if chicago and detroit are the cities in which house and techno were born and raised, it was in italy circa 1990 that this delirious party music experienced a piano-driven coming of age. so far, so spangled. but while that may be the official story, there are other italian narratives too. take francois le roy and nanni for instance - two djs and producers from southern italy for whom, in the early nineties, the likes of aphex twin, autechre and air liquide were important, alongside the machine funk of detroit and the immersive soundtracks of the ambient generation. both artists are steeped in underground club music, and their new release on shabby doll records is a fine example of tough, tech-edged house. the *crossing roads* ep features four tracks that showcase their melodic yet relentless groove, they may be based in milan, but on this record, the influence of detroit, chicago and new york runs deep.

sneaky music is the new imprint from andy bird, the man behind the infamous love fever parties, and producer ranacat. to kick off the new label they have chosen silk 86 to roll out the honours with an ep that showcases silk 86s evolution from the well received clear waters debut on manuccis mistress. the pleasure venture represents a compelling package of crisp production meets gritty warmth with a splash of that 80s sleaze. the pleasure venture ep leads with *felicity*, a production oozing with warmth from the offset. hypnotic vocal cuts pepper throbbing pads and bass stabs giving way to a meandering melody that weaves in and out. on the flip, *the exchange* fuses classic percussion of the windy city and a zig-zagging pad sample hinting at low slung 7am sleaze. *nightdrive* is when the freaks come out, as silk 86 hits eerie vocal snips to a twilight swansong that will disorientate and delight.

the house reverends are a trinity of musicians in their own right combining talents through a love of vintage electronics, analogue tape, and downtuned rnb. they glide through londons club scene bringing a blend of fluid funk driven by their robotic drum machine. this ep is a three-stage journey into the hearts and souls of our shadowy heroes. it is a story of love. drivetime the first tune is a slow motion seduction. a musical massage. it is a high-grade slow dance that works from dinner til dawn. girl, i know one for the body poppers. a tense number expressing the addictive pain of lust. vocoder voices straining with desire as the fever grows. curious lady a dream-like climax. gaze across the galaxy in awe and surrender to the state of psychedelic ecstasy this song so easily conjures.

within berlin-based imprint zaijenroots was launched in 2013, with a collaborative ep entitled they are strong from ibadan main man, jerome sydenham, and no mad ronin, who returns to the imprint for a solo endeavor here.

in the 70s radio stations were a powerful force across the whole of the us, and anyone with a transistor radio had access all kinds of music. live music was another matter altogether, and unless you found yourself in a major city your nights out were limited to what the local talent had to offer. this was especially so with soul and funk acts, as mainstream rock and pop was where the money was. so for small time oklahoma soul bands such as husband and wife charles and barbara burtons groups messengers inc - and later burton inc - times were tough. however, like many purveyors of soul, tough times were no match for those with determination, persistence and a story to tell. many artists scraped enough money together to make a 45 or two on their own label, but the burtons took this to another level – they got themselves organised and released their own full length lps.

a special record originated from a special day. mr. gs spree to detroits movement festival ended at the notorious need i say more? matinee. held yearly in the backyard of the reputable veterans club the old miami and helmed by a promoters crew named visionquest it cultivates debauchery and fine music. back home, mr. g produced these two tracks with two djs in mind. unsurprisingly, they stroke the mind of djs. heavy bass, mean percussion, double bass, walkie talkie voices! what do you need more?

a few words by steffen bennemann: when i heard margot for the first time, i instantly fell in love with their synth-driven free- form kraut-techno. strong melodies, insanely well-shaped beats, sometimes driving, sometimes bravely bending the rules. after great releases on james holdens border community, ivan smagghes kill the dj and their own label we were more than happy to welcome them in our holger family. here they can show their more experimental side, far beyond common floor/listening conventions and full of synapse-tickling synth magic. plus a secret pop hit (trentaseitrenta), perfect for closing any exceptional club night.

misty conditions is a project that started off when henry collins and richard wilson met up in henrys studio a couple of years ago and jammed for a few days non-stop, enjoying the process thoroughly. the connection became so good in this period that the duo developed a fluent understanding of how each other worked, ending up as a project made across the internet, while henry was living in france and richard in la. they cross pollinated by developing what each did best, henry making and creating banks of samples and richard creating software and effects to cut up and re-sample, passing the tracks back and forth, essentially until they felt finished.

space ranger are back on lovemonk. after a highly praised debut album, what about the magnetic fields?, the stuttgart gang delivers a new single, push button bang. they have joined forces with la based good night keaton on vocals to deliver a breezy, everlasting-summer anthem. sun-soaked grooves and roads leading to dance parties on the beach flow into the atmosphere when this is playing. aaron shanahan is the man behind good night keaton and he happens to be miami horrors drummer.
two grandiose remixes accompany the original. the legendary jori hulkkonen applies his wisdom to deliver one of his signature, class aa remixes, while up and coming spanish producer kresy, fresh from a wicked release on hivern, delivers a remix that will leave a certain smile on your face for a while. rounding off the single, space ranger step on it and go straight for the dance floor with intenzo, an immense italo-influenced house track.

with release nr. 11, luv shack records are once again eager to exalt the diversity of their releases, while keeping up the quality. luv011 is the split ep of the two up and coming electronic music duos manhooker and space echo. whilst both projects are still relatively new to the scene, they have equally made a stir with their first releases. manhooker consists of the two berliners by choice tomasz guido switala and sebastian mavin magassouba. their first release appeared on ostgut ton s sublabel unterton and their second ep was recently released on german heavy hitters sonar kollektiv - a collab with ex new yorker snax, featuring a remix by justus köhnke.

we booked dj sotofett a few months ago for a versatile party at rex club. he decided to stay in paris a bit more, to work with gilb-r in the versatile studio. and here is the result! they jammed with zombie zombie, recording the infamous bongos of cosmic neman and the modular synths and saxophone of etienne jaumet. then each of them took the parts and did a version on his own. its the beginning of a collaboration, another 12 inch is planned and already recorded... peace

uk house/disco duo casino times are happy to announce the first in a brand new series of hand stamped, limited italo/disco edits curated or produced by the fun loving boys themselves. casino times have been releasing their own brand of catchy, neatly swung, dance floor ready disco and house on labels like wolf music and needwant. it is not often that an artist can be defined by such a distinctive sound whilst still maintaing a varied and extremely open minded approach to music production and djing. no two of their tracks are similar, yet somehow you will be sure you are listening to a casino times song before it reaches the chorus. their productions sit so comfortably on that precarious boundary that so many artists struggle to sit, while they are emotionally charged they are also extremely dance floor friendly and are as fun as they are provoking. the first in the series (casino edits 001) comes courtesy of the london based duo themselves and is testament to what the series intends to achieve… limited hand stamped copies.

we are pleased to welcome back the extremely talented need for mirrors duo back to the dispatch camp. here they strike completely on the money with the hard hitting funk-led *sling blade* and backing up the a side we have a heavy slice of bristol themed flavour for 2013 with *grapefruit*. both tracks present a clear nod to the old school and inspirational late 90s sounds we always loved (but never left!). need for mirrors prove again with this release that they are quite simply on a roll both as individual artists that make up the nfm duo and in their own individual right, definitely ones to watch for the rest of 2013 and beyond.

killekill 014 is being delivered by alex cortex. on the a-side hyperfocus combines a heavily distorted kickdrum with uplifting trance chords and a breakbeat feeling as if this was the most normal thing in the world. the result is an outstanding anthem that can be used on all floors, whether they are techno, house or breakbeat.by force of attrition is a typical alex cortex-track, driving and static at the same time, slowly moving, hypnotic and deep. the b-side features a remix of hyperfocus by skudge. the swedish duo recently released an ep of alex cortex on their label skudge presents and in return remix this track here for killekill. they extract the breakbeat sounds of the original and use them for a warm minimalistic house tool driven by a smacky wooden snare.

christoph el truentos debut album, what we used to know, is born of change and confusion, and sounds utterly incredible for it. the deeply talented 24-year-old new zealander started writing back in 2011 at the time his son was born. tired fatherhood, personal upheaval and artistic indecision would actually help show christoph a clear path towards completing the record – a transcendant sweep of synths, samples, organic instrumentation and window ledge field recording that gently reveals new layers of sonic texture and emotion to the listener.

transparent sound formed in bognor regis (west sussex) 1994 and are one of the uks longest running electro acts. transparent sound is a collaboration between orson bramley and martin brown. having grown up on hip hop, electro, 70s electronica & legends visage & cabaret voltaire, they set about creating their own unique electro sound. we proudly present their first release on society 3.0 recordings, which comes with remixes by icr and arquette aka marquez ill.

it is jam citys turn to deliver a batch of sweaty, streamlined dancefloor weapons on the 6th installment of the club constructions series. the minimalism and intensity of jersey club music remains a huge influence on the whole night slugs camp, and while jerseys impact can be felt across the cc series, jam city channels those devastating ghostly kick drums like none other. continuing on from where he left off with club favourites *the courts* the *how we relate to the body*, jam drops 5 lean and intense drum workouts build from scrap metal and primed for warehouse use. they move between thudding midrange persistence and just-sub-and-air minimalism, framed by jammed drum machine rhythms and splashes of re-sampled colour. jam decorates these sturdy and well-deployed undercarriages with silvery detail, percussion fragments, broken talkboxes, whispered vox and simple, beautiful chords.

spanish talented artist eduardo de la calle who release on superwax rec, mentalgroove and name a few... we loved his latest release on cadenza. its hypnotic minimal but quite musical. it reminds me early villalobos. on a side, the ranchors time is timeless hypnotic techno.on b side, both tracks are more berlin house style. they are for the fan of kink or levon vincent stuff. we are very happy with this 12inch, hope you enjoy!

one is formerly the front man of a notorious glaswegian punk band, the other a meticulously precise studio guru with creative flair way beyond the majority. as solo artists they are a formidable force, as a collective they are quite simply one of the most exciting new acts in the uk right now. refusing to rush, they spend countless hours trying ideas, searching for samples, tuning percussion and tweaking sounds. for every mia dora track that sees the light of day, there are 100 that dont. this isnt throwaway club music for the internet generation, it is soulful, thoughtful and emotive music by two producers fuelled by an intrinsic need to give life to the sounds in their heads.

after the last collaboration which saw them go out successfully on desolat, the label loco dice, finally and after so much hard work they have completed their first album on beatwax records and have entitled it a young long trip.

in his debut album *villa / 11 rooms* florentin berger-monit aka toju kae wants to take us on a journey through his world and creates eleven unique, fantastic soundscapes, so intriguing and haunting that they will make you listen to the album again and again. in this concept album toju kae carries us through 11 very detailed and rich, but at the same time never overloaded tracks that perfectly showcase his proficient producer skills and his attention for detail.

in 2011 when mad mats and tooli went to sonar festival in barcelona they met ludovic llorca aka art of tones outside a club. little did they know back then that two years later on they would release a 12 inch together. the same thing ep opens with the title track and kicks pretty damn sweet with its strong vocal, the guitar, bass and rhodes jamming on top of a tight groove, there is also a dub version included on the b-side. last but not least, the great sgatmi is a jazzy and bumpy house take with lots of samples perfectly balanced. all in all, classic art of tones material and the work of a producer firing on all cylinders.

after the recent success of their expansive debut full length on idle hands and while they bask in the glory of their recently well received resident advisor podcast, jacob hodge and matt lambert push on with a new ep on bristols futureboogie. to date outboxx have fomented their own ebullient house style that is imbued with a keen sense of uplifting melody, plenty of analogue dust and some heavyweight bass, largely on bristol based labels, and this new ep sees them continue in that fine form.

exposed within the interior of these tracks are a variety of intrusive and extrusive igneous structures. they include the extensive hydrothermal alteration of rhyolites and gabbros and a central megabreccia created by hydrothermal dissolution and collapse. the siliceous megabreccia is at least 40m thick in its center - to only a few meters thick along its edges. the breccia consists of fragments of white to dark gray cherty material, quartz-rich bass, diagenetic clap nodules, and stromatolitic snares. it is intensively silicified.

gutts are a jaded wrestling double act that were much celebrated in the golden era of uk wrestling in the 1980s. after a slow-decline into inactivity and relative obesity they decided to make a comeback in 2013 as an electronic music band called gutts. both neil landstrumm and alan hostage have recently reached peak-fitness through circuit training and eating salad for dinner, toning up for this new heavy-hitting vinyl release on glasgows horror boogie. both were last seen, exiting landstrumms analogue graveyard shouting *not the ears, not the ears* and *i demand to be treated like a sultan*. no further details were available at this time.

fresh off their recent single on avotre, the california duo of yooj and steve huerta return in fine form, this time with their retrofit debut. the pairs creative partnership began back during their final year of university where they discovered a shared affinity for a sound quite divergent from the preferences of their edm addled peers.

stuck in the 9-5 grind, stifled by the impersonality of constant social media and mobile interaction, contemporary urban life can be suffocating. for a certain breed, release cannot be found in the vast, unpopulated great outdoors. urban animals congregate in heaving warehouses, seeking solace in the liberating beats of the kick drum. they are bound not by association, but through a shared experience of primal relief felt in those shadowy, dance floor corners swelling with the sounds of low end frequencies and brazenly sculpted grooves. this is the urban animals jungle.

sydneys excellent death strobe label return with another surprise! there is just no pinning these boys down as they chalk up another fine addition to an increasingly vivid and varied catalogue.

while this album could have gone down a rather obvious route, with the remixers of the asphodells album *ruled by passion…*, andrew weatherall looked a little closer to home.
mainly revolving around the axis - the group of locally-based producers who can be spotted in and out of weatheralls shoreditch studio bunker - reworkings from the likes of phil kieran, scott fraser, hardway bros, justin robertson and ivan smagghe soon came to light.
this idea lead to a broad range of styles with something for everyone. we have stopped arguing in the office about which is the best track. they all are.

ukrainian duo woo york debut on soma with the first in a two part series entitled ancient light. denis & andrew have been regulars on the underground scene in kiev for many years now and with a live act armed with drum machine, samplers & groove boxes they bring their experience direct to the dance floor. this ep explores the deeper side of hypnotic techno.

an imperious opening gambit from the manchester collectives new label: a multi-pronged, vigorous, top-notch, house-techno showcase. the ep chugs straight off to the dance-floor, courtesy of the juniper duo at its darkest yet (after sides for ominira, underground quality and smallville), with jamming, filtered synths, echoing claps and vocals, and a b-line stealth attack. a regular at meandyou club nights, sul makes his recording debut here with a craftily delinquent and unhinged synth-pop… gone quite wrong. true to form, none other than kassem mosse — who played a night back in 2009 — turns in an instant classic, audacious and grimey, before collective mainstay heron rounds up proceedings with some deep n bleak, spectral techno, bathed in best basic channel traditions.

cult melbourne band primitive calculators cut a single in 1979 before splitting in the true punk fashion. a posthumous eponymous live album was released in 1981 (also reissued this spring on desire) and that was it. those two tracks are as fresh now as they were more than 30 years ago: in a style not dissimilar to the screamers or cabaret voltaire (circa nag nag nag), primitive calculators used raw monophonic synth lines with scratchy guitars and screaming vocals but the songs were standing on their own (as the unplugged version of do that dance that appears on the primitive calculators and friends 1979-82 could testify. the original 7 inch is now incredibly rare and hard to find and this reissue is its exact replica. first pressing limited to 500 copies.
