unless you re too young to know or have been living under a rock for the past twenty years, there s little chance that you haven t come across marc romboy s music in one way or another. the systematic recordings boss has had many irons on the fire since establishing his first imprint, the now defunct le petit prince - gathering an untold number of releases on labels as diverse as ovum, innervisions, rebirth or 20:20 vision in his two decades of intense activity. tracing back to 1994, when he used to rummage through the crates of delirium - the primitive incarnation of kompakt (closed and revived under its new name in 1998), the friendship between romboy and the kompakt family has largely withstood the test of time. after losing touch for a few years, romboy and michael mayer would resume contact during a festival in the south of france - a reunion that eventually led to systematic joining kompakt s distribution catalogue a couple months later.

sacred summits returns after a two-year hiatus with an album of interpretations of the music of eric satie by acclaimed composer morgan fisher. active for over 50 years morgans career has moved from 60s number one hit wonders love affair, to 70s rocknroll keyboardist in mott the hoople, before finally on to 80s ambient, improvisation and soundtracks, working with the likes of yoko ono, haroumi hosono and dip in the pool. based in japan since the mid-80s, fishers long-standing admiration for erik satie (1866- 1925) led to these inside satie recordings. satie’s unique work as a precursor to artistic movements such as minimalism, surrealism and repetitive music are acknowledged but for long periods he was not given the accolades his music warranted. a strange, eccentric, surreal man, he was never as acclaimed as the established masters, but influenced not only the likes of debussy but also many of the dada artists. on this album morgan played his music freely after just a brief look at the scores. recorded in just three days, it features piano, melodica, synthesisers, and morgans favoured tape delay system. inside satie is one of the first albums i recorded in japan shortly after moving here in 1985. in three days i improvised on several of my favourite satie themes. mostly i played piano as well as the rich, analog-sounding yamaha gs-1 (precursor of the dx-7), and sometimes used long tape delays to build layers of sound. all the pieces were recorded in single takes no overdubs (no time!).

akokan is a yoruba word used in cuba meaning from the heart, and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album (march 30/daptone records) by orquesta akokan feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. assembled and led by cuban vocalist jose pepito gomez, orquesta akokan is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. it features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at havanas hallowed state-run estudios areito. areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important cuban records have been made. the album was produced by jacob plasse and arranged by mike eckroth. comes in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

an enticing taste of the upcoming debut album ‘eventual reality’ by the james l’estraunge orchestra. brainchild of scottish producer ricky reid, pianist on both 6th borough project albums and one half of the soul renegades alongside craig smith, the james l’estraunge orchestra is “the band that never was”, lovingly pieced together from a series of late-night studio sessions with some incredibly talented jazz and classical players. best described as jazz arranged with dance music sensibilities, the james l’estraunge orchestra sound is warm and organic, atmospheric and at times somewhat bleak, a perfect reflection of the remote log cabin in which it was created. immediately iconic both musically and lyrically, ‘closer’ is a powerful commentary on today’s self-regarding, materialistic world with a strong message of hope for a better tomorrow. combining lush, live instrumentation and climactic, cinematic composition, closer’s emotive, almost springsteen-like vocals are performed by ricky reid himself. ‘groovin’ you’ covers a classic from harvey mason: a bass led, heavyweight instrumental jazz-dance workout featuring some impressive brass and woodwind solos bolstered by spine- tingling string swells and tight, rolling drums.

having established itself with eps from duke slammer and dmx krew, dublin’s modern magic welcomes bari’s armonics for the label’s third release. a trained pianist and resident dj/curator of the we talk event series in his home city, armonics draws influence from electronic music across the past 40 years: chicago & acid house, italo- & electro-disco, new wave, synth-pop and vaporwave.
his italowave style is a fusion of these retro-futuristic and cosmic styles, forged through armonic’s production processes which include cassette recordings, vintage synths & modern korg/roland gear. the look alive ep is the producer’s second release, following a debut on slow motion in late 2016.
accompanying the ep’s three original tracks is an anthemic, piano-led remix of red eye by international feel act black spuma, aka lauer (tuff city kids/arto mwambe) and fabrizio mammarella (telespazio).

sam de la rosa, best known under the alias samuel kklovenhoof of the band led er est and with karen sharkey of the coombe, is back on mannequin records for a stunning 4-tracks electro-wave-experimental release. texas born but strongly connected with the new york cold wave and disco scene from mid 2000, and the wierd records family, sam s music is a clever mix of post punk, electronic hybrids, experimental pop and catchy melodies. additional mix by michael stein from s u r v i v e, already debuting on mannequin records back in 2011, before to get worldwide known for the netflix s stranger things soundtrack.

along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, ‘god made the sea and sun,’ was not promoted properly, though ‘everyday wondering,’ for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

the duo dubdiggerz, hailing from the depths of slovenia, have been stirring up soundsystem culture a fair bit the past few years. even though the two-headed moniker has been taking part in this movement since its inception in 2011, both mark and daniel have already given life to some of the heaviest dubplates. these have been in steady rotation since their very first productions were finished and cut to lacquers. their tailored focus on the meditative properties of basslines, to-the-point percussion and perfectly executed dub effects make every ‘dubdiggerz’ cut a special occasion. without surprise, this has already led to support from some of the most established names in dubstep, including joe nice, distance, v.i.v.e.k, j:kenzo and sleeper. mark and daniel have a promising release schedule in 2017, releasing their first music on vinyl thanks to the trust of america’s dubstep ambassador joe nice and his acclaimed gourmetbeats imprint – something both producers are very grateful for. their involvement in the deepend! movement, ‘a like- minded group of individuals conspiring to advance their soundsystem culture concepts’, will result in their consecutive vinyl release – and more be unveiled later this year. bazzwarz is the producers’ bi-monthly radio shows, which is broadcasted via the dj’s live-streaming community chew.tv. this and their respected deepend! sessions have given them the opportunity to invite international producers to the show and play exclusive material from around the globe, soon streaming their 100th broadcast - with the first broadcast aired in 2011. therefore make sure to keep an eye on dubdiggerz, a promising moniker that has a lot in store for you and the rest of the world.

an obscure tape release discovery by red light radio founder and close friend of the label, orpheu de jong, led to music from memorys latest release. this two track 12inch highlights the work of electronic music pioneer joel graham, a san francisco based artist who self released two cassettes in 1984/85. originally recorded and performed live on pre-midi analogue equipment in 1982 as an outline for a live performance, these visionary tracks provoke much of the same sensibilities found in both contemporary dance music as well as in works of more established vanguard artists of the time. slowly unravelling and deeply hypnotic, joel grahams music seems to manifest a doorway to a profound new world and can be seen as a forerunner of what was to come in electronic music.

roe deers is a lithuanian-based audio-visual project led by liudas and oskaras, two besties, often mistaken for brot-hers. we welcome roe deers to the omnidisc family. with their rush ep. its an impressive debut, built around metallic percussion hits, chugging post-punk attitude, tipsy textures and the sound of broken cuckoo clocks. ‘rush’ is a throbbing dance-floor excursion blessed with an otherworldly atmosphere. it s the musical equivalent of fin-ding a wormhole round the back of a sprawling industrial estate, and then stepping inside to have a look around. easing out the ep’s post-punk and industrial elements whilst adding a heady air of horror-influenced late night mysticism. breathe in the rarefied air, and then run for your life.

alma negra is a swiss collective that consists of four musically driven friends, the figuiera brothers dersu & diego whose roots are established firmly in their cape verdian heritage, dario with his half and half portuguese/italian mix and finally mario with spanish roots. they are all passionate diggers who love playing music from all over the world, something that s evident in their productions as well. encompassing jazz, african and latin sounds to soul, funk, disco, house and even techno. as far as inspiration goes they mention donald byrd, fela kuti and theo parrish. their creative output has led them to release on such fine labels as sofrito, highlife and most recently basic fingers. fans of alma negra includes gilles peterson, ben ufo, axel boman, dam swindle, africaine 808 and tim sweeney. now they are back with digger s workout, a fresh and exciting instalment in the basic fingers catalogue - divided into three seperate 12 s with remixes from esa & santuri, osunlade aka yoruba soul, rainer trueby & corrado bucci present truccy. digger s workouts, part 1 contains three original cuts and one remix from esa & santuri with spectacular basswork worthy of funkadelic. if you re looking for rattling percussions, irresistible basslines, melodic synths and vocal chants that interweave and do a delicious dance with each other - look no further. this first part of the series is a sure-fire way to send anyone into a near shamanic state. .

silas moldenhawer and jonas kenton, both children of the early 80s, grew up alongside each other in the tiny big city of copenhagen. in their teenage years they discovered electronic music and this led them to start spinning records and producing tracks together. years later they met two other talented musicians and formed well-establish danish indie-electro outfit when saints go machine, but still kept on building kenton slash demon as a separate project.

straight out of st petersburg comes a brand new drum & bass label from russia with a lot of love. an offshoot of already established audio plants recordings, burelom (pronounced boorelom) is the russian word describing rugged outdoor terrain, windswept landscapes and fallen trees. this image sets a precedent for the music to follow, expect some of the most breathtaking d&b from deep, dark sonics through to ethereal vocal-led dance floor infusions, starting with release number 1 due january 2014.

the coombes debut ep is an astonishingly graceful and multifaceted creature that effortlessly synthesizes psych rock, minimal folk and electronica.the coombe began as a soundtrack collaboration between karen sharkey and samuel de la rosa (led er est) for some animated short films karen was producing while living in queens, ny. after their move to texas in 2012, further experimenting resulted in longer songs, noise suites, and field recordings that later would represent the essence of this ep. born and in part recorded in the desert, the coombe is comprised of six mesmerizing gems that provide a rarefied glimpse into a touching and liquid soundscape. these are songs for the enamored.

shawn osullivan of up and coming new york new wave bands led er est and further reductions, brings us the latest release on wt. the easiest description would be drop bass network meets berghain dub techno meets the new sound of amsterdam with a little bit of acid and industrial sprinkled in, but you should listen to the clips yourself to decide. shawn takes synths, drummachines, a sequencer and some effects and records one take on a stereo track. this leaves room for wild mistakes, personal moments, and blown out sound. its a classic techno sound that sounds like it should have been done before, but hasnt.

support from andre rozzo, alex jones, so inagawa, jamie jones, matthew styles-harris, laurent garnier, steve lawler, nic fanciulli. luna records is a new uk based label from respected club promoter/ dj/ producer paul bowen, the man behind middlesbroughs infamous >riff raff< events. the label is set to release music from some pretty well established artists with an emphasis on stripped back chunky house music and in that vein the debut single sees the much hailed german producer chris lattner step up get the imprint firing in the right direction. lattner has been djing for the best part of two decades, initially gracing the decks at hannover techno parties before word of his talent spread, seeing him strike out to play across germany. he has hosted a radioshow for australias pulse radio, worked as a booking agent for lessizmore and has had releases on labels such as einmaleins musik and wba. his passion for electronic music has shone through in everything he has done and led him to produce some great records, to which can now be added the luna debut >memory<. this single release kicks off with lattners original of >memory<, a solid tech driven slice of house with heavily effected vocal samples and a simple floor shaking groove. this is understated underground house music at its best, deep chunky and highly effective. first of the two remixes comes from ex-peace division man justin drake, who builds on the vibe of the original, thickening out the drums and layering some heavy filters over the sythn stabs to great effect. a straightforward and highly effective arrangement provides everything that is needed in this excellent reworking. finally we have a remix from bearweasel, who have been providing choice cuts in house music over the last year via labels such as tsuba, supernature, bloop and murmur. for their >lazy dub< they take things back to basics and turn in a slab of deep and dubby house with an emphasis on razor sharp percussion and earth moving bass. this is a superb debut from a label that is sure to become a major fixture in 2010.

strut present the story of one of the most influential and revered labels emerging from new york in the late >70s and 80s<, ze records. after the late 70s punk and new wave explosion in new york, ze became a by-word for the anything-goes culture clashes that typified the big apple during the early 80s. formed by french art student michel esteban and british journalist michael zilkha, ze quickly created its own unique independent universe, signing artists as varied as alan vegas electronic postpunk pioneers suicide, trash disco queen cristina and maverick producer august darnell a.k.a. kid creole. with estebans sharp graphic eye leading the labels visual identity, ze hit the new york zeitgeist head on and became supremely hip û in 1982, the face magazine nominated it ôthe most fashionable label in the world.the labels early success led to a deal with chris blackwells island records, which gave zes releases worldwide exposure and brought worldwide fame to kid creole, was (not was) and more. over thirty years on and ze remains one of the great cult labels of its time. with this new compilation, strut takes a snapshot of the many weird and wonderful fusions that surfaced on its famous nyc cab-influenced yellow and black label. highlights include one of the earliest outings by was (not was), tell me that im dreaming, a disbelieving commentary on reagan-omics, bob blankÆs short-lived disco supergroup aural exciters and a larry levan mix of kid creoles biting parable about corruption in the caribbean, theres something wrong in paradise. other featured artists include ze label regulars cristina, bill laswells material, kookie french experimentalist lizzy mercier descloux, and camp disco-electro icons, les garcons.

having established a cult following on the strength of their previous eps the coyote crew have crafted another blissfully laid back ep of the highest quality. chugging and dreamy in equal measure, these four cuts range from spoken word narrated grooves, to dubbed out acoustic guitar led genius. they have even drafted in the dub disco maestro that is rune lindbaek to supply an extra special remix! coyote back doing what they do best. is it balearic? oh yeah!

off-key limited is a new subsidiary label of off-key industries whose aim is to give exposure to new artists alongside established producers and to bring a wider range of genres with less of a focus on the dancefloor. each release will be strictly limited and will not be repressed. we start by raiding the off-key vaults to unleash a series of releases entitled >the dust off<, featuring material written in the off-key studio over the years by matt o brien and various collaborators and associates. matt kicks off the ep with >a new page turns<, a bangin dubby detroit techhouse cut driven by a low slung rhythm and analog stabs dripping in reverb, overlayed with a melodica riff which calls to mind the smokey refrains of augustus pablo. next up is >untitled< by newcomer mat gates, a beatless slice of electronica whose understated melodies conjure up thoughts of late summer evenings of times gone by. on the flip, o brien and gates combine under the artist name kimble to bring you >epiphany<, led by a shimmering melody underpinned with haunting strings which combine to form an electro track of rare beauty. this diverse ep is completed with mat gates second contribution, >in a hole<, a drum n bass track with a disjointed, skeletal rhythm, sub bass drops and fragile, melancholy melody.

>a 1000 keys< is a fatal hommage to minimalism and a consequent denial of virtuosity and the idea of creative genius. paraphrasing the romantic idea of human perfection, brinkmann found a way to create sonic algorithms of tenderness and brutality, establishing dramatic expressiveness in his constructivist analytics. the result is of radical beauty.
