various creatures of the native flora and fauna are interpreted musically on dominik eulbergs label apus apus. the music pieces are thoughtfully presented with 2 tracks per ep. his first ep features the track bienenfresser (eng. bee-eater) on the a side and blauracke (engl. blue roller) on the flip side. the bee-eater is the most colorful bird of our native lands a quality which is echoed through the piece of the same name. the composition oscillates from one color into another without losing its significant habitus. it is a musical journey through the color scheme of the bee-eater, through which dominik eulberg takes us by way of his iconic style. he succeeds at a striking balancing act between sensitive subtlety and steady pressure, in order to offer us a satisfying share of hedonism. it is a piece of music that provides an intimate listening experience, while simultaneously supplying listeners with a collective, mobilizing anthem. the long introduction of the track emulates the agile flight for prey of the dazzling bird, but then it fervently taps out the stinger of the captured bee, and finally nothing can stand in the way of the massiveness of the celebratory bass drum. intrepid, yet with a high degree of ataraxia, dominik leads us through the skies on an expedition into the colorful land of the bee-eater. the magnificent turquoise blue plumage of the blue roller glimmers green or blue, depending on the quality of light. these colors, translated into worlds of sound, are reflected in this piece of the same name. sparkling melodies intertwine gracefully along musical chains, and create a constant redefinition of the theme. the piece is inviting and catchy in the typical eulbergian manner submerging into the auditory tract and manifesting itself with much elegy in the deepest cortex. the blue roller is a sit-and-wait hunter at first occupied with idleness, until finally capturing its anticipated prey. this imperturbable serenity is felt in this piece of music and illustrates eulberg s many years of knowledge and experience. he steers his audiences through the true essence of music, while always keeping both hands firmly on the wheel.

ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s second ep on his label apus apus features the track “roter gitterling“ (eng. basket stinkhorn / red cage) on the a side and „tintenfischpilz“ (engl. octopus stinkhorn / devil s fingers) on the flip side. a. roter gitterling the fleshy red cage of this kind of mushroom reminds of a merging of an upside down shopping string bag and an alien. not allowing any objection, the track strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of this strange being. a fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. in a very narrative fashion the track gathers speed and flocks diverse soundscapes and disembogues in a break of harmonical expanse. conciliatory and in a hedonistic way the bass drum eventually stitches together what belongs to each other. b. tintenfischpilz this bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom evokes at first glance the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. as in a science fiction movie four to six tentacles sprout and raise out of a common stinkhorn and later spread into a star shape look. in an unparalleled manner this stunning progression is executed musically by eulberg with a high degree of elaboration. all done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s third ep on his label apus apus features the track -abendpfauenauge- (eng. eyed hawkmoth) on the a side and -oleanderschwärmer- (engl. oleander hawkmoth) on the flip side. -abendpfauenauge- brings together a romantic outlook as well as a rave quality through sequential tight knit melodies which enables the dj to play the tune in the club. -oleanderschwärmer- on the contrary is a dreamy and airy 15 minute epic that is a true fascinating listening experience. a. abendpfauenauge the eyed hawkmoth owes its name to the distinctive eye drawing on its hind wings. the bark-colored forewings provide perfect camouflage when resting on tree trunks during the day. in case of a disturbance, it pulls the forewings up jerkily. the moth now gives off the appearance of a face that suddenly stares at the troublemaker. forward and backward swinging movements of the body intensify this threatening effect. b. oleanderschwärmer with its incredible colors, the oleander hawkmoth is a symbol of tropical beauty. it rarely flies into our fields as a migratory butterfly. with a wingspan of up to 13 centimeters, it is a true -jumbo-. it s flying style is similar to that of hummingbirds. it reaches speeds of up to 50 km/h. it’s proboscis, the tubular mouthpart used for feeding on the nectar of flowers, becomes as long as its body.

2020 repress! after a relatively long break jaffa surfa makes his return with a new release that is a bit more raw thus shifting the sound of tape hiss into the same direction. in comparison with his previous releases on labels like bosconi extra virgin, all inn records and houseworx he is making an effort to explore new territories with ‘psy lance ep’ while staying true to his trademark housey sound. considering all the musical styles that jaffa surfa is taking inspiration from (from the soul/funk/disco trio, through all shades of house music and all the way up to techno) it doesn’t come as a surprise to see him churning out productions in various styles even within one release. the rolling yet deep ‘psy lance’ complements the playful and trippy ‘bazz’ nicely just as the beatless dj-tool ‘preacha bonus’.

this collection of ground-breaking instrumentals captures a moment of musical alchemy. stylistic edges become blurred with by-turns into jazz, gospel, soul, funk and dance. a new genre – gospel jazz – was created in their wake.

ltd 2020 repress !! tj hertzs first original release since 2014s critically acclaimed flatland lp comes in the form of objekt #4, a continuation of his club-focused white label series and a tribute to the sadly now defunct basement q, a formative and beloved haunt in berlin’s schöneberg district which quietly but profoundly shaped the musical identities of hertz and several of his contemporaries until its final closure in 2012.
the two tracks on objekt #4 pay tribute to two of the many musical facets of basement q in its later years. a-side “needle and thread” aims to condense several hours of a thursday night in the basement into 9 minutes and 26 seconds, embellishing a hypnotic rolling techno backbone with hyper-detailed atmospherics, enchanting melodies and tight, strident breakbeats. b-side “theme from q” is hertz’s reinterpretation of a basement q anthem, owner and founder dj bogdan’s own “love inna basement (morning dub)”, which never saw an official release despite providing the soundtrack to over 20 years of late morning love-ins in the cellar underneath the sattler & söhne glue factory. together, the two tracks offer an incomplete but nonetheless seductive illustration of one of the most idiosyncratic and overlooked clubs in berlin’s recent history.
