studio one women is the latest in the series of studio one compilations released by soul jazz records. ska, rocksteady, funky reggae, roots, dub mixes, disco mixes, they are all here from the queens of the jamaican music scene. studio one women features a wide mix of classics and obscurities from the finest female voices in reggae. until now most of these tracks have only ever been available as extremely hard to find jamaican 7 inch and 12 inch singles and even if you were lucky enough to find them they d cost you a small fortune! marcia griffiths and rita marley (here with her first group the soulettes) are two of jamaicas most famous female singers hugely popular today. both these artists became internationally famous as the i – threes (along with judy mowatt), bob marleys backing singers alongside the wailers. also featured are hortense ellis, sister of alton who cut many smash hit on the island and jennifer lara, a lady who had a long career with studio one, singing on countless sides until she sadly passed away earlier this year. studio one is the greatest label in the history of reggae and is the foundation of all reggae music. it is where virtually every world renowned jamaican superstar started out, bob marley and the wailers included. under the guidance of the legendary clement >coxsone< dodd the musicians at studio one recorded hundreds of instrumental rhythms which still provide the backbone for many of the records made in jamaica today.

so we went predominanlty stateside for our last outing, and decided to bring things back home this time. hoya003 is a strictly uk affair. opening up on the a-side is one of rudest producers and djs the uk has going for it. this aint a comment on her manners though, they are as impeccable as her production. after ikonika sent us a zip of some hoya potentials, we just knew >fleas< had to be the one featured on this 12 inch. a more sinister, rolling, emotional jam, it still packs as much as punch as ikonikas dj sets. kicking off the b-side is the homie om unit. now, this guy … this guy. are there any superlatives left to desribe his sonic masterpieces that have rocked too many dancefloors and had as many producers scratching their heads and re-assessing their mix-downs? an instant favourite, >fibonnaci 10< was one of the earliest cuts lined up for a release and when you listen you will see why. this guy. seriously. bringing things to a close, we hand over to one of our favourites from the flourishing cardiff scene. why doesnt monky have more music out? is one of those questions that has been asked too many times for our liking. so much so, we may have to take it upon ourselves to change that. but, for now, just enjoy >hipster<. a killer synth-laden nod to early ukg, but looking forward as opposed to sideways. enjoy.

a side >under< from evol intent featuring vocals from singer/song writer jackie b. this dubstep track is dark, sexy, melodic, and poppy, with a bass riff and drums that encourages you to urgently to hit the dance floor, and shake your ass. the vocals are sexy and consistent. she reminds me of esthero in how she can make underground production sound so polished. yet she can take you places emotionally because she makes intelligent choices her vocal tonality. the production is dark, and sounds like a eerie episode of a twin peaks score. you will be hearing lots more music from her really soon. she is also a great producer as well. it seems like hawkinson has drawn his inspiration from the lush crackling whispering of the woods. akiko seems to see it the same way and with her remix makes a compelling overall package of the second 12 inch by phunkit. >unterholz< is a crisp driving, deep techno roller with playful percussion elements, subtle functionally-held choral dubs and a bass line drily humming to itself. >stillleben< crackles bone-dry and elegantly at the same time, the light melodic phrases form a great contrast to the massive wall of bass. akiko is tinkering a little organic dust monster out of >stillleben<. definitely superb how she is breathing her principle of life into the whole theme, so that you almost wish the track would never end.

red007 sees pushing red taking a slightly different turn with more of a juke style release. (greek - known as dimitri) buckles down with a with what could be called as a fusion of juke, ghetto house & footwork to outstanding results. the sharp 808 kicks and bassline pulsate throughout the tune while a sharp vocal sample cuts through giving the tune that much more punch! flip over for the wonderful ikonika remix. ikonika has really taken this tune and given it her own feel and appeal. turning the stormer into more of a halftime/ house feel, its hard to put to words the outcome. its ferocious & melodic and all wrapped up with that signature ikonika feel! one you just have to hear!
