rights.

kalakuta soul records proudly presents the homewreckers new full length album, machinekiss. the ruhr valley-raised trio have been heavily involved in the underground dance music scene for many years and the soulfulness of their output is unquestioned. now machinekiss might come as their masterpiece. recorded over the past three years the album s nine tracks evolved out of a long in-depth investigation of blues and funk recordings from 1910 to 1980. as the sole sonic sources, the musicians - johannes ehmann, gregor pottmeier and krischan wesenberg - use their own music collections, making the work a reflection of their personal and collaborative history and backgrounds.micro particles of guitar chords, organ sounds and drum elements reappear in new contexts and are fused with contemporary synthesizer and bass motifs. the results are deep, rhythmic, complex and eccentric, leading the listener into the melancholic, more obscure sides of urban life.

supérieur goes for round two after its relaunch in autumn last year. some of you might be surprised that we re breaking up with the single release concept of having one original and one remix, but we believe the time has come to do so. supérieur will be more independent in the future, with an own artist roaster and also with a different sound than the one deliver with connaisseur. this release is by the highly respected south german producer and dj hans thalau, partisan of the techno soul approach, which was celebrated for years by russ gabriel and his ferox recordings crew. it comes as no suprise that hans and russ are friends. hans -soul adventure ep- is a timeless affair. three tracks full of emotional deepness and classiness, and probably thal communications mastermind best works so far. we re rather proud to be able to release these tunes, as they do strike our chord exactly.

new years deal - a1 - luc marianni - six synthetic suites (anno stamm remix) berlin producer anstam�s remix of six synthetic suites is quite a trip. the producer has crafted a dubbed-out version, almost sub aquatic in its sound design, structured around a murky but driving techno beat on which he layers marianni�s sounds. exotic instruments, unusual timbres, daring melodies and even slapped bass: the contrast between these sounds and stamm�s grayscale groove is powerful. a2 vril - synthetic suite giegling artist vril uses samples from marianni�s six synthetic suites released in 1986 to produce this lovely slab of dub techno. carefully crafted, this track is all about soft edges, with a kind of blurry and hazy vibe that permeates it. a sense of motion is conveyed by the sparse but efficient rhythmic section, with chords and melodic elements giving the impression of floating. with much more contrast and complexity than it might seem at first listen, this is beyond your usual dub techno cut. b1 luc marianni - six synthetic suites (margaret dygas remix) also based in berlin, margaret dygas� own remix of six synthetic suites is a deconstructed affair, built around a half step groove, ready to be used creatively in dj sets. somewhere between an ambient excursion and a more rhythmic jam, the producer uses a sparse palette of hallucinogenic, dizzying sounds with a dash of eerie darkness that gives this version a melancholic, unsettling nature. words by edouard isar.

paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.

anglo-cherokee-japanese skateboarder turned musician korey dane returns with his second album chamber girls. influenced by the likes of t.s. eliot, tom waits, karen dalton, the beatles and the stones, and more, chamber girls was recorded almost completely live at l.a.�s analog time capsule valentine recording studios, searing instinct and experience direct to tape. dane produced everything himself, too, except for a quick assist from legendary producer tony berg (x, public image ltd.) on one song, and he was inspired by the deceptively simple ethos he�d internalized while making youngblood: pursue greatness. �writing a song that you know someone might skip over later is sacrilege,� he says. instead, he wanted every song on chamber girls to feel not only live but alive, too, with that go-forbroke spirit that animates everything he says, does, or sings: �i�m writing all the time,� he says. �i�ve lived by a line a day sometimes. i try and stop when it�s good. if you try and simplify it down to its bare elements ... it�s truly a redemptive act.�

what does teen spirit smell like, anyway? it might smell something like noise addict. like the real life stars of some sort of choose-your-own-adventure book about pursuing rock stardom, few bands ever led a more charmed existence, springing from the sydney suburb of bondi into seemingly overnight international fame as friends and collaborators of sonic youth, fugazi, and the beastie boys. through a combination of relentless drive, luck, and an admirable lack of self-doubt, noise addict spanned puberty to surpass the haters and join radio birdman and nick cave as a strange but permanent piece of australian punk history.

santiago leyba makes his vinyl debut on the label following the rooms tape released earlier this year. recorded simultaneously, life, money, work shows the new york-based artist by way of albuquerque, new mexico, portraying the different characters one might have in a broken mind. sketching a strong criticism of america by means of disorienting vocals and slow-paced d.i.y. electronics, santiago finds him performing alter-egos of sorts � ranging from forlorn ballad singing, to more guttural and strained barking seeking to describe a conflict in maintaining a unified persona. paid labor, sex, and consumer goods. how america tells you to grow up when there is nothing left but complacency and oppression through economic and social means. it all goes down to the shortcomings of humanity, the tangled webs we weave, the impossibility of justice and fairness, and the pressure those things put upon ourselves.

a quasar is the most luminous object in the known universe. it emits extreme amounts of visible light, but radiates like crazy on all other wavelengths, as well. here you can get as close to a particularly energetic quasar as no man has ever been before - during an adventurous space flight with felix eul and a bunch of other well-travelled sound cosmonauts. this voyage takes you to the final frontiers and beyond where you might even encounter strange aliens like the pianoctopus, known to sneak its tentacles into the ears of unsuspecting astronauts and to tickle their skullcaps from the inside. by the way, during our flight we might experience turbulences which you will experience as sudden, adrenaline-loaded outbursts of euphoria. they are caused by transdimensional discharges along the wings of our spaceship, a phenomenon known as interplay.

nycs finest dj spinna comes through on local talk with an epic release that might surprise those of you expecting a more traditional soulful house workout ! this time spinna went out of his comfort zone with a deep warehouse journey that works equally well in dark european house clubs or at the shelter in nyc. tb or not tb got that perfect blend of space darkness, analogue synths and that old school house thump. initially it s quite raw and simplistic but the true magic of this track begins halfway in (be patient!). if there ever was a journey track, this is the one! but we re not done, on the flip spinna also comes through with a warm and melodic deep house jam destined for those very last small hours. oh btw...that analogue bassline got that extra. thang!

this anthology brings to light the music of robert Æolus myers, featuring recordings from 1982 to 2006 that were previously available only on cassette or cd.
the music within �a retrospective� tells the story of a man whose music elevates its listeners to a place of inspiration and enlightenment. often ethereal, Æolus� music is driven by synthesizers, melodic flutes, sweeping patterns, and subtle rhythms to seed inspiration from deep within the listener.
one might assume that Æolus carved a new path for electronic music in hawaii, but the islands never quite fully embraced the burgeoning new age scene that Æolus found himself a part of during the 1980s and the early 1990s.
few artists in hawaii have produced a body of work, let alone embarked on a musical journey, such as the one that Æolus has created.
