phantasm is a new vinyl label and collaboration between amsterdam s sinchi collective and the much-admired night noise outlet, based in geneva. it kicks off with a strong ep from the soviet union aka richard baldwin, including classy remixes from sinchi themselves and in flagranti. baldwin has a signature style that is cinematic and synth heavy and has been formed over the last decade plus. a fine dj, experienced promoter and self-confessed addict of vintage analogue synthesizers and drum machines, richard pulls his influences from early electronica, 80s film-scores, and shades of techno right up to the present day. this track was first written on a cold evening in december 2010 using a roland tr707 and jx8p synth. after collaborating with his songwriting partner the track was given a haunting vocal and released as the disappearance of becky sharp , while the original remained on baldwin s soundcloud and got id requests from all over the world. 7 years later it comes back to life in the form of its original instrumental, with a 2017 rework, plus remixes by sinchi and in flagranti.

swiss artist and veteran producer ripperton contacted the esp institute out of the blue mid-2017 to share a gorgeous mix of self-produced material, a collection of pieces made without any agenda outside of representing the self, not geared toward the dancefloor or a specific environment but simply a bi-product of introspective exploration. we were floored, the mix was on constant repeat in our world for weeks, then was subsequently pulled apart into separate titles to form this beautiful double lp, ripperton’s debut with the label. the title sight seeing speaks of someone stepping outside their current reality to look in the mirror, as if to ground themselves and keep sight of who they are in a world of extreme highs and lows. inspired greatly by expansive landscapes and views from airplane windows (imagine your commute flying over the alps every weekend), ripperton describes this collection as postcards to himself, messages from his subconscious recorded on tape (both conceptually and literally), melancholy soundtracks to the mondays that follow weekend journeys. while musical genres tend to cycle through bandwagon moments, the esp institute strives to operate independently of these, and while sight seeing is undoubtably an ambient album, we’re simply proud to revel in the chance moment where an esteemed artist such as ripperton spreads his wings in a beautifully unexpected mode of expression.

label friend jules heffner is doing his debut on terrace trips. -swamp- kicks off with some jungle sounds and a deep dotted bass line. guy from downstairs (gfd, robsoul) serves a smooth remix with a rolling morphing bass line and some crisp percussion hints. on the b-side -wharf- is with his flurry synths more like a fata morgana tearing you in some wet fantasies. a remix of this one is coming from anatol who just uses some synths from the original and a simple 303 bass line which turns the track in a more minimalistic direction you better use nobite on this one.

mondo groove celebrates italo-disco in fine style delighting us with the most important tunes from the legendary phantom records a ride deep into the world of the label that has not only produced renowned music, but has been acknowledged as a serious influence on modern disco sounds. emerging in the late 70s to early 80s, italo bridged the gap between disco and house, and was a staple of seminal chicago djs like frankie knuckles (who pioneered many of the drum machines and synths that are still in use today). i-robots, a true connoisseur of the genre, hailing from the piedmont area of italy, curated and carefully selected the tracks on this compilation. this eleven track collection features originals and rarities, officially repressed here for the first time, and 2 tracks re-edited by i-robots. the lp comes with the original phantom records logo on the front, scans of original 7-inch and lps covers, as well as photos of the era on the back.

next up on francis harriss newly-founded record label kingdoms comes something very special from brooklyn-based film composer, songwriter, producer and performer leah lazonick. movimenti della luna doro (movements of the moon of gold translated from italian) is a four-track ep from one of the most exciting musicians and performers around - a beautiful quartet of contemporary classical music with a twist. lazonick is something of a polymath, having composed and conducted orchestral and electronic scores for short films and commercials as well as being a classically-trained pianist. lazonick is also a connoisseur of analog synths and vintage drum machines, and will release a second ep focussing on these passions during the course of 2018. here we are treated to three luscious works for piano and string quartet, written for a one-off performance at studio off interarts, an art gallery in montreal. the piece was performed in a forest-like immersive environment, and was originally called in a forest (a piece in three movements). lazonick performed the piano parts along with a string quartet she had assembled for the performance/recording. lazonick explains: as opposed to most of the other songs/compositions i have written, i have no concrete sentimental story behind writing this piece. the motivation, inspiration and overall idea behind composing it was of a more technical nature, attempting to relay the music in my head at its purest form, without any compromises, by primarily making use of melodic and harmonic dissonances whilst still keeping the content captivating, musical and continuous.

das selbstbetitelte album der avant-pop-musikerin sophia kennedy vom april vergangenen jahres auf dj kozes pampa label begeisterte fans und kritiker gleichermaßen. sophia kennedy gilt völlig zu recht als ausnahmekünstlerin in der zeitgenössischen musik aus deutschland. die symbiotische verbindung setzt sich nun mit der veröffentlichung einer neuen 10inch fort, inklusive zwei unveröffentlichten songs, auf der sich sophia weiterhin der handwerkskunst eines songwritings diesseits des mainstreams widmet. im zentrum von -being special- steht ein trio aus perkussivem piano-riff, streichern und handclaps, dass das herz mit der anmut eines großen cinematografischen gefühls wärmt. in kennedys version von -afraid- - einst von der all-time-underground-legende nico geschrieben - scheint eine spröde do-it-yourself-angelegenheit, doch der song entwickelt sich ausgeklügelt in kleinen schritten: sophias unverwechselbare stimme gewinnt an fülle und wird zeile für zeile dynamischer, wie sie durch wiegenlied-artige strophen schweift. -apple in the basket- schließlich ist das verschrobene schlussbild, verkörperung eines wirbelnden zirkuskarussells, das sich im verzerrenden glas eines spiegelkabinetts reflektiert und wo der ort, der eigentlich für den refrain reserviert war, der sich steigernden wiederkehr nun grotesk verzerrter orgeltöne überlassen wurde.

ant orange’s third 12″, for karaoke kalk forms something resembling a trilogy for the label. “right there” is built on a familiar rhodes-n-bass aesthetic, combining the lo-fi jazz of 2017’s “arkupe” with the soulful vocal motifs of 2015’s “s/t”, while introducing more electronic ingredients and taking an increasingly exploratory approach to rhythm and composition. the opening title track clocks in at over 8 minutes, growing slowly from soft tickled keys to a full-bodied groove circled by airy synths and fragmented rnb vocals. “drunk in the trunk” then shifts down a gear, looping another vocal cut over a lazy, stripped-back wahwah vibe. side a closes with experimental jazz skit “let that sink in”, its jerky tempo and flashes of light reminiscent of a late-night subway ride. the b-side takes a more contemplative tone, with the meditative arpeggios and sparse drums of “comfort zone” leading into the dusky west coast stroll of “muscle beach”, before “rudis goes offline” picks up the tempo for a last shimmering dance. the closing track “a frozen lake” sounds just like it sounds – chilled by name and by nature.

the solar phenomena label welcomes achim maerz for its fifth ep. the hamburg producer is an associate of labels like don’t be afraid, where last year he released his mini-album of rough and ready house tracks that are improvised and innovative. the four cuts he serves up here are just as special and have an ethereal air to them.
in my house opens things up with serene synth work and lush detroit stylings. it’s a deep and widescreen track that encourages you to dream. fresh air is a little more upright, with rattling hits and pixelated, long tailed synths lingering above the rooted drums. as the title suggests, leaving this planet is a cosmic exploration, with ambient keys and meditative atmospheres joined by only the most subtle and suggestive sense of rhythm way down below. last of all is two times, a beautiful deep house track with deft synths drifting, bleeding and wandering off into a starry night sky. all in all, then, these are truly thoughtful house tracks.

after being named the ‘best breakthrough label’ of 2017 by dj mag and following on from the ‘techno disco tools ep’, warehouse music launches into 2018 presenting a three track ep, this time under aitchison’s given name ‘ryan aitchison’. this new project gives the more experimental, darker sounds he is producing an identity.
dn5 is relentlessly percussive and hard-hitting, whilst corruption is laced with a growling funk and auxiliary draws the ep to a close as a dark, electro cut. wm004 is pressed to white vinyl with a bespoke hand-stamp design of the infamous doncaster warehouse.

adesse versions has been dropping some choice originals and edits on a host of renowned and respected labels for the last four years and we’re proud to add him to the esteemed list of artists to release on delusions of grandeur. from early white labels on make love in public spaces and his own adesse versions label through to his recent outings on heist, numbers, razor n tape, let’s play house and local talk, he continuous to impress with his raw, sample-heavy production which brings pure energy to the dance floor. for his pulp fusion ep, adesse presents three diverse and brilliant cuts, all showing off his deft touch in the studio and providing what we feel is his strongest work to date. pulp fusion leads the a side with cutting clavinets doubling up the syncopated bassline, a super-charged romp where disco meets filtered house resulting in a track with widespread appeal despite its raw and underground approach. the a2 entitled fade out drops the bpm’s for a string-drenched, philly soul jam, heavy on percussion but with a gentle lilt and balearic vibe that makes it perfect for the wind down. last but definitely not your average b side filler we have the mighty raw in its live edit incarnation. militantly minimal in sonic palate, this jacked up house track simply rocks the spot thanks to adesses ballsy arrangement,production prowess and nasty bassline, rounding off this ep with a punch
