deep purple’s 19th studio album sees the light of day. it is being released by the german based label earmusic. the band’s last studio effort dates back to 2005’s ‘rapture of the deep’ so this is a long time coming.

the cold busted label unearths more funky nuggets from the fertile russian soil with this brilliant 7“ single from moscow’s anatoly ice. dj, producer, and host of the funk and beyond parties and radio show (running for nearly ten years), anatoly ice has been drawn to the swing of a phat beat for a long while. this single bursts with old school funk and new school attitude, beginning with ”something happened (2me)“. a vintage drum kit and melodic horns are joined by a big hip hop rhythm as the vocals and horn section are expertly cut up and rearranged. the song’s catchy hook – also the title – is left nearly intact and should playfully dance around any b-boy’s head as he does his thing. flip the record for ”light”, which exhibits a strutting breakbeat and some g-funk sauce in its prominent synth line. funky piano, guitar, and bass provide the backdrop, soundtracking a midnight cruise through the bad (as in good) part of town. hold tight … anatoly ice is at the wheel.

loft records returns after a fruitful year to kick-start 2017 with three infectious cuts from rising irish talent hammer. the belfast-born producer is well known for his lauded releases on feel my bicep (in collaboration with the label founders) as well as optimo music but production isn t his only facet. hammer has shared dj booths with the likes of hunee, sasha, midland, craig richards and nd_baumecker, whether at his residency at sub club or at his many gigs throughout europe. with loft recordings reflecting on a prosperous 2016, including a class two track release from isaac tichauer, followed by a chart topping remix package featuring hackman, dorsia, lancelot and bicep, hammer s innovative contribution to the imprint looks to follow suit. soaring pads and intricate drums form the overall aesthetic of canna but as the track progresses serene melodies and subtle snare rolls come together to form a harmonious eruption of synths. manaka then shifts to syncopated percussion and spectral nuances before man ray delivers distorted atmospherics and twisted chord sequences to conclude the package.

our next release is coming from phil evans. phil is also part of the new generation of dj’s and producers that are hailing from the rhein-main area around frankfurt. together with his best mate markus sommer he is running the label pager records. he caught our attention already a while ago and so we were quite happy to receive the tracks for this ep from him. he has a lot of personality in his productions already and his musical range is also quite large going from hip hop to house, but also more stripped down stuff or chicago house references can be found in his music selection and influences. besides that he is a lovely and very sympathetic young man and so it is definitely worth keeping an eye on him, because he is on fire.

swedish producer hans berg returns to pooledmusics techno-focused sister imprint montage with another collection of uniquely esoteric techno. known for previous work on kant and collaborations with johanna knutsson, berg debuted on the label in 2015 with the field ep. his second outing once again provides another showcase for his intriguing rhythmic sensibilities and pleasingly askew take on the classic techno sound palette. the ep is completed by another heads-down burner of a remix from silvershower, aka label boss ian pooley.

freda & jackson’s msh002 is the second offering from sydney’s moonshoe records and their first ep on the label as a duo. in 2016 the two beat-makers burst onto the scene and further-introduced the label with a pair of singles, persius & sumluv to a warm response at home and abroad. msh002, although predominantly house-cuts, sees the pair draw largely on their hip-hop influences with a heavy use of sample chops and and raw percussion. the 5-track maintains an emotional undertone of sadness from front-to-back while each tune holds up as a stand-alone journey.
