the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. rummage in some boxes of my favourite record store i found a cover that made me curious. l kubic & tagträumer² - the only thing in this world and on the flipside a remix by alle farben. when placing the needle at the beginning of the vinyl the first sounds were very strange. i thought that must be a record from the 60s lost in the tech-house box but than a straight beat turned everything different. a piano melody slowly sat down firmly in my ear and i was longing to know where the journey takes me. after a while an acidline pushed everything and i was sure at this time this is not a normal 4/4 tech-house record. alle farben remixed the themes very playful and i heard that he gives the elements more pressure for the club. so at the end i bought this one and i cannot imagine taking this unique record ever again out of my record case.

mr raoul k finally got one of his personal ‘heroes to do a remix on one of his tracks. joe claussel takes ‘ayoka (taken from ‘neo-evolution 02?) to a whole new level. he adds a lot of jazz-tingend sounds (especially percussion) and athmosphere but manages to keep the overall african timbre of the original.

elson david is the joint venture of londons duct and owen howells, two of shades of grey recordings co-founders. their first ep, a three-tracker of techy, acid-laced house with tongue-in-cheek nods to uk raving past and present is released on 21st january 2013. the collaboration was born of their shared love of acid house and rave culture, and the desire to do something a bit different to their solo work. both bring considerable talents to bear, ducts classical training and detailed craftsmanship, and owens idiosyncratic grooves and dancefloor focus combine in unexpected ways to produce something that sounds like neither and both.

mgun is the pseudonym of rising detroit star manuel gonzales. since collaborating with kyle hall as nsnt prjct in 2010, gonzales has developed a uniquely lo-fi sound all of his own, a sound first showcased on his debut solo release which appeared in 2012 on the wild oats imprint. his first release for don’t be afraid will hit stores in october 2012 and is bound to spin heads, demonstrating as it does his particular avant garde take on modern techno, not least the game changing ‘gas chamber’ cut which, at 138 bpm, sounds as at home in bow e3 london as it does in his native detroit.
